WINCHESTER 1300 Turkey Pump Shotgun Review As an avid hunter and shooting enthusiast, I've had the opportunity to use the Winchester 1300 Turkey pump shotgun in various field conditions. This shotgun, chambered in 12x70 with a barrel length of 570 mm, has become a staple in my hunting gear. Here’s my honest assessment, highlighting both the pros and cons. Pros: Accuracy and Precision: One of the standout features of the Winchester 1300 Turkey is its remarkably tight and sharp shot patterns. Whether you are aiming at turkeys or other upland game, this shotgun consistently delivers a concentrated stream of shot, significantly improving your chances of a successful hit. Interchangeable Chokes Winchester 1300: The inclusion of interchangeable chokes is a game-changer for versatility. Depending on the hunting scenario, I can easily switch between different chokes to adjust the spread of shot. This adaptability allows me to tackle various distances and types of game effectively. Ergonomic Design: The overall design of the shotgun is user-friendly. The camouflaged plastic stock not only provides a comfortable grip but also blends seamlessly into the hunting environment. This aesthetic quality is a bonus for those who prioritize concealment while hunting. Lightweight and Balanced: Weighing in at a manageable weight, the Winchester 1300 Turkey is easy to carry around during long hunting days. The well-balanced construction enhances maneuverability, making quick shots feasible when needed. Cons: Plastic Components: While the camouflaged plastic is lightweight, I do have some concerns about its durability over time. Although it holds up relatively well under normal conditions, I occasionally worry about long-term wear and tear, especially in rough environments. Action Noise: The pump action can be somewhat noisy, which might alert game if you're not careful. When you need to make quick follow-up shots, the sound of racking the pump could potentially give away your position. Recoil Management: The recoil from this shotgun can be significant, especially with heavier loads. First-time users might feel a bit overwhelmed by the kick, which could affect accuracy if they’re not accustomed to handling such powerful firearms. Limited Customization Options: While the factory setup works well for many, those looking for a high level of customization may find the options somewhat limited compared to other models in its category. Overall, the Winchester 1300 Turkey pump shotgun is a solid choice for turkey hunters and anyone in need of a reliable shotgun for upland game. Its excellent accuracy, user-friendly design, and adaptability with interchangeable chokes make it a worthwhile investment. However, potential users should weigh the drawbacks, particularly regarding the noise of the action and the recoil. With proper handling and care, this shotgun can be a fantastic companion on your hunting adventures. #Winchester1300 #TurkeyShotgun #12Gauge #PumpA

How can a young lady protect you in case of a polar bear attack? The photos shows KLM flight attendant Joanna Van Duffelen, with a Fairchild Armalite AR–10 combat rifle, dressed in Arctic clothing. Photo 1959. The work of flight attendants and stewards begins long before the departure of the aircraft and does not end immediately after landing. The main thing in this job is not food and drinks, but the safety of passengers in any critical situation. In 1958, KLM launched transarctic flights from Amsterdam to Tokyo with refueling in Anchorage. It was the era of motor aircraft at the dawn of mass passenger aviation. The company paid special attention to the risk of an emergency landing in the Arctic. Each plane carried a set of survival equipment. As you can see, KLM Dutch Airlines flight attendant Joanna is ready for the rigors of life in the Arctic. Ms. Van Duffelen is wearing Arctic survival gear aboard every KLM plane flying the polar route from Amsterdam to Tokyo. The set consists of hundreds of items, including sleeping bags, snow goggles, axes, snow saws, knives, traps, fishing nets, and special rations. The rifle, designed and developed by the Armalite division of Fairchild Engine Corporation and Airplane Corporation, is part of KLM's standard survival equipment. So how can a frail flight attendant survive in the Arctic and protect herself and passengers in the event of a polar bear attack? The Arctic survival kit included: warm down jackets, shared sleeping bags for 4 people, snowshoes, glasses, a 2-burner burner with dishes, a shovel, an axe, a raft, cords, candles, knives, flares, flasks and much more. But the most important thing is the AR-10 carbines in case of a collision with a polar bear :) In total, 4-engine DC-7 aircraft took 400 kg of equipment on each flight.

Bear hunting Hunting bears is a thrilling yet demanding pursuit that requires careful planning and respect for nature. Several methods are employed to increase the chances of a successful hunt. One popular technique is hunting over oats, where hunters attract bears with bait. Another effective method is hunting from a tower, allowing for a broader view and improved accuracy. Utilizing trained Laikas can also enhance tracking, as these dogs are excellent companions in the field. Many hunters choose to hunt during the night, when bears are more active, while hunting over bait remains a common practice. The bear hunting season varies by region, so it's crucial to verify local regulations. When it comes to weaponry, rifles and shotguns are often preferred, with proper caliber selection critical to ensure a humane kill. Safety is paramount; always wear appropriate gear, inform others of your hunting plans, and carry bear spray as a precaution. Remember to adhere to hunting rules: obtain necessary permits, respect wildlife habitats, and follow ethical practices to ensure sustainability. By observing these guidelines, hunters can enjoy the thrill of bear hunting while preserving the environment for future generations. Another integral aspect of bear hunting is understanding bear behavior. Knowledge of a bear's feeding patterns, denning habits, and seasonal movements will significantly increase the likelihood of a successful hunt. Bears are generally most active during dawn and dusk, making these times ripe for hunting. Additionally, being aware of environmental factors such as weather conditions and food availability can influence bear activity and movement. Preparation is key. Scouting the hunting area prior to the season allows hunters to identify signs of bear activity, such as tracks, droppings, and tree rubs. This information is vital for determining optimal bait sites and establishing hunting locations. Utilizing trail cameras can also provide insight into bear behavior and patterns, allowing hunters to plan accordingly. Moreover, teamwork can be beneficial in bear hunting. Hunting with experienced partners enables effective communication and ensures safety in the field. Sharing knowledge and experiences also enriches the hunt. As an age-old tradition, bear hunting can foster camaraderie and a deeper appreciation for nature. Ultimately, responsible bear hunting not only brings excitement and adventure but also emphasizes the importance of conservation. By treating each hunt with care and respect for wildlife, hunters contribute to the sustainable management of bear populations and their habitats.

Hunting is an exciting outdoor activity, but safety must always come first. Whether you’re a seasoned hunter or new to the sport, following key safety measures is critical for an enjoyable experience. Here are some essential safety tips that every hunter should know: 1. Wear the Right Hunting Gear Always wear proper #huntinggear, especially blaze orange clothing to remain visible to other hunters. Protect yourself from the elements with appropriate #huntingclothing, and if you’re hunting from a tree stand, don’t forget your #safetyharness. 2. Be Sure of Your Target and What’s Beyond It One of the golden rules of #huntersafety is knowing your target and what lies beyond it. Whether you're using a bow, rifle, or shotgun, this practice is crucial to avoid accidents. Safe #firearmshandling means keeping your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire. 3. Handle Firearms Safely Treat every weapon as if it’s loaded and always point it in a safe direction. Refresh your #shootingskills at a local #shootingrange to ensure you're fully prepared for the hunt. Using a firearm responsibly is the foundation of #huntersafety. 4. Follow Local Hunting Regulations Each state has specific #huntingregulations. Ensure you're aware of local laws regarding permits, hunting zones, and seasons to promote safe and ethical hunting. This also helps with sustainable #wildlifemanagement. 5. Hunt with a Partner It’s always safer to hunt with a buddy. Having someone with you in case of an emergency can be a lifesaver. If you prefer solo hunts, share your #huntingplan with a friend or family member and carry a communication device, such as a two-way radio. 6. Monitor Weather Conditions Before heading out, check the weather forecast and pack suitable #huntinggear. Avoid hunting in extreme conditions like thunderstorms or high winds, which can increase the risk of accidents. 7. Use Tree Stands Safely When using a #treestand, always inspect it before climbing. Wear a #fallarrestsystem and follow manufacturer guidelines to minimize the risk of falls. 8. Carry a First Aid Kit A #firstaidkit is a must-have in every hunter’s backpack. Be prepared to handle minor injuries or more serious situations, especially when hunting in remote areas far from medical assistance. 9. Respect Wildlife and the Environment Ethical hunting practices include respecting #wildliferegulations and minimizing your impact on nature. Follow all guidelines, stay on trails, avoid littering, and always track your prey responsibly. 10. Stay Physically and Mentally Prepared Hunting can be physically demanding, so maintaining fitness is key. Staying mentally sharp is equally important. Avoid distractions like alcohol or drugs, which can impair your judgment in the field. By following these #huntingsafety tips, you’ll ensure a rewarding, safe experience while hunting. Safety is a responsibility that every hunter must embrace and pass on to future generations.

Last weekend, I embarked on an unforgettable hunting trip in the heart of California’s wilderness. The journey began at the crack of dawn, with the sun casting a golden hue over the sprawling landscapes of the San Bernardino National Forest. Armed with my gear and a sense of adventure, I set out to explore the rugged terrain. The forest was alive with the sounds of nature, from the rustling leaves to the distant calls of wildlife. As I trekked deeper into the woods, I encountered a variety of game, including black bears and wild pigs. The thrill of the hunt was palpable, and every moment was a testament to the beauty and challenge of the great outdoors. One of the highlights of the trip was spotting a majestic mule deer. With careful precision and respect for the animal, I took my shot. The experience was both humbling and exhilarating, reminding me of the importance of conservation and responsible hunting practices. After a successful day in the field, I set up camp under the starlit sky. The camaraderie with fellow hunters, sharing stories and laughter around the campfire, made the trip even more special. We cooked our catch and enjoyed a hearty meal, celebrating the day’s achievements. This hunting trip in California was more than just a pursuit of game; it was a journey of connection with nature and a reminder of the wild beauty that exists just beyond our everyday lives. Can’t wait for the next adventure! 🏞️🦌 #Hunting #California #OutdoorAdventure #Wildlife #NatureLovers #Conservation

Stylish Home Interiors Featuring Hunting Trophies: Bears, Foxes, Deer, and Iconic African Wildlife

Transforming your home into a stylish haven can take on a unique twist

Stylish Home Interiors Featuring Hunting Trophies: Bears, Foxes, Deer, and Iconic African Wildlife Transforming your home into a stylish haven can take on a unique twist when you incorporate hunting trophies. Character pieces like bears, foxes, deer, and famous African animals can add a striking visual element while paying homage to nature and the art of wildlife conservation. First, consider the placement of your trophies. A grand bear mount above a stone fireplace can create a bold centerpiece, making the living room feel both rustic and luxurious. Surround it with a palette of warm browns, deep greens, and soft neutrals to enhance the natural aesthetic. You might also think about introducing a variety of textures through rustic wooden furniture and soft fabrics, like leather or wool, to create a cozy atmosphere. In a more eclectic setting, fox mounts can add a whimsical touch. Their playful nature can shine through when displayed alongside vintage hunting gear or framed wildlife art. This juxtaposition of historic and contemporary elements invites conversation and reflects the owner's passion for the outdoors. The graceful presence of a deer mount can bring an air of elegance to a hallway or entryway. Choose a stylish frame and pair it with complementary decor, such as mounted antlers or soft lighting, to highlight the trophy beautifully. This can create an inviting first impression for guests while paying tribute to the beauty of wildlife. For a taste of Africa, consider showcasing mounted heads of iconic animals like a lion, zebra, or kudu. These pieces can serve as breathtaking focal points in a room and can be paired with ethnic-inspired decor, such as woven textiles, tribal art, and natural materials, to establish a cohesive theme that reflects the rich cultures of the African continent. Incorporating hunting trophies into your home is not just about decoration; it is also about storytelling. Each piece has a history and allows for the sharing of adventures and respect for wildlife. By blending these trophies with a thoughtful interior design approach, you create a stylish, meaningful, and unique living space that celebrates both nature and your personal journey. Ultimately, a stylish interior that features hunting trophies can be a testament to your outdoor pursuits while ensuring that your home remains warm, inviting, and deeply personal.

Catch and Cook: Delicious Pike Recipe Are you a fishing enthusiast or just love trying out new recipes? If yes, then this TikTok video is perfect for you! Today, we're going to show you how to catch and cook a delicious pike. First things first, let's talk about the equipment you need for fishing pike. You'll need a sturdy rod, a reliable reel, and some lures that mimic small fish. Pike are aggressive predators, so they're more likely to bite on lures that look like their prey. Once you have your gear ready, it's time to head out to the water. Look for areas with plenty of vegetation, as pike tend to hide in these spots. Cast your line and wait patiently for a bite. When you feel a tug, reel in quickly and steadily to ensure you don't lose your catch.

What a great feeling to finally be underway as the ferry leaves Wellington and another hunting South Island adventure starts. After a four hour drive I arrived at Berridale station where I met my hunting companion for the week, Jonesy. Gear was transferred to his truck and we were off on the two hour drive to the chopper hanger. We’d had a call from the pilot saying not to waste any time getting there as a big Nor ‘wester was coming in. After a very bumpy flight we were soon heading downhill to a beautiful little basin, which was to be home for the next week, or so we thought. The location meant a 20 minute climb each morning but in this sort of country camping on the open tops leaves you very exposed to strong winds.

The 5 Best Thermal Monoculars of 2024 Everybody wants to know what goes bump in the night, even if it doesn’t bump and even if it’s not nighttime. Happily, thermal monoculars, a new and energetic category of gear, often identify what used to be invisible. They can help you see everything from human intruders on the other side of a fence, to coyotes and raccoons crouching in the dark, to a problematic wire in a household electrical outlet. We’re talking about monoculars, rangefinders, and cameras that use temperature variations, rather than visible light, to form images that can be captured as photographs or videos, or simply delivered to your eye to answer that ancient question: what’s out there? I’ve used this new class of “optics” over the past year to find newborn calves in a deadly blizzard, to find my ice-fishing buddies in the fog, to detect hidden electrical problems that might burn my house down, to hunt coyotes at midnight, and to finally even the odds on crop-raiding feral hogs. You could also use them to recover wounded game where it’s legal. Here are my picks for the best thermal monoculars, which range from flashlight-looking monoculars to small thermal viewers that connect to smartphones. Best Overall: Leica Calonox View Best Rangefinding: Pulsar Axion 2 LRF XG35 Best Entry-Level: FLIR Scout TKx Best Phone-Enabled: Xinfrared T2 Pro Best for Hunting: Zeiss DTI 3/35 How I Tested the Best Thermal Monoculars The field includes brand-new units that are just hitting the market this winter, others that I’ve tested over the course of the past year, and a few oddballs. My intention wasn’t to test every unit on the market, but rather handle a representative sample of products in order to provide a performance baseline. Also note that we’re not covering thermal rifle scopes in this particular roundup. I started by measuring attributes, assessing how far each thermal monocular could effectively detect a standard chemical hand warmer in the dark. I then used each unit on midnight-shift rounds of a calving operation to detect cows that wander away from the herd at night to give birth. The thermal mapping capability of these viewers can even show which cows are close to calving based on rising abdominal temperature. I also used the thermals on a series of sub-zero winter coyote and cottontail hunts to test their capabilities in the field and assess how their batteries would hold up to extreme cold. I enlisted the help of a digital (and thermal) native, Kaden Fossum, who independently tested all the units over the course of the fall and winter from his home in southeast Montana. Fossum measured the range, thermal sensitivity, and field-worthiness of each unit over several weeks of coyote hunting. Most of the videos and images that accompany each product review is from Fossum’s field work. Both Fossum and I assessed each unit’s imagery, both the type and utility of the palettes available and the resolution of the images. And we scored each unit’s ease of use and ergonomics.

This has happened multiple times now! Here is the story👇 Ready for a once in a lifetime hunting story? One of our followers, Brock Maksymiw, from Saskatchewan, just sent us these photos with his story. He first got this buck on camera back on 11/22 and thought his camera had a glitch. It wasn't until 11/24 when it was confirmed this buck actually had another bucks head attached to it! Brock quickly grabbed his gear and headed out to the property where the pictures were taken. Sure enough after a short while, he saw it and fired, but missed! As Brock wrote, his nerves got the best of him. However, Brock came back a few hours later and saw the same buck in a different spot, and got him.

They are incredibly accurate, highly aerodynamic, and boast superb terminal performance. They are the finest killing projectiles the world has ever known; that’s a great thing for us as hunters. Bullet Mold What Kills Game? To effectively and cleanly kill a big-game animal, a bullet needs to expand reliably and penetrate deeply no matter what it encounters en route. That’s the crux of bullet performance. If a bullet fragments to bits upon impact, or stops upon encountering bone, it likely won’t penetrate deeply enough to accomplish a clean kill. Or if it fails to expand, it may simply pencil through, doing minimal damage along the way and failing to accomplish a clean kill. Here’s a short anatomy-of-a-kill lesson for you: There are three ways a bullet will cause rapid and mostly painless death: 1: Collapse the lungs, causing a dearth of oxygen to the brain. 2: Cause massive damage to the circulatory system including the heart, arteries, and veins, leading to catastrophic loss of blood and blood pressure. 3: Disrupt or destroy the central nervous system, which consists of the brain and spinal column.* Of the three, number one—the lungs—offers the biggest target, results in the fastest death, and usually comes with the side benefit of accomplishing number 2 en-route. When a bullet passes through the lungs they collapse almost instantly. Arteries and veins, and sometimes the heart, are destroyed as well. Within seconds the brain is starved of oxygen and blood pressure plummets. The animal literally blacks out and tips over, unconscious even before it is dead. This is the ideal, painless-as-possible death that we as ethical hunters should strive for every time we take a shot.

Making the Traditional Bow Switch

Over the past few years, traditional archer

Making the Traditional Bow Switch Trading your compound bow for a recurve adds a whole new twist to your bowhunting experience Over the past few years, traditional archery has surged in popularity among recreational shooters and bowhunters alike. For many, making the switch from a compound to a recurve or long bow is a way to increase the challenge of a hunt; for others, it’s a way to embrace the simplicity of traditional archery. Choosing to bowhunt with traditional gear not only requires hunters to get closer to game but also to spend a significant amount of time practicing with their equipment to become proficient. When it comes to equipment selection and shooting style, there are many differences between a stick bow and a wheel bow that can be confusing for traditional newcomers. So, I recruited the help of long-time traditional bowhunter Travis “T-Bone” Turner to help you understand where to get started with traditional archery. Select a Bow If you think there are a lot of options in the compound market, you’re in for a surprise when it comes to selecting a traditional bow. First, you’ll have to choose between a manufacturer’s bow and a hand-made model. Many manufacturers produce traditional bows on a large scale, but bowyers all across the country make beautiful, hand-crafted recurves, long bows and self-bows. It can be tempting to shell out for a beautiful hand-made bow, but there are plenty of fantastic options from manufacturers for a more affordable price. You’ll also need to decide between a one-piece bow and a take-down bow, though Turner recommends a take-down style recurve for new traditional archers. Take-downs provide more versatility because they allow you to swap out limbs. You’ll also need to consider the length of the bow. “I’d suggest a guy go with a little bit longer bow,” Turner says. “Something that’s 64 or 66 inches, the string won’t be so tight on your fingers and they’re easier to aim.” Choose a Draw Weight Selecting your new bow’s draw weight can be one of the most difficult decisions when making the jump to traditional archery. Most compound shooters today are pulling 65 to 70 pounds but, after let-off, are typically holding less than 20 pounds at full draw. With a traditional bow, that poundage builds as the bow is drawn, leaving the shooter holding the most weight at full draw. Turner says one of the biggest mistakes new traditional archers make is choosing a bow with a draw weight that’s too heavy. Go for a 35- to 40-pound draw weight starting out, and adjust that according to your own needs. “Don’t think you have to be a macho man,” Turner says. “A slow hit is better than a fast miss.” Note, too, that draw weight is measured differently for traditional bows. The weight-rating of a traditional bow is measured when the bow is drawn to 28 inches. As the draw length changes, the bow will gain or lose roughly 3 pounds per inch. For example: If you start out with a 40-pound bow and you have a draw length of 30 inches, you would actually be pulling about 46 pounds. Choose a bow with a comfortable draw weight that will help you develop good form and accuracy. This is also where choosing a take-down model comes in handy, because you always have the option to change limbs as you build your strength – without the added cost of buying a second bow. Develop a Style Once you have your bow, you need to select a shooting style. Some archers use the split-finger method, placing their index finger above the arrow, and the middle and ring fingers below it. The alternative is the three-under method, where the index, middle, and ring finger draw the string from below the arrow. Choosing which style is right for you really comes down to personal preference. Try both and see what feels right. Shooting with split fingers is generally used for the instinctive shooting method, while three-under puts your eye closer to the arrow, allowing you to look down the arrow at full draw. “For compound shooters who are used to having a pin to aim, three-under is usually easier since you use the tip of your arrow as a sight reference,” Turner says. “It used to be about a 50/50 split between the two, but today there seems to be more people shooting three under.” Add a Draw Check Unlike a compound bow, traditional bows don’t have a back wall or draw stops. Because variation in draw length directly affects the energy a bow will produce, it’s critical to develop a consistent draw. That’s where draw checks come in handy. They provide a reference that allows you to draw to the same length every time. The most common type of draw check is a clicker. This small accessory consists of a piece of cord tied between the bow string and a metal tab on the upper limb of your bow. When you reach the desired draw length, the cord tightens and causes the tab to click. Using a clicker will help with consistency, but hunting with one is a topic of debate. Some folks dislike the noise in a hunting situation, but Turner finds them useful. “Clickers are a great way to make sure your shot is consistent,” Turner says. “In a hunting situation when the adrenaline gets pumping, it can be easy to over-draw, so I think clickers are a good idea.” Regardless of how you do so, establish a consistent anchor point. Implement a knuckle on the jaw bone or ear lobe, a thumb along the jaw line, or some other consistency." Tune the Arrow to the Bow Shooting an arrow with the correct spine is important for both compound and traditional setups. With a compound, however, there’s more room for adjustment. “With a compound, you can’t have too stiff of a spine, in my opinion,” Turner says. “With a traditional bow, you need that arrow to flex so it bends around the riser of the bow.” When setting up a traditional bow, it’s important to remember that you don’t tune the bow to the arrow, as is commonly done with a compound. Instead, you tune the arrow to the bow. There are a couple different ways to do this. “I’m a big fan of heavy FOC,” says Turner, referring to the arrow’s front-of-center, or the percentage of the arrow’s weight that’s in the front half of the arrow. “By adjusting the FOC by changing the arrow’s point weight, you can change its spine. Starting with a long arrow and cutting it down a little at a time is another way I tune my arrow to get good arrow flight.” When tuning an arrow, remember that increasing point weight – the FOC – will weaken the spine of the arrow; shortening the arrow shaft will make it stiffer. To evaluate arrow flight, tune the bare shafts and paper tune until you get a perfectly flying arrow. If your arrows aren’t flying straight, you’re going to lose energy and penetration. Adjust arrow length and point weight until you get it right, and don’t worry what arrow weight or point weight you end up with. Get Closer There are a lot of things to consider when making the change from a compound to traditional bow, and you’ll learn as you go. Just make sure to ramp up the frequency of your practice sessions, since consistent accuracy will be more challenging to achieve than with your compound. “The standard distance for target practice seems to be 20 yards, but with a traditional bow, don’t be afraid to move up to 10 or 15 yards when you’re first starting out,” Turner says. He also notes that you’ll want a glove or tab for your string hand. “Try out several different gloves and tabs to find what you like best. If you go with a glove, buy a size smaller than you would typically wear because that leather will stretch, and a sloppy glove can make it hard to get a good release.” When it comes to working on your shooting form, try drawing your recurve in front of the mirror or camera to ensure the bow string stays straight up and down. A lot of people will turn their hand out as they draw, making the string curve. And remember: Perfect form isn’t as important as consistent form.

5 Snow Goose Stops You’ve Never Tried Chasing spring snow geese is one of the fastest growing pursuits in hunting, and with good reason. The most obvious of its attractions are the tens of millions of birds that string out from Texas to the Canadian tundra and from the coast of California to the Eastern Shore. But as the spring migration has ballooned, so has the hunting competition. Meanwhile, it takes plenty of gear and cash to get into the game: e-callers, massive decoy rigs, pallets of ammunition and gasoline for finding fresh birds for the next day’s flight. You might wonder why we go to the trouble. But if you spend one day under twisting white flocks with 10 shotgun shells in an extension magazine before you run it to the plug again and again, you’ll understand. Arkansas, Missouri and South Dakota are the hotbeds for chasing the reverse migration, but a few places are still devoid of big crowds, no matter if you’re a do-it-yourself or pay-to-play hunter. Southern Illinois Sean Herrick’s passion for white geese runs deep. He was one of the first outfitters to plant roots near Carlyle Lake, which can host up to 1 million snows during the height of the migration. He bought a couple old shipping containers and sank them into the ground, fabricating slick roll-cages to hide peeping hunters from white birds. It’s one of the most comfortable hunts you can have for snows (much better than lying in the Arkansas mud), and Herrick is far removed from freelancers. “We are away from the ring of fire, where birds fly over spread after spread,” Herrick says. “By the time they get to us, they think they are safe.” He has dug up and re-sunk pits multiple times to get on the best flight lines, and if the hatch was good and the weather is right, you will kill juvies all day. Plus, he runs permanent spreads, so there’s no decoy pickup after grinding all day. My friends and I had a banger couple of days with Herrick’s outfit a few years ago in February with the sun shining and a south wind blowing. The action was constant by snow goose standards (a few flocks every hour), and our numbers were in the 70s and 80s each day. That kind of success depends on myriad factors, but if the birds are flying, it’s a good bet Herrick will get plenty in killing range. North Dakota Scott Butz, the creator of Reel Wings, is so white-bird-obsessed that he keeps in contact with Canadian biologists about the hatch every spring and summer so he knows what to expect come fall and spring. Butz chases snows from Saskatchewan to Arkansas and back north in spring. North Dakota can be phenomenal, he says, but has seen tough times the past few years. “If there’s no snow line, they just blow through here in 7 to 10 days, right on into Canada,” Butz says. “You used to see snows here into early April. Now it’s pretty much over by the end of February.” You might wonder why we go to the trouble. But if you spend one day under twisting white flocks with 10 shotgun shells in an extension magazine before you run it to the plug again and again, you’ll understand. Snows can be found from Valley City to Bismarck, but success in North Dakota requires different tactics. Butz doesn’t run Vortex machines and complements his e-caller – if he’s using one – with a mouth call. “In every flock, there’s a dominant bird, and that’s why I use a mouth call,” he says. “Snow geese hear so well and pick up on different frequencies. Using that mouth call gets them in tight. I’m talking 15 to 20 yards.” Access in North Dakota is fantastic. If a field isn’t posted, you have permission to hunt. But that can work against you, too, and that’s why Butz always calls the landowner, because you might arrive the next morning to find the farmer working the field. Also, with easy access comes competition. If there’s a big feed, you can bet multiple hunters or outfitters want that spot. Butz suggested working with other hunters if they are scouting the same piece of real estate. “If someone else shows up, they can join us,” Butz says. “What’s the point of having two spreads in the same field and blowing the whole deal for everyone?” If you can’t play nice with others, find a field between the feed and the roost, or a spot you think birds will likely fly over based on the wind and weather. Don’t be afraid to be different. Butz has based his entire snow goose career on that, and the proof is in the piles. “A typical outfitter is going to run a 1,200-decoy spread with a couple of Vortex machines and blare the e-caller all day,” he says “You need to go small with quality decoys or get your buddies together and get a massive 3,000- to 5,000-decoy spread.” Saskatchewan Sometimes, Saskatchewan hunters call snows “summer geese” because you can hunt snows almost into summer there. Even the adults become more susceptible when they cross into Canada. Veteran snow guide Dusty Brown says it’s like hunting fresh birds during fall because the geese get obsessed with breeding and feeding, and the pressure they’ve experienced during fall and spring goes out the window. They basically become new birds. Even during poor-hatch years with few juvies, the hunting in Saskatchewan can be lights out. A few outfitters specialize in spring snows up North (swiftriveroutfitters.com is a good one), and the hunts can be phenomenal, especially as you get closer to the breeding grounds and birds are feeding hard every morning. Don’t be afraid to go it alone in Saskatchewan, either. There are ample freelance opportunities, but like anything worthwhile, it’s hard work. You will put birds to bed every night, go in and set up for the morning and tear down every afternoon – unless you get on a burner field the geese just can’t ignore. California The Sacramento Valley and Northeastern Zone can provide one of the most unique goose hunts of your life. “We’re not directly going after snow geese, but our spread looks like it,” says Rocque Merlo of merlowaterfowl.com. “We use a couple hundred specklebelly decoys and another 400 to 700 snows.” Merlo’s outfit chases snows in fall (you can kill 20 a day, plus 10 specklebellies), but you can hunt snows until March in the Northeastern Zone and keep on going north through eastern Oregon and Washington if you have the time and ammo. “The access is extremely tough,” Merlo says of his spots in Sacramento Valley. “Guides have most everything locked up, but a lot of guys are heading to the northeast. You can still knock on doors and get access up there.” Maryland and Delaware In the early 1990s, Tommy Marvel began to see greater snow geese push west of Route 301, which runs through Kent County, Maryland, and into Delaware “It used to be greaters would roost on Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, and we targeted them in cornfields,” says Marvel, who owns Chesapeake Guide Service (chesapeakeguideservice.com). “The biggest concentrations of snows are now farther south at Prime Hook NWR.” Delaware and Maryland are best, but Marvel says New York is on the rise. Greaters typically don’t sit on one roost. They use farm ponds and other small waters, and Marvel has seen them on Chesapeake Bay, too. His outfit hunts primarily fields with 600 to 1,000 full-bodies or 1,800 to 2,000 silo socks. Near the end of the season (typically February or March), when birds have been shot out of the fields, Marvel turns his attention to small roosts and loafs. “We don’t do it until we have to, but there’s a point when they just won’t come to decoys in a field, so we get set up around 9 a.m. and shoot them as they come back to water.”

The Right Way to Clean and Store Your Hunting Rifle

Deer season is over

The Right Way to Clean and Store Your Hunting Rifle Properly caring for your deer gun’s barrel and action ensures it’ll be ready to go again next fall Deer season is over, and now is the perfect time to give your rifle a thorough annual cleaning. Store your gun in a secure and rust-free environment and it will be in good working order when you break it out for a range session in a few months. Gun-Cleaning Gear To do the job right, you need to secure your rifle horizontally in a vise. A vise attached to a workbench at your house will work fine. Or you can purchase a portable gun vise from a company that specializes in firearms-cleaning accessories. Spend $40 or more for a universal gun-cleaning kit, which will include a three-piece bore rod and an assortment of jags, brushes, patches, and other accessories for cleaning not only your bolt-action, but also other handguns and long guns that you own. Also, and this is important, purchase a bore guide, which will protect the bore and action of your rifle by properly aligning the cleaning rod as you work. You’ll need a quality solvent like Hoppe’s No. 9 for swabbing the bore, and a gun oil like Break Free CLP (best I’ve used for preventing rust) for wiping down the exterior of your rifle. 5 Steps to a Shiny Bore Fit the cleaning rod with a jag of the proper caliber, and insert a clean patch into the jag’s slot. Soak the patch in bore solvent. Run the rod and wet patch through the bore guide and down the barrel, always working from breech to muzzle, the same way a bullet travels. Run a dry patch through the bore and look to see how dirty it is when the patch comes out the muzzle. I’m going out on a limb and saying that patch will be pretty black with carbon because you probably haven’t done a deep bore clean in a while. Run one or two more soaked patches through the bore. Remove the jag, screw on a bronze brush of the correct caliber and soak it in solvent. Push the brush through the bore and out the muzzle, then pull it back until it exits the chamber. Repeat brushing 10 times. Remove brush, go back to the jag and run two or three more soaked patches through the bore. Loosen the rifle in the vise, tilt the muzzle slightly down to keep solvent from running back into the action and re-tighten. Allow the bore to soak for 30 minutes to an hour. After the soak, run dry patches through the bore until the last patch out is pure white, and the bore is shiny. Rifle Storage Wipe down the action, trigger guard, scope, barrel, and all exterior metalwork of the rifle with a light coat of gun oil. When I plan to store a rifle for two months or more, I run one last patch dabbed with a light coat of oil into the bore to prevent rust. To further avoid rust, firearms should be stored in an environment that stays around 70 degrees F year-round with humidity of 50 to 55 percent. It is best to lock all your guns and ammunition in a gun safe. At the very least, secure firearms and ammo in a closet or room that you lock tight. Affix trigger or cable locks to all guns for added security and peace of mind. When you break out your rifle for a practice session before next deer season, run a dry patch through the bore to remove trace oil. Then get to shooting. I think you’ll be impressed at how much tighter your groups are from the squeaky-clean barrel.

These are one of the most important hunting tips for starters. Stealth and Silence Always be as quiet as you possibly can. Even the faintest twig, branch, clothing and equipment rattling will alert the animals. Dress appropriately, gear up lightly, and don’t use velcro clothing or anything that would make a lot of noise. Navigating Your Surroundings Become acquainted and scout out the hunting area. Depending on which game animals you hunt, it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the perimeter, and use landmarks so you won’t get lost. Patience Goes a Long Way Many hunters don’t have the patience to acquire a clean shot. There’s a lot of waiting, but it pays off in the end when a deer appears on your scope. Persistence is key. Mind Your Scent Animals have heightened senses, and it’s a good idea to become as odorless as possible. There are many chemicals and cosmetic products that mask your scents. That means no smoking, no alcohol, and no smelly food. The wind factor is also crucial because if the wind direction is at your back, there’s a bigger chance that the game might catch your scent and run away. Move As Little as Possible It sounds impossible, but it’s very important. After scouting the area, you need to time and plan your movement if you want to get a good shot at your target. Move as slow and as little as you possibly can. Insect Repellent Is Important This is a very overlooked tip. Mosquitoes, wasps, and other insects can be very annoying and will surely break your concentration and focus.

By Frank Gentile, Hopewell, N.Y. It was October 2011, and I was back in my Chevy Tahoe on my way to another hunt. This time, instead of my son, I was traveling with my hunting buddies. My buddies and I had been on plenty of trips together before but never to Texas! Between the four of us and gear for six (two of our team opted to fly from New York to San Antonio), every single spare inch of space in the truck had been utilized. With each of us taking turns driving, we made it to Texas in about 20 hours. We got dinner and hotel rooms in Texarkana, and were back on the road early the next morning. With a day to spare before we were due at our hunting camp in Hondo, Texas, we headed south with plans to enjoy the city of San Antonio along the way. In San Antonio, we explored the Alamo, the River Walk and the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum. What a great city! Our first order of business after arriving at the camp the next morning was to make sure that our rifles were on target. With that complete, we were off to our first afternoon hunt. At this camp, there was one guide for every hunter, and your guide stayed out with you the entire time. The treestands were made of fiberglass and completely enclosed. This was exciting. It was also my first time hunting whitetails on active feeders. The feeders were located about 100 yards directly in front of my treestand, and I had about 150 yards to my left and right of clear shooting. When the feeders went off, they reminded me of the ringing of a dinner bell; I never in my life saw so many deer in front of me at one time! The guide was very clear in designating what I could and couldn’t shoot: I was paid up for a deer in the 130- to 140-class range. Despite my excitement over seeing all of those deer in one place, the right deer didn’t show. It was not the day for my shot. Dinner back at the camp was great, but breakfast came very early, so a good night’s sleep was my plan. I was back in the same stand the next morning. It was early and still pretty dark. I thought I had seen some movement but couldn’t see exactly what it was. As the day woke up, the feeder went off, and once again, deer were everywhere! I’ve still never seen so much horn in one place! About 150 yards to my right was a lonely buck. He was feeding and getting closer. As I picked up my binocular to get a closer look, my guide remarked, “Nice deer.” As I studied him, I noticed some movement on the ground, and to my surprise, feeding right next to the deer was a raccoon. The raccoon fed and moved closer to the buck, and at this point, I didn’t care about the feeder or the dozen or so deer to my left. I was completely focused on this odd duo. The deer kept cutting the distance, as did the raccoon, and was about 50 yards away—just as I was thinking what a nice trophy he would be—when the big let-down came from my guide: “I think he’s over 140.” My eyes still didn’t waver from those two animals. Now they were coming towards the treestand, stopping here and there to eat. Even my guide couldn’t get over how content these two animals were in each other’s presence. Knowing that this may not be the one for me due to his size, my eyes roamed over the remaining deer at the feeder. Two nice looking bucks were nearby, but were obviously out of my class—they were at least in the 200-inch range, too big for my wallet. I turned over to the guide, who had now taken a photo of the deer with his “rangefinder-camcorder-cell phone” to send to his foreman in hopes of getting the go-ahead for a shot. I couldn’t believe how detailed the rack looked on this 4-inch screen. I didn’t want to let this one get away, and I soon found out that I didn’t have to. My guide received the green light from his foreman, and tapped me on my shoulder to take the deer. By now, the deer had started to move farther away, about 140 yards, still feeding and walking. My heart was pounding, and once again doing double-time. I had the buck in my scope, and when he turned broadside to look at the raccoon I took the shot. He went down as if hit by a locomotive. It is amazing what a 150-grain bullet can do. Back at camp, it was measuring time. It turns out the guide was spot-on and was right to be cautious. The big 8-point buck measured 139⅝ inches.

Beretta Ultralight: Featherweight Power for Upland Bird Hunters For the upland bird hunter, every ounce counts. Hours spent traversing fields and forests demand a shotgun that won't weigh you down. Enter the Beretta Ultralight, a 12-gauge (and occasionally 20-gauge) that redefines "carry gun" without sacrificing the performance expected from a Beretta. Why the Ultralight Stands Out: Reduced Weight, Real Impact: The Ultralight achieves its name through a meticulously engineered alloy receiver. This shaves significant weight compared to steel-framed shotguns, typically bringing the overall weight to around 6.6 pounds for a 12-gauge. This translates to less fatigue during long hunts, allowing for quicker shouldering and improved accuracy. Beretta Reliability: Don't mistake lightness for fragility. The Ultralight is still a Beretta, built with the company's renowned attention to detail and durable components. The proven Beretta action ensures reliable cycling, even in demanding field conditions. Upland Optimized: The Ultralight often features classic upland configurations: a slim forend for comfortable carry, a straight English-style stock for quick pointing, and typically shorter barrel lengths (26-28 inches) for maneuverability in dense cover. Responsive Handling: The combination of reduced weight and balanced design creates a shotgun that feels incredibly lively in the hands. This responsiveness is crucial for flushing birds, enabling quick target acquisition and accurate shots. Aesthetic Appeal: Beyond performance, the Ultralight boasts classic Beretta styling. Expect tastefully engraved receivers and well-figured walnut stocks that add to the pride of ownership. Who is it for? The Beretta Ultralight is ideal for: Dedicated Upland Hunters: Those who prioritize a lightweight shotgun for all-day comfort. Hunters Covering Significant Ground: If your hunts involve extensive walking, the Ultralight will be a welcome companion. Hunters Seeking a Classic, Refined Shotgun: Appreciate the traditional look and feel of a well-crafted over-under. Things to Consider: Recoil: While manageable, the lighter weight can result in slightly more felt recoil, especially with heavier loads. Consider using appropriate loads for your target species. Price: Beretta quality comes at a price. The Ultralight is an investment, but one that delivers long-term value. Conclusion: The Beretta Ultralight is more than just a lightweight shotgun; it's a carefully engineered tool designed to enhance the upland bird hunting experience. Its combination of weight reduction, Beretta reliability, and responsive handling makes it a top choice for hunters who demand the best. If you value comfort and performance in the field, the Ultralight deserves serious consideration. https://m.uh.app/news/finding-your-perfect-beretta-shotgun-the-hunters-guide-to-the-best_UkVv8O3EEe-tm0W5Zik9PQ

Will Brantley and Mike Hanback talk long-range glassing, big bucks in Indiana, and pre-season plans in the Realtree Outpost podcast It's late August and still hot, but there's hope in the air, too. Kentucky's squirrel season opened this past weekend, and Tennessee's early three-day "velvet" archery season opened today. With luck, I'll be in a treestand this weekend. We're right on the eve of one of the best times of year, and there's no better time to debut Season 3 of Realtree's Outpost Podcast. This week, I joined fellow blogger and Big Deer TV host Mike Hanback to discuss a variety of pre-season topics. We covered long-range glassing tactics (as detailed here), and discussed why they're still so effective, especially in the early season, and even more so than trail cameras. We discussed plans for this fall, strategies for hunting the drought-stricken West, and personal goals for another season. Then we shifted gears to talk about Josh Honeycutt's recent (and fascinating) story on the record buck that hid in a Pennsylvania garage for 60 years, and Hanback's take on why Indiana is the new top big-buck state in the country. If you're excited about deer season, you don't want to miss this one.

Hunting Periods and Permits in SMÅLAND: A Detailed Look at Game Movement Throughout the Year, Seasonal Limits, and How to Apply for a Hunting License in the Area Hunting in Småland offers diverse opportunities across different seasons, with regulated periods for various game species. Understanding the hunting calendar, regional rules, and license requirements ensures a legal and successful hunt. This article covers Småland’s hunting seasons, restrictions, best periods for game activity, and how to obtain permits. 1. Hunting Seasons and Regional Regulations in Småland Småland’s hunting seasons are determined by Swedish environmental laws, which adjust for local wildlife behavior and conservation needs. The main hunting periods include: Roe deer: August through January Moose: September through January (dates vary by zone) Wild boar: Year-round hunting allowed but with restrictions Small game (hare, grouse): August through February Climate and dense forests influence animal activity, leading to earlier closures during harsh winters. Småland differs from neighboring regions such as Skåne, which has longer wild boar seasons, and Västra Götaland, where moose quotas are stricter. Recent changes include adjusted moose quotas in 2023 to stabilize populations and extended wild boar hunting seasons due to overpopulation concerns. 2. Seasonal Patterns and Game Activity The best periods for hunting in Småland align with natural animal behaviors. Moose reach their peak rutting activity in September and October, making this the prime time for moose hunting. Roe deer are most active at dawn and dusk during August and September. Grouse hunting is optimal in October and November when the birds are abundant and active. 3. Restrictions and Protected Species in Småland Strict protections are in place to conserve vulnerable species. Wolves, lynx, and golden eagles are strictly off-limits to hunters. Temporary bans prohibit hunting during bird nesting seasons from April to June. Age and gender restrictions apply, with limits on hunting female moose and roe deer in certain zones to protect breeding populations. 4. How to Obtain a Hunting License in the Region To hunt legally in Småland, hunters must pass the Swedish hunting exam (Jägarexamen), obtain a firearm license if using guns, and secure landowner permission. Key organizations that support hunters include the Småland Hunters’ Association, the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management, and local wildlife management agencies, which provide guidance on regulations, training, and permit applications. 5. Penalties for Violating Hunting Periods in Småland Illegal hunting can result in fines up to 5,000 EUR, with repeat offenders facing license revocation. These penalties emphasize the importance of compliance with hunting laws to protect wildlife and ensure sustainable hunting practices. 6. Tips for Timing, Gear, and Hunting Strategies During winter, thermal gear is essential for hunting wild boar, especially when tracking in snowy conditions. Autumn calls and vocalization techniques are effective during the moose rut. In spring, hunting focuses primarily on permitted species such as foxes. Adapting gear and tactics to seasonal conditions enhances hunting success in Småland’s varied landscapes. Gear Recommendations - Clothing: Layered, waterproof gear for variable weather; camouflage matching seasonal foliage. - Optics: Binoculars with good light transmission for dawn/dusk hunts; rangefinders for precision. - Weapons: Bolt-action rifles for big game; shotguns with slugs for driven boar hunts. - Accessories: Game carts for retrieval in dense forests; GPS devices to navigate Småland’s vast woodlands.
