Province takes more steps to combat chronic wasting disease The province is taking more actions to prevent the spread of a deadly disease that impacts deer and other wildlife. Chronic wasting disease was first detected in Manitoba last year in five mule deer along the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. CWD is an incurable, fatal disease that also effects elk moose and caribou. And while no additional cases have been detected, the province is expanding what’s called a mandatory sample submission zone, which requires hunters in certain areas to provide samples of their harvested animal for testing. And a strictly regulated and managed mule deer hunting season will be established. Both changes will take place along the western and southern borders of Manitoba. “Additional longer-term measures are needed to prevent any further spread,” said Maria Arlt of the province’s Natural Resources and Northern Development Branch. “If CWD spreads, it can become one of the greatest threats to population

Seeking Sun Amountain lion kills an elk calf in a wooded area of Taos, New Mexico. It happens in a small clearing that leads to one million undeveloped acres of Carson National Forest. That clearing is Garrett Vene Klasen’s front yard and he has a front-row seat for the wildest feast he’s ever witnessed. There’s only one problem. He doesn’t have the right camera. “The right camera would have made a huge difference,” says Garrett Vene Klasen, hunter and New Mexico Wild northern conservation director. “All I had was the camera on my doorbell, which is sad.” The shots from that doorbell camera are low-grade grainy and the audio sounds stuffed with earwax. You can tell what’s going on as long as you’re in range of the home’s Wi-Fi, but the experience is lackluster due to poor resolution and limited capabilities. Bushnell eliminates all that let down with its remote trail camera, CelluCore 20 Solar. “The biggest advantage is it’s real-time information relayed over cellular networks rat

CNW- The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has denied its representatives on the International Whaling Commission (IWC) are assisting with efforts to repeal the whaling ban. Whaling is the process of hunting whales for their usable products such as meat and blubber, which can be turned into a type of oil that became increasingly important in the Industrial Revolution In a statement released yesterday, the government said, “Cabinet has NOT agreed to repeal the moratorium on whale hunting and is unaware of any statement to the contrary.” The government of Antigua and Barbuda issued the statement after international media outlets and marine charities reported that Antigua and Barbuda had proposed the repeal of the moratorium on whaling alongside Japan and several other nations. Marine wildlife protection charity, OceanCare, claimed Antigua and Barbuda and countries which support the lifting of the ban proposed that whales be seen as a food source to secure food and nutritional securit

How Long Will a Benelli Shotgun Last? A Gunsmith’s Perspective on Durability, Round Count & Real-World Longevity When investing in a premium shotgun, longevity is more than a selling point - it’s a promise. And few names carry that promise quite like Benelli. Whether you’re a waterfowler dragging your M2 through flooded timber, a tactical operator relying on the M4, or a clay shooter putting thousands of rounds through a SuperSport, one question inevitably arises: How long will a Benelli shotgun last? Let’s break it down - not with marketing fluff, but with real-world data, mechanical insight, and field-proven experience. 🔧 What Determines Shotgun Longevity? Before we talk numbers, it’s important to understand what affects a shotgun’s lifespan: • Round count (volume of fire) • Maintenance habits • Environmental exposure (saltwater, dust, cold) • Build quality and materials • Design of the action (inertia vs. gas) Benelli’s reputation for durability stems from its inertia-driven

In the 1970s, it was normal for groups of young Europeans to go across the Sahara in old Land Rovers, on adventures that bordered on the reckless. A group of Spanish filmmakers did almost the same, reflecting one of these adventures while they themselves lived one, they left in 10 vehicles, three of which returned, and for three months they lived in tents and cars while they filmed. The film was somewhat successful, and was even the first Spanish film to be shown in China. But for whatever reason it fell into oblivion, no one digitized it, and like other things it faded into history. But its director recovered 25,000 meters of film, re-edited it and is now promoting it again. We have not seen it yet (we will on December 9), but the quality of the photography seems outstanding to us. Over the next few weeks we will publish some exclusive videos of both the final footage and the making of. Top 5 Hunting Towns in America Have You Ever Hunted in These Towns? Man, you hate to rank stuff sometimes. Case in point, college football. What makes one team better than another, anyway — TV time, a difficult schedule, wins and losses? Rankings and choices concerning numero uno lend themselves to loopholes, weak arguments and plenty of opinions. So what exactly qualifies a town as one of the BEST hunting towns in America? To find out, I polled hunters who find themselves in the woods for work and play … biologists, editors and industry folks, and here’s what they said: Every great hunting town needs a variety of game. It has to have cafés, hole-in-the wall restaurants, inexpensive hotels, meat processors, and a game and fish office nearby doesn’t hurt, either. Tons of public hunting land within an hour’s drive. Interesting stuff to see if you tag out early or just get tired of hunting. Albuquerque, New Mexico New Mexico’s scattered peaks are notorious for growing monster bulls. A r

What do modern European hunters wear and what hunting techniques are popular? Rule of thumb is: if you're invited and your party consists of more than 2, leave camo at home or in moderation (ie. only a cap or a mask). While loden and waxed cotton remains popular, modern hunting clothing is made to be comfortable, quiet, sturdy, warm and prefferably tick-proof. As for hunting techniques. -Hunting from a blind is the preferred method. Either low near the ground for birds or in a treestand or elevated blind for larger game. -Driven hunt is a popular second. Takes more people, is more expensive, but very spectacular. The driven hunt comes in many varieties, and is subject to many rules, traditions and rituals which vary by region. -Walking flushing hunt is popular in the wide open agricultural areas as well. Requires good dogs. -Stalking has quite a following as well. Although recently, I've heard a scientist say on a symposium: "95% of the hunters believe they belong to the 5% who can

The Yellowstone Travelers, Wandering an unexpected path. Through the seasons of rain amongst the greens, bright sunshine of warmth, fallen leaves of gold, and darkness housed in cold, they step with heavy hooves of history across a vast forested ecosystem reserved for them; their home and their recovery. Here, even what's for us, remains for them. This protected world stretches for nearly 3,500 square miles across these mountains, an almost entirely untouched wilderness. Below, a short 142 miles of pavement carves a Grand Loop where most of Yellowstone's human visitors can be found. But even these 142 miles belong to the wild residents, and they will often use them as they please. This is, of course, the path of least resistance, and they recognize it as such. Make no mistake, the iconic bison herds of Yellowstone are never forced to use these paved miles. They use them simply because they want to, not because they have to. These are fascinating moments of unique circumstance, and I

How to Stalk a Pronghorn Antelope The heat of the merciless sun pounded the back of my neck as I glassed through the small gap of the lone cedar bush I was crouched behind. His handsomely colored face and long curved black horns seemed to fill the viewfinder as I studied every inch of him. He was a dandy goat, and there was nothing more I wanted to do at that moment than wrap my hands around his black, 16-inch horns. This ground-crawling, torturous stalk began some two hours ago, and needless to say my body ached from the countless gouges, pokes and prods from the seemingly endless supply of needle-sharp plants that inhabit this semi-arid landscape. Although I had whittled the mile down to a mere 110 yards, I could go no farther. It wasn’t because of my lack of sheer will, there was just no cover between me and my bedded prize. I could easily have reached out and touched him with the help of modern ballistics, but I receive no satisfaction from that fact. I wanted to get archery-close

Talarik Creek Lodge: Hunting for Trophy Rainbow Trout I answered him that it was not, and he shrugged off the 18-inch Arctic grayling on the end of my line like it was a piece of weed. My wife had sent us fishing that evening to catch some fresh grayling for dinner and our goal was now achieved, with four large, translucent-white-fleshed fish having been plucked from the cold waters of the Newhalen River. The author’s son Lucas with what he calls “a real fish” also defined as any rainbow trout over 20 inches caught on a fly rod. What is it about rainbow trout that incites such excitement? Why is it that when fishing guides congregate around a fire the conversation always finds its way to rainbows, not salmon, not char, not pike, but definitely rainbows? “Keep it in the water,” “Careful, don’t drop it,” and “Nice release,” are all phrases I’ve heard said and spoken myself. I have a personal admiration for the green-speckled creatures, and rainbow trout fishing has a cult following tha

The 3 Most Expensive Hunts in North America If you’re saving up money for a once-in-a-lifetime dream adventure, why not shoot for the moon? If you had all the money in the world, what would you buy first? Most of us think for a few moments before answering. Some might go for a sports car. Others might tour Europe. How about a beachfront mansion with an elevator, movie theatre, pool, and private chef? But others might spend the money on hunting. Where would you go and what would you hunt for if cost were no obstacle? African elephant? New Zealand red stag? Spanish Ibex? Or, would you stick to North America, where we have more than two dozen big-game hunting opportunities? Some are very affordable and DIY friendly, but others require hunting with a guide and could cost tens of thousands of dollars. Yes, you read that correctly. Since we’re dreaming here, let’s look at the details. Miranda's Take I’ve been fortunate enough to hunt several different species across 16 states, but none

WISCONSIN BOWHUNTER ATTACKED BY BLACK BEAR When you’re hunting from a treestand, the last thing you expect is for a bear to climb up to attack you. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to Wisconsin bowhunter Dalton Roach. The 300-lb black bear, curious as to what Roach was doing up in the tree, climbed up and bit him in the back, KARE reports. “It’s definitely not totally uncommon for a bear to go into a tree with a hunter,” said Roach. “But the fact that he actually started gnawing on me and stuff, like that was a little abnormal.” He initially spotted the bear from his treestand and started recording it; however, “[b]y the time he was under my tree and then up behind me, [it] was 15 total seconds,” said Roach. Fortunately, he realized the situation he was in and didn’t panic despite the fresh puncture wounds and proximity to the bear. “I kind of pulled myself out and then stood around, and turned kinda in one motion to then face the bear and then just started yelling and holle
