Youth have more time to complete hunter education while still hunting this fall. Any youth (age 17 and younger) who has completed an online hunter education class will be able to hunt on their own tag, even if they haven’t completed the required in-person field day. With fewer hunter education classes/field days offered this year due to COVID-19, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife will defer the field day requirement for youth hunters for the 2021 hunting season. The field day will still be required to get a hunter education certificate, but can be delayed until after hunting season. “This will provide additional time for any young hunter to get their hunter education certification,” said Antonio Salgado, ODFW Recruitment/Retention/Reactivation Coordinator. “They will still have to complete a field day to be fully certified. Heavy bodied and long-legged, with a drooping nose, moose (Alces alces) are the largest members of the deer family. They range in color from golden brown to almost black, depending upon the season and the age of the animal. Full-grown males (bulls) stand almost 6 ft (1.8 m) tall at the shoulder, and males in prime condition weigh from 1,200 to 1,600 lbs (542 –725 kg). Adult females are somewhat smaller and weigh 800 to 1,300 lbs (364 – 591 kg). A 1,600-lb (726-kg) moose will dress out at about 950 lbs (431 kg), yielding approximately 500 lbs (227 kg) of meat. Alaskans and nonresidents annually harvest 6,000 to 8,000 moose, which translates into about 3.5 million pounds of usable meat. Only bull moose have antlers. How to Track a Buck in the Snow Have You Ever Slipped Up on a Deer in the Snow? No doubt about it, the vast majority of whitetail hunting today is done from some type of elevated platform – treestand, tripod or shooting house. That wasn’t always the case. To this day, many northwoods hunters still practice the age-old art of tracking in the snow. So can you, and here are a few tips to help you along the trail. To follow a track you first need to find one, and the more ground you cover the better the odds. Typically, the big woods hunters will drive the backwoods roads before daylight. These are often dirt logging roads, some accessible only by 4WD vehicle, which is what you want. The Roadless Rule in the Tongass National Forest is Vital for Both Hunters and Brown Bears There’s a long history of Alaskan hunting guides stepping up to protect the Tongass. In the mid-1980s an old, dying bear hunter named Ralph Young sat in the back of a skiff, squinting through the rain at the ocean and mountains of Southeast Alaska. At 78 years of age, cancer has pretty much taken away my ability to climb mountains in search of elk. Don’t feel sorry for me, I have killed plenty of elk, mostly cows for the good eating. The good Lord has allowed me more than a charmed life. I have a wonderful family with great kids, grandkids and great grandkids and I have fly fished (my main sport) all over the world, sometimes in places I never dreamed I would go. My youngest son, Stefan, and I decided to do something we had never done before. We planned to go on a guided elk hunt. I work for the International Sportsmen’s Expositions telling fly-fishing tales and doing fly tying demonstrations. In my spare time I began to canvas the floor, down in Denver, looking for a suitable elk-hunting outfit. D I N O S A U R I am still in shock. This hunt was exceptionally meaningful to me and Dinosaur truly is a bull of a lifetime!! We were nearly 26 miles into the backcountry with the pack string. We had spent a lot of time behind the glass learning all of the bulls in the area. The old bull we had nicknamed Dinosaur, was one that stood out for his age, distinct bugle and incredible mass. He was an old warrior. The thought that I would be placing my hands on Dinosaur as my personal bull never crossed my mind. I would have been happy with any legal bull I was given the opportunity on. I was surrounded by some of my favorite people in the entire world and this hunt/bull/opportunity would have never been possible without them. Huge thank you to Josh and Laci Martolgio.
