Field Tested: Browning Trail Cameras Trail cameras serve two purposes: tracking and security. Slimline options do their best at remaining undetected to human beings who might be trespassing on your property, while larger, higher-definition models will draw the most detail out of whatever sets it off. Earlier this year, my wife and I obtained an eight-acre piece of property that has remained untouched for nearly a decade. As such, it has become a bit of a sanctuary for animals that run off from the adjacent state game lands abutting its corner. Property of this nature is often desirable, as it typically makes for an easy hunt due to its long vacancy. However, for the same reason, it becomes attractive to those that want to have a private hunting experience without paying for land of their own. With that in mind, I scoured Browning’s website to find affordable cameras to serve my purposes, and came up with the Strike Force Gen 5 and the Dark Ops HD Max.Features The features on both camePost: 23 September 18:43
The Barn Owl is a nocturnal raptor measuring nearly 40 cm, with a wingspan of nearly a metre. It has a characteristic face, heart-shaped, white plumage on its breast and mottled yellow-brown on its back and wings. Its legs are feathered right down to its claws. The wing-feathers have a flexible edge and sound-absorbent down, in such a way that it flies noiseless and thus surprises its prey, essentially small rodents. Highly useful in countrysides, this bird however has had a bad reputation in the past; its disturbing appearance, its hoots and its nocturnal activity in attics and bell-towers frightened the credulous and the Barn Owl was thought to be a harbinger of misfortune: in order to dispel that bad augur, they used to be killed and nailed to barn doors – not so long ago by the way… Sedentary, the Barn Own spends the winter without migrating. It nests on the ground or in niches of towers and barns, laying from 4 to 13 eggs which hatch after approximately two weeks; the older chiPost: 30 September 18:38

Dakota Model 76 A few decades ago, a commercial airline pilot and custom gun enthusiast named Don Allen set out to build the finest rifle that he could. The Dakota Model 76 was the result. The Dakota was based on the legendary Pre-64 Winchester Model 70, with a couple of unique innovations thrown in. Unlike most production guns, Dakota 76s are machined from bar stock rather than forged or cast. The result is a graceful and reliable design for hunters who aren’t afraid to put their money where their mouth is. Jaw-dropped walnut is common on Dakotas and the fit and finish is on-par with all but the best custom gunmakers.Post: 25 September 18:34

Bergara B-14 When this rifle made a splash in America, gun-counter savants were wont to call it “the rifle the Remington 700 should have been.” Blasphemous though that may be to Remington disciples, the fact is the B-14 is an exceptional rifle and has garnered several national awards. Patterned much like the M700, it has a better extractor and bolt release. Manufactured in Bergara, Spain, the B-14 has quickly garnered a reputation for superb accuracy, thanks to the unrelenting quality of Bergara barrels. This reputation is supported by a sub-MOA accuracy guarantee. Versions range from true mountain rifles to heavy, configurable PRS competition guns. There’s even a B-14 R rimfire PRS-type training rifle. The $865 B-14 Ridge model shown here won the NRA Golden Bullseye Best Rifle award in 2018. It has a threaded muzzle, a composite stock with soft-touch finish, and integral epoxy-pillar bedding. It’s an excellent all-around hunting rifle that won’t let you down..Post: 11 October 16:43

How to Make Pemmican f you’ve ever had a meat or jerky bar made of finely chopped dried meat and perhaps berries, you may be familiar with pemmican. Pemmican consists of lean, dried meat – usually beef nowadays, but bison, deer, and elk were common back in the day) which is crushed to a powder and mixed with an equal amount of hot, rendered fat, usually beef tallow. Sometimes crushed, dried berries are added as well. For long periods of time, people can subsist entirely on pemmican, drawing on the fat for energy and the protein for strength, and glucose, when needed. A beaver may seem like a harmful animal, but in fact his diligence and desire to transform landscapes for himself are so strong that they are more than successful. What kind of landscape does a beaver need? Swampy. With bushes that have delicious bark, with a deep enough reservoir in which you can stash branches for the winter until spring. How is this beneficial to nature? For example, during one year, a hectare of wetlands absorbs 7-15 times more carbon dioxide from the air than a hectare of forest: 550-1800 kg; and emits 7-15 times more oxygen: 260-700 kg. Numerous mollusks and aquatic insects settle in the spill created by beavers, which in turn attract muskrats and waterfowl. The fish, once in favorable conditions (and the beaver deepens the reservoir and creates a network of channels), begins to multiply faster. Trees felled by beavers serve as food for hares and many ungulates, which gnaw bark from trunks and branches. The sap flowing out of the eroded trees in spring is lPost: 25 March 03:49

A design will give you practical steps on how you want the room to look and feel. Start with planning the purpose of this room. Is this just going to house your trophies? Will it be a centerpiece of your home? How many trophies do you plan to have in the future? These questions can help solidify what type of hanging racks you want to use and if you want to add special features such as seating, tv, bar, etc. It’s important to nail down these details first before you even start putting up any deer. Hunting Can Be Good for Wildlife Populations – If Managed Correctly. This may sound counterintuitive, but reducing the number of animals in a population can help the remaining individuals to survive through the winter. “Harvesting or other means of regulating an animal population can sometimes have a positive effect by reducing the competition for food,” says Bart Peeters, a postdoctoral fellow at NTNU’s (the Norwegian University of Science and Technology) Department of Biology. This only makes sense for species limited by food availability. The results of the study have been published in the journal Ecology Letters and could prove useful in managing various species.Post: 1 March 15:16
