After deer season closes, rabbit hunting offers up an exciting pastime in the winter months. It's a different rush from the explosion of grouse hunting or the majesty of flushing a mallard at dawn, but rabbit hunting has its particular draws. Rabbit hunting is a new kind of challenge, and a fun one, for many hunters. The burst of brown fur out of the underbrush, followed by the fluid movement of your rifle, spurs adrenaline through your body. Rabbits are plentiful, so, if you find them, you can usually put a few away for future meals of yummy rabbit stew. It's a great way to get novice hunters and youngsters out there, especially in a season that doesn't have too many options for hunting. You don't need a pack of dogs to go rabbit hunting; you can head out on a solo hunt with a single shot and a pocketful of shells and be just as successful. By studying rabbits' defensive strategies, understanding their hiding places, and being patient, you'll be well on your way to bagging a few

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK CLOSES AREAS TO PROTECT ELK Elk that roam the Rocky Mountain National Park will get a reprieve from visitors as park officials began closing areas around the park to prevent intrusion during the fall rut. Targeted areas include roadways and trails in Horseshoe Park, Upper Beaver Meadows, Moraine Park, Harbison Meadow and Holzwarth Meadow, according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald. While 2020 had extended closure times from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. due to the uptick in park visitors, this year, closures will occur from 5 p.m to 10 a.m. and run through Oct. 31. Fishing will still be permitted in the Fall River, Thompson River or Colorado River as posted, but also closed from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. Colorado Parks & Wildlife stated that the “closures are intended to prevent disturbance and harassment of elk during their fall mating period and to enhance visitor elk viewing opportunities.” Stay tuned to goHUNT for further updates.

Shotguns, Bows & Fool Hens by E. Donnall Thomas Jr. Although the termination dust had yet to fall, it was the kind of September day that demands the acknowledgement of the seasons’ passage. Although fresh silvers were still entering the streams, the heart of the fishing season lay behind me. Bull moose were starting to round up their cows, and lines of migrating geese undulated against the crisp, azure sky. Since I’d been in Alaska long enough to know what lay just around the corner, I felt determined to wring as much experience as possible from the outdoors before the sun disappeared and winter seized the North Country in its icy grip. And on that particular day, I meant to do it with my shotgun. If I had nothing else with me as I walked out the door of our remote Kenai Peninsula home, I certainly enjoyed plenty of confidence in my dog. I regarded Skykomish as the best hunting Lab I’ve ever owned, and the passage of three more decades—and a number of very good retrievers—has yet to

When is the right time to restrict your aging hunting dog from the field? With shaking hands and nervous anticipation, I slipped the GPS collar around Winchester’s neck and felt the subtle trembling always present prior to launch. For a moment, I considered leaving the collar in the truck, knowing my big running partner wouldn’t be running strong enough for me to fear him going over the edge of nowhere, one of the defining characteristics of our 12-year relationship. He sat quietly, except for the gentle thumping of his tail on the seat, while I assembled the Winchester 101, 12-gauge, I had also considered leaving in the truck. But, Winchester knew that the gun and the collar meant a hunt, and their absence meant the outing was only a walk. The March morning had dawned clear and cold, suggesting the snow cover in the mountains would present a crust that would support Winchester’s weight. Opportunities for the perfect conditions that once were a luxury had become a necessity for Winc

Will Brantley and Mike Hanback talk long-range glassing, big bucks in Indiana, and pre-season plans in the Realtree Outpost podcast It's late August and still hot, but there's hope in the air, too. Kentucky's squirrel season opened this past weekend, and Tennessee's early three-day "velvet" archery season opened today. With luck, I'll be in a treestand this weekend. We're right on the eve of one of the best times of year, and there's no better time to debut Season 3 of Realtree's Outpost Podcast. This week, I joined fellow blogger and Big Deer TV host Mike Hanback to discuss a variety of pre-season topics. We covered long-range glassing tactics (as detailed here), and discussed why they're still so effective, especially in the early season, and even more so than trail cameras. We discussed plans for this fall, strategies for hunting the drought-stricken West, and personal goals for another season. Then we shifted gears to talk about Josh Honeycutt's recent (and fascinating) story on

Hunters in Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, load deer after a recent hunt. The nationwide hunting season for wild boar and deer, which cause large amounts of agricultural damage, lasts until March 15. SASAYAMA, HYOGO PREF. – When the world rang in 2019, it also prepared to usher in the Year of the Boar. But in Sasayama, a picturesque, historical city of about 42,000 nestled in rural Hyogo Prefecture about an hour by train from Osaka Station, the wild boar is a symbol of pride, part of a famous local dish and a bane to farmers. It's also a highly intelligent, aggressive animal that hunters like Yuji Enso have long pursued and respected. "You have to be able to understand a wild boar's personality," says Enso, who heads a local hunting club. "You also need to thoroughly know the mountain terrain you're tracking the boar through. If you haven't mastered these two basic points, you won't catch them." The hunting season for wild boar and deer began on Nov. 15 and finishes March 15. https://w

Welsh corgi, either of two breeds of working dogs developed to handle cattle. They are similar in appearance but are of different origins. Their resemblance results from crosses between the two breeds. The Cardigan Welsh corgi (see photograph), named for Cardiganshire, can be traced back to dogs brought to Wales by the Celts about 1200 BC. The original type was known as the Bronant and was related to the progenitors of the dachshund. The Pembroke Welsh corgi (see photograph), of Pembrokeshire, is descended from dogs brought to Wales by Flemish weavers about AD 1100. The ancestors of the Pembroke belonged to the group that produced the Keeshond, Pomeranian, and Samoyed. The corgi gained exposure from its association with the royal family of Britain; Queen Elizabeth II has had corgis since her childhood.

What do modern European hunters wear and what hunting techniques are popular? Rule of thumb is: if you're invited and your party consists of more than 2, leave camo at home or in moderation (ie. only a cap or a mask). While loden and waxed cotton remains popular, modern hunting clothing is made to be comfortable, quiet, sturdy, warm and prefferably tick-proof. As for hunting techniques. -Hunting from a blind is the preferred method. Either low near the ground for birds or in a treestand or elevated blind for larger game. -Driven hunt is a popular second. Takes more people, is more expensive, but very spectacular. The driven hunt comes in many varieties, and is subject to many rules, traditions and rituals which vary by region. -Walking flushing hunt is popular in the wide open agricultural areas as well. Requires good dogs. -Stalking has quite a following as well. Although recently, I've heard a scientist say on a symposium: "95% of the hunters believe they belong to the 5% who can

The Parson Russell Terrier: A Hunter's Compact Powerhouse The Parson Russell Terrier (PRT) – don't mistake it for its slightly leggier cousin, the Russell Terrier – is a tenacious, energetic, and purpose-bred hunting machine packed into a relatively small frame. These dogs aren't just pets; they're working partners built for the chase. What Does a Parson Russell Terrier Hunt? Originally developed in England to bolt foxes, the PRT is a versatile hunter. Here's what they excel at: Fox: This is their bread and butter. Their size and fearless nature allow them to enter dens and flush out foxes. Badger: Similar to fox hunting, PRTs can go to ground after badgers. Rats and Other Vermin: Don't underestimate their ratting abilities. They're quick, agile, and have a high prey drive. Squirrels & Small Game: In some regions, they're used to flush squirrels, rabbits, and other small game from cover. Above Ground: Despite excelling underground, they are very good at above ground hunting. W

Within these frameworks, there are even stricter restrictions on issuing official hunting permits. Wild boar hunting is one of the most popular hunt in France. With an ever-growing population, Wild Boar is commonly present in many regions of France. The average weight is around 50 to 80 kg (110 to 176 lbs) and the biggest male adults are from 100 to 200 kg (220 to 440 lbs), the trophy consisting of its tusks (canines and incisors). Mainly hunted on driven hunts, the wild boar is a smart animal, astute enough to cross hunters' line and then escape. With a very good memory and a perfect knowledge of its territory the Wild Boar is a fascinating animal to hunt and hard to catch. Wounded, this animal can be very dangerous and won't hesitate to charge dogs and sometimes human beings. We hunt wild boar from mid-August to end of February. Stalking and driven hunt are the main methods of hunting this animal. This experience is incredibly intense!

With my #SonyA7IV and #Tamron70_180mm f/2.8 lens, I set up for #WildlifePhotography, using ISO auto, f/4, and a shutter speed of 1/1600. The scene was perfect to showcase these incredible birds in action, gliding effortlessly over the lake, searching for fish. #NaturePhotography #BirdWatching #WildlifePerfection #PelicanPhotography #BirdsofGreece #NatureLovers Pelicans are magnificent, large water birds known for their impressive wingspans and unique, expandable throat pouches used for catching fish. Found near coastlines, lakes, and rivers worldwide, pelicans are highly social creatures that often gather in large colonies. The Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos), also known as the white wolf or polar wolf, is a subspecies of grey wolf native to the High Arctic tundra of Canada's Queen Elizabeth Islands, from Melville Island to Ellesmere Island. Unlike some populations that move between tundra and forest regions, Arctic wolves spend their entire lives north of the northern treeline. Their distribution to south is limited to the northern fringes of the Middle Arctic tundra on the southern half of Prince of Wales and Somerset Islands. It is a medium-sized subspecies, distinguished from the northwestern wolf by its smaller size, its whiter colouration, its narrower braincase, and larger carnassials. Since 1930, there has been a progressive reduction in size in Arctic wolf skulls, which is likely the result of wolf-dog hybridization.

Wolf charges Bear, then Bear charges the Wolf. I waited at a Bison carcass from 5am to 9pm for 3 days. Eagles and coyotes had been coming in trying to get a bite, while the Grizzly guarded the carcass, just as its mother taught it to. It would sleep on it and cover it with dirt, and when it seemingly left the scene….it would show back up when other animals tried to feed. On the 3rd morning a lone Wolf 1479 showed up from the Junction Butte pack. It had about 10 minutes to eat before the Grizzly came back. They had an initial stare down. The wolf stood on the carcass and then charged the bear. The bear initially retreated and then decided to charge the wolf. Of course the bear reclaimed the carcass. The rise of the German Empire under Prussian leadership was in full swing during the mid 1800’s. For the first time, the army, which up to this time had been made up chiefly of the Prussian aristocracy and peasantry, was opened up to the middle class. This, combined with sweeping economic and political changes occurring throughout Europe, led to a rise in the status of the middle class within the Empire. With this rise came increased privileges regarding land ownership and hunting. In previous centuries, it was usually only the kings, prices and nobles who had the right to hunt, and they owned vast tracks of land for this purpose. However, as the wealth of middle-class Prussia grew during the 1800’s, merchants, professionals, and other middle-class citizens were able to purchase or lease land for themselves on which, of course, they could hunt. Fulfilling a Need In Germany dense forests blended with open fields and housed all types of feather and fur, including grouse, rabbit, fox, dee

Drought impacts mule deer antler growth in Texas Long-term drought has resulted in massive reverberations across the West. In Texas, it has impacted mule deer, particularly herds in the Panhandle and Trans-Pecos areas. With archery season already underway and general season on-deck in a just a couple of weeks, hunters should be aware that, this year, antler growth is below average even though herd health is still holding steady, according to the Texas Farm Bureau. “I would say the chances of bagging a mule deer would probably be average, but the antler production is going to be quite a bit below average just because we didn’t have any moisture during the antler development time,” said Shawn Gray, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) mule deer and pronghorn program leader. Low fawn production is also linked to “timely rains, and its impact on forages.” Currently, the average mule deer fawn crop in the Trans-Pecos and the Panhandle is 30% to 35%, which Gray acknowledges should s

When the boats are running and the sun is hot, you can still count on getting bites with this efficient finesse rig By now, most bass anglers are familiar with the drop-shot rig. Two decades have passed since the tactic first hit the fishing scene. The drop-shot’s origins are in Japan, where finesse-fishing gurus perfected the technique and later shared it with West Coast anglers facing tough fishing conditions in the clear waters of California. The drop-shot quickly answered the prayers of bass anglers struggling to get a bite. Then the drop-shot moved east, proving its effectiveness through the country’s midsection and into the Great Lakes. It was here that the drop-shot, which allows bottom contact even in the roughest waters, gained steam among smallmouth bass anglers. Personally, I fished the drop-shot rig to over a quarter-million dollars in tournament earnings during my tenure as a competitive angler on Lake Erie in the early 2000s. Then, nothing came close to the rig’s effec

Scientists clone first Arctic wolf What if scientists could bring back extinct or endangered species? Well, that’s exactly what these Chinese researchers are trying to do with the first cloned Arctic wolf. The pup, dubbed Maya 2.0, is now 100 days old and thriving, according to FreeThink. “After two years of painstaking efforts, the Arctic wolf was cloned successfully,” said Mi Jidong, Sinogene Biotechnology’s general manager, during a press conference in Beijing. “It is the first case of its kind in the world.” The project is a collaboration between Sinogene Biotechnology, a Beijing-based biotech, and the polar theme park Harbin Polarland. Researchers used skin cells donated by Maya, an Arctic wolf at Harbin Polarland. From those cells, 136 embryos were created using female dog eggs. Out of those, 85 were transferred into seven beagle surrogates, according to FreeThink. In July, a healthy cloned Arctic wolf was born. While animal cloning isn’t new, it’s not easy. In fact, when S
