Redbone Coonhound Hunting Dog: Traits, Training & Field Mastery The Redbone Coonhound is a quintessential American hunting dog, revered for its tenacity, agility, and soulful bay. With roots tracing back to the Southern United States, this breed has earned its place among serious hunters for its ability to track and tree game in rugged terrain. Whether you’re chasing raccoons in Appalachian forests or trailing cougars in the Rockies, the Redbone is a reliable partner. --- 🎯 Game Targets: What Redbone Coonhounds Hunt Redbone Coonhounds are versatile hunters with a strong prey drive and a “cold nose” — meaning they can follow older scent trails with precision. Their primary quarry includes: • Raccoons – Their specialty. Redbones are bred to track, chase, and tree raccoons. • Opossums and squirrels – Common small game targets. • Big game – With proper training, Redbones can handle larger animals like bears and cougars, using their courage and endurance to tree rather than confront.

Roe deer hunting in Belarus: a great shot and tips for choosing a thermal imaging scope Roe deer hunting is an exciting activity that requires patience and skill. In our hunting club in Belarus, we are always happy to share experiences and successes. In this post, we will tell you about a recent hunt, where a hunter made a great shot in tall grass, and also provide useful tips for choosing a thermal imaging scope. Recently, one of our hunters shared a video of a successful roe deer hunt. After observing a pair of roe deer for a long time, he was able to make an accurate shot, which was possible thanks to high-quality optics and a careful approach to the hunting process. This is an example of how important it is to properly prepare and choose the right equipment. A reliable thermal imaging scope is necessary for successful roe deer hunting. We recommend paying attention to the RikaNV Lesnik 350L thermal imaging scope. This device provides excellent visibility in low light conditions

New Jersey to reinstate black bear season New Jersey’s annual black bear hunt is back on. The announcement came yesterday from Governor Phil Murphy, who opposed the hunt, after an increase in bear sightings and bear-human interactions as well as a potential population tipping point of over 4,000 bears within the next two years, according to WPVI ABC News. If approved, the hunt could be held as early as next month from Dec. 5 to 10 with an additional hunt slated for Dec. 14 to 17 if the reduction quota of 20% isn’t met during the first hunt. “While I committed to ending the bear hunt, the data demands that we act now to prevent tragic bear-human interactions,” said Murphy. As GOHUNT previously reported, Murphy canceled the controversial annual bear hunts as part of his campaign promise. As a result, the state canceled the hunt in 2020 and didn’t hold one in 2021. “Bear hunting in New Jersey has been a highly controversial topic for several decades, but only because officials like Mu

The SPAS-12 was designed to function primarily in semi-automatic mode, with the pump-action mode used to reliably fire low-pressure ammunition such as tear gas rounds or less-lethal bean bags. The firing mode is switched by depressing the button under the fore-grip and also sliding it forwards or backwards until it clicks into position allowing the rotating sleeve to open or close the two gas ports. The semi-automatic mode functions with a short-stroke gas piston system. When a shell is fired, the pressure makes the bolt move rearward but the bolt will stop before opening as it deploys a single top locking lug. The gas vents into the barrel and the gas port is located towards the end of the barrel. From the gas port, the gas vents downwards into the gas block where it pushes the piston rearward. Because of the presence of the magazine tube and to avoid the use of a top-mounted gas system, the gas block and the piston are annular, along with the piston spring they enclose the magazine

Webley & Scott Inertia Driven Shotgun Review The Webley & Scott Inertia Driven Shotgun is an impressive piece of firearm engineering that has made a name for itself in the shooting community. Having owned and used this shotgun for several months now, I felt it was time to share my thoughts, highlighting both the positives and the negatives of this model. Pros: Reliability: This shotgun operates on the inertia-driven system, which means it cycles smoothly and reliably under various conditions. Whether it’s a sunny day at the range or a damp early morning hunt, I have found it to perform consistently, which is crucial for any serious shooter. Lightweight and Ergonomics: One of the first things I noticed was how lightweight the Webley & Scott shotgun is. This makes it easy to carry for extended periods, especially during long hunts. Additionally, the ergonomics of the stock are well designed, providing a comfortable grip and a natural aiming alignment. Customization Options: The ava

How To Take Better Hunting Photos You’ve just shot a big-game animal. The adrenaline is pumping; you and your buddies are stoked, and then the reality sets in that the work is now upon you to butcher and pack-out the caribou, moose, bear, sheep, deer, goat, elk, bison or musk ox. In the haste to get started butchering, you snap off a few photos, trying to capture the animal and moment, but without forethought, the photos rarely end up capturing the elation and satisfaction of the hunt or the image of the quarry. To prevent that bad news from hitting you when you get home from your next trip and start scrolling through your images to pique the memory, here are some thoughts on how to maximize your photos of the hunt. Fill most of the frame with the hunter and animal Take photos that fill the entire frame with hunter and animal. Have the hunter change positions in relation to the animal. Try different poses crouched near the animal, holding its head, propping up the head or body, and

Many states had blazing hot streaks and little to no rain for most of the summer. This created devastating drought conditions and widespread fires. More than 95% of the West was in a drought in August. Extreme drought conditions can be found in 14 states, stretching from Minnesota to Washington and down through New Mexico. If you’re planning to hunt out West this year, it’s important to understand how drought affects wildlife and their patterns, and how you can use the conditions to your advantage.

Bear Gun Shootout: The Drill To get a better handle on this debate I enlisted the help of two fellow pistoleros: Sean Murphy, a USPSA Grand Master, and Outdoor Life staff writer Tyler Freel, who by virtue of living in Alaska hunts bears every year. We conducted a live-fire experiment at Gunsite Academy in the form of a simple, but challenging drill. The three of us shot an array of five knockdown steel poppers from far to near to simulate a bear charge. The farthest target was in the center and then we zig-zagged from far left to far right and then to near left and near right to add in erratic motion and increase the stress level. The farthest target was approximately 20 yards away and the closest were about 12 yards downrange. Watch the video above to see the drill for yourself.

England and Wales law on foxhunting unworkable, says police chief Trail hunts used as a loophole for unlawful chasing and killing of animals, Matt Longman tells campaigners England’s most senior police officer on foxhunting has said the law on the crime is not working because it permits trail hunts that have become a “smokescreen” for the continued illegal persecution of animals. Ch Supt Matt Longman, the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead on foxhunting, was speaking at the launch of a coalition against illegal hunting led by the League Against Cruel Sports and backed by more than 30 charities including the RSPCA. Longman, the police commander for Plymouth, said: “The Hunting Act is not working effectively and illegal hunting is still common practice.” Under the act, hunting mammals with hounds is banned but trail hunts using the scent of animals are allowed to take place. Longman said hunts were using trail hunts as a loophole to carry on hunting foxes and other animals. He said:

The 5 Best Thermal Monoculars of 2024 Everybody wants to know what goes bump in the night, even if it doesn’t bump and even if it’s not nighttime. Happily, thermal monoculars, a new and energetic category of gear, often identify what used to be invisible. They can help you see everything from human intruders on the other side of a fence, to coyotes and raccoons crouching in the dark, to a problematic wire in a household electrical outlet. We’re talking about monoculars, rangefinders, and cameras that use temperature variations, rather than visible light, to form images that can be captured as photographs or videos, or simply delivered to your eye to answer that ancient question: what’s out there? I’ve used this new class of “optics” over the past year to find newborn calves in a deadly blizzard, to find my ice-fishing buddies in the fog, to detect hidden electrical problems that might burn my house down, to hunt coyotes at midnight, and to finally even the odds on crop-raiding feral

The Long Game There is still no cure for CWD, and unfortunately, the short-term outlook isn’t positive. Yet CWD won’t seriously affect herd numbers until a sufficiently high percentage of deer contract it, and that just hasn’t happened yet in most places. Each summer, I get excellent trail camera photos of outwardly healthy whitetails meandering through the hills and valleys of our farm, masking the CWD issues at hand. We still have high deer densities and mostly healthy looking whitetails, with no signs of a population decline. I asked Sumners when we might see whitetail populations decline in southern Wisconsin. “In areas like that, with such a large population of deer, the proportion of the population that will have to die from CWD for the average hunter to see a visible decline would have to be significant," he said. "It’s a numbers game, and we haven’t gotten to the point of the disease where population decline is occurring.” Still, knowing what we know, we’re torn about how to

Hardest Deer to Hunt Every hunter loves to boast about their stories on how hard hunting their buck was. But are those really that difficult? Today we will be talking about the hardest deer to hunt out there in the wilderness. When it comes to hunting, it is not just about finding the animal. This journey involves a lot of other challenges like facing bitter mountain winds, climbing over boulders. Such hunts are enough for reducing even those with reasonable fitness to a broken-hearted, weak-kneed puddle if the hunter is not aware of the challenges that come when hunting the hardest animals. Coues Deer The big deal for hunting Coues deer is to pursue them in the rough region where they thrive. These slight gray whitetail bucks rarely grow more than 130 in of antler, however, they are adept at disappearing into the cover. They use cactus vegetation and a scant thorn in the desert to stay hidden. Another challenging part about hunting this deer is they don’t offer large targets and al

Nullarbor Plain’s Hunting Calendar: When the Limestone Plains Awaken - Camel, Kangaroo and Outback Pursuits Hunting Regulations & Seasonal Framework in the Nullarbor Plain The Nullarbor Plain operates under cross-border regulations from both Western Australia and South Australia, with year-round hunting permitted for feral camels, goats, foxes and cats across most areas. Kangaroo harvesting requires special tags available only to professional shooters under the National Parks and Wildlife Act. The arid climate creates extreme seasonal variations - summer temperatures often exceed 45°C (November-February), restricting most hunting to cooler months (April-September). Unlike neighboring regions, the Nullarbor maintains unique restrictions along the Eyre Highway corridor with a 10km no-hunting buffer zone. Recent reforms include mandatory GPS tracking of camel harvests and complete bans on hunting within 50km of Aboriginal communities following the 2023 Cultural Heritage Act amendments.

How to Call in a Bull Elk Like a Calling Champion Do You Use These Techniques? You might expect a top elk caller to focus his hunting advice on proper call selection, volume, tone, timing or teamwork. But one Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation World Elk Calling Championship winner says perhaps the most critical step to calling in elk is how you set up to intercept an approaching bull. Corey Jacobsen of Boise, Idaho, is one of the most decorated world champion elk callers in the country, as well as a consistently successful bowhunter. Jacobsen offers the following key advice on calling elk into bow range: “The setup might be the most critical step," Jacobsen said. "It always plays a major role in determining the outcome of a hunt. I can’t count how many hunts have been blown by a bad setup — too much brush to shoot through, not enough cover to hide in, no shooting lanes, inconsistent wind currents, caught in the open, the list goes on and on. “I always repeat one word to myself when I’m s

The Truth About Western Wolf Hunting A deep dive into one of the most controversial hunting discussions in America Predator hunting is a popular pursuit during the winter and in some areas of the Rocky Mountains, that includes the opportunity to hunt the gray wolf. Gray wolf hunting and trapping seasons have been open on and off across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming for the past decade. These elusive apex predators are difficult to pursue, but they provide an exciting opportunity for hunters, as well as the opportunity help wildlife management agencies keep populations in check. Wolves trigger passionate emotions that lead to arguments both for and against hunting. And no matter how many years pass with wolf hunting seasons in place, they still make headlines with groups like the Humane Society of the United States and Defenders of Wildlife routinely pushing to have hunts shut down. Meanwhile, wildlife agencies maintain their positions that gray wolf populations are sustainable enough to

The 3 Most Expensive Hunts in North America If you’re saving up money for a once-in-a-lifetime dream adventure, why not shoot for the moon? If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy first? Most of us think for a few moments before answering. Some might go for a sports car. Others might tour Europe. How about a beachfront mansion with an elevator, movie theatre, pool, and private chef? But others might spend the money on hunting. Where would you go and what would you hunt for if cost were no obstacle? African elephant? New Zealand red stag? Spanish Ibex? Or, would you stick to North America, where we have more than two dozen big-game hunting opportunities? Some are very affordable and DIY friendly, but others require hunting with a guide and could cost tens of thousands of dollars. Yes, you read that correctly. Since we’re dreaming here, let’s look at the details. Miranda's Take I’ve been fortunate enough to hunt several different species across 16 states, but none
