How to Call in a Bull Elk Like a Calling Champion
Do You Use These Techniques?
You might expect a top elk caller to focus his hunting advice on proper call selection, volume, tone, timing or teamwork. But one Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation World Elk Calling Championship winner says perhaps the most critical step to calling in elk is how you set up to intercept an approaching bull.
Corey Jacobsen of Boise, Idaho, is one of the most decorated world champion elk callers in the country, as well as a consistently successful bowhunter.
Jacobsen offers the following key advice on calling elk into bow range:
“The setup might be the most critical step," Jacobsen said. "It always plays a major role in determining the outcome of a hunt. I can’t count how many hunts have been blown by a bad setup — too much brush to shoot through, not enough cover to hide in, no shooting lanes, inconsistent wind currents, caught in the open, the list goes on and on.
“I always repeat one word to myself when I’m s

The Yellowstone Travelers,
Wandering an unexpected path.
Through the seasons of rain amongst the greens, bright sunshine of warmth, fallen leaves of gold, and darkness housed in cold, they step with heavy hooves of history across a vast forested ecosystem reserved for them; their home and their recovery. Here, even what's for us, remains for them.
This protected world stretches for nearly 3,500 square miles across these mountains, an almost entirely untouched wilderness. Below, a short 142 miles of pavement carves a Grand Loop where most of Yellowstone's human visitors can be found. But even these 142 miles belong to the wild residents, and they will often use them as they please.
This is, of course, the path of least resistance, and they recognize it as such. Make no mistake, the iconic bison herds of Yellowstone are never forced to use these paved miles. They use them simply because they want to, not because they have to. These are fascinating moments of unique circumstance, and I

SHCHI – Russian Sauerkraut soup with wild meat and porcini mushrooms.
This traditional Russian recipe, like many other recipes of Russian cuisine, may seem very strange. But believe me, Russians know a lot about winter warming soups. It just needs to be tried! This strange combination of seemingly incompatible ingredients creates the uniqueness of Russian cuisine, which is replete with nutritious and vitamin-rich dishes in the cold season.
I got this unusual version of the traditional Russian soup as a result of an experiment that exceeded all expectations. I decided to add wild roe deer meat and porcini mushrooms to the classic cabbage soup recipe, which gave the dish a special tenderness and rich taste and make it a real hunting recipe.
Russian sour cabbage soup, or SHCHI, that I prepared using wild roe deer meat hunted in Belarus, is a unique interpretation of this classic dish. To enhance the flavors, I added cranberries from the Nalibokskaya Pushcha, known for their vibrant ta
Wild hare hunting Morocco: A Hunter’s Tale from the Wild Plains
I still remember the morning air—cool, dry, and laced with the scent of wild thyme. The sun hadn’t yet crested the horizon when we set out across the scrublands near Benslimane, rifles slung, dogs eager, and hearts pounding. Hare hunting in Morocco isn’t just a sport—it’s a ritual, a test of patience, instinct, and respect for the land.

🐇 The Moroccan Hare: Elusive and Legendary
The North African hare (Lepus capensis) is a master of deception. Unlike rabbits, hares don’t burrow—they rely on camouflage and speed. Their lean bodies and powerful hind legs make them lightning-fast across rocky terrain. In Morocco, they’re most active at dawn and dusk, preferring solitude and silence. Locals say, “If the hare ran straight, no man could catch it.” And they’re right.
These hares thrive in grasslands, vineyards, cork oak forests, and even semi-arid zones. They’re solitary, nocturnal, and notoriously clever. You won’t fin
🇺🇸 An epic hunt that gave us the opportunity to explore some incredible and untouched areas, where we found not only plenty of Marals, but an adventure like no other. Not every day one gets the privilege of hunting on these beautiful mountains surrounded by wolves, bears, ibex, and wild boars amongst other creatures. This majestic and huge bull was spotted on our first hunting day, and from that moment we knew he was the one we wanted, which somehow, made our adventure even more special. Trophy aside, the way this Maral patrolled his area was a clear sign of dominance and no other bull dared to confront him during the 3 days we tried to cut distance with him. Regarding the trophy, the weight of the antlers -despite having to wait for the skull to dry out completely, where the expected weight loss could be up to 2 kg- proves this will clearly be the biggest Maral harvested in the area this year. Luck is an important factor, but without attitude and resilience, none of this would have
