This nocturnal predator is widely distributed throughout the country, from the European part of Russia to Siberia and the Far East. It prefers deep, slow-moving waters with muddy or sandy bottoms, making it particularly well-suited to the vast network of lakes and rivers found in Russia's diverse landscapes.
In many parts of Russia, burbot holds cultural significance as both a source of sustenance and a symbol of resilience against harsh conditions. Its firm white flesh is prized for its flavor and versatility, whether smoked, fried, or made into soup. Physical Description:
Appearance: Burbot have an elongated, eel-like body with a single long dorsal fin that stretches from just behind the head to the tail. They have a barbel (whisker-like sensory organ) on their chin. The coloration varies from light to dark brown with mottling and blotches that provide camouflage in their habitat.
Size: They can grow quite large, with adults typically ranging from 12 to 30 inches in length, although specimens over 3 feet have been recorded.
Habitat:
Range: Burbot are found in freshwater bodies across northern regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. In North America, they are especially prevalent in the Great Lakes and surrounding watersheds, as well as in rivers and lakes throughout Canada and the n
Gold caviar for Russian Tsar.
Pike caviar, once a rare and exclusive delicacy reserved for Russian Tsars, is steeped in history and intrigue. In the past, catching pike under the ice was an arduous and challenging task without modern equipment, making its caviar all the more precious. The skill and effort required to harvest this elusive fish during winter meant that only the most experienced fishermen could procure it, and even then, yields were limited. As a result, pike caviar became a symbol of luxury and privilege, gracing the tables of royalty and high society.
Its unique flavor—mild yet distinct, with a hint of sweetness and crunch—made it a favorite among Russian nobility. Served on crisp bread or paired with rich creams, it was considered a true gourmet experience. Today, while easier to obtain, pike caviar still carries echoes of its regal past, offering a taste of history with every bite. It remains a testament to the resourcefulness of traditional fishing practices and con

Ballerina Maya Plisetskaya fishing on the banks of the Moskva River,
1956.
Maya Plisetskaya, one of the greatest ballerinas of the 20th century, danced her part in Swan Lake more than 800 times, appearing on stage in this role for 30 years — from 1947 to 1977.
In the late 1970s, she headed the Ballet of the Roman Opera and the Spanish ballet company Teatro Lirico Nacional. She has worked with the most prominent choreographers in the world, dancing on all the best ballet stages without exception.
For many famous artists, Plisetskaya was a muse. Her grace and beauty inspired Chagall, Petit, Bejar, Cardin.
Journalists often pestered her with the question of how she manages to keep her figure for many years. She answered: "No dieting, you need to eat less." Or she'd tell a favorite joke for a change. Future ballerinas and girly girls flock to her, chirping, asking for an autograph. One, bolder, asks the question: "Tell me, how do you manage to stay in this shape?" Plisetskaya teaches:
The 5 Best Thermal Monoculars of 2024
Everybody wants to know what goes bump in the night, even if it doesn’t bump and even if it’s not nighttime. Happily, thermal monoculars, a new and energetic category of gear, often identify what used to be invisible. They can help you see everything from human intruders on the other side of a fence, to coyotes and raccoons crouching in the dark, to a problematic wire in a household electrical outlet.
We’re talking about monoculars, rangefinders, and cameras that use temperature variations, rather than visible light, to form images that can be captured as photographs or videos, or simply delivered to your eye to answer that ancient question: what’s out there?
I’ve used this new class of “optics” over the past year to find newborn calves in a deadly blizzard, to find my ice-fishing buddies in the fog, to detect hidden electrical problems that might burn my house down, to hunt coyotes at midnight, and to finally even the odds on crop-raiding feral

At 78 years of age, cancer has pretty much taken away my ability to climb mountains in search of elk. Don’t feel sorry for me, I have killed plenty of elk, mostly cows for the good eating. The good Lord has allowed me more than a charmed life. I have a wonderful family with great kids, grandkids and great grandkids and I have fly fished (my main sport) all over the world, sometimes in places I never dreamed I would go.
My youngest son, Stefan, and I decided to do something we had never done before. We planned to go on a guided elk hunt. I work for the International Sportsmen’s Expositions telling fly-fishing tales and doing fly tying demonstrations. In my spare time I began to canvas the floor, down in Denver, looking for a suitable elk-hunting outfit. QRS Outfitters out of Meeker, Colo., was particularly attractive, and they thought an early season muzzleloader hunt would fit the bill for what we were looking for, so we booked our hunt.
Neither of us has owned a muzzleloader, nor ha
