Wisconsin deer hunt's underwhelming opening weekend blamed on warm weather, lack of snow Over 11,000 fewer deer killed in WI this year compared to 2022 A lack of snow and warm temperatures that suppressed deer movement led to a lackluster opening weekend of Wisconsin's nine-day gun season, with hunters killing thousands fewer deer than last year. The state Department of Natural Resources released preliminary data Tuesday that showed hunters registered 92,050 deer compared with 103,623 deer last year. That's a 16% drop-off from 2022 and 10% fewer deer than the five-year average for opening weekend. Hunters also registered 51,870 bucks, down 13% from 56,638 over opening weekend in 2022. The number of potential hunters didn't vary much from last year, however. The DNR reported that sales of all deer licenses stood at 774,369 as of midnight Sunday, with 421,525 of those licenses exclusively for gun use. Overall, sales of all deer licenses were down 0.61% from the same time last year. W

My beloved pony of 10 years is 25 this year and has been having some physical changes recently: new dx of Cushing's, EMS, IR and laminitis. (We have a specialist vet and farrier on our team.) I have been spending lots of time on the ground with her and going on walks together, and I want to learn something new with her to keep her mind engaged and strengthen our bond. I'm not sure if/when I will be able to ride her again but I want to keep her life enriched as long as she can move around and is not in pain. I'd love some liberty lessons and connections to any resources (clinics, books, online programs, facebook groups, etc) to learn about this type of horsemanship. I am located in Santa Rosa, CA if you know of any trainers in that area. Please message me or comment here incase this post can help any other beginners! Thank you, have a beautiful day 🙂

Wisconsin Known for cheese, farm fields, big hardwood timber, and the Green Bay Packers, the Badger State is also among the states with the most deer, at least according to Kip Adams, a wildlife biologist and chief conservation officer of the National Deer Association. While Wisconsin doesn’t estimate its deer herd numbers, Jeffrey Pritzl, a wildlife biologist with the Wisconsin DNR, provided some insight. “We don’t generate a statewide deer population,” he said, “because it’s a really big number that doesn’t translate well to the individual hunting experience due to widely varied deer densities. However, it’s safe to say that there are well over a million deer, especially pre-deer season. In our online Deer Metrics System, we provide a graph of the statewide post-hunting season population. Some areas may have 10 deer per square mile, and others have more than 100. Our highest densities are in east-central farmlands.” Even though Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, and Kentucky get tons of

Texas The second largest U.S. state, Texas covers an astounding 171,891,725 acres (Source: Beef 2 Live). Often thought of by outsiders as one giant desert, the Lone Star State is actually very eco-diverse. In fact, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recognizes 10 different eco-regions within the state. I recently discussed Texas’s deer herd and hunting opportunities with Alan Cain, White-tailed Deer Program Leader with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Not all states project whitetail-population estimates, but Texas does. “We have an estimated 5.4 million white-tailed deer,” Cain said. “This number is based on regulatory deer surveys that our biologists annually conduct throughout the state. Central Texas has the state’s highest deer densities. This area is known as the Edwards Plateau eco-region, also commonly referred to as the Hill Country. Specifically, Deer Management Unit (DMU) 6 around Llano and Mason Counties has the highest density at an estimated 265 deer per 1,00

The 10 Best States for Snow Goose Hunting Every year, hunters shoot more light geese in these states than anywhere else Even if you didn’t know much about spring snow goose hunting, fields covered with white decoys and parking lots jammed with muddy trailers would reveal hotspots across the country. And for good reason: Depending on the weather and hatch, many areas typically produce year after year. Now and then, however, you hear about a spring destination that surprises you, and some might wonder where hunters actually kill the most light geese. A quick review of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service harvest statistics provides some insight — and a few surprises. Disclaimer: These surveys are estimates and do not differentiate between spring, fall, and winter harvests, and they don’t take into account weather conditions or other factors that might influence success. We’ve compiled a four-season average — 2017-18 through 2020-21 — to get a general trend of recent hunter success. These numbe

10 Classic Hunting Rifles Every Hunter Should Own (Part 1) These classic hunting rifles bring a good dose of nostalgia, and plenty of real-world performance 1. Springfield Armory Model 1903 Sporter Many, if not most, of our modern bolt-action hunting rifles have their roots in military rifles of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After the World Wars, an abundance of surplus rifles was quickly taken advantage of by hunters. The 1903 Springfield was commonly “sporterized” by pulling the action and putting it in a shorter, more-handy “sporter” stock. Of course, they were often re-barreled, re-chambered, and highly-modified for specific hunting purposes—all based around the robust 1903 action. It was common for gunsmiths to “sporterize” surplus rifles for customers, turning them into heirloom hunting rifles. If I was to buy one, I’d take the original .30/06 chambering, although they were often re-barreled in other calibers like .270 Win. The 1903’s action was built for battle, a

Your National Rifle Association (NRA) has joined Safari Club International (SCI) and 22 other conservation organizations, representing millions of sportsmen and women across the country, in a letter to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland. These organizations “respectfully request that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) appeal the February 10, 2022, decision from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California vacating the 2020 rule removing the gray wolf from the Endangered Species Act (ESA) lists of endangered and threatened species.” In early 2020, the Service removed gray wolves in the lower 48 U.S. States from the ESA lists. Of course, anti-hunting groups immediately sued to put wolves back under the ESA. Although these groups acknowledged that some populations of gray wolves have recovered, they sought to force the Service to restore wolves everywhere—from Maine to Washington State. Your NRA, along with SCI, intervened in these suits to defend the Service’s s

Judge Issues Injunction Blocking Wisconsin Fall Wolf Hunt A judge on Friday (10/22/2021) halted Wisconsin's fall wolf season two weeks before hunters were set to take to the woods, siding with wildlife advocacy groups who argued holding the hunt would be unconstitutional. Dane County Circuit Judge Jacob Frost issued a temporary injunction halting the season, which was set to begin November 6. The order comes as part of a lawsuit that a coalition of wildlife advocacy groups filed in August seeking to stop the hunt and invalidate a state law authorizing annual seasons. Among other things, the coalition argued that the season is illegal because the (Wisconsin) Department of Natural Resources hasn't updated its regulations setting season parameters, and has been relying on an emergency rule put in place shortly after then-Gov. Scott Walker signed a law in 2012 authorizing annual seasons and a wolf-management plan that hasn't been updated since 2007. Frost said the law creating the wolf

RINGS REVEAL THE SECRETS OF WOODCOCK Woodcocks have many secrets. They are not gregarious birds, active at night, migratory - not always nearby. Philopatric - that is, they almost always return with an accuracy of 10 meters (!) not only to their birthplace, but also to their wintering place, as the rings and GPS/GSM beacons "say", in 16 countries of the world. And this is without the Far East and Asia! But where do woodcocks fly in the first year of their life, because in one clearing there can be nesting birds that have arrived from different places and countries of wintering... To the country of their father who wintered in Scandinavia or their mother who flew in from wintering in France? How do they decide where to fly? Nobody knows. Woodcocks settle evenly and everywhere where the moist soils are rich in fat earthworms. They don't need competitors, they like to eat themselves! A careful study of the ring return database gave us proof that chicks from one brood fly to different

In the 1970s, it was normal for groups of young Europeans to go across the Sahara in old Land Rovers, on adventures that bordered on the reckless. A group of Spanish filmmakers did almost the same, reflecting one of these adventures while they themselves lived one, they left in 10 vehicles, three of which returned, and for three months they lived in tents and cars while they filmed. The film was somewhat successful, and was even the first Spanish film to be shown in China. But for whatever reason it fell into oblivion, no one digitized it, and like other things it faded into history. But its director recovered 25,000 meters of film, re-edited it and is now promoting it again. We have not seen it yet (we will on December 9), but the quality of the photography seems outstanding to us. The sound of gunshot will have been echoing across the moorlands on the "Glorious Twelfth" – the start of the annual grouse shooting season on August 12 and lasting through to December 10. Managing the "Glorious Twelfth" originated in 1773 when a shooting law was introduced to restrict when one could and could not hunt or even buy game. The biggest growth in grouse hunting came about during WWII and through the 1950s. With food supplies cut off because of attacks on shipping, the UK's food imports dropped from pre-war fifty-five million tons to barely twelve million tons by the end of 1939, barely enough to feed the nation. Even today in the 21st century, shot birds often end up in restaurants, butchers' shelves, and supermarkets. So, what impact and benefits does grouse shooting have on today's economy and where do the royals fit in? For the protection of the land, shooting provides essential income for the Moorlands Association. It is responsible for over 1,500 jobs in the heart

How We Tested the Best Spotting Scopes We invite manufacturers to submit any new spotting scopes introduced from mid-2022 through 2023. Because this particular category of sports optics is expensive to manufacture, and because the market isn’t nearly as dynamic as rifle scopes or binoculars—after all, once you’ve purchased a spotting scope, you’re unlikely to be in the market for another—we test spotters only every two or three years. Low-Light Performance We also measure the low-light performance of each submission by mounting them to tripods and focusing them at 200 yards at a black-and-white resolution target at twilight, all in order to measure the brightness of the glass. The scope that can “see” the longest into the gathering darkness gets top marks. The scope that loses its night-vision earliest gets the lowest score. Scopes in the middle receive scores somewhere between those two poles. How We Score and Grade Optics We break our 10-point scoring into four general categories

Where to find pheasants In the afternoon, divided into pairs, pheasants feed right there near the current location, most often on sunflower and wheat crops. By the evening, about four o'clock, the males begin to call to each other again. When they meet, they fight among themselves. The current of pheasants continues until mid-June. The roosters scream especially hard after the females sit on the eggs. It happens from about the middle of May. The male does not take part in incubation, at this time he shouts intensely and runs around in search of single females. The hen lays from 10 to 15 eggs. She makes a nest somewhere in the reeds or in the thick grass under a thorny bush. After twenty-five days of incubation, in the first half of June, the chicks hatch. They emerge from eggs in thick down and with stumps, that is, contour feathers that begin to develop; they quickly grow flight feathers, and then they can escape from enemies by flying up trees. In the second half of August,

African Wildcat (Africa) Felis silvestris lybica DESCRIPTION (male) Head and body length 21-26 inches (545-665 mm). Tail 11-14 inches (275-360 mm). Weight 9-14 pounds (4-6 kg). (female) Head & body length 18-24 inches (460-620 mm). Tail 10-14 inches (255-355 mm). Weight 5-11 pounds (2.3-5.0 kg). Females have four pairs of teats. The African wildcat is generally recognized as the ancestor of the domestic cat (Felis catus) and often interbreeds with it. The two species are similar in size and appearance and can be difficult to identify in the field; however, there are two features that distinguish purebred wildcats from domestic cats and hybrids. In the wildcat, the backs of the ears are a rich reddish-brown, while domestic cats and hybrids usually have dark gray or black-backed ears, with perhaps a little red. A second feature is the wildcat's long legs. When a wildcat sits upright, its long front legs raise the body almost to the vertical, a position that is nearly impossible for dome

New Jersey to reinstate black bear season New Jersey’s annual black bear hunt is back on. The announcement came yesterday from Governor Phil Murphy, who opposed the hunt, after an increase in bear sightings and bear-human interactions as well as a potential population tipping point of over 4,000 bears within the next two years, according to WPVI ABC News. If approved, the hunt could be held as early as next month from Dec. 5 to 10 with an additional hunt slated for Dec. 14 to 17 if the reduction quota of 20% isn’t met during the first hunt. “While I committed to ending the bear hunt, the data demands that we act now to prevent tragic bear-human interactions,” said Murphy. As GOHUNT previously reported, Murphy canceled the controversial annual bear hunts as part of his campaign promise. As a result, the state canceled the hunt in 2020 and didn’t hold one in 2021. “Bear hunting in New Jersey has been a highly controversial topic for several decades, but only because officials like Mu

How to Hunt Alaska on a Budget Have You Ever Tried This? Alaska hunting is the stuff of dreams, yet many convince themselves it’s beyond their reach. This is easy to understand, as guided Alaska hunts are some of the most expensive around. Single-species hunts for mountain goat, dall sheep and brown bear run anywhere from $9,000 to $14,000. A guided hunt for even “commonplace” barren ground caribou might finance a multi-species hunt in southern Africa. For the average working stiff, a do-it-yourself hunt is the only way to enjoy such an expedition. If daunted by such an adventure, especially its costs, I understand. Yet, after 10 Alaska forays of my own, I’m here to say that with plenty of advanced planning and a meager savings-account grab-stake, an Alaska hunt is well within grasp. While the sexiest Alaskan species require the non-resident to hire an outfitter by law, many don’t. These include barren ground caribou, Alaska-Yukon moose, Sitka blacktail deer and black bear — all anima

First Nations, B.C. government move to ban black bear hunting in an effort to protect rare spirit bears Black bears in Kitasoo/Xai’xais, Gitga’at territories likeliest to carry rare genetic trait, researchers say The B.C. government has banned the hunting of black bears in the territories of the Kitasoo/Xai'xais and Gitga'at First Nations in the Great Bear Rainforest, in response to a joint proposal by the nations to protect one of the rarest bear species on the planet: the spirit bear. "This is the only part of the world where you'll likely find a spirit bear," said Douglas Neasloss, co-ordinator for the Kitasoo/Xai'xais Stewardship Authority (KXSA). "Anytime someone shoots a black bear, it could be carrying that recessive gene so we wanted to see that hunt over." Spirit bears, also known as kermode bears or moksgm'ol in the Tsimshian language, are black bears with a white coat — the result of a recessive gene found in about one in 10 black bears in British Columbia's Central and

Picking Your Puppy: Traits to Look for in Your Next Hunting Dog Are You Looking for a Hunting Dog Puppy? You wouldn’t walk into a sporting goods store and purchase the first shotgun you saw without doing some background research first, so why then would you skip that step when selecting a puppy that you’ll be hunting with for the next 10 to 12 years? Many hunters make that mistake and end up regretting later. In addition to being your most valuable hunting asset, your hunting dog is likely to become your closest companion. Not only will it share some of the best moments of your life with you, it’ll make many of them possible. You’ll spend hours with your dog during training and in the field, so you want to take great care in choosing the puppy that is perfect for you. Tim Nichols of Fall Flight Retrievers says not every puppy has what it takes to become an outstanding hunting dog. So you need to know what qualities and traits to look for, specifically when it comes to health and traina

5 Snow Goose Stops You’ve Never Tried Chasing spring snow geese is one of the fastest growing pursuits in hunting, and with good reason. The most obvious of its attractions are the tens of millions of birds that string out from Texas to the Canadian tundra and from the coast of California to the Eastern Shore. But as the spring migration has ballooned, so has the hunting competition. Meanwhile, it takes plenty of gear and cash to get into the game: e-callers, massive decoy rigs, pallets of ammunition and gasoline for finding fresh birds for the next day’s flight. You might wonder why we go to the trouble. But if you spend one day under twisting white flocks with 10 shotgun shells in an extension magazine before you run it to the plug again and again, you’ll understand. Arkansas, Missouri and South Dakota are the hotbeds for chasing the reverse migration, but a few places are still devoid of big crowds, no matter if you’re a do-it-yourself or pay-to-play hunter. How to Plant a Deer Orchard Should fruit trees be part of your program? Check out these tips for starting new trees Lush fields of clover, alfalfa and brassicas aren’t the only crops that will hold deer on your property. Once established, fruit trees can produce highly attractive forage for 40 years or more. The right trees produce edible fruit throughout the entire hunting season, drawing deer from a distance and holding them on your property. Select the Right Tree Deer will readily consume apples, pears, plums, persimmons, and mulberries. By planting a variety of trees, you can ensure at least one ripe food source throughout the season. Most fruit varieties are available in dwarf, semi-dwarf and standard sizes. Dwarf varieties mature around 8- to 10-feet tall and wide. They’re suitable for small spaces and can stand up to high winds better than larger trees. Their height also makes it easier for deer to reach fruit before it falls to the ground, though the small size of these trees

10 Classic Hunting Rifles Every Hunter Should Own (Part 3) 8. Remington Model 760 Gamemaster The 760 is a box magazine-fed pump-action with similar looks to Remington’s 870 and 1100 shotgun lines. It began production somewhere around 1952, and naturally became a very popular deer woods rifle. Not a style of rifle that’s commonly associated with Alaska or western-style hunting, the Model 760 is a quick-pointing, quick-shooting bush rifle. It’s great for hunting in thick timber where shot distances are limited, but shots might be fleeting. Model 760 Gamemaster in .30/06 would be a great for bear hunting over bait. 9. Browning BAR Designed by Bruce Browning, grandson of John M. Browning, the sporting BAR is a semi-automatic hunting rifle that was introduced in 1968 and first produced in Belgium. It’s box magazine fed and features a hinged trap-door floorplate that’s opened to insert the magazine. The BAR has been highly successful, and different models are still in production today—i

Facts About Badgers Size Badgers can grow up to 20 to 34 inches (51 to 86 centimeters) long from head to tail. The tail adds an additional 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) to its length. Badgers weigh between 9 and 39 pounds (4 to 18 kilograms). Habitat Badgers prefer dry, open grasslands, though they are very adaptable. Some also live in woods, quarries, hedgerows, sea cliffs and moorland. American badgers are typically found in the Great Plains region of North America. They can also be found in the western United States, central western Canadian provinces and in the mountainous areas of Mexico, according to the Animal Diversity Web (ADW) at the University of Michigan. Even kids can brag about owning a Tesla. The electric car maker launched Cyberquad for Kids, a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle inspired by the design of Cybertruck, Tesla's futuristic take on the pickup truck. The $1,900 Cyberquad features a full-steel frame, cushioned seat and an adjustable suspension with rear disk braking and LED light bars, Tesla said on its website. Tesla says the electric ATV is suitable for children ages 8 and up. It can hold a maximum weight of 150 pounds. The Cyberquad's battery has an estimated range of 15 miles, and can recharge in about five hours. It can reach a top speed of 10 mph on one speed setting, and can reverse at a max speed of 5 mph. The company said the Cyberquad will start shipping in two to four weeks. Tesla CEO Elon Musk introduced the Cybertruck in 2019, which drew polarizing reactions for its unusual design. According to the web page for Cybertruck, production on the vehicle is expected to start next year.

How often do hunting accidents happen in France? Two people were injured by stray bullets from hunters last week, as head of hunting federation says ‘zero risk’ hunting is not possible. Since 2000, there have been 3,325 hunting accidents in France, of which 421 were fatal, figures from l'Office français de la biodiversité and la Fédération nationale de la chasse show. This is equivalent to 158 accidents per year, with 20 deaths. Since 2000, the number of accidents has gone down 40% and the number of deaths 70%, figures from L’Office français de la biodiversité show. In nine out of 10 of cases, it is hunters themselves who were the victims of accidents, and in 30% of cases, accidents were self-inflicted. Most accidents occurred during big game hunts, such as for wild boar. These figures do not include incidents that have caused injury or death to domestic animals, or instances where bullets have entered homes or cars. There are currently strict rules for hunters, which aim to re

Hour-to-Hour Elk Hunting Tactics. Elk hunting differs from a traditional whitetail hunt in many ways. Elevation, rugged terrain and extraction adversities separate the two, just to name a handful of complicating distinctions. Another difference is the fact elk keep a schedule that offers hunting opportunities throughout the day, whereas whitetails may shut down. Focus on meeting locations that vary by the hour to engage your leggy quarry instead of napping under an old pine tree. 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. If I had to rate one period as the Holy Grail, it would be dawn through midmorning. Elk seem to be anxious, agitated and goal-oriented. That equals noise, and noisy elk are easy to track. The "anxious" issue arises from elk being exposed at sunrise to potential hunting pressure. They are anxious to move to private digs most hunters will be pressed to reach. Herd bulls are anxious to keep the harem together while moving through a barrage of tag-along satellite bulls. What is the goal? By midmo

New York Hunter Gets a Second Chance on This 180-Inch Buck “I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back” eremy Williams likes to hunt his family’s 500-acre parcel near the Susquehanna River in south-central New York. He goes down to the river often, and last summer he spotted a giant buck near the bank while catfishing. Williams watched where the deer bedded, and then came back to place trail cams in the area. By October, he’d learned the buck’s habits well enough to make his move. “He was only 20 yards away from me on Oct. 10,” Williams tells Outdoor Life. “But I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back.” Eager to redeem himself this season, Williams kept an eye on his trail cams and he kept getting photos of the buck. A few other hunters in the area had spotted the buck, too. But he wasn’t an easy deer to pattern. “I’d been bowhunting him on [our] family’s land in low, thick areas because I believed th

Best Dog Breeds for Shed Hunters A pro trainer weighs in on the traits you should look for in an antler-finding dog At the beginning of every shed hunting season, I always imagine the treasure trove of deer antlers I will find. Then, reality sets in. I end up with a few good antlers, a bunch of dinks, and some weird stuff. This year, I found a ram’s horn. Last year, it was a toilet seat. At the end of it all, I always think about what a good year it would’ve been if I’d just gotten a dang antler dog. That sparked a conversation with Dog Bone’s Jeremy Moore about the best dog breeds for shed hunters. “I don’t know if there is such a thing,” Moore says. “I think it depends completely on matching you with the right dog. It’s a stylistic and preference thing more than anything.” So, if you were hoping for a definitive list of the top 10 shed hunting breeds, this isn’t it. The good news is, you have a real chance of getting the dog you already have – or the one you want – to start finding a
