Salvador Dali and the rhinoceros. 1956 Photo by Philip Halsman Dalí was interested in the rhinoceros; he considered the horn a perfect logarithmic spiral; the perfect form present in nature. In the painting, Dalí noticed a series of ‘cones’. that he identified as horns. As he says in his dairy “The Lacemakers is morphologically the horn of a rhinoceros” (Diary of a Genius). Finally he’d found the connection between the girl in Vermeer’s painting and the rhinoceros. Rhinocéros en désintégration is a remarkable watercolour painted by Salvador Dalí in 1950 that invokes several of the key themes in the artist’s work of the immediate post-war era. Centring on the image of a rhinoceros suspended in space and in the process of disintegrating under the mystical spell of a divine, heavenly being, the work is an invocation of the new personal form of mysticism that Dalí was to outline one year later in his ‘Mystical Manifesto’ of 1951. It had been around the time that Dalí painted Rhinocéros en désintégration in 1950 that Dalí had first been given a rhino horn by the poet Emmanuel Looten. Following this it was, in the early part of the decade at least, to become an obsessive icon in his work. In much Eastern mythology the rhino horn is widely believed to be a source of sexual potency. For Dalí too, the rhinoceros was an image of strength and virility that ultimately manifested itself in the phallic projection of its horn. Its complimentary symbol, however, was the Virgin whom Dalí regarded as being both the target and the receptacle of the rhino’s virility. Embroiled also in these concerns, was Dalí’s obsession throughout the early 1950s with the rhinoceros. For Dalí the rhinoceros was a ‘cosmic’ animal that belonged in the heavens - even more than the elephants of his famous painting The Temptation of Saint Anthony. The rhino’s hide, Dalí asserted, had ‘plenty of divine granulations’, and its horns, he had been delighted to discover, were ‘the only ones in the animal kingdom constructed in accordance with a perfect logarithmic spiral’ One of his paintings, "A Paranoico-critical Study of the Lace Girl" Vermeer", is an interpretation of the famous painting by the Dutch artist. Dali painted part of the canvas in the Paris zoo, in the enclosure for rhinos. A copy of Lace Girl was hung nearby and a live rhinoceros was walking. Dali believed that the "Lace Maker" had incredible spiritual power. The artist saw in the outlines of the girl the favorite shape of rhinoceros horns, and the chastity of the heroine only reinforced this image. In one of his lectures, Salvador Dali said that if there had been a battle between a Lace-maker and a rhinoceros in the zoo that day, the Lace-maker would have won, since she herself is a huge rhinoceros horn, whereas a rhinoceros The photo of Salvador Dali standing face to face with a rhinoceros was taken in 1952. Dali, in a coat and a hat resembling a rhinoceros horn, as if imitating his favorite animal.

SITKA Goes Under ‘Cover’ With Next-Gen Greener Camo When a brand chooses to "Go Green" these days, it tends to mean something completely different. It may seem like a new color to many, but the new palette at SITKA has a lot of hunters excited. OPTIFADE Cover is the first camo option from SITKA that brings increased levels of green and deeper shadows to its lineup. The brand worked with researchers at the University of Georgia Deer Research Lab to create the palette. The goal was to offer better concealment in “greener seasons,” with a focus on hiding hunters in densely vegetated areas and leafy tree environments. Regionally, the target audience for this new shift in shade was the eastern United States. Obviously, this isn’t going to be the top choice for golden grasslands or the red rock of the open badlands, but that isn’t what it’s meant for. Not only does Cover work well in the environments it was designed for, but it also works really well in lower-light, heavily shadowed landscapes, and it absolutely disappears in the pine.

Stylish Home Interiors Featuring Hunting Trophies: Bears, Foxes, Deer, and Iconic African Wildlife Transforming your home into a stylish haven can take on a unique twist when you incorporate hunting trophies. Character pieces like bears, foxes, deer, and famous African animals can add a striking visual element while paying homage to nature and the art of wildlife conservation. First, consider the placement of your trophies. A grand bear mount above a stone fireplace can create a bold centerpiece, making the living room feel both rustic and luxurious. Surround it with a palette of warm browns, deep greens, and soft neutrals to enhance the natural aesthetic. You might also think about introducing a variety of textures through rustic wooden furniture and soft fabrics, like leather or wool, to create a cozy atmosphere. In a more eclectic setting, fox mounts can add a whimsical touch. Their playful nature can shine through when displayed alongside vintage hunting gear or framed wildlife art. This juxtaposition of historic and contemporary elements invites conversation and reflects the owner's passion for the outdoors. The graceful presence of a deer mount can bring an air of elegance to a hallway or entryway. Choose a stylish frame and pair it with complementary decor, such as mounted antlers or soft lighting, to highlight the trophy beautifully. This can create an inviting first impression for guests while paying tribute to the beauty of wildlife. For a taste of Africa, consider showcasing mounted heads of iconic animals like a lion, zebra, or kudu. These pieces can serve as breathtaking focal points in a room and can be paired with ethnic-inspired decor, such as woven textiles, tribal art, and natural materials, to establish a cohesive theme that reflects the rich cultures of the African continent. Incorporating hunting trophies into your home is not just about decoration; it is also about storytelling. Each piece has a history and allows for the sharing of adventures and respect for wildlife. Set #2 of the FLYING pika! (Please view each image large for details) One of my absolute favorite and most challenging subjects to photograph........the mighty American Pika. These tiny critters the size of a guinea pig, are the speediest and hardest working animals in the alpine zone of the mountains. They are Lagomorphs and closely related to rabbits. They spend most of their days gathering tundra grasses and wildflowers to store in their winter food stashes to be able to survive the cold harsh mountain winters. I spend numerous days and hours each summer up high in the Rocky mountains of Colorado, observing and trying to photograph these little speedsters. Here is the second set of photos. All images captured with a Nikon Z8 and Nikkor 800mm F6.3 lens, some with a 1.4x teleconverter for focal length of 1120mm. Most are captured with a shutter speed of 1/4000 sec, F7.1 or F8, various ISO's up to 20,0000, handheld and cropped.
