WHAT IS HARE HUNTING? Hare hunting involves the pursuing of hares by a pack of harriers, beagles, or bassets with followers either on foot or on horseback. The Association of Masters of Harriers and Beagles lists 71 current hare hunts that are still operating. Similar to the fox hunting season, hare hunting takes place between late August until March. However, whilst fox hunting takes place all over the country, hare hunting tends to be limited to certain areas and this is because hares stay within their territory. Hares spend the entirety of their lives above ground and so during the chase they do not seek safety underground like foxes do. This means they tend to stick to the area that they know and run in loops whilst being pursued by the hounds. Hare hunts can often last up to an hour with hares desperately doing everything they can to escape. Ultimately the hare being hunted will give up from exhaustion and be caught by the faster hounds before it is ripped to pieces.

While I’ve been blessed to travel North America in search of big whitetails, I live and hunt mostly in Kentucky. But, growing up, I didn’t have enough access to let properties soak until gun season. I only had one or two places to go, and I wanted to hunt. I’m more avid about bowhunting than gun hunting anyway. So, it just never made sense to not hunt at the earliest opportunity. Then, in 2015, I started leasing another property, which gave me additional access here at home. Since then, except for a few seasons, the practice has been to leave the property unhunted until rifle season in November. My anecdotal theory is that whitetails will get pressured by neighboring bowhunters, which will push deer onto the lease, ultimately “stacking” deer onto it for gun season. Furthermore, if I or another lease member happen to pressure a mature deer once gun season opens, it’s less likely to vacate the area given that the rut is already in motion. At 78 years of age, cancer has pretty much taken away my ability to climb mountains in search of elk. Don’t feel sorry for me, I have killed plenty of elk, mostly cows for the good eating. The good Lord has allowed me more than a charmed life. Living in Alaska, another part of our efforts to be self-sufficient is living off the land as much as possible. “Filling your freezer” is a common phrase here, and there are a lot of ways to do it. Many of you know there are still a lot of places in the U.S. where we can still do this. We’re blessed to be able to fish in rivers, lakes and the ocean, and hunt for a variety of wild game. We do have a little advantage up here for that, (but we also pay a bit of a price for it). FALLOW DEER With its white-spotted chestnut coat and its shovel-shaped antlers, the Fallow Deer is a magnificent and very good-looking animal. It can mostly be encountered on hunting territories located one to two hours from Paris. It is common to meet and stalk male adults, which can weigh about 120 kilos (260 lbs) and harvest very big trophies. The main hunting method is stalking but driven hunt is also possible on some territories from September to end of February.
