Hunting season in East Belgium In East Belgium hunting can be carried out in an expansive forested area spanning some 45,000 hectares (111,000 acres). The right to hunt there can be obtained by leasing a hunting ground of at least 50 hectares (123 acres) from the forest owners (the Walloon region, the municipalities or the private owners). This lease runs for 6, 9 or 12 years. It goes without saying that every hunter must hold a hunting licence which is obtained by passing a suitable examination. In East Belgium, game predominantly consists of stags, deer and wild boars, the hunting of which is strictly organised by legislation and the large gamekeeping communities. Contrary to popular belief, hunting is not only organised for the pleasure of hunters but, above all, for the purpose of regulating the number of animals in the forest so that the economic utilisation of the forest is ensured. If game numbers are too high, this can result in substantial damage being caused to the rejuvenatPost: 19 October 09:58

Algeria lifts 25 year long ban on hunting The Algerian government has announced it is lifting the ban on hunting imposed more than 25 years ago because of an Islamist insurgency that was raging at the time, this is according to a report by the BBC. The ban is said to have led to a surge in the population of boars, causing a big nuisance in rural areas where they damaged agricultural land. Authorized hunting will now be able to take place for the next six months, Agriculture Minister Abdelhamid Hamdani was quoted by the Algerian press agency as saying. In the early 1990s, the authorities decided to confiscate hunting guns and ban hunting after armed insurgents started to steal the weapons and use them in their attacks. The ban on hunting other animals and birds has also been lifted.Post: 6 December 17:55

The Australian Deer Association (ADA) is a not-for-profit member-based organisation established in 1969 to advocate for an evidence-based approach to wild deer management and campaign for public land access for recreational deer hunting. Since its beginnings, the ADA has grown to feature an extensive branch network that covers every state and territory in Australia. This network enables the ADA to deliver local hunter education, deer management, and community and member engagement. The ADA partners with government and land managers to advocate and ensure public land access for recreational hunting is not restricted and that an evidence-based approach to wild deer management that is more considered than viewing wild deer as introduced is a reality. Wild birds can now be killed so there are more game birds to shoot in England Millions of beautiful, colourful pheasants are bred every year for British game farms. They are fattened up so that they’re slow and easy to shoot once the hunting season begins. But there has long been debate over when predators can be shot to protect them. Now, as part of new guidelines, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has included a definition for when these birds are considered livestock. Under guidelines on general shooting licences approved in England on 3 January, gamekeepers will be able to legally shoot crows, magpies and jackdaws to defend pheasants, grouse and partridges. But only when they are “kept in an enclosure or which are free-roaming but remain significantly dependent on the provision of food, water or shelter by a keeper for their survival.”Post: 26 July 17:56
New initiative targets Colorado mountain lion hunting What will the future of Colorado mountain lion hunting look like? A new petition filed with the Colorado Supreme Court is asking for a proposed ballot to be blocked that would request voters to approve a “statewide ban on hunting mountain lions, bobcats and Canada lynx.” Opponents say that the measure is “misleading” and multiple mistakes were made by the Colorado Secretary of State’s Title Board prior to getting the measure approved for the November 2024 ballot, according to The Colorado Sun. However, last week, a second initiative, Initiative 101, was filed that requests a limit (not ban) to hunting mountain lions, bobcats and lynx in an effort to curb trophy hunting. If approved, this limit would require “every carcass – excluding usable meat – to be turned over” to prevent “mounting, displaying or preserving wildcats as ‘souvenirs of their hunts.’” Initiative 101 does allow a two-week mountain lion and bobcat season at the enPost: 11 December 09:18
Controversial spring bear hunt up for debate in Washington The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will hear a report Friday on potential changes to the 2022 spring bear hunt season. However, several conservation groups said special permits to hunt black bears in the spring should not be issued at all. The groups said the hunts cruelly kill bears just as they’ve emerged from hibernation with cubs in tow. “There's a reason why we don't hunt any other species during the spring – other than turkeys – because spring is an important time for all species in which they're recovering from the winter,” said Claire Loebs Davis, board president, Washington Wildlife First, a conservation group. After hibernation, Loebs Davis said, bears are on the verge of starvation, making the bears sluggish, slow and easy to kill. “Starvation is forcing them into clearings and in areas where the only food is available – where they are easy for hunters to find and shoot,” she said. Hunting is a vital wildlife management tool. It keeps nature at a healthy balance of which the available habitat can support (carrying capacity). For many wildlife species, hunting also helps to maintain populations at levels compatible with human activity and land use. Wildlife is a renewable natural resource with a surplus and hunters harvest that surplus! This harvestable surplus is never exhausted. Hunting serves as an integral part of preserving native biodiversity and has a legitimate place in modern society. Hunting keeps the Wild wild.Post: 22 November 10:21

But even these 142 miles belong to the wild residents, and they will often use them as they please. This is, of course, the path of least resistance, and they recognize it as such. Make no mistake, the iconic bison herds of Yellowstone are never forced to use these paved miles. They use them simply because they want to, not because they have to. SHCHI – Russian Sauerkraut soup with wild meat and porcini mushrooms. This traditional Russian recipe, like many other recipes of Russian cuisine, may seem very strange. Wild hare hunting Morocco: A Hunter’s Tale from the Wild Plains I still remember the morning air—cool, dry, and laced with the scent of wild thyme. Hare hunting in Morocco isn’t just a sport—it’s a ritual, a test of patience, instinct, and respect for the land. --- 🐇 The Moroccan Hare: Elusive and Legendary The North African hare (Lepus capensis) is a master of deception. Unlike rabbits, hares don’t burrow—they rely on camouflage and speed. Their lean bodies and powerful hind legs make them lightning-fast across rocky terrain. In Morocco, they’re most active at dawn and dusk, preferring solitude and silence. Locals say, “If the hare ran straight, no man could catch it.” And they’re right. These hares thrive in grasslands, vineyards, cork oak forests, and even semi-arid zones. They’re solitary, nocturnal, and notoriously clever. You won’t finPost: 20 November 13:40
Hunting- sport that involves the seeking, pursuing, and killing of wild animals and birds, called game and game birds, primarily in modern times with firearms but also with bow and arrow. In Great Britain and western Europe, hunting is the term employed for the taking of wild animals with the aid of hounds that hunt by scent, whereas the sport of taking small game and game birds with a gun is known as shooting. In the United States and elsewhere, the term hunting is used for both hunting and shooting. In fox hunting, the kill is made by the hounds. Post: 8 July 21:01
Air Rifles Continue Hunting’s Quiet Revolution I’ll never forget my first morning deer hunting on public land near my childhood home in southern Wisconsin, a state with more than 600,000 deer hunters. For nine days a year, the state could field the world’s seventh largest army. Since hunters are required to wear blaze orange during the gun deer season, come November the Wisconsin woods and fields take on the look of a never-ending pumpkin patch—a loud one at that. As I sat in a makeshift stand consisting of a board wedged between two branches about 15 feet off the ground, dawn brought a nearly steady barrage of rifle reports on the order of an Antietam reenactment. Until that time, I had no idea whitetail deer could run that fast. A blast from a .30-30, .270, or .30-06 (all common calibers used for deer hunting) will carry for miles, like gunpowder-induced thunder. The notion of a quiet morning communing with nature in the deer woods was, instead, something more akin to a day at the Post: 15 May 23:23

Catchable Trout Streams The Iowa DNR stocks more than 300,000 catchable-sized rainbow trout in 50 Northeast Iowa streams each year from April through October. More than 600 extra brood trout, weighing over 2 pounds each, are also released in small numbers into each stream. The number of trout stocked into each area varies, depending on length of the stream and how many anglers use the area. These criteria also determine how often each area is stocked. Surveys show there are still good numbers of trout several days after the most recent stocking and throughout the winter. Along with the stocked trout, many areas have good to excellent numbers of wild brown trout that challenge even the best anglers. Brown trout up to 20 inches are possible. Trout streams will receive both announced and unannounced stockings. There has been no change to the frequency of stockings or the number of fish stocked at any of our trout streams.
