Wildebeest: Both blue and black wildebeest are common targets, offering a challenging shot due to their size and speed. Blesbok: A medium-sized antelope with a distinctive white blaze on its face. Fishing in Sweden Fishing in Sweden in its 100,000 lakes, wild waterways and along the coast is a trip of a lifetime. Come hook a salmon, trout or Arctic char. Sweden’s biggest lake is Lake Vänern (south west) at around 5,600 square kilometres surface area. It’s so big it has its own weather system, and an archipelago of some 20,000 islands. If you’re thinking that this creates fantastic angling possibilities you’d be right; you can go trolling for landlocked salmon and trout, pike and zander. Southern Sweden features mostly lowland lakes holding pike, zander and perch and coarse species. As you travel northwards, the landscape changes; more rugged, hilly and forest carpeted with thousands of lakes holding pike, perch and carp in the far south, as well as brown trout, grayling and zander. As you approach the tree line in northern Sweden, where the giant spruce forests end, Arctic tundra, meadows, glaciers and towering mountain peaks take over. Up here the lakes are full of brown tr

THE WARTHOG IS A DANGEROUS BEAST. After the release of the Disney animated buddy comedy, The Lion King and The Lion King's Timon & Pumbaa. Where Timon and Pumbaa, the warthog and the meerkat were responsible for the humorous line, many decided that wild animals can be really cute and funny… In the video, people who have no experience interacting with wild animals are feeding a warthog. At the moment when she tries to stroke him, the warthog cuts through the woman's skin and muscles in the area where the femoral artery passes. Judging by the huge amount of blood that flowed out of the wound in a few seconds, it is more than likely that the warthog's tusk could have cut through part of this important vessel responsible for transporting blood from the heart to the leg. Such injuries, without urgent hospitalization, will lead to dizziness, loss of consciousness and even, in critical cases, death of the victim. Warthogs are not as cute as in the Disney cartoons. They are wild and dangero

Dozens of drunk grizzlies hit by trains for decades Drunk grizzly bears have been hit by trains near Glacier National Park in Montana for decades. Spilled grain mixed with moisture from snow and rain equal the perfect concoction to both lure bears and dull their senses. This unfortunate equation means that the bears are too slow to outrun the trains heading their way. Fatalities linked to the fermented grain have been tallied since 1980 with a total of 63 grizzly bears killed along the rail line that stretches over Marias Pass and the Great Bear Wilderness, according to the Cowboy State Daily. This year, three have been killed so far, and, in 2019, which was the worst year on record, eight grizzlies were killed by trains. While two grizzly populations roam the Lower 48, the ones being impacted by trains come from the Northern Continental Divide grizzly population. Chuck Neal, a retired federal ecologist, says the spilled grain “can be a tempting treat for bears” and that “with enoug

Henry X Models: The Wait is Finally Over The Henry X Models Have Arrived The concept for the Henry X Model series began at the 2018 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Dallas, Texas where a blacked-out .45-70 rifle and .410 bore shotgun were put on display to gauge everyone’s reaction to this departure from Henry’s usual blued-steel or brass receivers and American walnut furniture. Suffice it to say that the response among showgoers was positive, but little did they know that Henry Repeating Arms had more up their sleeves. With the release of Henry’s first rifle to feature a side loading gate looming in production behind closed doors, the vision for the production version of the Henry X Model became clearer. In January of 2020, Henry Repeating Arms announced the X Model Series to the world in Las Vegas at the SHOT Show. With no booth on the show floor, Henry dropped the news with a Lever Action X Model .45-70 at Federal Premium’s booth alongside a new line of ammunition called HammerDo

Talarik Creek Lodge: Hunting for Trophy Rainbow Trout I answered him that it was not, and he shrugged off the 18-inch Arctic grayling on the end of my line like it was a piece of weed. My wife had sent us fishing that evening to catch some fresh grayling for dinner and our goal was now achieved, with four large, translucent-white-fleshed fish having been plucked from the cold waters of the Newhalen River. The author’s son Lucas with what he calls “a real fish” also defined as any rainbow trout over 20 inches caught on a fly rod. What is it about rainbow trout that incites such excitement? Why is it that when fishing guides congregate around a fire the conversation always finds its way to rainbows, not salmon, not char, not pike, but definitely rainbows? “Keep it in the water,” “Careful, don’t drop it,” and “Nice release,” are all phrases I’ve heard said and spoken myself. I have a personal admiration for the green-speckled creatures, and rainbow trout fishing has a cult following tha

8 Great New Hunting Rifles for 2022 Though I absolutely love those rifles which have been with me for decades, and have shared so many indelible memories, I still get excited to see the new crop of rifles introduced each year, and always ponder the possibilities of creating new memories with a new model. A hunting rifle can become a life-long friend, but like any friend, there’s the first time you meet, and like so many friendships, sometimes things don’t work out. Whether it’s a long-range bolt gun for sheep, elk and antelope, or a thumper of a lever gun destined to pursue bear in the spring vegetation, or an all-around deer gun, the possibilities are endless. Let’s take a gander at what’s new for 2022 for the American hunter.1. Marlin 1895 SBL and Trapper Rescued from the dustbin by Ruger, Marlin was purchased in the breakup of the Freedom Group, and they are coming back with a vengeance. Tying Up Creating a drop-shot rig is easy. A small finesse worm is usually used for finicky bass, but always choose long, slender plastics that are free of legs and pinchers that can twist your line. Drop-shotting favorites are traditionally modest, straight plastic worms and minnows; the softer, the better. Some companies are now using “super plastics,” which are incredibly buoyant and allow the lure to float up, rather than settle, on a drop-shot rig, and can help trigger more bites. Z-Man Fishing Products’ ElaZtech lures are a good example. You need to match those small baits with an equally small hook. In snag-free areas, simply nose-hooking the worm is most effective, so a light 1/0 hook is a good starting point. Most die-hard drop-shotters rely on the Gamakatsu split-shot / drop-shot hook. You can Texas-rig your plastics when fishing around brush or heavy cover but, again, stay with a fairly light hook. The VMC WM worm hook is a good one. In any case, always tie your hook w

How the Grunt Call Came to Be Realtree pro staffer Brad Harris was grunting up whitetails long before deer calling was cool Brad Harris was high in a tree in Mingo Swamp in southeast Missouri when a 6-point buck walked by at about 80 yards. Harris doesn’t remember the exact year, but it was in the ’70s. He was working in the mines back in those days, and he was among several in a group who loved to bowhunt and spent about every free minute of a break talking about bows, arrows, broadheads, and whitetails. This was back in the day, Harris says, when top-of-the-line hunting equipment was a 45-pound Shakespeare recurve with cedar arrows, and just getting a deer — anything with legal antlers — was a huge accomplishment. One of those buddies at the mine had told Harris that his brother had been hunting and listened as a little buck, standing right under his tree, had made a curious grunting sound. The guy pinched his nose and re-created the grunt himself. Harris had never heard a whitetail

CZ Debuts 600 Series: A Firsthand View If Ford opted to replace the F150 with some new line of pickups, the new design better fill the category. The new series also better be loaded with innovations that aficionados of the brand really do want and need.
