Hunting in Centre-West Burkina Faso: Seasonal bush hunting, small game species, traditional Mossi-Gourounsi hunting groups, shared meat customs, and informal regulation Fertile savannahs and forest remnants amid rolling farmland The Centre-Ouest Region of Burkina Faso is one of the most agriculturally productive areas in the country, defined by a patchwork of cultivated fields, wooded savannahs, and scattered gallery forests. The terrain is gently undulating, with numerous seasonal streams and fertile valleys, particularly around Ziro, Boulkiemdé, and Sissili provinces. While farming dominates, the natural landscape still holds ecological value — especially in areas where sacred groves, streamside vegetation, and uncultivated fallow lands support pockets of biodiversity. For generations, hunting has played a supplementary yet significant role in this region’s rural life, woven into the same seasonal patterns that guide sowing, harvesting, and celebration. Hunting in Centre-East: Transitional savannahs, Gourmantché hunting rites, small game, sacred groves, and community-based regulation Windswept grasslands, wooded corridors, and a land of thresholds The Centre-Est Region of Burkina Faso sits between the dry heart of the country and the greener slopes of the east. It is a landscape of open savannahs, scattered forest patches, and low, undulating hills that stretch across provinces like Koulpélogo, Boulgou, and Kouritenga. The Nakambé and Nazinon rivers thread through this terrain, supporting small pockets of biodiversity that persist between farmland and fire-swept bush. While agriculture dominates much of the land, remnant wildlife habitats — sacred groves, seasonal wetlands, and forested village perimeters — still echo with the stories and footpaths of traditional hunters. Gourmantché hunters and the balance of bush and spirit Among the Gourmantché people, hunting is both a practical skill and a cultural ritual. Traditionally, th

One of the small ethnic groups of China, the Kyrgyz, who own falconry techniques and preserve the traditions of this art form, lives compactly in this area. The earliest image of falconary is a bas–relief discovered on the territory of modern Turkey and dated to the 13th century BC. Исследование опубликовано в журнале People and Nature.

Hotel in Hunting Island What You Will See The Island has three miles of walkable beaches, a historic lighthouse, and ample opportunities for bird watching, fishing, crabbing, or shrimping. Shady picnic tables, showers, dressing rooms make a day trip to the beach manageable. The Island’s marshes there were used for the Vietnam War scenes in the movie Forrest Gump. Jungle and water camp scenes for the movie G.I. Jane were also shot on Hunting Island. As you drive in, you go through a maritime forest with soaring pines and palms. Nestled into this woodland setting is the Visitors Center where you can get a park map and brochure, and see exhibits on the historic lighthouse as well as on the natural flora and fauna. A small auditorium hosts educational programs on the island’s nature and history.

Hunting in Bangui: Exploring Geography, Navigating Regulations, and Discovering Local Traditions Bangui, the capital and largest city of the Central African Republic, is primarily an urban center where traditional rural hunting practices have largely given way to modern lifestyles. However, the city’s proximity to natural areas and its role as a hub for bushmeat markets mean that hunting continues to influence daily life, indirectly supporting food supply chains and local economies. While hunting is not commonly practiced within the city itself, the demand for wild meat and the cultural heritage of hunting remain present. Geography and Natural Features of Bangui for Hunting Situated on the northern banks of the Ubangi River and surrounded by forested hills and savannas, Bangui lies in a transitional ecological zone. While urban development has overtaken much of the landscape, the outskirts of the city—particularly toward Bimbo, Boali, and Mpoko—still contain bushland and riparian zo

Bear Gun Shootout: The Drill To get a better handle on this debate I enlisted the help of two fellow pistoleros: Sean Murphy, a USPSA Grand Master, and Outdoor Life staff writer Tyler Freel, who by virtue of living in Alaska hunts bears every year. We conducted a live-fire experiment at Gunsite Academy in the form of a simple, but challenging drill. The three of us shot an array of five knockdown steel poppers from far to near to simulate a bear charge. The farthest target was in the center and then we zig-zagged from far left to far right and then to near left and near right to add in erratic motion and increase the stress level. The farthest target was approximately 20 yards away and the closest were about 12 yards downrange. Watch the video above to see the drill for yourself.

Just stumbled upon some old photos in my archive and couldn't help but reminisce about my first hunting experience. It was a mix of excitement, nerves, and anticipation all rolled into one. The early morning start, the scent of the woods, the thrill of the chase – it was a feeling like no other. As I look back on those moments captured in those snapshots, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to connect with nature in such a raw and primal way. The camaraderie with fellow hunters, the quiet moments of solitude, the satisfaction of a successful hunt – it's all part of the experience. Hunting isn't just about the kill; it's about the journey, the memories made, and the lessons learned along the way. It's a chance to disconnect from the noise of everyday life and immerse yourself in the beauty of the great outdoors. Who else has experienced the rush of their first hunt? Bowhunter injured by angry moose You don’t want an angry moose after you – especially if it knows you tried to kill it. Rescuers responded to a distress alert from a bowhunter’s GPS in Larimer County, Colorado on Tuesday after the hunter attempted to shoot a moose with an arrow. However, when he missed, the moose “charged and then gored” the man in a remote area off Long Draw Road and Highway 14 in the Poudre Canyon, according to Channel 9 News. The response time was “escalated” once officials learned that the hunter likely had “serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.” “Deputies located the hunter, who had hiked part of the way out of the campground by other hunters,” said Larimer County Sheriff’s office (LCSO) spokesperson Jenevieve Kramer. The first deputy was able to provide first aid and place a tourniquet on the injured man’s arm while keeping him comfortable as they waited for Poudre Canyon Fire Protection District paramedics. Paramedics. The hunter was airlifted to

Wolves likely responsible for livestock predation in Colorado What killed 18 cow calves near Meeker, Colorado? The livestock owner reported the depredation last Tuesday to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). While the deaths could be linked to wolves, it would mean that new wolves “have migrated into the state,” according to The Denver Post. In 2020, CPW said that wolves had returned to the state after a confirmed sighting of six wolves near an animal carcass in Moffat County. The other known wolf pack resides in North Park near Walden with about eight members; however, they went missing after the pack killed “at least five cows and two dogs,” meaning that they were likely “illegally killed,” according to Michael Robinson with the Center for Biological Diversity. Robinson believes the Moffat pack, which has also disappeared, was also likely illegally killed as well. CPW spokesman Travis Duncan said that the current investigation spans two weeks and several miles on White River Natio

How to stay safe while hiking in hunting season. Wearing orange is not the only precaution hikers - and dog owners - are encouraged to take. Fall is popular with all walks of outdoorspeople, including both hikers and hunters. So, too, should hikers and bikers. Maria Bedo-Calhoun, president of the 3500 Club, says a recent hike raised some alarms for her. “I was out hiking yesterday, and it didn’t seem lik
