Browning Auto-5 (A-5) Shotgun Review: System, Modifications, Calibers, Price, Facts. The Browning Auto-5, often referred to as the A-5, is more than just a shotgun — it’s a piece of firearms history. Designed by the legendary John Moses Browning in 1898 and patented in 1900, the Auto-5 was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun ever produced. With over 2.7 million units manufactured across Belgium, the United States, and Japan, this firearm has earned its place as a favorite among hunters, trap shooters, and collectors alike. 🔧 Design & Operating System A5 The Browning Auto-5 uses a long-recoil operated system, a mechanism where the barrel and bolt recoil together after firing, then separate to eject the spent shell and chamber the next round. This system was revolutionary at the time and remains one of the most reliable semi-auto shotgun actions ever developed. • Action Type: Semi-automatic, long-recoil • Feed System: Tubular magazine (4+1 capacity) • Safety: Crossbolt or tr

Review of the Sauer 202 Elegance in .3006 I recently had the pleasure of taking the Sauer 202 Elegance chambered in .3006 to the range and during a few hunting trips, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this impressive rifle. Build Quality and Design Sauer 202 Elegance First off, the craftsmanship on the Sauer 202 Elegance is truly outstanding. This rifle exemplifies German engineering and quality, with a beautiful finish that makes it a pleasure to handle. One for the Road Pachydermia The fading symbol of Africa To the wide world, the elephant is the symbol of Africa. Hunters might hold out for the lion, and the greater kudu has it advocates, but ask the average person what animal he thinks of when you mention Africa and the answer will almost always be “the elephant.” This fact is important when you consider the coverage given to game conservation generally by the mainstream media. The mountain nyala may be seriously endangered, or the eastern bongo, or giant sable, but mention those to the average journalist—or, more to the point, the average editor—and you will likely get nothing more than a strange look. Every couple of years, The Economist, London’s highly respected international news magazine, remembers the elephant and sends someone to take a look at its status. One expects high quality journalism from The Economist, and usually gets it. Its most recent articles on elephant are broadly excellent, but with one curiou

IT'S NO SECRET that I'm addicted to studying and sharing the rich history of American archery and bowhunting. Today I'm focusing on Roy Case (1888-1986), rightfully known as "The Father of Wisconsin Bowhunting" and the man widely credited with coining the term "bowhunter." He's also recognized as the first-ever licensed archer to tag a deer during any state's firearms season. Archery history was made December 6, 1930, when Case arrowed a spike buck in Vilas County, Wisconsin. At that time, he was shooting a longbow and wood arrows equipped with steel broadheads of his own design -- the Case Kiska hunting head, which he made and sold nationwide between the 1920s and 1950s. He also wrote and published stories about his various archery hunts in "Ye Sylvan Archer" magazine. Also noteworthy is the fact Case worked to establish America's first bow-only deer season in his home state (1934). His work with hunting heads helped establish modern day legal broadhead standards that are still in

5 Snow Goose Stops You’ve Never Tried Chasing spring snow geese is one of the fastest growing pursuits in hunting, and with good reason. The most obvious of its attractions are the tens of millions of birds that string out from Texas to the Canadian tundra and from the coast of California to the Eastern Shore. But as the spring migration has ballooned, so has the hunting competition. Meanwhile, it takes plenty of gear and cash to get into the game: e-callers, massive decoy rigs, pallets of ammunition and gasoline for finding fresh birds for the next day’s flight. You might wonder why we go to the trouble. But if you spend one day under twisting white flocks with 10 shotgun shells in an extension magazine before you run it to the plug again and again, you’ll understand. Arkansas, Missouri and South Dakota are the hotbeds for chasing the reverse migration, but a few places are still devoid of big crowds, no matter if you’re a do-it-yourself or pay-to-play hunter. Scout from Space If you've looked into the night sky, you've noticed the many satellites now orbiting our planet. They're great tools for today's hunter. Google Earth uses satellite images and aerial photography to give bird's-eye views of elk country. Locate meadows, burns, roads, water, heavy-timber escape areas and more. You can even find places where the forest canopy thins to suggest hidden grazing spots for elk. Newer GPS units accept uploaded coordinates from Google Earth, allowing you to walk directly to and more efficiently ground-truth potential honeyholes. 2. Count Points Quickly In good habitat, a bull normally has a 5-point rack as a 2-1/2-year-old and a small 6-point rack the following year. Instantly distinguishi

Lever-action rifles may seem antiquated, but for some folks, they offer a great combination of hunting aptitude and self-defense effectiveness. The X Model from Henry takes their proven action and adds a bit of a tactical flair with synthetic furniture, a short rail at the end of the fore-end, and a threaded muzzle. Muzzle brakes or a suppressor can be easily added, and even for a camp rifle, being able to easily attach a light is a well-thought-out attribute. It’s a short, handy rifle that can be operated quickly and maneuvered well in tight spaces and cycled very quickly. Your caliber selection will depend on your needs. If you’re dealing with lots of bears as well as two-legged threats, the .45-70 will be the way to go. Otherwise, the .357 or .44 mag options offer plenty of power for hunting deer, and offer increased magazine capacity. Not to mention that the increased barrel length will give you better performance than a handgun will, with mild to little recoil. MSRP: $970
