From My Blind to Yours: How I Choose Shotgun Shells for Hunting I’ve been hunting since I was old enough to carry a shotgun, and if there’s one lesson I’ve learned the hard way, it’s this: the wrong shell can cost you the shot of a lifetime. Whether you’re after birds or big game, knowing your ammo matters. This isn’t theory — it’s what I’ve figured out over seasons of trial, error, and a few missed opportunities. --- 🎯 First Things First: Understand Your Shell Every shotgun shell has three parts: • Casing — holds everything together • Primer — ignites the powder • Payload — either birdshot (multiple pellets), buckshot (larger pellets), or a slug (single projectile) You also need to match your shell to your shotgun’s gauge and chamber length. Over 300 miles of fencing removed to benefit Nevada antelope For the past decade, volunteers have worked to remove one of the major impediments facing antelope along the western landscape: barbed-wire fencing. And, in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, over 300 miles of fence has been removed, resulting in about 1,000 square miles of fence-free habitat for the roughly 2,000 antelope in northern Nevada, according to the Nevada Independent. The refuge was established in 1931 with the purchase of over 34,000 acres of the Last Chance Ranch by the Audubon Society and Boone & Crockett Club. Five years later, another 540,000 adjacent acres were combined with the initial 34,000, creating the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, which provides key habitat for antelope. Antelope are considered important indicators of ecosystem health due to their “migratory habits and far-reaching range,” according to the Nevada Independent. To early humans, hunting was a necessity. The quarry provided not only food from the meat but also clothing from the skins, as well as material for tools from the bones, horns, and hooves. Both archaeological evidence from the past and observation of simpler societies of the present show widespread preoccupation with, and ingenuity in, methods of hunting. These varied, and vary, with the nature of the terrain, the animal hunted, the ingenuity and inventiveness of the hunters, and the materials and technologies at their disposal. Weapons ranged upward in intricacy and effectiveness from sticks and stones used to kill birds and small game to specially shaped clubs and throwing sticks such as the African knobkerry, the trombash of the Upper Nile, and the Australian boomerang; to spears ranging from simple pointed sticks to those with a separate foreshaft, usually barbed, and armed with heads of sharpened stone, bone, or metal. Five o’clock with polar bear. If you decide to drink tea with cookies in the North of Russia, do not forget to treat the polar bear. The number of polar bears is declining worldwide. Almost everywhere this species is under protection, any prey of the beast is prohibited. There are approximately 25-30 thousand individuals left on the entire planet. A significant part of them live in the Russian north. In the Russian Federation, it lives on the Arctic coast and islands in the waters from the Barents to the Chukchi and Bering Seas. The Chukchi polar bear population is considered to be the largest in the world. On floating ice, polar bears can reach more southern latitudes, for example, they can reach the center of the eastern coast of Kamchatka. In Russia, polar bears are listed in the Red Book, and their hunting has been prohibited since 1956. Despite this, experts estimate that 100-200 bears fall victim to poachers every year. Poaching of polar bears in Russia is strictly punishable

Lever-action rifles may seem antiquated, but for some folks, they offer a great combination of hunting aptitude and self-defense effectiveness. The X Model from Henry takes their proven action and adds a bit of a tactical flair with synthetic furniture, a short rail at the end of the fore-end, and a threaded muzzle. Muzzle brakes or a suppressor can be easily added, and even for a camp rifle, being able to easily attach a light is a well-thought-out attribute. It’s a short, handy rifle that can be operated quickly and maneuvered well in tight spaces and cycled very quickly. Your caliber selection will depend on your needs. If you’re dealing with lots of bears as well as two-legged threats, the .45-70 will be the way to go. Otherwise, the .357 or .44 mag options offer plenty of power for hunting deer, and offer increased magazine capacity. Not to mention that the increased barrel length will give you better performance than a handgun will, with mild to little recoil. MSRP: $970

25 Tips for Dove Hunters 1. Pick the Right Gun Dove hunting is supposed to be fun, and if you enjoy shooting family heirlooms or featherlight .410s at doves, who am I to tell you not to? But if your idea of fun is hitting more doves, choose a 12- or 20-gauge with some heft and at least a 28-inch barrel. A longer, heavier gun swings smoothly, points surely and soaks up recoil. The best dove shooting I did this past year was with a 12-gauge sporting clays gun. 2. Stock Up On Shells Ammunition is available again, and there’s no reason to run out opening day, which I have actually done. Begging shells from people in the field is just embarrassing. Field or target loads of Nos. 7½ or 8 lead or 6 or 7 steel work. Steel loads kill fine, by the way. Lighter loads, with less shot and lower velocities, kick a lot less than heavy, high-speed stuff, and you will shoot a lot in no more padding than a T-shirt. Be sure your ammo will cycle your semi-auto, but other than that, lighter is better. 3.

The Right Way to Clean and Store Your Hunting Rifle Properly caring for your deer gun’s barrel and action ensures it’ll be ready to go again next fall Deer season is over, and now is the perfect time to give your rifle a thorough annual cleaning. Store your gun in a secure and rust-free environment and it will be in good working order when you break it out for a range session in a few months. Gun-Cleaning Gear To do the job right, you need to secure your rifle horizontally in a vise. A vise attached to a workbench at your house will work fine. Or you can purchase a portable gun vise from a company that specializes in firearms-cleaning accessories. Spend $40 or more for a universal gun-cleaning kit, which will include a three-piece bore rod and an assortment of jags, brushes, patches, and other accessories for cleaning not only your bolt-action, but also other handguns and long guns that you own. Also, and this is important, purchase a bore guide, which will protect the bore and action
