Wyoming reduces number of mule deer and antelope tags There will be fewer tags for Wyoming mule deer and antelope this year. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) decided to reduce the number of tags due to disease and drought, according to Wyoming Public Radio. EHD, or blue tongue, has impacted herds and continuing drought means more competition for available forage. Ian Tator, WGFD’s terrestrial habitat manager, says that “elk will out compete mule deer and [antelope] for vegetation.” “We had an outbreak of blue tongue this last summer, which just means there are that many less animals available,” says Tator. “If those animals aren't there to begin with, we're not going to issue licenses for them.” This means that WGFD will cut the number of antelope licenses by 8,000 and mule deer licenses by 3,300 for the 2022 hunting season. WISCONSIN BOWHUNTER ATTACKED BY BLACK BEAR When you’re hunting from a treestand, the last thing you expect is for a bear to climb up to attack you. Unfortunately, that’s what happened to Wisconsin bowhunter Dalton Roach. The 300-lb black bear, curious as to what Roach was doing up in the tree, climbed up and bit him in the back, KARE reports. “It’s definitely not totally uncommon for a bear to go into a tree with a hunter,” said Roach. “But the fact that he actually started gnawing on me and stuff, like that was a little abnormal.” He initially spotted the bear from his treestand and started recording it; however, “[b]y the time he was under my tree and then up behind me, [it] was 15 total seconds,” said Roach. At 78 years of age, cancer has pretty much taken away my ability to climb mountains in search of elk. Don’t feel sorry for me, I have killed plenty of elk, mostly cows for the good eating. The good Lord has allowed me more than a charmed life. CHOOSING THE RIGHT HUNTING KNIFE 1. CLIP POINT KNIFE The tip on this knife curves upward and allows you to pierce the hide and cut a pattern. The pattern is the initial cut you make down each leg and up the belly before removing the skin. You can skin your animal with this knife but the shape of the blade tends to cut holes in the hide while skinning. This particular knife is a folding model, easy to carry in a pocket. 2. DROP POINT KNIFE This is your skinning knife. You’ll notice the tip doesn’t sweep upwards like a clip point knife. A drop point knife is less likely to accidentally poke through the hide. These days there are very few new products that I would actually call a “game changer.” Many are truthfully nothing more than a twist on an old idea or a slight improvement over something already available. A SIXTH SENSE? I returned to the same ranch the following autumn with my two sons with the intent of tagging a couple of those bucks. However, I had no intention of letting them shoot a buck as it ran to the sound of the landowner’s ATV. Even if I did, it wouldn’t have mattered. The deer didn’t come running, preferring instead to wait for the cover of darkness to come to the corn, despite that the ranch’s deer were rarely hunted. Do whitetails have innate ability to know when something poses a risk or when it doesn’t? There’s no way to tell, but it sure seems that way. As Salamone suggests, urban deer seem to know when a human in their woods is hunting them and when he isn’t. That’s why we need to take all the precautions we can, no matter where we hunt.
