Finnmark Hunting Regions in Norway: A Hunter’s Paradise. Geographical and Natural Features, Hunters and Demographics and Hunting Characteristics
Geographical and Natural Features: Exploring the Landscape and Ecosystems
Finnmark, located in the northernmost part of Norway, is the largest and least populated county in the country. Its vast landscapes include tundra, mountains, forests, and coastal areas, making it a prime location for hunting. The region is home to diverse ecosystems, including the Arctic tundra and the boreal forest, which provide ideal habitats for a variety of game species. The harsh climate, with long winters and short summers, adds a unique challenge to hunting in this region.
Hunters and Demographics: Understanding the People Behind the Tradition
Finnmark has a relatively small population, with around 75,000 inhabitants. Despite its low population density, hunting is a popular activity, with approximately 5,000 registered hunters in the region (2025 data). Hunt
The sable is a mammal of the genus of martens. It is widespread in the forest zone of Siberia, the edge of its range extends to the north of Eastern Europe.
The body length of the sable is 32-58 cm, the tail is 9-17 cm, and the weight is 0.9—1.8 kg. Males are larger than females. Sable fur is one of the most valuable, which is why sable has been exterminated for centuries. On the other hand, the extraction of sable and the trade in sable fur has long served as one of the significant income items in the Russian economy.
Sable is of great importance in Russian culture and traditions. In some Russian folk wedding songs, the sable is the personification of the groom, while the paired character, the bride, is the marten. The images of the groom are especially clear, as the sable appears in the North Russian wedding songs. In the Belarusian tradition, a young couple is symbolized by a sable and a squirrel. Sable is of particular importance in the Buryat culture. The sable was a totemic a

Polar bears have long provided important raw materials for Arctic peoples, including the Inuit, Yupik, Chukchi, Nenets, Russian Pomors and others. Hunters commonly used teams of dogs to distract the bear, allowing the hunter to spear the bear or shoot it with arrows at closer range. Almost all parts of captured animals had a use. The fur was used in particular to make trousers and, by the Nenets, to make galoshes-like outer footwear called tobok; the meat is edible, despite some risk of trichinosis; the fat was used in food and as a fuel for lighting homes, alongside seal and whale blubber; sinews were used as thread for sewing clothes; the gallbladder and sometimes heart were dried and powdered for medicinal purposes; the large canine teeth were highly valued as talismans. Only the liver was not used, as its high concentration of vitamin A is poisonous. As a carnivore, which feeds largely upon fish-eating carnivores, the polar bear ingests large amounts of vitamin A that is stored in

The hunt photographed here was more difficult than most — for reasons beyond the weather and rugged terrain. It was my first trip back to Alaska since my father’s death in March of this year.
Dad had joined me in Alaska twice before. The first trip was to fish and explore, the second to hunt caribou above the Arctic Circle. I remember asking him, “Do you want to go caribou hunting?” He shook his head with a quick, “No, not this year.” I pressed, sliding a plane ticket and his caribou tag across the dining room table. Surprised but hesitant—65 years old and a little nervous—he said yes. By June, he was packed and ready for our mid-September departure. That was Dad—quietly determined, but always prepared. We had a great hunt, and he killed a nice bull.
On each solo hunt after that, I’d message him with my InReach every few days, updating him on close calls and wild moments. He loved it all. Last year, I wrote from the Alaska Peninsula, “Dad, I thought we had a big earthquake today—
