In the 1970s, it was normal for groups of young Europeans to go across the Sahara in old Land Rovers, on adventures that bordered on the reckless. A group of Spanish filmmakers did almost the same, reflecting one of these adventures while they themselves lived one, they left in 10 vehicles, three of which returned, and for three months they lived in tents and cars while they filmed. The film was somewhat successful, and was even the first Spanish film to be shown in China. But for whatever reason it fell into oblivion, no one digitized it, and like other things it faded into history. But its director recovered 25,000 meters of film, re-edited it and is now promoting it again. We have not seen it yet (we will on December 9), but the quality of the photography seems outstanding to us. Over the next few weeks we will publish some exclusive videos of both the final footage and the making of. Colorado Parks and Wildlife seeks elk poacher It’s definitely offseason for elk hunting, but someone didn’t get the message. Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is looking for any leads in a recent poaching incident that occurred in Park County, Colorado around June 26. A large bull elk carcass was left to waste with the majority of the meat still there, according to Channel 9 News. CPW believes the elk was illegally shot between June 24 and 26 in the area between Como and Hartsel, west of Colorado Springs. The carcass was dumped along Pike National Forest Road 146. A high-power rifle was used and only the backstraps and one antler was removed. The rest of the carcass was left to rot. CPW is hopeful that campers or residents in the Tarryall area or the Indian Mountain Buffalo subdivisions may have seen something related to the crime. “This was a senseless and disgraceful act which demonstrates a complete disregard for Colorado’s wildlife,” said Ian Petkash, CPW District Wildlife Mana

African Wildcat (Africa) Felis silvestris lybica DESCRIPTION (male) Head and body length 21-26 inches (545-665 mm). Tail 11-14 inches (275-360 mm). Weight 9-14 pounds (4-6 kg). (female) Head & body length 18-24 inches (460-620 mm). Tail 10-14 inches (255-355 mm). Weight 5-11 pounds (2.3-5.0 kg). Females have four pairs of teats. The African wildcat is generally recognized as the ancestor of the domestic cat (Felis catus) and often interbreeds with it. The two species are similar in size and appearance and can be difficult to identify in the field; however, there are two features that distinguish purebred wildcats from domestic cats and hybrids. In the wildcat, the backs of the ears are a rich reddish-brown, while domestic cats and hybrids usually have dark gray or black-backed ears, with perhaps a little red. A second feature is the wildcat's long legs. When a wildcat sits upright, its long front legs raise the body almost to the vertical, a position that is nearly impossible for dome

The Mid-Gun-Season Blues: When Times Get Tough Morning Hunts I believe your chances are best during this period when you hunt a morning stand back in the timber. When the pressure is on, an old deer feels most comfortable cruising around or pushing a doe on a hardwood ridge or in a cedar draw or creek bottom. By that time, he should have gone completely nocturnal, but deep woods give him a false sense of security. A buck believes he’s hidden in the trees, but he’s not if you’re posted there. Set up early, and look for a good deer ghosting around at dawn. Then keep hanging tough. Each day into midseason, you’ll hear fewer gunshots and see fewer hunters stomping around the woods. Most of the die-hards who, like you, haven’t tagged out will hunt a couple of hours in morning and afternoon. At midday, things will settle down, and some deer will get up and move. You might still nail a good buck between 9 a.m. and noon.

Hunting season in East Belgium In East Belgium hunting can be carried out in an expansive forested area spanning some 45,000 hectares (111,000 acres). The right to hunt there can be obtained by leasing a hunting ground of at least 50 hectares (123 acres) from the forest owners (the Walloon region, the municipalities or the private owners). This lease runs for 6, 9 or 12 years. It goes without saying that every hunter must hold a hunting licence which is obtained by passing a suitable examination. In East Belgium, game predominantly consists of stags, deer and wild boars, the hunting of which is strictly organised by legislation and the large gamekeeping communities. Contrary to popular belief, hunting is not only organised for the pleasure of hunters but, above all, for the purpose of regulating the number of animals in the forest so that the economic utilisation of the forest is ensured. If game numbers are too high, this can result in substantial damage being caused to the rejuvenat

9 Ways to Ruin Your Outfitted Hunt A multi-thousand-dollar hunt is something to take seriously while still enjoying a great time. Here’s how to behave yourself Outfitted hunts can be very exciting. I’ve done several of them, and most were with salt-of-the-earth folks who respected one another and had a great time. But I’ve shared a couple of camps with chest-thumping types who cussed and drank more than they hunted. It ruined an otherwise great atmosphere. Have you ever been on an outfitted hunt and experienced someone or several people acting foolishly? Did it negatively affect your hunt time in camp? For that matter, have you been the annoying or disrespectful guy or gal in camp? You want to have a good time on an outfitted hunt, but it’s important to follow some common-sense guidelines, too. These are some of the big ones. 1. Keeping Others Awake After traveling a great distance and paying thousands, who wants to be kept awake by someone is talking loudly and slamming doors? Out

10 Classic Hunting Rifles Every Hunter Should Own (Part 3) 8. Remington Model 760 Gamemaster The 760 is a box magazine-fed pump-action with similar looks to Remington’s 870 and 1100 shotgun lines. It began production somewhere around 1952, and naturally became a very popular deer woods rifle. Not a style of rifle that’s commonly associated with Alaska or western-style hunting, the Model 760 is a quick-pointing, quick-shooting bush rifle. It’s great for hunting in thick timber where shot distances are limited, but shots might be fleeting. Model 760 Gamemaster in .30/06 would be a great for bear hunting over bait. 9. Browning BAR Designed by Bruce Browning, grandson of John M. Browning, the sporting BAR is a semi-automatic hunting rifle that was introduced in 1968 and first produced in Belgium. It’s box magazine fed and features a hinged trap-door floorplate that’s opened to insert the magazine. The BAR has been highly successful, and different models are still in production today—i

Animals get better care than their owners, study finds A new study conducted by animal welfare charity Brooke suggests that pet owners are more likely to take their pet for a routine check-up at the vet than go to the doctor for a check-up themselves. The study, which was conducted ahead of World Veterinary Day this Saturday, also found that almost 7 in 10 pet owners would always go to their vet in the first instance to get reliable advice on their animal’s wellbeing, ahead of consulting friends and family or checking social media. As 9 in 10 people agree that vets are a vital part of the community, Brooke is highlighting this importance by putting a spotlight on vets all around the world. Vet and TV broadcaster Dr Scott Miller said the findings show a huge reliance on vet services and highlight just how important vet professionals are to people in the UK. “This is something we see replicated around the world, especially within the communities Brooke works in where people depend o

The sable is a mammal of the genus of martens. It is widespread in the forest zone of Siberia, the edge of its range extends to the north of Eastern Europe. The body length of the sable is 32-58 cm, the tail is 9-17 cm, and the weight is 0.9—1.8 kg. Males are larger than females. Sable fur is one of the most valuable, which is why sable has been exterminated for centuries. On the other hand, the extraction of sable and the trade in sable fur has long served as one of the significant income items in the Russian economy. Sable is of great importance in Russian culture and traditions. In some Russian folk wedding songs, the sable is the personification of the groom, while the paired character, the bride, is the marten. The images of the groom are especially clear, as the sable appears in the North Russian wedding songs. In the Belarusian tradition, a young couple is symbolized by a sable and a squirrel. Sable is of particular importance in the Buryat culture. The sable was a totemic a

10 Classic Hunting Rifles Every Hunter Should Own (Part 2) 4. Ruger No. 1 Single-shot hunting rifles aren’t what most of us have in mind when we think of the classics, but the Ruger No. 1 is one that has stood the test of time. It was introduced in 1967 and is a hammerless falling-block single shot that styled after the British Farquharson rifles and was offered in a plethora of chamberings and developed a cult-like following. In an article introducing the Ruger M/77 in the September 1968 issue of OL, O’Connor says the following regarding the still-new Ruger No. 1: “The production of a single-shot big-game rifle was a bold gamble on Ruger’s part. I am sure that 9 out of 10 market consultants would have said that the demand for single-shot rifles for centerfire cartridges had gone out with the mustache cup and the Stanley Steamer. In spite of all this and also in spite of the fact that Ruger gets a premium price for the No. 1 single shot, his (Bill Ruger) only problem has been to prod

Their vibrant plumage and majestic postures become timeless reminders of the beauty of nature when preserved through taxidermy. The process itself is both an art and a science, requiring a deft touch and keen understanding of anatomy. Each step, from skinning to mounting, is meticulously executed to ensure the resulting display is a lifelike homage to the creature's former existence. Hunters often seek to immortalize their trophies, capturing the essence of the hunt and the thrill of the chase. Beyond mere decoration, taxidermy serves an educational purpose, sparking curiosity about biodiversity and the ecological significance of these species. As we gaze upon the lifelike represe

A Navajo Indian in a bear suit, 1914. Navajo Indians donned a bear suit during a ceremonial ritual, embodying the spirit of the revered animal. For the Navajo, the bear symbolizes strength, healing, and protection. By wearing the bear suit—crafted from fur, claws, and adorned with sacred symbols—the individual sought to channel the bear's powerful essence. This act was more than mere costume; it was a profound connection to their cultural heritage and spiritual beliefs. Through this ritual, the Navajo honored the natural world and invoked the bear’s strength for guidance and safeguarding their community. In an era marked by change, this tradition reinforced their identity and reverence for ancient customs. Living primarily in the Four Corners region of the southwestern United States, they were navigating the complexities of preserving their rich cultural heritage while adaptin

How to Stalk a Pronghorn Antelope The heat of the merciless sun pounded the back of my neck as I glassed through the small gap of the lone cedar bush I was crouched behind. His handsomely colored face and long curved black horns seemed to fill the viewfinder as I studied every inch of him. He was a dandy goat, and there was nothing more I wanted to do at that moment than wrap my hands around his black, 16-inch horns. This ground-crawling, torturous stalk began some two hours ago, and needless to say my body ached from the countless gouges, pokes and prods from the seemingly endless supply of needle-sharp plants that inhabit this semi-arid landscape. Although I had whittled the mile down to a mere 110 yards, I could go no farther. It wasn’t because of my lack of sheer will, there was just no cover between me and my bedded prize. I could easily have reached out and touched him with the help of modern ballistics, but I receive no satisfaction from that fact. I wanted to get archery-close
