Honest Review of the Sabatti Rover 870 in .308 Win with a 560mm Barrel As an avid hunter, I’ve had the opportunity to test the Sabatti Rover 870 in .308 Win with a 560mm barrel, paired with the Pulsar Digisight Ultra N455 LRF scope. Here’s my detailed take on this setup, including its strengths and weaknesses. Pros: Accuracy (Sub-MOA Performance): The Sabatti Rover 870 is a true performer when it comes to accuracy. With the .308 Win caliber and a 560mm barrel, I consistently achieved sub-MOA groups at 100 meters. This level of precision is exceptional for a hunting rifle, especially when paired with quality ammunition. Build Quality: The rifle is solidly built, with a robust action and a well-finished stock. The ergonomics are comfortable, and the weight distribution makes it easy to handle, even during extended hunting sessions. Versatility: The .308 Win caliber is a proven choice for medium to large game, and the Sabatti Rover 870 handles it beautifully. Whether I was h

“Ever since I was a kid, an Alaskan moose hunt has been at the top of my list. And, this season, it was finally here. We were dropped deep into in the Brooks Range and quickly found ourselves chasing rutting bulls through the tundra swamps, tussocks, and ridge lines. After about a week and a handful of incredible encounters, we were hit with a days-long September snow storm. The sudden weather shift also called for a change in our tactics; we began to hunt bull moose more like a Midwest whitetail. Setting up along an obvious trail—that move proved to be the best decision we made on the entire trip. As we waited to fly the meat out, we glassed up a large grizzly—a bonus opportunity after an already successful hunt. We put a plan for a stalk in place and with luck still on our side, it all came together. There are no words to describe a hunt like this other than, once-in-a-lifetime.” - Mathews own’ Jeff Ozanne #MathewsLIFTX #mathews

Top 5 Hunting Towns in America Have You Ever Hunted in These Towns? Man, you hate to rank stuff sometimes. Case in point, college football. What makes one team better than another, anyway — TV time, a difficult schedule, wins and losses? Rankings and choices concerning numero uno lend themselves to loopholes, weak arguments and plenty of opinions. So what exactly qualifies a town as one of the BEST hunting towns in America? To find out, I polled hunters who find themselves in the woods for work and play … biologists, editors and industry folks, and here’s what they said: Every great hunting town needs a variety of game. It has to have cafés, hole-in-the wall restaurants, inexpensive hotels, meat processors, and a game and fish office nearby doesn’t hurt, either. Tons of public hunting land within an hour’s drive. Interesting stuff to see if you tag out early or just get tired of hunting. Albuquerque, New Mexico New Mexico’s scattered peaks are notorious for growing monster bulls. A r

Teen hunter shoots record Virginia bull elk Congratulations to Austin Prieskorn! The 15-year-old hunter is now the proud record holder of the only Boone & Crockett (B&C) bull elk for Virginia with a score of 413-7/8” after his dad, Bo, won a Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) raffle. As GOHUNT previously reported, Virginia announced its first historic elk season last year following a successful reintroduction effort spearheaded by RMEF. Out of the five tags available, four went to Virginia residents lucky to draw and the fifth was raffled off by RMEF. Almost 32,000 applicants vied for their chance at a once-in-a-lifetime tag, generating $513,000 for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources general fund, according to B&C. The RMEF tag raised $93,000 and the monies will be used for elk habitat management. Bo was excited to hear that he won. “I haven’t hunted myself in seven years. Benelli Beccaccia 12 Gauge Shotgun Review I recently had the opportunity to test the Benelli Beccaccia 12 gauge shotgun during a few hunting trips, and I’d like to share my thoughts on this firearm. As a seasoned hunter, I've used a variety of shotguns, and the Beccaccia has some standout features and a few drawbacks. Here’s my detailed review. Pros: Lightweight and Maneuverable: One of the first things I noticed is how lightweight the Beccaccia is. Weighing in at about 6.5 pounds, it is easy to carry around during long hunts. This is especially beneficial during those all-day excursions, where every ounce matters. Exceptional Balance: The shotgun is well-balanced, making it easy to swing on target. This feature significantly increases accuracy, particularly for fast-flying game. I found it particularly effective for hunting in dense brush, where quick shots are necessary. Reliable In Various Conditions: I tested the Beccaccia in both wet and dry conditions, and I was impressed wi

Vesper Optics Fieldmaster 10x50 Vintage Binoculars I've been using the Vesper Optics Fieldmaster 10x50 Vintage binoculars for a few months now, and I’d like to share my experience. Pros: Impressive Optics: The 10x magnification combined with a 50mm objective lens offers a bright and clear image, especially in low-light conditions. Whether I'm birdwatching at dawn or stargazing at night, the optics perform exceptionally well. Vintage Design: The retro aesthetic of these binoculars is a real highlight for me. The classic look and feel make them stand out in a world of modern, bland designs. They remind me of the old-school optics while maintaining functionality. Durability: These binoculars have a robust build that can withstand some rough handling. I've taken them on hikes and camping trips, and they have held up against the elements remarkably well. The rubberized coating provides a great grip and protects against accidental drops. Comfortable Ergonomics: The focus knob is smoo

Honest Review of the Weatherby Vanguard .30-06 I recently had the chance to take the Weatherby Vanguard in .30-06 out for a series of hunting trips, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this powerful American rifle. First and foremost, the build quality of the Vanguard is impressive. Crafted with a sturdy synthetic stock, it feels robust and dependable in hand. The rifle’s design minimizes the overall weight while maintaining durability, making it comfortable to carry on long hunting excursions. Additionally, the rifle features a weather-resistant finish, which is a significant advantage when hunting in the variable conditions often encountered during the seasons. The .30-06 caliber delivers a perfect blend of power and versatility. It’s a well-established choice for big game hunters, capable of taking down anything from deer to elk. I was particularly impressed with the accuracy at various ranges. The rifle performed admirably, consistently producing tight groups, which is essentia

Hunting in Kinshasa: Urban Outskirts, Cultural Hunting Heritage, and Ecological Contrasts The Ecological Mosaic of Kinshasa and Its Surroundings Although Kinshasa is best known as the bustling capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, its periphery is marked by a contrasting landscape of savannah patches, lowland forests, wetlands, and rivers. These transitional zones between dense urbanization and the natural world provide habitat for small game species and support limited traditional hunting. The areas along the Ndjili and Congo Rivers, as well as nearby forest fragments, represent the last vestiges of wild space in this growing metropolis. Demography In Kinshasa itself, hunting is largely absent due to urban sprawl. However, in peri-urban and rural zones on the outskirts—such as Maluku, Kimwenza, and areas toward Kwilu—hunting remains a subsistence activity. It is practiced by small-scale farmers, fishermen, and migrant families who retain ties to traditional village life

House OKs bill meant to help owners keep guns in emergencies COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio House lawmakers have advanced a proposal meant to ensure that gun owners’ lawfully held firearms and ammunition aren’t seized by the government during natural disasters, public health crises or other declared emergencies. The bill that cleared the Republican-led House on Thursday also would deem certain firearms businesses “essential” during those emergencies, temporarily extend concealed carry licenses that would expire during an emergency and keep government entities from stopping lawful hunting or fishing practices during declared emergencies. GOP Sen. Picking the Best Rifle and Caliber for Pig Hunting Do you need a magnum setup or a fast-shooting semi-auto? Probably, your deer rifle will work just fine Pig Reality There’s a reason gun nuts love pig hunting. In southern states like Texas and Florida, hogs aren’t subject to many game laws, which means you can hunt them with about whatever you please. If you have a magnum rifle that never sees the light of day because, after buying it, you realized cracked clavicles are no fun at all, you can use it on pigs. In fact, some of the advice out there suggests that you need a really big gun for hog hunting, because you never know when a true Hogzilla might make an appearance. On the other hand, plenty of would-be hog hunters show up with high-capacity semi-autos and visions of a mag dump against a marauding horde of pork. Those rifles are fun to shoot and plenty accurate enough, but unless you’re shooting from a helicopter, they rarely give you much of an advantage while pig hunting. Tru

Potato Latkes with Alaska Salmon Roe “These little potato cakes called latkes are quick, simple, and versatile. I serve them as a side dish to roasted birds or as a brunch dish topped with eggs and smoked salmon. There are plenty of other uses, but for me the best is the way I had them as a kid. I remember watching my grandmother patiently and lovingly grate potatoes then onions by hand into a bowl. She would crack a few eggs, season with salt and pepper and stir gently so the mixture would just barely assemble. Using a spoon, she would scoop a little batter out and in a well-rehearsed manner, then she would drop them carefully one by one into a hot skillet generously slicked with duck fat. As the cakes sizzled, the intoxicating aromas filled our tiny kitchen. I stood by her side like an untrained puppy panting for his treat. She would give me the very first one, hot, straight out of the pan, unadorned. She would blow on it lovingly so it would not burn my lips and as I took a bite,

Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x50 Riflescope Review I recently had the opportunity to use the Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x50 riflescope, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this impressive piece of optics, which is proudly made in Japan. Build Quality: First and foremost, the build quality of the Monarch is outstanding. The scope feels solid and durable, which gives me confidence in its performance in the field. The matte finish reduces glare, and the overall design is both sleek and functional. The 50mm objective lens provides excellent light transmission, making it suitable for low-light conditions—something I really appreciate during early morning or dusk hunts. Optical Performance Nikon Monarch: The clarity of the optics is exceptional. I found the image to be sharp and crisp across the entire magnification range. The color fidelity and contrast are impressive, allowing me to distinguish between different terrains and targets easily. The adjustable magnification from 2.5 to 10x offers versat

Bergara B-14 When this rifle made a splash in America, gun-counter savants were wont to call it “the rifle the Remington 700 should have been.” Blasphemous though that may be to Remington disciples, the fact is the B-14 is an exceptional rifle and has garnered several national awards. Patterned much like the M700, it has a better extractor and bolt release. Manufactured in Bergara, Spain, the B-14 has quickly garnered a reputation for superb accuracy, thanks to the unrelenting quality of Bergara barrels. This reputation is supported by a sub-MOA accuracy guarantee. Versions range from true mountain rifles to heavy, configurable PRS competition guns. There’s even a B-14 R rimfire PRS-type training rifle. The $865 B-14 Ridge model shown here won the NRA Golden Bullseye Best Rifle award in 2018. It has a threaded muzzle, a composite stock with soft-touch finish, and integral epoxy-pillar bedding. It’s an excellent all-around hunting rifle that won’t let you down..
