Suddenly a huge head appears in the gap... An evening in August. The roe deer’s rutting season is about to come to an end despite the fact that it seems not to have properly got going. In the evening, I grab my stuff from my desk and look out the window. It had rained all day, but now some rays of sun were starting to appear, already lower in the sky. The conditions couldn’t be better, so I quickly pack my gun and my backpack and head for the hunting ground.Post: 29 March 10:05

U.S. Chief Inspector of Hunting George A. with a confiscated 10.9-inch and 250-pound rifle that was used to hunt ducks. 1920. A punt gun is a type of extremely large shotgun used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for shooting large numbers of waterfowl for commercial harvesting operations and private sport. A single shot could kill over 50 waterfowl resting on the water’s surface. The Tale of George A. and the Giant Rifle In 1920, Chief Inspector of Hunting George A. Thompson lived in Millbrook, Illinois. Known for his strict enforcement of wildlife laws, George was dedicated to protecting migratory birds. One day, he received a tip about illegal duck hunting. Upon reaching the marsh, George heard an unusually loud gunshot. He discovered a monstrous rifle—10.9 inches in diameter and weighing 250 pounds—being used to hunt ducks. It was not unusual for such a band of hunters to acquire as many as 500 birds in a single day. In the United States, this practice depleted stocks of wildPost: 9 October 23:00

When is the right time to restrict your aging hunting dog from the field? With shaking hands and nervous anticipation, I slipped the GPS collar around Winchester’s neck and felt the subtle trembling always present prior to launch. For a moment, I considered leaving the collar in the truck, knowing my big running partner wouldn’t be running strong enough for me to fear him going over the edge of nowhere, one of the defining characteristics of our 12-year relationship. He sat quietly, except for the gentle thumping of his tail on the seat, while I assembled the Winchester 101, 12-gauge, I had also considered leaving in the truck. But, Winchester knew that the gun and the collar meant a hunt, and their absence meant the outing was only a walk. The March morning had dawned clear and cold, suggesting the snow cover in the mountains would present a crust that would support Winchester’s weight. Opportunities for the perfect conditions that once were a luxury had become a necessity for WincPost: 18 April 12:51
No Ammo? No Problem As the ammo shortage continues, these five drills can help you keep sharp ahead of hunting season without burning any powder Some hunters never practice with their firearms until the weekend before opening day, when they take it out and shoot a few rounds to ensure it’s still sighted in. Even if the gun is still on, the hunter’s skills might not be. Shooting skills are perishable, but currently, firing a few rounds can cost you. The ammo shortage continues, and it’s making it difficult for hunters to not only find ammunition, but afford to buy it when they do find it. If you’re the hunter who only has a box or two stashed away, you’ll want to make every shot count, which means there’s not much wiggle room for range practice. Luckily, there are still ways to sharpen your shooting skills without sending a bullet downrange. 1. Dry Firing It’s OK to dry fire most firearms. Dry firing means pulling the trigger without a bullet in the chamber, and it won’t hurt most modePost: 11 April 15:18
This is a close up shot from my living room window in Ancient Olympia, Greece. I have a five month old daughter who adores birds and looking at them got me pondering. Most of them are migratory birds and I am about to embark on a similar move. This is not my hometown, I moved here two and a half years ago, this was essentially the first place I rented. I came here single and in a matter of two months I got married and a year later I got pregnant. A number of adversities have come my way, the harshest of which is my current state of unemployment. We have decided to move to a place far away from here, to my grandmother's place. It's a small cottage but it will be our home by the sea on a Greek island. I wish I could let those birds know where we are moving so they can visit and have a rest. Inner peace and love to everyonePost: 18 July 17:24
General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU USSR Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev on a hunt in the hunting farm "Zalesye" (Brovarsky district, Kiev region) with a carbine MC 10-09. Hunting was a favorite pastime of the rulers of all nations, because among those who took great power, there are no vegetarians. Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU, was not averse to hunting either. According to official data, he owned 13 units of rifled and smoothbore weapons. Although one of his contemporaries mentioned almost a hundred guns stored in the collection of the leader. He had more than one and a half hundred hunting rifles, and the reason for that was not even his passion, but the reaction of his colleagues and subordinates to this hobby. He received 2-3 guns for each of his birthdays. Only at Brezhnev's neighboring dacha in Zavidovo there were three huge safes, which contained more than 90 smoothbore hunting rifles. But MC 10-09 was one of hPost: 22 August 11:54

Why We Hunt - An Ancient Activity Hunting is an ancient human activity. As such it means experiencing an original way of life in unspoiled nature. Hunting can be the purest form of eco-tourism. And yes, of course we enjoy hunting. Of course we enjoy the thrill of a stalk. Yes, of course we enjoy the adrenalin rush when facing a wild un-collared lion. There is nothing wrong with that, these are inherent components of our own nature. City people seem to have forgotten that man can and should be part of nature. And above all, the laws of hunter and hunted are the very foundation on which nature rests. If we still want nature – and that is the principle decision mankind has to take – we have to understand and accept it as it is; and true, honest hunting is the very school of life.... But we don’t enjoy killing. We have to kill to have hunted. And when at times we have to kill, we try to do so clean and quick and painless. At the same time death is part of life – it is not always easyPost: 4 July 16:20
Tips for Hunting Fox Squirrels Tactics for hunting our largest tree squirrel aren’t the same as for more common gray squirrels “Let’s go chase after a fox squirrel.” Those were the last words I remember my friend Hunter saying to me before we wandered down the logging road that cut through the top of Brush Mountain. I was cramming my brain with communication law court cases for an exam. He knew exactly how to escape the books. In a sudden dart down the mountainside, Hunter vanished into the fall foliage. I scuffled through the leaves behind him the best I could in rubber boots to find him encouraging me to hurry. He handed me the .22 Magnum. “It’s a fox squirrel,” Hunter whispered. The squirrel was frozen high up in an oak tree. I aimed the gun to the sky. It took me too long to steady my shooting position, and I was certain the squirrel was going to move. But he remained still as a statue, and at the shot, the squirrel fell through the autumn air. Its fur was auburn and delicate, andPost: 27 June 11:27
CZ Debuts 600 Series: A Firsthand View If Ford opted to replace the F150 with some new line of pickups, the new design better fill the category. The new series also better be loaded with innovations that aficionados of the brand really do want and need. It also should be close enough to the original beloved DNA of the brand that customers will be excited about, but still comfortable with, the change. 600 Alpha So when CZ said it developed a new 600 series of bolt-action rifles—guns that will reportedly replace the CZ 527 and CZ 557—and asked us to come to the Czech Republic to see them, we were excited about the prospect. We were hopeful they had designed a rifle that would be a smart replacement for established models. We were also hoping this new 600 series would send competitors scrambling for their SolidWorks programs to see how they could adjust to a new design in a very mature firearm category. Remington Model Seven When I worked behind a gun counter, probably I sold more Model Sevens than all of my colleagues combined. The Model Seven is essentially a shortened 700 action that maintains virtually all of its virtues. These little rifles prove that you don’t need a magnum-length barrel to have an effective hunting rifle. Compact, relatively light and portable, these rifles are just the ticket for hunting from tree stands, in timber or in thick brush. Though Model Sevens were chambered in everything from the 17 Remington to the 300 SAUM over the years, examples in .260, 6.5 Creedmoor and 7mm-08 are my personal favorites, particularly for whitetails..Post: 1 October 10:42

Trinidad and Tobago There is a very active tradition of hunting small to medium-sized wild game in Trinidad and Tobago. Hunting is carried out with firearms, slingshots and cage traps, and sometimes aided by the use of hounds. The illegal use of trap guns and snare nets also occurs. With approximately 12,000 to 13,000 hunters applying for and being granted hunting permits in recent years, there is some concern that the practice might not be sustainable. In addition there are at present no bag limits and the open season is comparatively very long (5 months – October to February inclusive). As such hunting pressure from legal hunters is very high. Added to that, there is a thriving and very lucrative black market for poached wild game (sold and enthusiastically purchased as expensive luxury delicacies) and the numbers of commercial poachers in operation is unknown but presumed to be fairly high. As a result, the populations of the five major mammalian game species (red-rumped agouti, lowPost: 21 September 10:34

Beretta AL391 Urika 2 (12 Gauge) - A Hunter's review I've owned and hunted with a Beretta AL391 Urika 2 for a good number of years now. It was my go-to semi-auto for everything from waterfowl to upland birds, and even the occasional sporting clays outing. I've put it through its paces in all sorts of conditions – rain, snow, heat, dust – and have a pretty solid understanding of its strengths and weaknesses. The Good Stuff Beretta AL391 Urika 2 12-gauge: Shooting Comfort: This is where the Urika 2 truly shines. The gas-operated system does a fantastic job of soaking up recoil. Even with heavier magnum loads, it's surprisingly manageable, which translates to less fatigue during long days in the field and faster follow-up shots. Compared to inertia-driven guns, it's noticeably softer on the shoulder. Reliability (Mostly): When clean and properly maintained, the Urika 2 is generally reliable. It'll cycle a wide range of loads, from light target rounds to heavier hunting loads, withoutPost: 16 February 20:53
The Champawat tigress is a man-eating animal that killed 436 people! Photo: 1911 Nepal, Jim Corbett. In the early 1900s, the Nepalese region close to the Himalayas was terrorized by the most famous and bloodthirsty man-eating animal. Men, women, and children disappeared into the jungle. The attacks were so frequent and violent that the locals started talking about demons and punishments from the gods. But the Bengal tigress was the culprit! Champawat tigress was forced to hunt humans, but I'll tell you about that later. After people found out that people were disappearing because of the tigress. People started hunting for her, all attempts were in vain. The number of people killed has reached 200! I had to turn to the army. Hundreds of people with guns combed the region in search of her. Fleeing from them, the Champawat Tigress crossed the border with India and stopped in the Kumaon region. Settled in the forests of India, Champawat Tigress went back to her old ways. Dove Hunting 101: From Cornfield to Kitchen Flying targets are very difficult for most people, and dove are some of the most challenging of them all. With that in mind, let’s take a few minutes to ensure your shots count this year in the dove field. The fundamentals of shooting a shotgun are vital to becoming a successful dove hunter, as there are many things that contribute to actually hitting the target. You must avoid mental breakdowns and learn how to keep your mind from getting in the way of your fundamentals. In this article we will look in-depth at what those fundamentals are. Stance Your stance when shooting a shotgun should be different from shooting other guns. The placement of your feet is critical in having a smooth motion when taking a shot. For right-handed shooters, stand with your left foot in front of your right, about shoulder width apart or just under. Shift your weight slightly toward your lead foot to help brace yourself for the recoil of the shotgun. If the birPost: 16 September 19:23

Bear Gun Shootout: The Drill To get a better handle on this debate I enlisted the help of two fellow pistoleros: Sean Murphy, a USPSA Grand Master, and Outdoor Life staff writer Tyler Freel, who by virtue of living in Alaska hunts bears every year. We conducted a live-fire experiment at Gunsite Academy in the form of a simple, but challenging drill. The three of us shot an array of five knockdown steel poppers from far to near to simulate a bear charge. The farthest target was in the center and then we zig-zagged from far left to far right and then to near left and near right to add in erratic motion and increase the stress level. The farthest target was approximately 20 yards away and the closest were about 12 yards downrange. Watch the video above to see the drill for yourself.Post: 16 December 17:07

Hunting Ammo: What to Look for in a Big-Game Bullet Hunting bullets have come a long way since the first round lead ball was launched game-ward from a long-barreled muzzleloader. Bullets now are long and streamlined, tipped with space-age material, and constructed of copper married to lead through special bonding processes. They are incredibly accurate, highly aerodynamic, and boast superb terminal performance. They are the finest killing projectiles the world has ever known; that’s a great thing for us as hunters. Guns and Gear for an Alaska Caribou Hunt Editor's Note: Contributor Brad Fitzpatrick put the following gear to use on a recent Alaska caribou hunt. You can catch up on that story here. Savage 110 Ultralite Savage’s new 110 Ultralite weighs just 6 pounds thanks to its polymer stock and carbon fiber barrel. Chambered in .280 Ackley Improved, the rifle is reliable and accurate and suitable for just about any North American game. Its stock allows for comb height and length-of-pull adjustments, and the adjustable Savage AccuTrigger came set at a crisp 2.5 pounds. MSRP: $1,595; savagearms.com. Hornady GMX Handloads I used handloads topped with Hornady’s 150-grain GMX. The GMX is a monolithic bullet and is versatile for big game, particularly at extended ranges because it performs reliably at relatively low velocities. The GMX has also proven to be very accurate out of several rifles I’ve tested, including the Savage. (The GMX bullet has now been replaced by Hornady’s new CX bullet). LeupPost: 2 November 20:29

Hunters couldn't ask for better conditions when Wisconsin's annual nine-day gun deer season opens Saturday. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials believe that three wolves shot and killed just over the state’s border in Wyoming may have belonged to Colorado’s closely watched North Park wolf pack. Associated Press DENVER (AP) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials believe that three wolves shot and killed just over the state's border in Wyoming may have belonged to Colorado's closely watched North Park wolf pack. The North Park pack, which often crosses into Wyoming where hunting wolves is legal, gained notoriety last year after birthing Colorado’s first known litter of pups in 80 years. Travis Duncan, spokesperson for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, said in an email that the agency cannot yet confirm whether the slain wolves were in the North Park pack but will continue to monitor the animals "if and when they are next seen in the area.” Duncan added that at least two wolves were sPost: 20 November 17:54
