Wild birds can now be killed so there are more game birds to shoot in England Millions of beautiful, colourful pheasants are bred every year for British game farms. They are fattened up so that they’re slow and easy to shoot once the hunting season begins. But there has long been debate over when predators can be shot to protect them. Now, as part of new guidelines, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has included a definition for when these birds are considered livestock. Under guidelines on general shooting licences approved in England on 3 January, gamekeepers will be able to legally shoot crows, magpies and jackdaws to defend pheasants, grouse and partridges. But only when they are “kept in an enclosure or which are free-roaming but remain significantly dependent on the provision of food, water or shelter by a keeper for their survival.”

Crocodile hunting. Egypt, 1870s. Photographer: Henri Bechard Henri Bashar opened a studio in Cairo and sold tourists photographs with views of ancient Egyptian structures. From the 1st millennium BC to the 4th century AD (Roman period), the ancient Egyptians mummified millions of animals, most of the mummies were classified by Egyptologists as ‘votive sacrifices’ to gods and goddesses. Before the construction of the Aswan Dam, Nile crocodiles were found throughout the Nile. Moreover, in ancient times crocodiles were found in Israel, Lebanon and Syria. The ancient Egyptians hunted crocodiles for their mummies, scientists have come to this conclusion. The crocodile, from which the ancient Egyptians made one of the mummies, was not grown in special conditions at the temple. Scientists from France and the United States came to this conclusion after studying the remains using an elementary particle accelerator, the Journal of Archaeological Sciences writes. Game licences to kill or take game are not required in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. However, in Scotland, a venison dealer’s licence is still required for those wishing to deal in venison although deer stalkers can sell their venison direct to a venison dealer without the need for a licence. On the Isle of Man a game licence is required in order to shoot game and is available from the Treasury Office. Game is defined as pheasant, partridge, grouse or moor game and hare (brown or common). A game dealer’s licence is also required for those wishing to deal in game. There is no requirement for a game licence on Guernsey but you must hold an appropriate firearm or shotgun certificate. In Jersey there are no game seasons and therefore a game licence is not required.

The German Wirehaired Pointer: A Hunter's Rugged and Reliable Companion For those of us who live and breathe hunting, the choice of a canine partner is one of the most important decisions we make. We're not looking for a pet; we're looking for a teammate, a specialist, a dog that embodies the spirit of the hunt as much as we do. The German Wirehaired Pointer (GWP) often stands out as a top contender – and for good reason. This isn't a pampered show dog; it's a versatile, tough, and intelligent hunter bred for serious work in the field. What Can a Wirehaired Pointer Hunt? The beauty of the GWP lies in its versatility. They're true multi-purpose dogs. While individual dogs may show a preference for certain game based on their training and experience, a well-bred and trained GWP can excel at: Upland Birds: Pheasant, quail, grouse, woodcock, partridge – the GWP's keen nose, methodical search, and staunch point make it a formidable upland bird dog. Canada goose hunting from kayak. GoPro video. An interesting fact is that of all the subspecies of geese, the Canadian goose flies the worst. This is due to its large weight. That is why the author of the video was in no hurry to get the gun out of the case. Canada geese have been introduced in Europe in the early 17th century by explorer Samuel de Champlain who sent several pairs of geese to France as a present for King Louis XIII. The Canada goose was one of the many species described by Carl Linnaeus in his 18th-century work Systema Naturae. The Canadian goose (Branta canadensis) is a waterfowl from the duck family. It is the most widespread waterfowl in North America: its population exceeds 5 million individuals. The body length of the Canadian goose is 55-110 cm, the wingspan is 120-180 cm, and the weight is 2.0—6.5 kg. The Canadian goose is native to North America. Currently, the bird breeds mainly in Alaska and Canada, including on the Arctic coasts and islands of the Canad

PHEASANT (COMMON) A large, long-tailed game bird. Males have rich chestnut, golden-brown and black markings on body and tail, with a dark green head and red face wattling. Females are mottled with paler brown and black. They were introduced in France long ago and more recent introductions have brought in a variety of races and breeds for sport shooting. Pursuits Across the Plateaus of GAFSA: Hunting Seasons, Laws and Legislation, Demographics of Hunters Geographic Frame and Habitat Diversity in Tunisia Gafsa, located in southwestern Tunisia, is a rugged governorate defined by its semi-arid highlands, rocky plateaus, and narrow wadis that carve through the landscape. Unlike the sandy dunes of the deep south, Gafsa offers a mix of hard ground, sparse shrubbery, and steep elevations that make it a unique, though harsh, terrain for hunting. The mountain ranges such as Djebel Orbata provide shadowed cover and higher vegetation density, supporting a range of game that relies on altitude and seasonal water availability. Though rainfall is limited, it occurs primarily in the winter, giving rise to green pockets that attract animals during critical months. Hunter Distribution and Local Activity of Gafsa Hunting in Gafsa is less commercialized than in coastal areas but remains culturally entrenched, particularly in delegations like El Ksar

Theodore Roosevelt. From hunter to United States president. Theodore Roosevelt was born in 1858. Teddy, as his friends called him, was a frail child, prone to illness, asthma attacks, and physical weakness. Yet, despite his poor health, he was a passionate lover of wildlife. Inspired by the works of James Audubon, William Bartram, and Alexander Wilson, as well as the adventure novels of Mayne Reid about boy hunters and the writings of Frank Forester, as a teenager Theodore became deeply interested in naturalism and decided to dedicate himself to taxidermy. This, of course, did little to help his asthma, so his father insisted he take up outdoor sports. The choice was obvious: Teddy chose hunting. His passion for hunting was remarkable. He took pride in shooting large numbers of birds and other wildlife, collecting impressive trophies—some of which he, as a naturalist, referred to as "specimens." But for Roosevelt, hunting wild animals and collecting their hides and horns was always a

How To Take Better Hunting Photos You’ve just shot a big-game animal. The adrenaline is pumping; you and your buddies are stoked, and then the reality sets in that the work is now upon you to butcher and pack-out the caribou, moose, bear, sheep, deer, goat, elk, bison or musk ox. In the haste to get started butchering, you snap off a few photos, trying to capture the animal and moment, but without forethought, the photos rarely end up capturing the elation and satisfaction of the hunt or the image of the quarry. To prevent that bad news from hitting you when you get home from your next trip and start scrolling through your images to pique the memory, here are some thoughts on how to maximize your photos of the hunt. Pheasant shoots scaled back across UK after bird flu import bans Pheasant shoots across the UK are being shut down or dramatically scaled back this year because of import bans on the birds after an outbreak of bird flu. A huge number of the gamebirds shot in the country are imported from factory farms in Europe. Experts have said this practice should stop or be reduced because it risks spreading disease and has troubling implications for native nature and biodiversity. Just under 50 million pheasants are usually released each year from continental farms. A recent study suggested that at their peak in August each year, non-native common pheasants and red-legged partridges make up about half of all wild bird biomass in Britain. The annual shooting season begins on 1 October. Jeff Knott, the central and eastern England director at the RSPB, said: “The most important thing from our perspective is the bird flu situation underlines the risks of importing and releasing millions of birds i
