Another shot of the fox I photographed yesterday while driving on Farmer's Loop here in Fairbanks. If you look closely, you can see it's frosty breath around it's muzzle. It's in the exact same spot as the other shot with the exception of the head position. I thought it was a crossfox, but I've had one person say may be a silverfox, and another friend say a melanistic red fox, which is a broad term to mean a red fox with a non standard coloration. I've seen a few non-standard foxes in the East Fairbanks area that I suspect are related, this one included. All within about a six mile radius of each other. This is an area large enough that they are not the same individual, but may be family members.Post: 17 October 17:47

Navigating Trophy Hunting in Africa: Species, Regulations, and Conservation Impact Trophy hunting in Africa remains a popular and often debated topic. Understanding the specifics – the species targeted, the regulations governing hunts, the costs involved, and the potential (and real) impacts on conservation – is crucial for anyone considering participation or seeking an informed perspective on the practice. This article provides a factual overview of trophy hunting in Africa, focusing on demonstrable elements. Key Trophy Species & Their Ranges: The "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and Cape buffalo) are historically significant, but the scope of trophy hunting extends considerably beyond these animals. Key species and their typical hunting locations include: African Lion (Panthera leo): Primarily hunted in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and South Africa. Older males (possessing larger manes) are often targeted. Trophy fees can range from 75,000$ African Leopard (PanthePost: 18 February 12:14
Исследование опубликовано в журнале People and Nature. How the return of poaching threatens India’s tiger success story The poachers who killed T32 in India’s Madhya Pradesh had a simple plan, and executed it at night. Running wire through a field and applying a strong current, they electrocuted the tigress as she patrolled her territory, beating her to death after she lost consciousness. They then pulled out her canines, whiskers and claws before dumping the body in a village well, weighted down by a stone. T32 was declared missing by rangers, until three days later the stone gave way and her remains floated up to the surface of the well. The grim image of the tigress’s mutilated body floating in the water sent ripples of outrage through the conservation community. Here in the dense forests in the heart of central India, the reserves of Madhya Pradesh are playing a crucial role in what the government says is the success story of Project Tiger. Launched 50 years ago, the country’s flagship conservation programme has seen tiger numbers rPost: 24 November 09:24
Hour-to-Hour Elk Hunting Tactics. Elk hunting differs from a traditional whitetail hunt in many ways. Elevation, rugged terrain and extraction adversities separate the two, just to name a handful of complicating distinctions. Another difference is the fact elk keep a schedule that offers hunting opportunities throughout the day, whereas whitetails may shut down. Focus on meeting locations that vary by the hour to engage your leggy quarry instead of napping under an old pine tree. 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. If I had to rate one period as the Holy Grail, it would be dawn through midmorning. Elk seem to be anxious, agitated and goal-oriented. That equals noise, and noisy elk are easy to track. The "anxious" issue arises from elk being exposed at sunrise to potential hunting pressure. They are anxious to move to private digs most hunters will be pressed to reach. Herd bulls are anxious to keep the harem together while moving through a barrage of tag-along satellite bulls. What is the goal? By midmoPost: 17 September 18:10

Hunting for a Hare with a Dog: A Day in the Field with ROS the Spaniel Today, my red spaniel ROS showed exceptional skill in tracking a wounded hare. He picked up the scent of the injured animal, chased it down with determination, and finished the job with a clear voice. The emotions I’m feeling right now are overwhelming - not because of the hunt itself, but because of the dog’s incredible work. Thanks to ROS, there’s no wounded animal left suffering in the field. I’m sure many hunters will understand this feeling. While there are breeds that might perform this task even more spectacularly, ROS is my dog, and this was only his second time hunting hare. It’s all part of his training, and I’m proud to share how it went. Here’s how it unfolded: We entered a thicket and emerged into a small clearing. I spotted a hare running along the edge of the field, clearly flushed out by hunters who had gone further ahead. I took a couple of shots through the tall grass, but ROS didn’t see tPost: 3 January 11:06
How We Tested the Best Spotting Scopes We invite manufacturers to submit any new spotting scopes introduced from mid-2022 through 2023. Because this particular category of sports optics is expensive to manufacture, and because the market isn’t nearly as dynamic as rifle scopes or binoculars—after all, once you’ve purchased a spotting scope, you’re unlikely to be in the market for another—we test spotters only every two or three years. Low-Light Performance We also measure the low-light performance of each submission by mounting them to tripods and focusing them at 200 yards at a black-and-white resolution target at twilight, all in order to measure the brightness of the glass. The scope that can “see” the longest into the gathering darkness gets top marks. The scope that loses its night-vision earliest gets the lowest score. Scopes in the middle receive scores somewhere between those two poles. How We Score and Grade Optics We break our 10-point scoring into four general categoriesPost: 29 January 17:50
Utah cites hunters for killing wrong animals Every year, multiple hunters are cited for killing the wrong animal in Utah during cow elk season. While many of the incidents end up being more of a case of misidentification than poaching, it is still happening on an annual basis. In fact, several recent investigations conducted by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) found that hunters shot either the wrong sex or wrong species and some are “so excited to see an animal that they make poor shooting decisions,” according to the agency. Here are some recent examples during the 2022-23 antlerless elk hunts, which began in August and runs through Jan. 31: Weber County: A man shot a moose instead of an elk during his hunt. Emery County: A hunter shot a branch-antlered bull elk, thinking it was a spike elk. Then he also shot a spike elk, thinking it was the same elk. He was charged with a misdemeanor. Sevier County: Officers investigated two cases where a hunter shot too many elk. Post: 23 January 11:52
Do Biologists Listen to Hunters? Reality is, wildlife managers listen more than many believe — but hunters have to listen in return, too Although such situations can be frustrating, officials say open dialogue is the key to bridging the gap between hunters and biologists. Butler believes that starts with giving hunters real-world numbers. “Here in Mississippi, we have great deal of data on what real hunters see and hear while in the field based on the observations they record as a part of our Spring Gobbler Hunting Survey,” he said. “Over the past 20 years, hunters in Mississippi hear between one and two gobblers per hunt, on average. Hunts in which more than four gobblers are heard only happen on about six to eight trips out of every 100. Most properties only harvest about one gobbler per 500 acres, on average. These numbers don’t sound eye-popping, but they’ve been pretty consistent through time and should help us all really appreciate those rare days when the woods are on fire andPost: 19 September 18:45
RED DEER The majestic Red Deer is the king of the French forests. An emblematical animal in Europe and mythical through Saint Hubertus’s legend, the hunters’ Patron Saint : the legend says that On Good Friday morning, when the faithful were crowding the churches, Hubert went anyway after deer. As he was chasing a magnificent white stag the animal turned and, as the pious legend narrates, he was astounded at perceiving a crucifix standing between its antlers and he heard God’s voice talking to him. Commonly present on most territories we hunt, be they in forest areas near Paris or in the south of France. Also impressive with a strong and graceful appearance, big male adults weigh up to 250 kilos (550 lbs). The red deer hunt begins early September to the end of February. The mating season usually takes place from mid-September to mid-October, it is then the best chance to see the biggest males and the most interesting trophies French red deer trophies are often splendid and as diversePost: 26 June 00:01
Tips for Nighttime Predator Hunters Ditch the daylight for consistent coyote hunting action Hunting at night can be one of the most effective ways to take coyotes. Like most predators, they tend to be more active after dark, so chances are good that they’ll be up and searching for food while you’re calling to them. Hiding under the cover of darkness makes it much easier to trick a predator’s keen eyesight, too. So what’s stopping you from predator hunting at night? In a lot of places, it’s illegal. But the good news is, more and more states are passing new and expanding existing night hunting regulations. Kentucky opened night hunting a couple years ago, and a bill currently working through the Pennsylvania House would allow hunting with night vision and thermal scopes for part of the year. Since regulations are changing fast, it’s important to do some research so that you know your state’s exact law before you go. What is Big Game Hunting in Africa? Big game hunting refers to the pursuit and killing of large, wild animals, primarily for sport or trophy collection. In Africa, big game hunting typically focuses on the "Big Five" – lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo – along with other species such as kudu, zebra, and various antelope. There's magic in the air. The first frosts of the year greet us each morning, and the tops of the highest peaks are dusted with snow. The colours are changing, and the Yukon's landscape is something to behold. It's moose hunting season, and I'm excited. What you'll see in these images is how tall the buckbrush in the valley is. You will have a few challenges if you want to stand in here and hunt moose. If you're lucky, the brush will make it impossible to see any bulls or cows further than a few hundred yards. Taking a shot? It's almost impossible unless the bull comes in hot to your call. I much prefer getting up on the hillsides around the valley where I can call effectively and glass massive areas. You can see one image of my father with the bull he shot. While we were down in the valley, we found a small hill to shoot from, and it gave use a fantastic shooting angle above the brush.Post: 30 May 09:14

Wisconsin wildlife officials won't seek charges against bow hunter who killed cougar MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin wildlife officials say they won’t seek charges against a bow hunter who killed a cougar. The Department of Natural Resources said in a news release Wednesday that the bow hunter shot the animal in Buffalo County and self-reported the incident to the agency’s violation hotline on Nov. 11. The department said an investigation showed the bow hunter was hunting deer when the hunter encountered the cougar and shot it in self-defense. The department news release does not identify the hunter or the hunter’s gender. Cougar sightings in Wisconsin are rare but have been increasing over the last 20 years. Cougars are native to Wisconsin but were extirpated from the state in the early 1900s. DNR officials say cougars seen in Wisconsin are likely dispersing from established populations in the western United States. Dispersing cougars rarely stay in one location for long and have Post: 17 November 10:00
Post: 31 May 22:22

Setup trail cameras around major summer food sources (more on this below) and on trails to those food sources. Find tips on how to hang trail cameras properly, here. Trail camera pictures are only as useful as you make them. At the most basic level, they tell you if nice bucks are around. But what you’re really trying to figure out is where those nice bucks are heading, where they’re coming from, and where they might be vulnerable. To do that, you’ve got to really read the pictures, not just flip through them. For example, look to see if one of your target bucks is hanging out with a bachelor group of smaller bucks. That way, even if you don’t keep getting photos of the big buck, but capture shots of the smaller bucks, you can still gamble on the big buck’s general whereabouts (some of the wariest bucks are good at avoiding cameras). Years ago I got a trail camera shot of a buck with muddy legs. That told me he probably crossed a nearby swamp before coming out to feed. https://www.yoPost: 16 December 17:06
Big Game Hunting Hunting in Africa Big Game - is for many the very essence of hunting in Africa. Big Game does not just mean big animals, but big challenges and experiences. Technically speaking by far the most hunting in Africa is actually Big Game Hunting. Even many species of antilope are actually classed as big game. However if is first and foremost The Big Five, that one thinks about when the conversation turns to big game hunting. Lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhinoceros have been the great attraction for Big Game hunters travelling to Africa on safari for centuries, and they still are. While it is true that hunting for rhino is perhaps not once what it once was, as today this species is highly protected and surrounded by a great deal of security, the remaining species can still be hunted in the wild African bush - with all the wonderful experiences that this brings with it. Generally speaking it is only in the areas where hunting outfitters operate that the increasing levPost: 5 December 09:30
Goats may help prevent wildfires in California as drought worsens The voracious herbivores are being deployed to clear invasive plants throughout wildlands as another catastrophic fire season looms. For the past six years, Alissa Cope’s California company has contracted out goat herds to various clients who need the animals to chow down on unwanted vegetation and invasive plants. “When we got started it was for habitat restoration, and I just got tired of dumping gallons of herbicide on everything,” says Cope, owner of the Sage Environmental Group, a company that specializes in environmental planning with a natural resource focus. “When goats eat the seed, it goes through their digestive tract, and it becomes nonviable. It doesn't grow after it comes out the other end, which is really amazing.”Post: 8 June 14:18
