What do modern European hunters wear and what hunting techniques are popular? Rule of thumb is: if you're invited and your party consists of more than 2, leave camo at home or in moderation (ie. only a cap or a mask). While loden and waxed cotton remains popular, modern hunting clothing is made to be comfortable, quiet, sturdy, warm and prefferably tick-proof. As for hunting techniques. -Hunting from a blind is the preferred method. Either low near the ground for birds or in a treestand or elevated blind for larger game. -Driven hunt is a popular second. Takes more people, is more expensive, but very spectacular. The driven hunt comes in many varieties, and is subject to many rules, traditions and rituals which vary by region. -Walking flushing hunt is popular in the wide open agricultural areas as well. Requires good dogs. -Stalking has quite a following as well. Although recently, I've heard a scientist say on a symposium: "95% of the hunters believe they belong to the 5% who can

Hunting dog survives 50-foot fall into well, rescued by Texas game wardens Maria, a bird dog, was chasing an injured quail when she went missing. Texas game wardens had to get a bit creative while rescuing a hunting dog name Maria who found herself lost at the bottom of a well in South Texas during a recent hunting trip. According to the game wardens blotter, during the course of the quail hunt on a property in Jim Hogg County, Maria had chased an injured bird through a thicket and didn't return, which worried her owners. They began an immediate search and eventually found her trapped about 50 feet down at the bottom of a well on the property. Game wardens in Jim Hogg County, typically tasked with enforcing the state's hunting and wildlife laws, were quick to arrive and used a makeshift pulley system to lower a kennel to the bottom. Inside the kennel, they placed hunted quail to entice Maria inside, wardens said. After some time, the pup eventually moved into the crate. Maria wa

How often do hunting accidents happen in France? Two people were injured by stray bullets from hunters last week, as head of hunting federation says ‘zero risk’ hunting is not possible. Since 2000, there have been 3,325 hunting accidents in France, of which 421 were fatal, figures from l'Office français de la biodiversité and la Fédération nationale de la chasse show. This is equivalent to 158 accidents per year, with 20 deaths. Since 2000, the number of accidents has gone down 40% and the number of deaths 70%, figures from L’Office français de la biodiversité show. In nine out of 10 of cases, it is hunters themselves who were the victims of accidents, and in 30% of cases, accidents were self-inflicted. Most accidents occurred during big game hunts, such as for wild boar. These figures do not include incidents that have caused injury or death to domestic animals, or instances where bullets have entered homes or cars. There are currently strict rules for hunters, which aim to re

Hour-to-Hour Elk Hunting Tactics. Elk hunting differs from a traditional whitetail hunt in many ways. Elevation, rugged terrain and extraction adversities separate the two, just to name a handful of complicating distinctions. Another difference is the fact elk keep a schedule that offers hunting opportunities throughout the day, whereas whitetails may shut down. Focus on meeting locations that vary by the hour to engage your leggy quarry instead of napping under an old pine tree. 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. If I had to rate one period as the Holy Grail, it would be dawn through midmorning. Elk seem to be anxious, agitated and goal-oriented. That equals noise, and noisy elk are easy to track. The "anxious" issue arises from elk being exposed at sunrise to potential hunting pressure. They are anxious to move to private digs most hunters will be pressed to reach. Herd bulls are anxious to keep the harem together while moving through a barrage of tag-along satellite bulls. What is the goal? By midmo

Review of the Khan Arms Venator 12 ga: A Turkish Semi-Auto Worth Considering (But With Caveats) I've had the Khan Arms Venator in 12 gauge with the 760mm (30") barrel and the extra 610mm (24") rifled slug barrel for a couple of seasons now. Like many, I was drawn to it because it offered a lot of features for the price – a Turkish-made semi-auto, two barrels for versatility (bird shot and slugs), and a decent capacity of 5+1. Let's break it down: The Good Stuff Khan Arms Venator: Value for Money: This is the big one. You get a semi-auto action, two barrels, and a set of chokes for significantly less than a Beretta or Benelli. If you're on a budget and want a versatile shotgun, the Venator is definitely in the conversation. Versatility: The two-barrel setup is fantastic. The 30" barrel with chokes is great for upland birds, waterfowl, and even some clays. The 24" rifled slug barrel turns it into a capable deer gun. Being able to switch between them quickly is a real plus. Reliable

Buck Holes Search for what I call buck holes, which are tangles of honeysuckle or wild rose on ridges, cedar or pine thickets, brushy beaver swamps … you get the idea. A buck hole doesn’t have to be large or even remote — just a thick spot other hunters overlook. A grassy ditch near a back road, an overgrown hog lot behind an old barn or a similar neglected spot can hide a big buck. Scour an aerial map for such pockets or strips of cover. Check the edges of a thicket or swamp for trails pocked with big tracks. Look for rubs and late scrapes, which are signs that a buck has moved back in there to evade hunters and breed a last willing doe. When you find a mother lode of fresh sign, stop right there. You don’t want to bust into a small security area, put more heat on already wired deer and bust them out of there. It’s better to back off 100 yards or so and set up on a ridge or point where you can cover buck entry and exit routes into and out of cover.

How to Can Deer Meat Tools and Ingredients: Pressure canner Quart jars, rings, and lids Venison Garlic Non-iodized salt Black pepper Directions: Trim up meat so that the majority of fat and tendons are removed. Cube the meat into pieces that are about the size of a golf ball. “Cold pack” the raw meat into the quart jar, leaving about 1 inch of headspace. Use a spoon to tightly pack in the meat. Don’t add any liquid, as the meat will create natural juices during the canning process. Put 1 teaspoon of non-iodized salt, ¼ teaspoon of black pepper, and two cloves of garlic on top of the meat. Adding a few slices of green pepper or onion is optional, and note that a little bit of flavor while canning will go a long way. Place on lid and screw on ring. Put your jars in the canner. Follow the directions that are specific to your pressure canner, which will suggest something like adding three quarts of water, and canning for 90 minutes at 15 pounds of pressure. It’s important that you know you

Why We Hunt - An Ancient Activity Hunting is an ancient human activity. As such it means experiencing an original way of life in unspoiled nature. Hunting can be the purest form of eco-tourism. And yes, of course we enjoy hunting. Of course we enjoy the thrill of a stalk. Yes, of course we enjoy the adrenalin rush when facing a wild un-collared lion. There is nothing wrong with that, these are inherent components of our own nature. City people seem to have forgotten that man can and should be part of nature. And above all, the laws of hunter and hunted are the very foundation on which nature rests. If we still want nature – and that is the principle decision mankind has to take – we have to understand and accept it as it is; and true, honest hunting is the very school of life.... But we don’t enjoy killing. We have to kill to have hunted. And when at times we have to kill, we try to do so clean and quick and painless. At the same time death is part of life – it is not always easy
