This geography creates ideal habitat for a variety of game species. The region's forests are predominantly made up of native tree species such as kauri and rimu, making them attractive to animals seeking shelter and food. The climate in the East Cape is temperate, with warm summers and mild winters, making it possible to hunt almost year-round. However, hunters should be prepared for variable weather, especially in the mountainous areas where sudden rain and fog can occur. Anschutz 1516 .22 WMR: A Hunter's Honest Review As a hunter who's been tracking game and spending time at the range for years, I have a soft spot for quality rimfire rifles. The Anschutz 1516 in .22 WMR has been on my radar for a while, and after putting it through its paces, here's my no-nonsense take: The Good (Where the 1516 Shines): Unrivaled Accuracy: This is where the Anschutz truly stands out. The match-grade barrel and precise manufacturing translate to incredibly tight groups. Even at 100 yards, it's consistently accurate, making it a top choice for small game hunting and target shooting. I have to say that the .22 WMR version of the 1516 may actually be better that it's .22 LR brother in this instance. Exceptional Trigger: The trigger is crisp, light, and adjustable. It's a joy to use and significantly contributes to the rifle's overall accuracy. High-Quality Build: Anschutz rifles are known for their craftsmanship, and the 1516 is no exception. The fit and finish are ex

The German Wirehaired Pointer: A Hunter's Rugged and Reliable Companion For those of us who live and breathe hunting, the choice of a canine partner is one of the most important decisions we make. We're not looking for a pet; we're looking for a teammate, a specialist, a dog that embodies the spirit of the hunt as much as we do. The German Wirehaired Pointer (GWP) often stands out as a top contender – and for good reason. This isn't a pampered show dog; it's a versatile, tough, and intelligent hunter bred for serious work in the field. What Can a Wirehaired Pointer Hunt? The beauty of the GWP lies in its versatility. They're true multi-purpose dogs. While individual dogs may show a preference for certain game based on their training and experience, a well-bred and trained GWP can excel at: Upland Birds: Pheasant, quail, grouse, woodcock, partridge – the GWP's keen nose, methodical search, and staunch point make it a formidable upland bird dog. They're known for their ability

“Ever since I was a kid, an Alaskan moose hunt has been at the top of my list. And, this season, it was finally here. We were dropped deep into in the Brooks Range and quickly found ourselves chasing rutting bulls through the tundra swamps, tussocks, and ridge lines. After about a week and a handful of incredible encounters, we were hit with a days-long September snow storm. The sudden weather shift also called for a change in our tactics; we began to hunt bull moose more like a Midwest whitetail. Setting up along an obvious trail—that move proved to be the best decision we made on the entire trip. As we waited to fly the meat out, we glassed up a large grizzly—a bonus opportunity after an already successful hunt. We put a plan for a stalk in place and with luck still on our side, it all came together. There are no words to describe a hunt like this other than, once-in-a-lifetime.” - Mathews own’ Jeff Ozanne #MathewsLIFTX #mathews

Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50 Scope Review I recently had the opportunity to test the Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50 rifle scope, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this product after extensive use in various hunting scenarios. Build Quality and Design First and foremost, the build quality of the VX-3 is top-notch. Leupold is known for its durable optics, and the VX-3 is no exception. The housing is made from a solid aluminum alloy, and it feels robust and can withstand the rigors of outdoor use. SITKA Goes Under ‘Cover’ With Next-Gen Greener Camo When a brand chooses to "Go Green" these days, it tends to mean something completely different. It may seem like a new color to many, but the new palette at SITKA has a lot of hunters excited. OPTIFADE Cover is the first camo option from SITKA that brings increased levels of green and deeper shadows to its lineup. The brand worked with researchers at the University of Georgia Deer Research Lab to create the palette. The goal was to offer better concealment in “greener seasons,” with a focus on hiding hunters in densely vegetated areas and leafy tree environments. Regionally, the target audience for this new shift in shade was the eastern United States. Obviously, this isn’t going to be the top choice for golden grasslands or the red rock of the open badlands, but that isn’t what it’s meant for. Not only does Cover work well in the environments it was designed for, but it also works really well in lower-light, heavily shadowed land

How We Tested the Best Spotting Scopes We invite manufacturers to submit any new spotting scopes introduced from mid-2022 through 2023. Because this particular category of sports optics is expensive to manufacture, and because the market isn’t nearly as dynamic as rifle scopes or binoculars—after all, once you’ve purchased a spotting scope, you’re unlikely to be in the market for another—we test spotters only every two or three years. Low-Light Performance We also measure the low-light performance of each submission by mounting them to tripods and focusing them at 200 yards at a black-and-white resolution target at twilight, all in order to measure the brightness of the glass. The scope that can “see” the longest into the gathering darkness gets top marks. The scope that loses its night-vision earliest gets the lowest score. Scopes in the middle receive scores somewhere between those two poles. How We Score and Grade Optics We break our 10-point scoring into four general categories

Cambodia’s wildlife still faces high risk of hunting Amid a shortage of rangers and with villagers facing financial difficulties, officials said Cambodia’s wildlife continues to face a high risk of poaching. Sreng Cheaheng, head of the department of environment in Stung Treng, told CamboJA that the selling of illegal wild meat has significantly decreased in the province with education and enforcement. But, he said, poaching continues as people rely on it for their income. ‘’As of today, wild meat selling still can be seen but it is in a small amount compared to before. The authorities work every day to observe where people sell these wild meats. However, it is impossible to completely stop it because it is a part of the income of residents living in this province,” he said. Cheaheng told CamboJA that arrests have dropped, with just two people arrested for hunting wild meat last year. ‘’There are different types of wildlife that have been hunted but wild boar and deer are on the top

The top is mountain hunting. This is a closed hunting club, which is not easy to get into, even if you have money and position in society. First-class physical training is mandatory here: tracking mountain sheep occurs at an altitude above 3 thousand meters. m in difficult weather conditions and not for one or two days, but for weeks. Shooting in the mountains requires special training from the hunter. Not every professional sniper in the conditions of the plain is guaranteed to hit the target from a distance of 400-600 m. And a mountain trophy hunter after a week-long trek at an altitude of 3 thousand. m and above has a chance of only one accurate shot, which is measured in hundreds of meters. The geography of this kind of hunting, without exaggeration, covers the whole world. Each mountain has only its own kind of sheep. In the mountains of Alaska, these are sheep Shares, in the mountains of Iran — a blue ram, in the Pamirs — the most valuable from a trophy point of view, the Mar

Hunting with Hawks Perhaps you'll never try falconry yourself. Katherine Browne once thought the same thing. But these days, the Prois pro-staff coordinator and licensed falconer does her small-game hunting with a raptor named Hades Katherine Browne’s hunting partner, Hades, can be a little high strung and aggressive at times, but Browne overlooks it. Hades is pretty good at what he does, and that behavior is typical for his kind. A northern goshawk, Hades is a member of the raptor family, and his natural maneuverability and speed make him a top predator and excellent hunting companion. When Browne, the dealer relations and pro-staff coordinator for Prois Hunting Apparel, is not working, you can often find the licensed falconer training Hades to hunt ducks, pheasant, grouse and quail in the woods and fields by her home. How does a young woman, such as Browne, become a falconer? “I have always been intrigued by raptors, and I love the idea of being a part of something wild and ancient

How the Grunt Call Came to Be Realtree pro staffer Brad Harris was grunting up whitetails long before deer calling was cool Brad Harris was high in a tree in Mingo Swamp in southeast Missouri when a 6-point buck walked by at about 80 yards. Harris doesn’t remember the exact year, but it was in the ’70s. He was working in the mines back in those days, and he was among several in a group who loved to bowhunt and spent about every free minute of a break talking about bows, arrows, broadheads, and whitetails. This was back in the day, Harris says, when top-of-the-line hunting equipment was a 45-pound Shakespeare recurve with cedar arrows, and just getting a deer — anything with legal antlers — was a huge accomplishment. One of those buddies at the mine had told Harris that his brother had been hunting and listened as a little buck, standing right under his tree, had made a curious grunting sound. The guy pinched his nose and re-created the grunt himself. Harris had never heard a whitetail

How to Call in a Bull Elk Like a Calling Champion Do You Use These Techniques? You might expect a top elk caller to focus his hunting advice on proper call selection, volume, tone, timing or teamwork. But one Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation World Elk Calling Championship winner says perhaps the most critical step to calling in elk is how you set up to intercept an approaching bull. Corey Jacobsen of Boise, Idaho, is one of the most decorated world champion elk callers in the country, as well as a consistently successful bowhunter. Jacobsen offers the following key advice on calling elk into bow range: “The setup might be the most critical step," Jacobsen said. "It always plays a major role in determining the outcome of a hunt. I can’t count how many hunts have been blown by a bad setup — too much brush to shoot through, not enough cover to hide in, no shooting lanes, inconsistent wind currents, caught in the open, the list goes on and on. “I always repeat one word to myself when I’m s

Hardware: Colt Anaconda For some folks, the sight of a scoped bolt-action rifle or elegant over/under shotgun instantly makes them think of hunting. Five Top Tips to Improve Low Light Hunting Illuminated Reticles One of the most popular simple solutions to low light hunting is to buy a riflescope with an illuminated reticle, whereby a light source is directed onto the aim points of the reticle, highlighting the reticle in red, green or blue. The illumination is variable and this allows the shooter to increase the brightness of the reticle to suit the shooting conditions. Hawke Optics have several illuminated riflescopes with illumination control and options of red, green or blue to suit the shooters preference. Illuminated reticles are most useful at dawn or dusk, after this time it is better to illuminate the target with an external light source. View the entire collection of Hawke Reticles.

How to Can Deer Meat Tools and Ingredients: Pressure canner Quart jars, rings, and lids Venison Garlic Non-iodized salt Black pepper Directions: Trim up meat so that the majority of fat and tendons are removed. Cube the meat into pieces that are about the size of a golf ball. “Cold pack” the raw meat into the quart jar, leaving about 1 inch of headspace. Use a spoon to tightly pack in the meat. Don’t add any liquid, as the meat will create natural juices during the canning process. Put 1 teaspoon of non-iodized salt, ¼ teaspoon of black pepper, and two cloves of garlic on top of the meat. Adding a few slices of green pepper or onion is optional, and note that a little bit of flavor while canning will go a long way. Place on lid and screw on ring. Put your jars in the canner. Follow the directions that are specific to your pressure canner, which will suggest something like adding three quarts of water, and canning for 90 minutes at 15 pounds of pressure. It’s important that you know you

3 Top States for DIY Big Buck Hunters These three stops all have over-the-counter tags and great potential for shooting a trophy buck For a Do-It-Yourself hunter, nothing beats the simplicity of traveling to another state, buying a deer tag over the counter, and then going to the woods. There are plenty of places for us DIYers to hunt like that and probably get a shot at a deer, too. But not as many have strong trophy potential. A 2 1/2-year-old 8-pointer is cream of the crop for most public-land hunting in states like New York, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania. If your personal standards are a bit higher than that — maybe you’re after 3 1/2-year and older bucks — you might be facing long odds in most OTC states, at least on public lands. But shooting a mature buck on public land is within the realm of possibility in a few places, for hardworking hunters. These three states — all with OTC tags —have proven that they can regularly produce mature deer, and have some good public hunting to bo

Tips for Hunting Fox Squirrels Tactics for hunting our largest tree squirrel aren’t the same as for more common gray squirrels “Let’s go chase after a fox squirrel.” Those were the last words I remember my friend Hunter saying to me before we wandered down the logging road that cut through the top of Brush Mountain. I was cramming my brain with communication law court cases for an exam. He knew exactly how to escape the books. In a sudden dart down the mountainside, Hunter vanished into the fall foliage. I scuffled through the leaves behind him the best I could in rubber boots to find him encouraging me to hurry. He handed me the .22 Magnum. “It’s a fox squirrel,” Hunter whispered. The squirrel was frozen high up in an oak tree. I aimed the gun to the sky. It took me too long to steady my shooting position, and I was certain the squirrel was going to move. But he remained still as a statue, and at the shot, the squirrel fell through the autumn air. Its fur was auburn and delicate, and

Best Dog Breeds for Shed Hunters A pro trainer weighs in on the traits you should look for in an antler-finding dog At the beginning of every shed hunting season, I always imagine the treasure trove of deer antlers I will find. Then, reality sets in. I end up with a few good antlers, a bunch of dinks, and some weird stuff. This year, I found a ram’s horn. Last year, it was a toilet seat. At the end of it all, I always think about what a good year it would’ve been if I’d just gotten a dang antler dog. That sparked a conversation with Dog Bone’s Jeremy Moore about the best dog breeds for shed hunters. “I don’t know if there is such a thing,” Moore says. “I think it depends completely on matching you with the right dog. It’s a stylistic and preference thing more than anything.” So, if you were hoping for a definitive list of the top 10 shed hunting breeds, this isn’t it. The good news is, you have a real chance of getting the dog you already have – or the one you want – to start finding a
