Hunting is an exciting outdoor activity, but safety must always come first. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or new to the sport, following key safety measures is critical for an enjoyable experience. Here are some essential safety tips that every hunter should know: 1. Wear the Right Hunting Gear Always wear proper #huntinggear, especially blaze orange clothing to remain visible to other hunters. Protect yourself from the elements with appropriate #huntingclothing, and if you’re hunting from a tree stand, don’t forget your #safetyharness. 2. Be Sure of Your Target and What’s Beyond It One of the golden rules of #huntersafety is knowing your target and what lies beyond it. Whether you're using a bow, rifle, or shotgun, this practice is crucial to avoid accidents. Safe #firearmshandling means keeping your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire. 3. How can a young lady protect you in case of a polar bear attack? The photos shows KLM flight attendant Joanna Van Duffelen, with a Fairchild Armalite AR–10 combat rifle, dressed in Arctic clothing. Photo 1959. The work of flight attendants and stewards begins long before the departure of the aircraft and does not end immediately after landing. The main thing in this job is not food and drinks, but the safety of passengers in any critical situation. In 1958, KLM launched transarctic flights from Amsterdam to Tokyo with refueling in Anchorage. It was the era of motor aircraft at the dawn of mass passenger aviation. The company paid special attention to the risk of an emergency landing in the Arctic. Each plane carried a set of survival equipment. As you can see, KLM Dutch Airlines flight attendant Joanna is ready for the rigors of life in the Arctic. Ms. Van Duffelen is wearing Arctic survival gear aboard every KLM plane flying the polar route from Amsterdam to Tokyo. The set cons

Last weekend, I embarked on an unforgettable hunting trip in the heart of California’s wilderness. The journey began at the crack of dawn, with the sun casting a golden hue over the sprawling landscapes of the San Bernardino National Forest. Armed with my gear and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore the rugged terrain. The forest was alive with the sounds of nature, from the rustling leaves to the distant calls of wildlife. As I trekked deeper into the woods, I encountered a variety of game, including black bears and wild pigs. The thrill of the hunt was palpable, and every moment was a testament to the beauty and challenge of the great outdoors. One of the highlights of the trip was spotting a majestic mule deer. With careful precision and respect for the animal, I took my shot. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating, reminding me of the importance of conservation and responsible hunting practices. After a successful day in the field, I set up camp under the starlit

Hunting With Dogs: Training & Safety Tips Hunting with your dog is an exhilarating way to experience outdoor life with your furred friend. Dogs have been hunting with humans for millennia. Many hunting breeds were actually developed specifically to find, flush out, or retrieve game. But that doesn’t mean that your dog will automatically know what to do on a hunt. Before you head out in search of game with your canine companion, you’ll need to train your dog. Aside from helping you find and retrieve the quarry you’re after, dogs also must become used to loud sounds like gunshots. You’ll also need to bring along the proper hunting gear necessary to keep your dog safe and satisfied in the field. Get Your Dog Used To Gunshots Gunshots are loud and can spook your dog into running off in the middle of a hunt. That’s why gun training is so important. Cara Harper is an expert in the field who regularly hunts with her Labrador Retrievers, Nita and Rou. Harper and her husband trained their pu

These are one of the most important hunting tips for starters. Stealth and Silence Always be as quiet as you possibly can. Even the faintest twig, branch, clothing and equipment rattling will alert the animals. Dress appropriately, gear up lightly, and don’t use velcro clothing or anything that would make a lot of noise. Navigating Your Surroundings Become acquainted and scout out the hunting area. Depending on which game animals you hunt, it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the perimeter, and use landmarks so you won’t get lost. Patience Goes a Long Way Many hunters don’t have the patience to acquire a clean shot. There’s a lot of waiting, but it pays off in the end when a deer appears on your scope. Persistence is key. Mind Your Scent Animals have heightened senses, and it’s a good idea to become as odorless as possible. There are many chemicals and cosmetic products that mask your scents. That means no smoking, no alcohol, and no smelly food. The wind factor is a

The 5 Best Thermal Monoculars of 2024 Everybody wants to know what goes bump in the night, even if it doesn’t bump and even if it’s not nighttime. Happily, thermal monoculars, a new and energetic category of gear, often identify what used to be invisible. They can help you see everything from human intruders on the other side of a fence, to coyotes and raccoons crouching in the dark, to a problematic wire in a household electrical outlet. We’re talking about monoculars, rangefinders, and cameras that use temperature variations, rather than visible light, to form images that can be captured as photographs or videos, or simply delivered to your eye to answer that ancient question: what’s out there? I’ve used this new class of “optics” over the past year to find newborn calves in a deadly blizzard, to find my ice-fishing buddies in the fog, to detect hidden electrical problems that might burn my house down, to hunt coyotes at midnight, and to finally even the odds on crop-raiding feral

By Frank Gentile, Hopewell, N.Y. It was October 2011, and I was back in my Chevy Tahoe on my way to another hunt. This time, instead of my son, I was traveling with my hunting buddies. My buddies and I had been on plenty of trips together before but never to Texas! Between the four of us and gear for six (two of our team opted to fly from New York to San Antonio), every single spare inch of space in the truck had been utilized. With each of us taking turns driving, we made it to Texas in about 20 hours. We got dinner and hotel rooms in Texarkana, and were back on the road early the next morning. With a day to spare before we were due at our hunting camp in Hondo, Texas, we headed south with plans to enjoy the city of San Antonio along the way. In San Antonio, we explored the Alamo, the River Walk and the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum. What a great city! Our first order of business after arriving at the camp the next morning was to make sure that our rifles were on target.

Stylish Home Interiors Featuring Hunting Trophies: Bears, Foxes, Deer, and Iconic African Wildlife Transforming your home into a stylish haven can take on a unique twist when you incorporate hunting trophies. Character pieces like bears, foxes, deer, and famous African animals can add a striking visual element while paying homage to nature and the art of wildlife conservation. First, consider the placement of your trophies. A grand bear mount above a stone fireplace can create a bold centerpiece, making the living room feel both rustic and luxurious. Surround it with a palette of warm browns, deep greens, and soft neutrals to enhance the natural aesthetic. You might also think about introducing a variety of textures through rustic wooden furniture and soft fabrics, like leather or wool, to create a cozy atmosphere. In a more eclectic setting, fox mounts can add a whimsical touch. Their playful nature can shine through when displayed alongside vintage hunting gear or framed wildlife

Will Brantley and Mike Hanback talk long-range glassing, big bucks in Indiana, and pre-season plans in the Realtree Outpost podcast It's late August and still hot, but there's hope in the air, too. Kentucky's squirrel season opened this past weekend, and Tennessee's early three-day "velvet" archery season opened today. With luck, I'll be in a treestand this weekend. We're right on the eve of one of the best times of year, and there's no better time to debut Season 3 of Realtree's Outpost Podcast. This week, I joined fellow blogger and Big Deer TV host Mike Hanback to discuss a variety of pre-season topics. We covered long-range glassing tactics (as detailed here), and discussed why they're still so effective, especially in the early season, and even more so than trail cameras. We discussed plans for this fall, strategies for hunting the drought-stricken West, and personal goals for another season. Then we shifted gears to talk about Josh Honeycutt's recent (and fascinating) story on

Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56 scope Review As an avid hunter and shooting enthusiast, I have had the opportunity to test a variety of rifle scopes, and the Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56 has made a significant impression on me. This scope is often lauded for its exceptional optical performance, rugged design, and user-friendly features, and after extensive use, I can vouch for its reliability and quality. Optical Performance: The standout feature of the Zeiss Conquest 3-12x56 is undoubtedly its optical clarity. The 56mm objective lens allows for a remarkable amount of light to enter the scope, which is particularly beneficial during low-light conditions, such as dawn and dusk. The transmission of light is truly impressive, yielding bright, crisp images that enhance target acquisition and identification. I found that even in challenging lighting scenarios, the scope provided a clear sight picture, enabling me to make accurate shots. The zoom range of 3-12x offers a great deal of versatility, maki

Michigan weighs potential wolf hunting season If wolves are delisted, should Michigan hold a hunting season? This question is currently making the rounds in the Mitten State as the Michigan Natural Resources Commission (MNRC) determines whether or not that will occur if the state’s largest predator is removed from the federal endangered species list, according to The Detroit News. With annual tallies between 600 and 700, wolves are thriving in the Upper Peninsula and Michigan officials say that “the state’s wolf population has stayed stable for the past 12 years.” However, whether the state would hold a wolf hunting season continues to be a divided topic – one that invokes those passionate for a season and those who are strongly against one. “People don’t like wolves,” said Brian Roell, a Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist. “Unlike any other wildlife we deal with, it’s a love-or-hate relationship for most folks.” Supporters of a potential hunting season say

Big Game Hunting Hunting in Africa Big Game - is for many the very essence of hunting in Africa. Big Game does not just mean big animals, but big challenges and experiences. Technically speaking by far the most hunting in Africa is actually Big Game Hunting. Even many species of antilope are actually classed as big game. However if is first and foremost The Big Five, that one thinks about when the conversation turns to big game hunting. Lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhinoceros have been the great attraction for Big Game hunters travelling to Africa on safari for centuries, and they still are. While it is true that hunting for rhino is perhaps not once what it once was, as today this species is highly protected and surrounded by a great deal of security, the remaining species can still be hunted in the wild African bush - with all the wonderful experiences that this brings with it. Generally speaking it is only in the areas where hunting outfitters operate that the increasing lev

Washington wolf livestock rule change up for comment If a new rule is passed, Washington livestock owners will have to prove that they already tried non-lethal conflict methods to deal with wolf depredation before the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) would use lethal measures. WDFW will be collecting public comment on the proposal Feb. 22 to April 11, according to a press release. The proposed rule would amend the language of Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 220-440-080. It would also create a new rule (WAC 220-440-260) that “directs WDFW staff, in consultation with willing, affected livestock producers, as well as affected federal, state, and tribal agencies, to author conflict mitigation plans that would establish area-specific criteria for the use of non-lethal and lethal measures to mitigate wolf-livestock conflict in areas of chronic conflict.” Both proposals are a result of the September 2020 decision by Governor Jay Inslee to create rules that would both r

Hardest Deer to Hunt Every hunter loves to boast about their stories on how hard hunting their buck was. But are those really that difficult? Today we will be talking about the hardest deer to hunt out there in the wilderness. When it comes to hunting, it is not just about finding the animal. This journey involves a lot of other challenges like facing bitter mountain winds, climbing over boulders. Such hunts are enough for reducing even those with reasonable fitness to a broken-hearted, weak-kneed puddle if the hunter is not aware of the challenges that come when hunting the hardest animals. Coues Deer The big deal for hunting Coues deer is to pursue them in the rough region where they thrive. These slight gray whitetail bucks rarely grow more than 130 in of antler, however, they are adept at disappearing into the cover. They use cactus vegetation and a scant thorn in the desert to stay hidden. Another challenging part about hunting this deer is they don’t offer large targets and al

Hunting in Brazil: What are the options? Abstract In Brazil most forms of hunting and keeping of wild animals are illegal, although they remain widely practiced and are deeply culturally embedded in many regions. The drivers of such widespread non-compliance are poorly understood and evidence to support future policy decisions is generally lacking. In this paper, we seek to stimulate a critical debate on how to deal with hunting in Brazil by analysing the main factors driving non-compliance with current legislation. This is particularly timely given that several amendments to existing legislation are currently under consideration. Our analysis suggests that, while there are no simple solutions to non-compliance, a targeted suite of the following policy options could improve the monitoring, sustainability and conservation consequences of hunting in Brazil: (i) simplifying the process to become a registered subsistence hunter; (ii) expanding participation in licensing schemes; (iii) inv

Do Biologists Listen to Hunters? Reality is, wildlife managers listen more than many believe — but hunters have to listen in return, too Although such situations can be frustrating, officials say open dialogue is the key to bridging the gap between hunters and biologists. Butler believes that starts with giving hunters real-world numbers. “Here in Mississippi, we have great deal of data on what real hunters see and hear while in the field based on the observations they record as a part of our Spring Gobbler Hunting Survey,” he said. “Over the past 20 years, hunters in Mississippi hear between one and two gobblers per hunt, on average. Hunts in which more than four gobblers are heard only happen on about six to eight trips out of every 100. Most properties only harvest about one gobbler per 500 acres, on average. These numbers don’t sound eye-popping, but they’ve been pretty consistent through time and should help us all really appreciate those rare days when the woods are on fire and

Review of Antonio Zoli Columbus Gold Shotgun 12-76, 750mm As an avid hunter with years of experience in the field, I've had the pleasure of using the Antonio Zoli Columbus Gold shotgun in various hunting conditions. Here are my thoughts on this piece of equipment, including some of its strengths and weaknesses. Pros: Craftsmanship: One of the most striking features of the Columbus Gold is its undeniable craftsmanship. The wood finish is exquisite, providing a classic look that stands out in both form and function. The engravings are detailed and reflect the high-quality craftsmanship that Italian shotguns are known for. Balance and Weight: The shotgun is well-balanced, which makes for a more controlled shooting experience. At 750mm in length, it feels versatile for both upland bird hunting and waterfowl. The weight is appropriate for its class; it doesn’t feel overly heavy during long hunts, allowing for comfortable handling. Recoil Management: The 12-gauge caliber typically has s

Bull Riding Rat Taxidermy Creating a Bull Riding Rat taxidermy piece involves a blend of creativity and traditional taxidermy techniques. Here's a simplified process: Preparation: First, a rat specimen is carefully skinned, and the hide is preserved through tanning to prevent decay and maintain its shape. Form Creation: A custom form or mannequin is created to fit the rat's size and pose. For this unique piece, the form would be adjusted to make the rat appear as if it's riding a small model bull. Mounting the Hide: The preserved rat hide is carefully fitted over the form. The taxidermist stitches it in place, ensuring a natural look and proper alignment of the fur. Detailing: The rat's eyes, ears, and facial features are carefully crafted and positioned for a lifelike appearance. The pose is fine-tuned to make it look like the rat is actively riding the bull. Bull Model: A miniature bull model is prepared, either crafted from scratch or purchased. The model is detailed to match a

Sport hunting helped form a foundation for the preservation and conservation of wildlife in America. Most of the early legislation that formed the foundation for conservation and preservation in the United States was thanks to hunters themselves. Sport hunting was a major movement in nature preservation that widely benefitted conservation efforts from the 1880s-1920s. The reason hunters were so incentivized to preserve nature was to preserve their sport and the moral behind it. When hunting first came to America from Europe, it was viewed as a sport only for a small population of very wealthy people. When hunting shifted from an elitist sport for the rich to a larger majority, this larger group needed to learn to support game preservation. This was realized in the 1880s, when herds of buffalo quickly began to disappear. Some examples of the things that hunters accomplished in supporting game preservation, thus protecting the environment, between 1880 and 1920 include abolishing m

Fox Hunting in Britain Fox hunting has been occurring in different guises worldwide for hundreds of years. Indeed the practise of using dogs with a keen sense of smell to track prey has been traced back to ancient Egypt and many Greek and Roman influenced countries. However it is believed that the custom for a fox to be tracked, chased and often killed by trained hunting hounds (generally those with the keenest sense of smell known as ‘scent hounds’) and followed by the Master of the Foxhounds and his team on foot and horseback, originated from a Norfolk farmer’s attempt to catch a fox using farm dogs in 1534. Whilst foxes were widely regarded as vermin and farmers and other landowners had hunted the animals for many years as a form of pest control (both to curb their attacks on farm animals and for their highly prized fur) it wasn’t until the eighteenth century that fox hunting developed into it’s most modern incarnation and was considered a sport in its own right as a result of the
