James Webb: Space telescope reveals 'incredible' Jupiter views The world's largest and most powerful space telescope has revealed unprecedented views of Jupiter. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) took the pictures of the solar system's biggest planet in July. The images show auroras, giant storms, moons and rings surrounding Jupiter in detail that astronomers have described as "incredible". The infrared photographs were artificially coloured to make the features stand out. This is because infrared light is invisible to the human eye. "We've never seen Jupiter like this. It's all quite incredible," said planetary astronomer Imke de Pater, of the University of California, who played a key role in the project. "We hadn't really expected it to be this good, to be honest," she added. The $10bn (£8.5bn) JWST is an international mission led by the US space agency Nasa with its partners from the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency. Nasa said that in the standalone

Night hunting presents unique challenges. We discuss the challenges as well as the opportunities available with new technology. As discussed in previous Hogman Outdoors blogs, night hunting presents a unique set of challenges. Nocturnal animals are nocturnal for a very simple reason - they prefer, and in often cases are uniquely adept at, hunting, roaming and prowling at night. In the case of cats and coyotes, their eyes have an increased number of rods, as opposed to cones. Rods increase the ability to intake minimal ambient light and see as they do in full daylight; these animals in effect have their own unique "night vision", allowing them to be very effective at night hunting. It is often times population expansion/presence of human activity that drives these animals to nocturnal behavior. Hogs, on the other hand, are nocturnal for an entirely different reason, they prefer to avoid the heat and UV rays of the sun. While active during the day in the winter months, they w

Designed to be the perfect combination of speed and comfort, the Escort Dynamax semi-automatic shotgun is loaded with features that maximize both performance and value. The Dynamax is outfitted with Escort's modern, patented Hybrid Cycling System (HCS). It combines the best features from each of the two traditional cycling operating systems, gas and kinetic. The Dynamax will cycle light loads like a traditional gas system, but uses much less gas. As a result, recoil is reduced, and the cycle rate is faster and more efficient. With less felt recoil, the shooter acquires targets faster, making follow up shots more effective. Using less gas to cycle the gun also means the Dynamax does not have to be cleaned as frequently, and the shotgun is simple to break down, making maintenance easy. The entire barrel/receiver module is oxidation-proof for ultimate weather resistance. The precision-tooled barrel is made from Ni-Cr-Mo steel, and is hard-chrome-lined. Beretta AL391 Urika 2 (12 Gauge) - A Hunter's review I've owned and hunted with a Beretta AL391 Urika 2 for a good number of years now. It was my go-to semi-auto for everything from waterfowl to upland birds, and even the occasional sporting clays outing. The Good Stuff Beretta AL391 Urika 2 12-gauge: Shooting Comfort: This is where the Urika 2 truly shines. The gas-operated system does a fantastic job of soaking up recoil. Even with heavier magnum loads, it's surprisingly manageable, which translates to less fatigue during long days in the field and faster follow-up shots. ATA Arms SP 12ga (710mm Barrel) Review Alright, here's an honest and hopefully helpful take on the ATA Arms SP 12 gauge with a 710mm barrel, from a perspective of someone who's spent some decent time in the field and at the range: Having put a fair few shells through the ATA Arms SP, I think I can offer a reasonably balanced review. Full disclosure: I'm not a sponsored shooter or anything like that, just a hunter who appreciates a decent tool. The Good: Value for Money: This is where the ATA Arms SP really shines. You're getting a lot of shotgun for the price point. It's a solid, functional over-under that's significantly cheaper than some of the bigger European brands. For a beginner looking to get into clay shooting or bird hunting without breaking the bank, it's a very appealing option. Reliability: In my experience, the action has been reliably smooth. Ejection's been positive, and I haven't had any major mechanical failures so far. I've put a mix of light target loads a

Roe deer hunting in Belarus: a great shot and tips for choosing a thermal imaging scope Roe deer hunting is an exciting activity that requires patience and skill. In our hunting club in Belarus, we are always happy to share experiences and successes. In this post, we will tell you about a recent hunt, where a hunter made a great shot in tall grass, and also provide useful tips for choosing a thermal imaging scope. Recently, one of our hunters shared a video of a successful roe deer hunt. After observing a pair of roe deer for a long time, he was able to make an accurate shot, which was possible thanks to high-quality optics and a careful approach to the hunting process. This is an example of how important it is to properly prepare and choose the right equipment. A reliable thermal imaging scope is necessary for successful roe deer hunting. SITKA Goes Under ‘Cover’ With Next-Gen Greener Camo When a brand chooses to "Go Green" these days, it tends to mean something completely different. It may seem like a new color to many, but the new palette at SITKA has a lot of hunters excited. OPTIFADE Cover is the first camo option from SITKA that brings increased levels of green and deeper shadows to its lineup. The brand worked with researchers at the University of Georgia Deer Research Lab to create the palette. The goal was to offer better concealment in “greener seasons,” with a focus on hiding hunters in densely vegetated areas and leafy tree environments. Regionally, the target audience for this new shift in shade was the eastern United States. Obviously, this isn’t going to be the top choice for golden grasslands or the red rock of the open badlands, but that isn’t what it’s meant for. Not only does Cover work well in the environments it was designed for, but it also works really well in lower-light, heavily shadowed land

The 5 Best Thermal Monoculars of 2024 Everybody wants to know what goes bump in the night, even if it doesn’t bump and even if it’s not nighttime. Happily, thermal monoculars, a new and energetic category of gear, often identify what used to be invisible. They can help you see everything from human intruders on the other side of a fence, to coyotes and raccoons crouching in the dark, to a problematic wire in a household electrical outlet. We’re talking about monoculars, rangefinders, and cameras that use temperature variations, rather than visible light, to form images that can be captured as photographs or videos, or simply delivered to your eye to answer that ancient question: what’s out there? I’ve used this new class of “optics” over the past year to find newborn calves in a deadly blizzard, to find my ice-fishing buddies in the fog, to detect hidden electrical problems that might burn my house down, to hunt coyotes at midnight, and to finally even the odds on crop-raiding feral

PHEASANT (COMMON) A large, long-tailed game bird. Males have rich chestnut, golden-brown and black markings on body and tail, with a dark green head and red face wattling. Females are mottled with paler brown and black. They were introduced in France long ago and more recent introductions have brought in a variety of races and breeds for sport shooting. It flies fast and in a rolling countryside it is a very difficult bird to shoot. In some of our hunting estates there are also some Reeve’s pheasant. This boldly patterned pheasant is instantly recognizable, having some of the longest tail feathers of any bird species. The male has bright golden-chestnut upper parts, with black borders to each feather creating a strongly scaled appearance, while the upper breast is darker chestnut to black, and the lower breast and side feathers are white, tipped in black. The female is much more light is color with a short tail. The males when they fly make a very characteristic sound (like a smal

History of Christmas In ancient pagan times, the last day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere was celebrated as the night that the Great Mother Goddess gives birth to the baby Sun God. It is also called Yule, the day a huge log is added to a bonfire, around which everyone would dance and sing to awaken the sun from its long winter sleep. In Roman times, it became the celebrations honoring Saturnus (the harvest god) and Mithras (the ancient god of light), a form of sun worship that had come to Rome from Syria a century before with the cult of Sol Invictus. It announced that winter is not forever, that life continues, and an invitation to stay in good spirit. The first day of winter in the Northern Hemisphere occurs between the 20th and 22nd of December. The Roman celebrated Saturnalia between 17 and 24 December. The early Christians To avoid persecution during the Roman pagan festival, early Christians decked their homes with Saturnalia holly. As Christian numbers increased and t

Even kids can brag about owning a Tesla. The electric car maker launched Cyberquad for Kids, a four-wheel all-terrain vehicle inspired by the design of Cybertruck, Tesla's futuristic take on the pickup truck. The $1,900 Cyberquad features a full-steel frame, cushioned seat and an adjustable suspension with rear disk braking and LED light bars, Tesla said on its website. Tesla says the electric ATV is suitable for children ages 8 and up. It can hold a maximum weight of 150 pounds. The Cyberquad's battery has an estimated range of 15 miles, and can recharge in about five hours. It can reach a top speed of 10 mph on one speed setting, and can reverse at a max speed of 5 mph. The company said the Cyberquad will start shipping in two to four weeks. Tesla CEO Elon Musk introduced the Cybertruck in 2019, which drew polarizing reactions for its unusual design. According to the web page for Cybertruck, production on the vehicle is expected to start next year.

Lever-action rifles may seem antiquated, but for some folks, they offer a great combination of hunting aptitude and self-defense effectiveness. The X Model from Henry takes their proven action and adds a bit of a tactical flair with synthetic furniture, a short rail at the end of the fore-end, and a threaded muzzle. Muzzle brakes or a suppressor can be easily added, and even for a camp rifle, being able to easily attach a light is a well-thought-out attribute. It’s a short, handy rifle that can be operated quickly and maneuvered well in tight spaces and cycled very quickly. Your caliber selection will depend on your needs. If you’re dealing with lots of bears as well as two-legged threats, the .45-70 will be the way to go. Otherwise, the .357 or .44 mag options offer plenty of power for hunting deer, and offer increased magazine capacity. Not to mention that the increased barrel length will give you better performance than a handgun will, with mild to little recoil. MSRP: $970

Picking the Best Rifle and Caliber for Pig Hunting Do you need a magnum setup or a fast-shooting semi-auto? Probably, your deer rifle will work just fine Pig Reality There’s a reason gun nuts love pig hunting. In southern states like Texas and Florida, hogs aren’t subject to many game laws, which means you can hunt them with about whatever you please. If you have a magnum rifle that never sees the light of day because, after buying it, you realized cracked clavicles are no fun at all, you can use it on pigs. In fact, some of the advice out there suggests that you need a really big gun for hog hunting, because you never know when a true Hogzilla might make an appearance. On the other hand, plenty of would-be hog hunters show up with high-capacity semi-autos and visions of a mag dump against a marauding horde of pork. Those rifles are fun to shoot and plenty accurate enough, but unless you’re shooting from a helicopter, they rarely give you much of an advantage while pig hunting. Tru

Deep Water Haunts Bass fishing this time of year often corresponds with deep water. In much of the country, bass move offshore and school up to chase open-water baitfish. Offshore structure and cover like river ledges, deep weed beds, rock piles, wing-dams, and deep boat docks can all be dissected with a drop-shot. It particularly excels as a clean-up hitter. Once you catch a few fish from an offshore hot-spot using traditional cranking and worm techniques, pitch a drop-shot in and see what bites. It will often surprise you. The key to this style of fishing is to get the boat near, or over your target. From there, let the bait down until it makes contact with the bottom, and begin a series of light shakes of the worm. You want the bait to move, but not the sinker. This sounds touchy, but it’s easy to get the hang of it. Most experienced drop-shot fishermen call this “shaking slack.” After a little practice, you’ll get the feel of allowing your bait to flutter and sink on a slack line,
