Review of CZ-550 Rifle in .30-06 Caliber As an avid hunter with several years of experience, I have had the opportunity to use the CZ-550 rifle in .30-06 caliber. I want to share my thoughts on this firearm, highlighting both its strengths and weaknesses to help other hunters make informed decisions. CZ 550 Pros: Accuracy: One of the standout features of the CZ-550 is its inherent accuracy. The heavy barrel design contributes to reduced recoil, enabling me to make precise shots even at extended ranges. This has been especially beneficial during deer and elk hunting seasons where long-distance shots are sometimes necessary. Build Quality: The craftsmanship of the CZ-550 is exceptional. The wood stock feels robust and offers a comfortable grip, while the metal components are solidly constructed. The overall aesthetics of the rifle are pleasing, giving it a classic look that resonates with traditional hunters. Caliber Versatility: The .30-06 caliber is a time-tested choice for a vari

Province takes more steps to combat chronic wasting disease The province is taking more actions to prevent the spread of a deadly disease that impacts deer and other wildlife. Chronic wasting disease was first detected in Manitoba last year in five mule deer along the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. CWD is an incurable, fatal disease that also effects elk moose and caribou. And while no additional cases have been detected, the province is expanding what’s called a mandatory sample submission zone, which requires hunters in certain areas to provide samples of their harvested animal for testing. And a strictly regulated and managed mule deer hunting season will be established. Both changes will take place along the western and southern borders of Manitoba. “Additional longer-term measures are needed to prevent any further spread,” said Maria Arlt of the province’s Natural Resources and Northern Development Branch. “If CWD spreads, it can become one of the greatest threats to population

By Frank Gentile, Hopewell, N.Y. It was October 2011, and I was back in my Chevy Tahoe on my way to another hunt. This time, instead of my son, I was traveling with my hunting buddies. My buddies and I had been on plenty of trips together before but never to Texas! Between the four of us and gear for six (two of our team opted to fly from New York to San Antonio), every single spare inch of space in the truck had been utilized. With each of us taking turns driving, we made it to Texas in about 20 hours. We got dinner and hotel rooms in Texarkana, and were back on the road early the next morning. With a day to spare before we were due at our hunting camp in Hondo, Texas, we headed south with plans to enjoy the city of San Antonio along the way. In San Antonio, we explored the Alamo, the River Walk and the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum. What a great city! Our first order of business after arriving at the camp the next morning was to make sure that our rifles were on target.

Inuit (Aleutian) in a park made from the insides of a sea lion. Nome, Alaska. The year is 1900. Arctic hunters most often make trousers and shoes from the skins of marine mammals, and outerwear from deer skins and warm it with fox, squirrel or arctic fox fur. Among the hunters of Chukotka, rovduga is widely used – suede made of elk or deer skins. Eskimos and Aleutian sea hunters sew unique, authentic waterproof camel lace anoraks. We all use lightweight waterproof raincoats. No fisherman or hunter can do without them, mushroom pickers and outdoor vacationers always take raincoats with them. Modern raincoats are made of plastic or a special impregnated material. However, among the northern peoples, such cloaks are made from natural materials, from the insides of walruses, seals and sea lions. Kamlot is a blind shirt with a hood (anorak), which was usually worn as an upper layer on fur coats or jackets, and sea St. John's wort - for hunting. Such a shirt was made from the insides and

How to Make Pemmican f you’ve ever had a meat or jerky bar made of finely chopped dried meat and perhaps berries, you may be familiar with pemmican. Pemmican consists of lean, dried meat – usually beef nowadays, but bison, deer, and elk were common back in the day) which is crushed to a powder and mixed with an equal amount of hot, rendered fat, usually beef tallow. Sometimes crushed, dried berries are added as well. For long periods of time, people can subsist entirely on pemmican, drawing on the fat for energy and the protein for strength, and glucose, when needed. Will Brantley and Mike Hanback talk long-range glassing, big bucks in Indiana, and pre-season plans in the Realtree Outpost podcast It's late August and still hot, but there's hope in the air, too. Kentucky's squirrel season opened this past weekend, and Tennessee's early three-day "velvet" archery season opened today. With luck, I'll be in a treestand this weekend. We're right on the eve of one of the best times of year, and there's no better time to debut Season 3 of Realtree's Outpost Podcast. This week, I joined fellow blogger and Big Deer TV host Mike Hanback to discuss a variety of pre-season topics. We covered long-range glassing tactics (as detailed here), and discussed why they're still so effective, especially in the early season, and even more so than trail cameras. We discussed plans for this fall, strategies for hunting the drought-stricken West, and personal goals for another season. Then we shifted gears to talk about Josh Honeycutt's recent (and fascinating) story on

Evolution of hunting laws and wildlife conservation/management Upon what concepts are hunting policies and laws based? Wildlife management and hunting policies have evolved over time, based largely on the “public trust doctrine,” which regards wildlife as held in the public trust and managed by scientifically based regulations. Sport hunting helped form a foundation for the preservation and conservation of wildlife in America. Most of the early legislation that formed the foundation for conservation and preservation in the United States was thanks to hunters themselves. Sport hunting was a major movement in nature preservation that widely benefitted conservation efforts from the 1880s-1920s. The reason hunters were so incentivized to preserve nature was to preserve their sport and the moral behind it.
