SUMMER PREP EQUALS A BETTER FALL DEER SEASON Don't wait until the season starts. It’s hard to think about frosty mornings at hunting camp this time of the year. The outside temperature for many of us is still hovering around the triple-digit mark, and the air is so thick you could probably squeeze water out of it if you made a fist. But now is exactly when you need to be putting in the work for the upcoming season. UPGRADE YOUR GEAR Think back to last season. Did a fogged scope cost you a big buck? Did your treestand squeak when you tried to get into position for a shot? Did you leave a hunt early or skip going out altogether because of inclement weather? Now is the time to remedy all those problems. Available stock on sporting goods always seems to be in short supply just before season. Don’t wait until the gear you need is sold out before you start shopping. Purchasing early also allows you to get familiar with your new equipment, particularly firearms and optics. Not having to

What Should Every Hunter Have? - A Real Hunter’s Guide to Essential Gear. As someone who’s spent countless dawns in the woods, boots soaked and breath fogging in the cold, I can tell you this: hunting isn’t just about the shot - it’s about preparation. Whether you’re stalking elk in the Rockies, waiting on whitetail in a tree stand, or calling ducks from a blind, the gear you carry can make or break your hunt. So, what should every hunter have? Let me walk you through the essentials - not just the obvious ones, but the real-world tools that seasoned hunters never leave behind. 🎯 1. Weapon of Choice (and the Right Ammo) Let’s start with the obvious. Whether it’s a rifle, shotgun, bow, or crossbow, your weapon must match your game and terrain. But don’t just bring your firearm-bring the right ammunition, and plenty of it. I’ve seen hunts ruined because someone packed the wrong grain or gauge. Pro tip: Always zero your scope before the season starts. A missed shot due to poor sighti

Game licences to kill or take game are not required in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. However, in Scotland, a venison dealer’s licence is still required for those wishing to deal in venison although deer stalkers can sell their venison direct to a venison dealer without the need for a licence. On the Isle of Man a game licence is required in order to shoot game and is available from the Treasury Office. Game is defined as pheasant, partridge, grouse or moor game and hare (brown or common). A game dealer’s licence is also required for those wishing to deal in game. There is no requirement for a game licence on Guernsey but you must hold an appropriate firearm or shotgun certificate. In Jersey there are no game seasons and therefore a game licence is not required.

Scout from Space If you've looked into the night sky, you've noticed the many satellites now orbiting our planet. They're great tools for today's hunter. Google Earth uses satellite images and aerial photography to give bird's-eye views of elk country. Locate meadows, burns, roads, water, heavy-timber escape areas and more. You can even find places where the forest canopy thins to suggest hidden grazing spots for elk. Newer GPS units accept uploaded coordinates from Google Earth, allowing you to walk directly to and more efficiently ground-truth potential honeyholes. 2. RSPB calls for emergency shooting ban during bird flu outbreak This article is more than 2 months old Shoots cause stress for migratory species such as Svalbard barnacle goose, whose numbers are down 38% The RSPB has called for an emergency shooting ban after an “unprecedented” outbreak of bird flu that has left wildfowl populations in “catastrophic decline”. Migratory geese that overwinter on the Solway Firth, which stretches between Scotland and Cumbria, are being hardest hit, with a 38% decline in the Svalbard barnacle goose breeding population from winter last year. While these are protected species and not subject to hunting, experts argue that pressure from wildfowlers on nearby, legal quarry species can have an impact. Shoots nearby can cause stress, scaring the birds into the air where they use up vital energy. Some estimates suggest the UK is facing the worst outbreak of avian influenza on record. Latest population counts of the Svalbard breeding population show a drop in nu

Hunting in Finland Hunting is part of the traditional way of life and living in our northern nature. Finland was originally inhabited in pursuit of game and fish. It continues to be an important form of recreation and a means of getting food. The busiest hunting season starts on August 20, the opening of the water fowl hunting season. The Finnish Wildlife Agency has drafted a guide for foreigners for getting the required permits. In Finland, a hunter must pay the annual Game Management Fee. In addition, hunters must have a hunting permit for the area where they plan to hunt. For some game animals, such as elk, a hunting permit granted by the Finnish Wildlife Agency is required. Game animals may only be hunted in their assigned hunting seasons. Further information is available at The Finnish Wildlife Agency. Permits for hunting are granted by the owner of the land. Pheasant Stocking In PA HARRISBURG, PA -- Saying there is bad news and good news for the future of pheasant hunting, Pennsylvania Game Commission officials have announced that hunters still should expect to see the agency's pheasant stocking efforts increase to 200,000 birds for the 2012-12 license year. However, because of recent flooding impacts at two of the agency's game farms, hunters will notice a significant reduction in pheasant stockings this year. "Prior to the flooding from Tropical Storm Lee, Game Commission game farms were on track to have more than 104,000 ring-necked pheasants for release on public lands throughout the Commonwealth for the upcoming small game hunting seasons," said Carl G. Roe, agency executive director. "Unfortunately, flood waters that wrecked havoc for tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians also destroyed pheasant holding fields at the Loyalsock and Northcentral game farms in Lycoming County. "Initial reports showed about 40,000 birds either perished i

These are one of the most important hunting tips for starters. Stealth and Silence Always be as quiet as you possibly can. Even the faintest twig, branch, clothing and equipment rattling will alert the animals. Dress appropriately, gear up lightly, and don’t use velcro clothing or anything that would make a lot of noise. Navigating Your Surroundings Become acquainted and scout out the hunting area. Depending on which game animals you hunt, it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the perimeter, and use landmarks so you won’t get lost. Patience Goes a Long Way Many hunters don’t have the patience to acquire a clean shot. There’s a lot of waiting, but it pays off in the end when a deer appears on your scope. Persistence is key. Mind Your Scent Animals have heightened senses, and it’s a good idea to become as odorless as possible. There are many chemicals and cosmetic products that mask your scents. That means no smoking, no alcohol, and no smelly food. The wind factor is a

Big Game Hunting Hunting in Africa Big Game - is for many the very essence of hunting in Africa. Big Game does not just mean big animals, but big challenges and experiences. Technically speaking by far the most hunting in Africa is actually Big Game Hunting. Even many species of antilope are actually classed as big game. However if is first and foremost The Big Five, that one thinks about when the conversation turns to big game hunting. Lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhinoceros have been the great attraction for Big Game hunters travelling to Africa on safari for centuries, and they still are. While it is true that hunting for rhino is perhaps not once what it once was, as today this species is highly protected and surrounded by a great deal of security, the remaining species can still be hunted in the wild African bush - with all the wonderful experiences that this brings with it. Generally speaking it is only in the areas where hunting outfitters operate that the increasing lev

Talarik Creek Lodge: Hunting for Trophy Rainbow Trout I answered him that it was not, and he shrugged off the 18-inch Arctic grayling on the end of my line like it was a piece of weed. My wife had sent us fishing that evening to catch some fresh grayling for dinner and our goal was now achieved, with four large, translucent-white-fleshed fish having been plucked from the cold waters of the Newhalen River. The author’s son Lucas with what he calls “a real fish” also defined as any rainbow trout over 20 inches caught on a fly rod. What is it about rainbow trout that incites such excitement? Why is it that when fishing guides congregate around a fire the conversation always finds its way to rainbows, not salmon, not char, not pike, but definitely rainbows? “Keep it in the water,” “Careful, don’t drop it,” and “Nice release,” are all phrases I’ve heard said and spoken myself. I have a personal admiration for the green-speckled creatures, and rainbow trout fishing has a cult following tha

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise at Lake Narach Lake Narach and its surrounding national park are a true haven for birds. Over 230 species have been recorded here, with around 185 nesting in the area. In spring and summer, the region becomes a natural symphony: larks sing overhead, starlings chatter in the trees, and deep in the reeds, the elusive bittern calls with a sound like someone blowing across a bottle. On the lake itself, you might spot coots, great crested grebes, mallards, mute swans, goldeneyes, gulls, and even the rare smew—only about 15–25 pairs nest in all of Belarus! Above the wetlands, cranes and marsh harriers soar, while the forests echo with the tapping of woodpeckers and the songs of tits, chaffinches, and thrushes. Lake Narach isn’t just a scenic retreat—it’s a vibrant home for countless winged residents. Bring your binoculars and a bit of patience, and you might just catch a glimpse of something extraordinary.

New Jersey Bill Would Require Landowners to Notify Neighbors Before Hunting Their Own Land gislators in New Jersey introduced a bill last month that would change the state’s regulations for hunting on private land. Assembly Bill 3732 calls for an expanded safety buffer that would prohibit hunters from nocking an arrow or carrying a loaded weapon within 450 feet of any occupied building in the state. A3732 would also require private landowners in the state to notify neighboring landowners before they could be allowed to hunt on their own land. More specifically, the legislation would require landowners to “provide written notice to and obtain written confirmation from the owners and occupants of adjacent properties [prior to] any hunting activities.” That written notice must include the date, time, and length of the proposed hunt, and it must be delivered to neighboring properties at least 24 hours in advance of any hunting activities. The state’s hunting community opposes the legisla

Blood-thirsty dogs attack defenceless chained bear in ‘shameless baiting station’ A disturbing video of two dogs attacking a chained bear near Moscow, Russia, has sparked fresh calls for President Vladimir Putin to crack down on 'baiting stations' Two blood-thirsty dogs attacked a chained brown bear over the course of several heartbreaking minutes during a hunting training drill. The shocking footage was recorded by animal rights activists in Russia at a suspected “baiting station”. One of the dogs can be seen biting into the bear’s leg from behind. The animal desperately tries to fight back but is held back by its chain. This is despite it being illegal in Russia to use wild-caught animals to train dogs for hunting. The Russian parliament passed a bill in December 2017 to ban baiting but the upper house refused to ratify it. One senator, Sergey Kalashnikov, bizarrely compared it to the extension of LGBT rights in the West.
