Falconary in China. Mongolian men sell falcons in Beijing. China, circa 1900. Falconry is a very ancient art. According to one version, it originated in Asia. The homeland of falconry in China is considered to be the district of Akhchi Kezilesu-the Kyrgyz Autonomous Region of Xinjiang. One of the small ethnic groups of China, the Kyrgyz, who own falconry techniques and preserve the traditions of this art form, lives compactly in this area. The earliest image of falconary is a bas–relief discovered on the territory of modern Turkey and dated to the 13th century BC. On it, a young man holds a falcon on one hand, and with the other holds a strap that goes to the bird's feet. In the second century BC, the Chinese emperors used trained falcons to catch pheasants. In the III century AD, falconry penetrated from China to Korea and Japan. Already in the XI century AD, falconry in China and than in whole Asia developed as a form of culture. Genghis Khan (1155-1227) was a specialist, connoi

Generational family of hunters from Hersey says anyone can get into hunting Its not often that you see generations of hunting being passed down. But for the Livermore family, hunting isn’t just for the sport, its for the stories and experiences. “Just put down the cell phones and get out in the woods,” said father of the family, Trent Livermore. Wednesday is opening day for rifle season and the Livermore family took to the great outdoors. “You just got to get it. Get after it. You get you gotta, you can’t be afraid,” said Trent. Hunting was once predominantly done by adults and men, but recently more women and children have gotten into the sport. “I think a lot more women are getting into it, which is great to see. I think a lot more children are getting into it as well,” said mother of the family, Tammy Livermore. Tammy is one of those women, she has been hunting for 27 years and is well known in the community. “I hunt turkey, deer. I’ve shot a bobcat. Pretty much anything. Yo

WISCONSIN BOWHUNTER ATTACKED BY BLACK BEAR When you’re hunting from a treestand, the last thing you expect is for a bear to climb up to attack you. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to Wisconsin bowhunter Dalton Roach. The 300-lb black bear, curious as to what Roach was doing up in the tree, climbed up and bit him in the back, KARE reports. “It’s definitely not totally uncommon for a bear to go into a tree with a hunter,” said Roach. “But the fact that he actually started gnawing on me and stuff, like that was a little abnormal.” He initially spotted the bear from his treestand and started recording it; however, “[b]y the time he was under my tree and then up behind me, [it] was 15 total seconds,” said Roach. Fortunately, he realized the situation he was in and didn’t panic despite the fresh puncture wounds and proximity to the bear. “I kind of pulled myself out and then stood around, and turned kinda in one motion to then face the bear and then just started yelling and holle

Wines to Pair with Fowl Turkey, goose, pheasant? A free-range chicken, or even a capon? The time of the season seems to indicate fowl. We kind of like the idea, since it is out of the ordinary to roast a big bird for a festive feast, the kind of bird that can feed a dozen. With that comes wine challenges, though to say “challenge” is stretching the truth. That truth is almost any wine can match nicely with a big bird roast, plenty of vegetables, maybe a grilled romaine salad with parmesan and homemade croutons. Some choices: Evolve Cellars pinot blanc ($15), almost Alsatian in style with its crispness, but it is distinctively Okanagan as well, with its viscosity and herbal notes, surrounded by delightful stone fruit elements. A sensationally good sparkling wine, the Cipes Blanc de Franc ($45) from Summerhill Pyramid Winery, is a sparkling cabernet franc, which will turn heads, and have people coming back for more, so you may need to have two bottles. It is a delightful, fruit-driven wi

Benelli Shotguns: A Legacy of Innovation for the Modern Hunter For generations, the name Benelli has been synonymous with speed, reliability, and cutting-edge design in the world of shotguns. If you're serious about hunting, you've likely considered or even own a Benelli. But how did this Italian company become a global leader, trusted by hunters in diverse environments? Let's dive into the story. The Birth of a Legend: From Motorcycles to Shotguns The Benelli story begins, surprisingly, not with firearms, but with motorcycles. In 1911, the Benelli brothers – six in total: Giuseppe, Giovanni, Francesco, Filippo, Domenico and Antonio – opened a garage in Pesaro, Italy, repairing and manufacturing motorcycle parts. After World War I, they built their first complete motorcycle in 1921. Benelli motorcycles quickly gained a reputation for performance and innovation, achieving racing success throughout the 1920s and 30s. However, in 1967, the Benelli Group, seeking diversification, turne

How to Hunt Africa on a Budget Chances Are You Can Do It Cheaper Than a Premium Elk Hunt My palms hurt and my knees were bloody from crawling over rocks. My legs ached. My lungs were threatening to quit on me if I had to climb one more mountain chasing a herd that was skittish to the point of paranoia. The guide and I had pursued them up and over so many mountains and glassed them from so many hidden vantage points that I had no idea how much territory we had covered or how we’d ever find our way back to the truck. When the shot opportunity finally came, it was a long one — 320 yards from our spot on a hill to where the bull was feeding on the opposite ridge. “Hold a foot high,” the guide said, and that turned out to be dead accurate. The cows scattered in a panic at the blast, and not long afterward we were standing over a mature bull I had worked harder for than any animal I’ve taken before or since. Sounds like a fairly typical elk hunt, right? Except it wasn’t an elk and I wasn’t
