Last weekend, I embarked on an unforgettable hunting trip in the heart of California’s wilderness. The journey began at the crack of dawn, with the sun casting a golden hue over the sprawling landscapes of the San Bernardino National Forest. Armed with my gear and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore the rugged terrain. The forest was alive with the sounds of nature, from the rustling leaves to the distant calls of wildlife. As I trekked deeper into the woods, I encountered a variety of game, including black bears and wild pigs. The thrill of the hunt was palpable, and every moment was a testament to the beauty and challenge of the great outdoors. One of the highlights of the trip was spotting a majestic mule deer. With careful precision and respect for the animal, I took my shot. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating, reminding me of the importance of conservation and responsible hunting practices. After a successful day in the field, I set up camp under the starlit

The hunt photographed here was more difficult than most — for reasons beyond the weather and rugged terrain. It was my first trip back to Alaska since my father’s death in March of this year.⁣ ⁣ Dad had joined me in Alaska twice before. The first trip was to fish and explore, the second to hunt caribou above the Arctic Circle. I remember asking him, “Do you want to go caribou hunting?” He shook his head with a quick, “No, not this year.” I pressed, sliding a plane ticket and his caribou tag across the dining room table. Surprised but hesitant—65 years old and a little nervous—he said yes. By June, he was packed and ready for our mid-September departure. That was Dad—quietly determined, but always prepared. We had a great hunt, and he killed a nice bull.⁣ ⁣ On each solo hunt after that, I’d message him with my InReach every few days, updating him on close calls and wild moments. He loved it all. Last year, I wrote from the Alaska Peninsula, “Dad, I thought we had a big earthquake today—

American Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary in polar expedition gear aboard his ship SS Roosevelt, 1908. In the frigid expanse of the Arctic Ocean, where ice stretched endlessly and the sun barely peeked above the horizon, stood one of America’s most daring explorers, Robert Edwin Peary. It was the year 1908, a time when the world's eyes were fixed on the North Pole, an elusive goal that had captivated the imagination of adventurers for centuries. Peary, aboard his sturdy ship, the SS Roosevelt, prepared for what would be his final and most ambitious expedition to reach the top of the world. The SS Roosevelt, named after the then-President Theodore Roosevelt who had supported Peary’s endeavors, was a specially designed vessel built to withstand the crushing grip of pack ice. Its reinforced hull, thick timbers, and powerful engine made it one of the few ships capable of navigating the treacherous waters of the Arctic. But even with such a formidable vessel, the journey ahead was fraugh

Over 300 miles of fencing removed to benefit Nevada antelope For the past decade, volunteers have worked to remove one of the major impediments facing antelope along the western landscape: barbed-wire fencing. And, in the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, over 300 miles of fence has been removed, resulting in about 1,000 square miles of fence-free habitat for the roughly 2,000 antelope in northern Nevada, according to the Nevada Independent. The refuge was established in 1931 with the purchase of over 34,000 acres of the Last Chance Ranch by the Audubon Society and Boone & Crockett Club. Five years later, another 540,000 adjacent acres were combined with the initial 34,000, creating the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge, which provides key habitat for antelope. Antelope are considered important indicators of ecosystem health due to their “migratory habits and far-reaching range,” according to the Nevada Independent. Prior to the 1800s, there were an estimated 40 million throughout Nor

To early humans, hunting was a necessity. The quarry provided not only food from the meat but also clothing from the skins, as well as material for tools from the bones, horns, and hooves. Both archaeological evidence from the past and observation of simpler societies of the present show widespread preoccupation with, and ingenuity in, methods of hunting. These varied, and vary, with the nature of the terrain, the animal hunted, the ingenuity and inventiveness of the hunters, and the materials and technologies at their disposal. Weapons ranged upward in intricacy and effectiveness from sticks and stones used to kill birds and small game to specially shaped clubs and throwing sticks such as the African knobkerry, the trombash of the Upper Nile, and the Australian boomerang; to spears ranging from simple pointed sticks to those with a separate foreshaft, usually barbed, and armed with heads of sharpened stone, bone, or metal. Except in Australia, bows and arrows were universal among earl

Lyme disease: Final trial ends 20-year wait for a vaccine against the tick-borne disease How does the Lyme vaccine work? It targets an "outer surface protein" of the Lyme bacterium called OspA that’s present in the tick’s gut. It’s estimated a tick must feed on someone for about 36 hours before the bacteria spreads to its victim. That delay gives time for antibodies the tick ingests from a vaccinated person’s blood to attack the germs right at the source. In small, early-stage studies, Pfizer and Valneva reported no safety problems and a good immune response. The newest study will test if the vaccine, called VLA15, really protects and is safe. The companies aim to recruit at least 6,000 people in Lyme-prone areas including the northeast US plus Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Sweden.

How to Track a Buck in the Snow Have You Ever Slipped Up on a Deer in the Snow? No doubt about it, the vast majority of whitetail hunting today is done from some type of elevated platform – treestand, tripod or shooting house. That wasn’t always the case. To this day, many northwoods hunters still practice the age-old art of tracking in the snow. So can you, and here are a few tips to help you along the trail. To follow a track you first need to find one, and the more ground you cover the better the odds. Typically, the big woods hunters will drive the backwoods roads before daylight. These are often dirt logging roads, some accessible only by 4WD vehicle, which is what you want. Less Traffic, More Deer You’ll usually find an inverse correlation – the less vehicle traffic, the more deer traffic. If you really want to get away from the crowd, and back where the big bucks roam, unload your ATV and ride the least-accessible roads and trails into the more remote areas. Reading Tracks Once

Review of the Delta Optical Stryker HD 4.5-30 × 56 FFP LRD-1T Scope As an avid hunter with years of experience in the field, I recently decided to upgrade my rifle scope, opting for the Delta Optical Stryker HD 4.5-30 × 56 FFP LRD-1T. It provides fantastic light transmission, which is crucial for dawn and dusk hunts. I found that I could easily identify targets hiding in dense foliage or shaded areas during low-light conditions. Wide Magnification Range: The 4.5-30x magnification range allows for great versatility. Whether I was stalking deer at close range or spotting pronghorns from a distance, this scope handled both scenarios effortlessl
