Honest Review of the InfiRay Geni35R Scope I recently had the opportunity to test the InfiRay Geni35R thermal scope, and I wanted to share my thoughts based on my experience with it. First of all, the build quality of the Geni35R is impressive. It feels sturdy and well-designed, which is essential for outdoor use. The weight is manageable, making it easy to handle during long hours in the field. One of the standout features of the Geni35R is its thermal imaging performance. The image clarity is excellent, even in low-light conditions, and the ability to detect heat signatures is quite impressive. I found that it performed well at various distances, allowing me to accurately identify targets even at longer ranges. The user interface is intuitive, which made it easy to adjust settings on the fly. The various reticle options and color palettes can be tailored to individual preferences, enhancing the user experience. Additionally, the battery life is commendable, lasting through exten

Night hunting presents unique challenges. We discuss the challenges as well as the opportunities available with new technology. As discussed in previous Hogman Outdoors blogs, night hunting presents a unique set of challenges. Nocturnal animals are nocturnal for a very simple reason - they prefer, and in often cases are uniquely adept at, hunting, roaming and prowling at night. In the case of cats and coyotes, their eyes have an increased number of rods, as opposed to cones. Rods increase the ability to intake minimal ambient light and see as they do in full daylight; these animals in effect have their own unique "night vision", allowing them to be very effective at night hunting. It is often times population expansion/presence of human activity that drives these animals to nocturnal behavior. Hogs, on the other hand, are nocturnal for an entirely different reason, they prefer to avoid the heat and UV rays of the sun. While active during the day in the winter months, they w

First Look: Garmin Xero A1i Pro Bow Sight Are you ready to take the next step in archery technology? Technological advancements in the hunting world continue to make hunters more successful. Jack O’Connor felt that one of the most significant advancements to hunting was the modern riflescope. It would be interesting to hear what Mr. O’Connor would have to say today about modern optics. The optics community has snowballed and includes all aspects of the archery world. Fred Bear shot a 65-pound recurve bow, inspiring generations of archers to take up the sport. Bear’s early videos made hunting with a bow adventurous and appealing. Many archers still embrace the basics and shoot instinctively. However, there are modern advancements that allow archers to be more successful. The advent of the compound bow was a huge step. Moving from brass pins to fiber-optic sights showed a clear advantage—carbon arrows overtook the established aluminum arrow market. Speed ratings for bows continue to c

Controversial spring bear hunt up for debate in Washington The Washington Fish and Wildlife Commission will hear a report Friday on potential changes to the 2022 spring bear hunt season. However, several conservation groups said special permits to hunt black bears in the spring should not be issued at all. The groups said the hunts cruelly kill bears just as they’ve emerged from hibernation with cubs in tow. “There's a reason why we don't hunt any other species during the spring – other than turkeys – because spring is an important time for all species in which they're recovering from the winter,” said Claire Loebs Davis, board president, Washington Wildlife First, a conservation group. After hibernation, Loebs Davis said, bears are on the verge of starvation, making the bears sluggish, slow and easy to kill. “Starvation is forcing them into clearings and in areas where the only food is available – where they are easy for hunters to find and shoot,” she said. As bears emerge from

Review of the Pard SA 62-45 LRF Thermal Scope I recently had the opportunity to test the Pard SA 62-45 LRF thermal scope, and I wanted to share my honest impressions based on my experience. First off, the image quality is quite impressive for a thermal scope in this price range. The resolution is clear, and the ability to distinguish between various heat signatures is a notable feature. Whether in complete darkness or during dusk conditions, this scope performs admirably, allowing for effective target acquisition. The built-in LRF (Laser Range Finder) has been a game-changer for my shooting accuracy. It provides quick and reliable distance readings, which is crucial for long-range shots. The range-finding functionality works well, although I found that it can sometimes struggle with reflective surfaces, such as metal objects. One of my favorite aspects of the Pard SA 62-45 is its user-friendly interface. The controls are intuitive, and I quickly figured out how to navigate the diff

Teen hunter shoots record Virginia bull elk Congratulations to Austin Prieskorn! The 15-year-old hunter is now the proud record holder of the only Boone & Crockett (B&C) bull elk for Virginia with a score of 413-7/8” after his dad, Bo, won a Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) raffle. As GOHUNT previously reported, Virginia announced its first historic elk season last year following a successful reintroduction effort spearheaded by RMEF. Out of the five tags available, four went to Virginia residents lucky to draw and the fifth was raffled off by RMEF. Almost 32,000 applicants vied for their chance at a once-in-a-lifetime tag, generating $513,000 for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources general fund, according to B&C. The RMEF tag raised $93,000 and the monies will be used for elk habitat management. Bo was excited to hear that he won. “I haven’t hunted myself in seven years. It’s been all about my boys.” The Prieskorns live in New Mexico and Bo was an outfitter for 30 ye

Soldiers of the elite guard unit of the Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in a leopard skin uniform, 1960, Tehran. Persian leopards are one of the largest subspecies of leopards in the world. Their body length ranges from 126 to 183 cm, and their tail is 94-116 cm long. The skull is 20-25 cm long in males and 20-22 cm in females. The upper teeth of males reach a length of 68-75 mm, in females they are 64-67 mm. The height of the animal is approximately 76 cm, the average weight reaches 70 kg. In general, it is a very cautious and secretive animal. A leopard usually tries to hide, but when defending itself, it can even attack humans. He chooses gorges with streams or dense thickets as shelters. In deciduous forests, it can climb high into trees. It is not afraid of frosts and heat, but the predator usually stays far from reservoirs. The distribution range of this subspecies is quite wide, starting from the Main Caucasian Ridge and continuing to the Red Sea, and from the Bosphorus Ch

Buck Holes Search for what I call buck holes, which are tangles of honeysuckle or wild rose on ridges, cedar or pine thickets, brushy beaver swamps … you get the idea. A buck hole doesn’t have to be large or even remote — just a thick spot other hunters overlook. A grassy ditch near a back road, an overgrown hog lot behind an old barn or a similar neglected spot can hide a big buck. Scour an aerial map for such pockets or strips of cover. Check the edges of a thicket or swamp for trails pocked with big tracks. Look for rubs and late scrapes, which are signs that a buck has moved back in there to evade hunters and breed a last willing doe. When you find a mother lode of fresh sign, stop right there. You don’t want to bust into a small security area, put more heat on already wired deer and bust them out of there. It’s better to back off 100 yards or so and set up on a ridge or point where you can cover buck entry and exit routes into and out of cover.

How to Stalk a Pronghorn Antelope The heat of the merciless sun pounded the back of my neck as I glassed through the small gap of the lone cedar bush I was crouched behind. His handsomely colored face and long curved black horns seemed to fill the viewfinder as I studied every inch of him. He was a dandy goat, and there was nothing more I wanted to do at that moment than wrap my hands around his black, 16-inch horns. This ground-crawling, torturous stalk began some two hours ago, and needless to say my body ached from the countless gouges, pokes and prods from the seemingly endless supply of needle-sharp plants that inhabit this semi-arid landscape. Although I had whittled the mile down to a mere 110 yards, I could go no farther. It wasn’t because of my lack of sheer will, there was just no cover between me and my bedded prize. I could easily have reached out and touched him with the help of modern ballistics, but I receive no satisfaction from that fact. I wanted to get archery-close

Choose the Best Knife for Deer Hunting Should you go with a fixed-blade or a folder? A lifelong deer hunter weighs in with his preferences You can gut and skin a buck with a penknife or a Bowie or any blade in between, but to do the job right, select a tool designed with the deer hunter in mind. Fixed Blade with Gut-Hook If you haven’t tried a fixed-blade knife with a gut-hook, you should. Roll a buck onto his back and use the knife point to make a small incision in the white hair and abdominal wall of the lower belly. Turn the knife over, insert the sharp hook into the slit and zipper the animal open up to the sternum. With a hook, there’s no exposed steel tip to pierce a deer’s paunch and make a mess, or clip your finger. These days it’s vital that you stay knick-free. A Michigan hunter recently was infected with bovine tuberculosis after he sliced his hand while dressing a buck, and there are other deer diseases out there. Be careful and wear rubber gloves. Once you’ve finished the

Honest Review of the Sabatti Rover 870 in .308 Win with a 560mm Barrel As an avid hunter, I’ve had the opportunity to test the Sabatti Rover 870 in .308 Win with a 560mm barrel, paired with the Pulsar Digisight Ultra N455 LRF scope. Here’s my detailed take on this setup, including its strengths and weaknesses. Pros: Accuracy (Sub-MOA Performance): The Sabatti Rover 870 is a true performer when it comes to accuracy. With the .308 Win caliber and a 560mm barrel, I consistently achieved sub-MOA groups at 100 meters. This level of precision is exceptional for a hunting rifle, especially when paired with quality ammunition. Build Quality: The rifle is solidly built, with a robust action and a well-finished stock. The ergonomics are comfortable, and the weight distribution makes it easy to handle, even during extended hunting sessions. Wines to Pair with Fowl Turkey, goose, pheasant? A free-range chicken, or even a capon? The time of the season seems to indicate fowl. We kind of like the idea, since it is out of the ordinary to roast a big bird for a festive feast, the kind of bird that can feed a dozen. With that comes wine challenges, though to say “challenge” is stretching the truth. That truth is almost any wine can match nicely with a big bird roast, plenty of vegetables, maybe a grilled romaine salad with parmesan and homemade croutons. Some choices: Evolve Cellars pinot blanc ($15), almost Alsatian in style with its crispness, but it is distinctively Okanagan as well, with its viscosity and herbal notes, surrounded by delightful stone fruit elements. A sensationally good sparkling wine, the Cipes Blanc de Franc ($45) from Summerhill Pyramid Winery, is a sparkling cabernet franc, which will turn heads, and have people coming back for more, so you may need to have two bottles. It is a delightful, fruit-driven wi

Algeria lifts 25 year long ban on hunting The Algerian government has announced it is lifting the ban on hunting imposed more than 25 years ago because of an Islamist insurgency that was raging at the time, this is according to a report by the BBC. The ban is said to have led to a surge in the population of boars, causing a big nuisance in rural areas where they damaged agricultural land. Authorized hunting will now be able to take place for the next six months, Agriculture Minister Abdelhamid Hamdani was quoted by the Algerian press agency as saying. In the early 1990s, the authorities decided to confiscate hunting guns and ban hunting after armed insurgents started to steal the weapons and use them in their attacks. The ban on hunting other animals and birds has also been lifted.

Yuri Gagarin hunting, 1966. Yuri Gagarin, the first human to journey into outer space, found solace and excitement in hunting during his time on Earth. Despite his groundbreaking achievements in space exploration, Gagarin cherished the simplicity and challenge of tracking game through Russia's vast wilderness. Hunting offered Gagarin a chance to reconnect with nature and escape the pressures of his high-profile career. He particularly enjoyed bird hunting, often venturing out with friends and fellow cosmonauts to the serene landscapes surrounding his home. With his trusty shotgun in hand, Gagarin approached each hunt with the same focus and precision that defined his historic space missions. Colleagues noted his enthusiasm for the sport, describing how he would meticulously prepare for each outing, studying animal behavior and planning his strategy. Hunting provided Gagarin not only with physical relaxation but also mental clarity, allowing him to reflect and recharge away from the
