Louisiana sets first hunting season for iconic 'Teddy' bear in 2024 as population swells Louisiana approved the first hunting season for the black bear next year after the state's large carnivore expert assured wildlife regulators the once threatened population has grown enough to sustain a limited harvest. The Louisiana Wildlife Commission voted unanimously Thursday to establish the season for the iconic "Teddy" bear in December 2024 in which 10 adult bears can be killed. Commissioners voted to issue the 10 permits through a lottery. Hunting next year will be limited to the northeastern Louisiana Mississippi Delta parishes East Carroll, Madison, Tensas and West Carroll and portions of Catahoula, Franklin and Richland. "We can certainly have a conservative harvest in limited areas," John Hanks, manager of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries large carnivore program, told commissioners during the October meeting. Louisiana's black bear population all but disappeared i

3rd First Nation group wants use of Jasper National Park, saying they were evicted in 1911 By Bob Weber The Canadian Press Posted October 31, 2023 2:24 pm Updated October 31, 2023 5:17 pm A third First Nation wants Parks Canada to give its members increased access, including limited hunting rights, to Jasper National Park, saying they were evicted when it was created in western Alberta. “Aseniwuche Winewak calls on Parks Canada to immediately enter into negotiations … restore our access to the park and to prioritize our involvement in the co-management of Jasper both as the park’s current neighbouring Indigenous Peoples and its former inhabitants,” said an Oct. 27 letter from the band to Jasper National Park superintendent Alan Fehr. Last weekend, Parks Canada held a ceremony in the park to help celebrate the re-establishment of an ancient treaty between the Simpcw and Stoney First Nations under which the two nations agreed to share the resources of what has become Jasper. It’s never too early to start planning for next year’s big trips. National Geographic is getting an early start, too, releasing its Best of the World list in late October with 25 must-see destinations for 2023. Respect – for the people and their cultures, for the land and its conservation – is an overarching theme of the list, which is divided into five official categories. The hope is that 2023 will be not just a big return to travel but also to rediscovering wonder, said Amy Alipio, senior editor for National Geographic Travel. “Because when you are awed by something, you treat it with respect. And that spirit is something we want to encourage with this list,” Alipio said. The list focuses on destinations that have community-led conservation efforts, healing and heritage journeys and ways for travelers to give back as well as places that are doing important work in ecotourism, sustainability and inclusive travel.

Nevada hunters make positive impact on rural economies Nevada hunters help local economies through their hunting dollars. A new study conducted by the University of Nevada, Reno (UN-R) in collaboration with the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) analyzed data from 2020 and looked at the amount of money spent on travel and hunting expenses as well as hunting-related expenses like all-terrain vehicles, firearms, ammunition and campers, according to a press release. The conclusion? Big money comes from big game and upland game hunters, which positively impacts rural communities where “wildlife is plentiful,” particularly in Elko, White Pine and Lincoln counties. In 2020, hunters spent about $380 million on hunting in Nevada. And the spending was nearly identical to that in 2019, meaning that the COVID-19 pandemic did little to deter the amount of money spent and the number of hunters who hunted. Researchers worked with NDOW to collect expenditures via a survey sent to 2,000 hunters,

UTAH ADDS MORE COW ELK PERMITS TO 2021/22 SEASON There will be more elk opportunity in Utah for the 2021/22 season. Last month, the Utah Wildlife Board approved additional cow elk hunting permits across the state to help manage elk during the extended drought season, according to a press release. “These permits were proposed to help minimize conflicts and damage that could occur on big game winter ranges, as well as possible conflicts with agricultural properties. These additional elk permits are intended to reduce competition between elk and other big game species on winter ranges and to ensure the overall health of various elk and deer herds,” said Covy Jones, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) big game coordinator. “These issues are a result of the severe drought limiting typical habitat and feed for elk and other big game animals across Utah, so these additional permits are being implemented as a proactive measure.” According to UDWR, there will be an additional 1,052 an
