New initiative targets Colorado mountain lion hunting What will the future of Colorado mountain lion hunting look like? A new petition filed with the Colorado Supreme Court is asking for a proposed ballot to be blocked that would request voters to approve a “statewide ban on hunting mountain lions, bobcats and Canada lynx.” Opponents say that the measure is “misleading” and multiple mistakes were made by the Colorado Secretary of State’s Title Board prior to getting the measure approved for the November 2024 ballot, according to The Colorado Sun. However, last week, a second initiative, Initiative 101, was filed that requests a limit (not ban) to hunting mountain lions, bobcats and lynx in an effort to curb trophy hunting. If approved, this limit would require “every carcass – excluding usable meat – to be turned over” to prevent “mounting, displaying or preserving wildcats as ‘souvenirs of their hunts.’” Initiative 101 does allow a two-week mountain lion and bobcat season at the en

Hunting in Zimbabwe Set to Beat Levels Before Pandemic Struck The $100 million sector sees sales growing 15% this year Nation offers 500 licenses to tourists to kill elephants Zimbabwe’s hunting industry expects to attract more visitors this year than before the coronavirus pandemic, even as the war in Ukraine and other economic challenges weigh on numbers. The hunting season, currently underway in the southern African nation, is experiencing “exponential growth” from traditional markets including the US, Emmanuel Fundira, president of the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe, said by phone from Harare on Monday. Revenues are forecast to be 15% higher this year than the $100 million earned before the pandemic, Fundira said. The bounce back will help the industry recover from the freezing of global travel in 2020 as governments shut down borders to contain the virus. The lack of revenue made it difficult to sustain wilderness areas, villages and animals. Hunting is expecting to lu

Morocco To Boost Game Hunting Tourism Game hunting in Morocco generates over MAD 1.2 billion per year with 80 000 Moroccans and 3,000 tourists participating in the sport annually.  Rabat - The Moroccan High Commission for Water and Forestry and the Fight Against Desertification plans to promote hunting tourism in Morocco, using it as a tool for rural development. According to Abderrahim Houmy, the Secretary General for the commission, hunting has real social-economic potential Approximately 3000 tourists per year currently come to hunt in Morocco and the commission wants to increase this number to 15,000 by 2024, Houmy stated at the annual Game Fair in Lamotte-Beuvron, France, held between June 14 and 16. For Chafik Jilali, the president of the Moroccan Royal Hunting Federation, Morocco is a prime destination for hunting tourism. “Morocco is very close to Europe. Bear meat vending machine proves popular in north Japan city. SEMBOKU, Akita -- From kimchi to insects, Japan's love affair with vending machines continues, and at a shinkansen station here, one machine is gaining popularity for another unusual offering -- bear meat. The vending machine is installed near the entrance to the Tazawako Ichi local product shop near JR Tazawako Station, where the Akita Shinkansen and other trains stop. The meat of locally captured wild bears is mainly purchased by bullet train passengers, and there have apparently also been inquiries from people in the Kanto region around Tokyo who want to buy it by mail order. The machine displays pictures of lean and fatty meat, with a sign saying, "open 24 hours," "black bear," "bear meat" and "2,200 yen (about $17) for 250 grams." The bears are captured in the mountains of the city by members of a local hunting club and processed at a slaughterhouse. The vending machine was installed in November 2022 by people assoc

Looking back on a fantastic week in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. I treasure every trip I get to make to the GYE. This image was captured February of 2022. After listening to multiple groups of howls, we decided to position ourselves in between them in hopes we could catch a glimpse. After only 5hrs of being in the general area our patients paid off. To my surprise a beautiful young gray wolf appeared on the ridge above. With another pack across the river communicating with her I knew we were in for a treat. She boldly made her way down the ridge and towards us. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. I snapped what would be my favorite wolf shots to date. This experience brings me back year after year. The GYE is truly like no where else on earth! Canon R5 Canon RF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM

Creating a Tribal Restoration Workforce The rain slowly fell on a cool May morning as a small crowd of people gathered in a pullout alongside an old logging road in Ketchikan. The blend of official U.S. Forest Service vehicles and uniforms intermixed with private vehicles and casual clothes gave a clue to the diversity of people in attendance. The crowd was comprised of varied backgrounds and employers. Tribal members, hydrologists, fisheries biologists, chainsaw crews, and various staff were all there for one thing: to teach and learn the skills necessary to restore streams and improve fish habitat in the Tongass National Forest. In the summer of 2021, the Forest Service announced their plan to move away from large scale, old-growth logging in the Tongass and instead invest in restoration, recreation, and forest resilience. This new strategy is welcome news on the Tongass, which is part of the largest intact temperate rainforest on the planet, and the robust tourism economy and subs

Boat Accessories for the Salt Water Boat-show season was a huge success this year for both the boating industry and its consumers looking for some new boat accessories, like me. It goes without saying that the prior-year pandemic regulations created hardship for places of gathering, whether it was church, classrooms, theaters, restaurants, and yes, trade shows. With these imposed restrictions, outdoor enthusiasts took it in the teeth when it came to Sportsman and Boat Shows. But 2022 showed signs of improvement, breathing air into the oxygen-starved industry. Throughout the Pacific Northwest, what last year was a virtual echo chamber this year was an elbow-to-elbow, bustling free-for-all. Eager outdoor enthusiasts were hungry, and these trade shows helped many turn their dreams to realities, while others better prepared for yet another season of reveries. If you’re the person that makes that annual journey to your favorite sporting or boat show, you will quickly put together the list

Six Washington wolves were poisoned Six wolves are dead after ingesting poison and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is offering over $51,000 in rewards for information that leads to a conviction. In February, officials discovered four dead wolves about 65 miles northwest of Spokane, Washington; two more dead wolves were discovered within a month, according to the New York Times. All were members of the Wedge pack in Stevens County. The pack had a reputation for trouble. In July 2020, an adult female was lethally removed after repeat livestock depredation on public and private land and other members were also lethally removed for the same issue. While singular wolves have been poached across the state, the death of six is in a league of its own. “With increased patrols and enforcement presence we are hopeful that this type of illegal activity is not replicated by those responsible for the initial poaching or attempts made by potential copycats,” said WDFW spoke

Wolves likely responsible for livestock predation in Colorado What killed 18 cow calves near Meeker, Colorado? The livestock owner reported the depredation last Tuesday to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). While the deaths could be linked to wolves, it would mean that new wolves “have migrated into the state,” according to The Denver Post. In 2020, CPW said that wolves had returned to the state after a confirmed sighting of six wolves near an animal carcass in Moffat County. The other known wolf pack resides in North Park near Walden with about eight members; however, they went missing after the pack killed “at least five cows and two dogs,” meaning that they were likely “illegally killed,” according to Michael Robinson with the Center for Biological Diversity. Robinson believes the Moffat pack, which has also disappeared, was also likely illegally killed as well. CPW spokesman Travis Duncan said that the current investigation spans two weeks and several miles on White River Natio

Hunting Ammo: What to Look for in a Big-Game Bullet Hunting bullets have come a long way since the first round lead ball was launched game-ward from a long-barreled muzzleloader. Bullets now are long and streamlined, tipped with space-age material, and constructed of copper married to lead through special bonding processes. They are incredibly accurate, highly aerodynamic, and boast superb terminal performance. They are the finest killing projectiles the world has ever known; that’s a great thing for us as hunters. Could vaccines for animals instead of humans help prevent the next COVID or monkeypox pandemics? How do we vaccinate wildlife? "There are many ways you can go about vaccinating wildlife" Scott Nuisner, a Professor of Biological Sciences and one of the authors of a study on the topic first published in Nature, Ecology & Evolution in 2020, told Euronews Next. "We already do this actually in North America and Europe to control rabies," he explained. "For instance, in North America, we vaccinate raccoons against rabies by dropping vaccines that are in edible baits across the landscape, out of planes or helicopters. And the raccoons eat it and they become vaccinated against rabies. And, of course, that protects us and our livestock and our pets". This solution has proven quite successful but Nuisner specified that, for it to work, you must have the right resources available - funds to fly helicopters around and pay for the baits - and a species that’s "long-lived". "Raccoons are short-

Alaska (Russian: Аляска) is a state located in the Western United States on the northwest extremity of North America. A semi-exclave of the U.S., it borders the Canadian province of British Columbia and the Yukon territory to the east; it also shares a maritime border with the Russian Federation's Chukotka Autonomous Okrug to the west, just across the Bering Strait. To the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort seas of the Arctic Ocean, while the Pacific Ocean lies to the south and southwest. Alaska is by far the largest U.S. state by area, comprising more total area than the next three largest states (Texas, California, and Montana) combined. It represents the seventh largest subnational division in the world. It is the third-least populous and the most sparsely populated state, but by far the continent's most populous territory located mostly north of the 60th parallel, with a population of 736,081 as of 2020—more than quadruple the combined populations of Northern Canada and Greenland.

Faroe Islanders are capping the number of dolphins they kill - but campaigners say it won’t save any The Faroe Islands is capping the number of dolphins that can be killed in its traditional hunt, after last year’s slaughter of more than 1,400 drew international condemnation. Under the four-centuries-old tradition, sea mammals are driven into shallow waters around the North Atlantic archipelago by motorboats, before being butchered for their meat and blubber. Now whalers will only be able to catch 500 Atlantic white-sided dolphins a year as part of the ‘grindadráp’ hunt, which takes place between July and September. The government on the semi-independent Danish islands announced the capping measure on Sunday, saying it was “in response to the unusually large catch” on 14 September 2021. “Aspects of that catch were not satisfactory, in particular the unusually large number of dolphins killed,” the government said in a statement. This, it says, “is unlikely to be a sustainable level

The 10 Best States for Snow Goose Hunting Every year, hunters shoot more light geese in these states than anywhere else Even if you didn’t know much about spring snow goose hunting, fields covered with white decoys and parking lots jammed with muddy trailers would reveal hotspots across the country. And for good reason: Depending on the weather and hatch, many areas typically produce year after year. Now and then, however, you hear about a spring destination that surprises you, and some might wonder where hunters actually kill the most light geese. A quick review of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service harvest statistics provides some insight — and a few surprises. Disclaimer: These surveys are estimates and do not differentiate between spring, fall, and winter harvests, and they don’t take into account weather conditions or other factors that might influence success. We’ve compiled a four-season average — 2017-18 through 2020-21 — to get a general trend of recent hunter success. These numbe

Washington wolf livestock rule change up for comment If a new rule is passed, Washington livestock owners will have to prove that they already tried non-lethal conflict methods to deal with wolf depredation before the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) would use lethal measures. WDFW will be collecting public comment on the proposal Feb. 22 to April 11, according to a press release. The proposed rule would amend the language of Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 220-440-080. It would also create a new rule (WAC 220-440-260) that “directs WDFW staff, in consultation with willing, affected livestock producers, as well as affected federal, state, and tribal agencies, to author conflict mitigation plans that would establish area-specific criteria for the use of non-lethal and lethal measures to mitigate wolf-livestock conflict in areas of chronic conflict.” Both proposals are a result of the September 2020 decision by Governor Jay Inslee to create rules that would both r

Hank the Tank evades capture again! The 500-pound black bear dubbed “Hank the Tank” is still on the lam after breaking into two more California homes. To date, Hank has caused “extensive damage” to 33 properties and broken into about 28 homes in a Lake Tahoe neighborhood over the past few months, according to CNN. The latest break-in occurred on February 18. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department reported that the bear didn’t go into a garage after trash, but instead physically broke through a window into the home before managing to get out. And while the massive black bear hasn’t attacked any humans or pets, worried residents have been flooding police lines with over 100 individual reports since the black bear began its tirade on the Lake Tahoe neighborhood last spring. “The incidents primarily occurred during the summer and fall of 2021, when the bear was in hyperphagia, adding calories to survive the winter,” says California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) spokesperson P

Judge Issues Injunction Blocking Wisconsin Fall Wolf Hunt A judge on Friday (10/22/2021) halted Wisconsin's fall wolf season two weeks before hunters were set to take to the woods, siding with wildlife advocacy groups who argued holding the hunt would be unconstitutional. Dane County Circuit Judge Jacob Frost issued a temporary injunction halting the season, which was set to begin November 6. The order comes as part of a lawsuit that a coalition of wildlife advocacy groups filed in August seeking to stop the hunt and invalidate a state law authorizing annual seasons. Among other things, the coalition argued that the season is illegal because the (Wisconsin) Department of Natural Resources hasn't updated its regulations setting season parameters, and has been relying on an emergency rule put in place shortly after then-Gov. Scott Walker signed a law in 2012 authorizing annual seasons and a wolf-management plan that hasn't been updated since 2007. Frost said the law creating the wolf
