The guide staff at the Flying B Ranch toyed with the idea of a wingshooting guide school for several years before launching the inaugural program in 2019. Such training had existed for some time in the fishing and big-game disciplines, but the unique skills required by bird guides were generally learned and refined on the job. The staff at the Flying B saw an opportunity to streamline the learning process and leverage the intellectual property they’d accumulated over decades. JAGD ÖSTERREICH JÖ brand is about how centuries-old hunting tradition meets modernity. Hunting in Austria dates back to medieval times, with royal families like the Habsburgs playing a pivotal role in shaping the country’s hunting heritage. JAGD ÖSTERREICH continues this legacy while integrating modern conservation practices and sustainable management techniques. The nine Austrian hunting associations are strengthening their transnational cooperation. As a basis for this, they have developed the umbrella brand "Jagd Österreich". By uniting these associations under the JAGD ÖSTERREICH brand, Austria aims to strengthen its hunting community, enhance collaboration between regions, and promote responsible hunting as a key component of wildlife conservation and rural development. Austrian hunting associations united under umbrella brand “JAGD ÖSTERREICH”: 1. Bundesjägerkammer Österreich (Federal Hunters' Chamber of Austria). Wissen Sie?

A Night in Hippo Heaven By Donald J Stoner It is said that hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal (if you exclude mosquitos). But does that qualify them to be classified as dangerous game. I have certainly had my doubts until, that is, an experience I had one night in a farmer’s field. There is no question that an animal that weighs two tons, can run up to 20 mph and has huge teeth, has the potential of being dangerous. The danger is highest if you happen to catch a hippo on the land. Water is their preferred environment and they seem less threatened there. I don’t think any predator will attack a full-grown hippo in the water, although a big croc will certainly snatch a small hippo given half a chance. On the other hand, lion, especially a large pride, will attack a hippo if they catch it on land. This may have something to do with hippo temperament when they are away from water. Threaten a hippo on land, and it will head straight for the nearest water an

New York Hunter Gets a Second Chance on This 180-Inch Buck “I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back” eremy Williams likes to hunt his family’s 500-acre parcel near the Susquehanna River in south-central New York. He goes down to the river often, and last summer he spotted a giant buck near the bank while catfishing. Williams watched where the deer bedded, and then came back to place trail cams in the area. By October, he’d learned the buck’s habits well enough to make his move. “He was only 20 yards away from me on Oct. 10,” Williams tells Outdoor Life. “But I was shaking so bad I missed him clean, sending my arrow three feet over his back.” Eager to redeem himself this season, Williams kept an eye on his trail cams and he kept getting photos of the buck. A few other hunters in the area had spotted the buck, too. But he wasn’t an easy deer to pattern. “I’d been bowhunting him on [our] family’s land in low, thick areas because I believed th

THE WOLF OF MY DREAMS!!!… The challenges of wolf hunting- you sit there staring into space, in a fog, your mind goes numb, for who knows how long… then all of a sudden, it happens. And when you spot a wolf, or a pack of wolves, your emotions REDLINE!!! You go from a lethargic daze to gasping for air… IT’S WILD!!! Let me tell you the story of this wolf… My friend Mark McKay, Richy and I were climbing in our blind at daybreak. I was sliding my feet into the bottom of my Heater Body Suit and just about to zip it up when I heard someone say, “WOLVES!!!” Remember the emotions I was telling you about. 🤯🤯🤯… Mark scooted into the blind and informed us he had just seen the whole pack, and they were coming our way! I quietly racked a shell in my Browning 7mm, and gave myself a pep talk about gathering my “chickens!” Eight wolves came into sight!!! They were about 170 yards away down over the ledge of a beaver dam. They held up just barely in a small shooting lane. That’s when I noti

DIY Moose Hunt in Icy Bay For the last three minutes, “Young Guns” has been on a beeline to my cow call. My loud calls, bolstered by the use of Wayne Kubat’s “Bull Magnet,” which is essentially a fiberglass megaphone that allows me to amplify both cow calls and bull grunts, has drawn in this big bull from far away. At first, far in the distance, I could hear the faint vocalizations of a bull drawn to a cow. The rhythmic “Ooh-Waa” sounds are repeated by the bull every few seconds. Finally, at about 400 yards across the swamp, I get a visual on the bull as he milled around. At first it appears that the bull is going to head off in another direction, but my persistent calling has him coming on a string. The topography of the location makes it so I won’t be able to get a shot until he comes clear of the brush that separates us, which will put him broadside at 20 yards. I experience a full adrenaline rush after so much communication with this bull, and have enough time to calm down my hear

Find a Deadhead Buck? Keep it Legal To you thousands of COVID-19 newbies that have joined our ranks to hunt deer in the fall and shed antlers in the spring, here is something you’ll find interesting. A “deadhead” is the commonly used term for a buck deer carcass that you might stumble across in the woods, with antlers still attached to the skull. Generally, such a buck has been dead for several months or even a year or two, and the carcass has been ravaged by time, weather, and predators. All that might remain are a grisly skull with antlers, a portion of the spine, and maybe some rib bones wrapped tautly with pieces of hide as black as used motor oil. If the skull has been lying on the ground for more than a few months, you might see teeth marks on the antlers where squirrels and mice have gnawed them. Rodents are attracted to the minerals in antlers, and they also chew them to wear down their ever-growing teeth. The longer a deadhead rots on the ground, the more squirrels will carve

Choose the Best Knife for Deer Hunting Should you go with a fixed-blade or a folder? A lifelong deer hunter weighs in with his preferences You can gut and skin a buck with a penknife or a Bowie or any blade in between, but to do the job right, select a tool designed with the deer hunter in mind. Fixed Blade with Gut-Hook If you haven’t tried a fixed-blade knife with a gut-hook, you should. Roll a buck onto his back and use the knife point to make a small incision in the white hair and abdominal wall of the lower belly. Turn the knife over, insert the sharp hook into the slit and zipper the animal open up to the sternum. With a hook, there’s no exposed steel tip to pierce a deer’s paunch and make a mess, or clip your finger. These days it’s vital that you stay knick-free. A Michigan hunter recently was infected with bovine tuberculosis after he sliced his hand while dressing a buck, and there are other deer diseases out there. Be careful and wear rubber gloves. Once you’ve finished the

The best ways to keep your pets cool this summer A lot of us are excited about the warmer temperatures, which means more time outside with our furry friends. Experts say to keep our pets safe from the heat, walk your dog early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. Limit their time outside when it’s especially hot out and keep them hydrated. Never leave your dog inside the car, even if you have a quick trip inside a store. A car can heat up quickly in just a few minutes. We have shoes to protect our feet but our pets don’t have that option, so don’t walk them on the hot pavement which can badly burn their paws. Instead, walk in grassy areas. If they are overheated, cool them off underneath their armpits, chest, and ears. If they will drink water, give them lukewarm, not ice-cold water because you don’t want to shock their system and get them to a vet as soon as possible. If it’s just simply too hot for those walks, there are plenty of ways to giv
