American Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary in polar expedition gear aboard his ship SS Roosevelt, 1908. In the frigid expanse of the Arctic Ocean, where ice stretched endlessly and the sun barely peeked above the horizon, stood one of America’s most daring explorers, Robert Edwin Peary. It was the year 1908, a time when the world's eyes were fixed on the North Pole, an elusive goal that had captivated the imagination of adventurers for centuries. Peary, aboard his sturdy ship, the SS Roosevelt, prepared for what would be his final and most ambitious expedition to reach the top of the world. The SS Roosevelt, named after the then-President Theodore Roosevelt who had supported Peary’s endeavors, was a specially designed vessel built to withstand the crushing grip of pack ice. Its reinforced hull, thick timbers, and powerful engine made it one of the few ships capable of navigating the treacherous waters of the Arctic. But even with such a formidable vessel, the journey ahead was fraugh

The Alaskan Malamute is a majestic breed known for its strength, endurance, and friendly nature. Originating in the Arctic, these dogs were bred by the Mahlemut people to haul heavy sleds and assist in hunting. With their thick double coats, they are perfectly equipped for cold weather, making them one of the most resilient dogs during harsh winters. Malamutes are not just powerful; they are also highly social animals. They thrive on companionship and are known for their gentle and affectionate demeanor towards their families. However, they can be quite independent and stubborn, which requires consistent training and socialization from an early age. These dogs are playful and love to exercise, so it's essential to provide them with plenty of physical activity. A daily run or hike can keep them happy and healthy. It's also crucial to engage their minds with puzzles and training games to prevent boredom. If you’re considering adding an Alaskan Malamute to your family, be prepared for

Wolf charges Bear, then Bear charges the Wolf. I waited at a Bison carcass from 5am to 9pm for 3 days. Eagles and coyotes had been coming in trying to get a bite, while the Grizzly guarded the carcass, just as its mother taught it to. It would sleep on it and cover it with dirt, and when it seemingly left the scene….it would show back up when other animals tried to feed. On the 3rd morning a lone Wolf 1479 showed up from the Junction Butte pack. It had about 10 minutes to eat before the Grizzly came back. They had an initial stare down. The wolf stood on the carcass and then charged the bear. The bear initially retreated and then decided to charge the wolf. Of course the bear reclaimed the carcass. Gold caviar for Russian Tsar. Pike caviar, once a rare and exclusive delicacy reserved for Russian Tsars, is steeped in history and intrigue. In the past, catching pike under the ice was an arduous and challenging task without modern equipment, making its caviar all the more precious. The skill and effort required to harvest this elusive fish during winter meant that only the most experienced fishermen could procure it, and even then, yields were limited. As a result, pike caviar became a symbol of luxury and privilege, gracing the tables of royalty and high society. Its unique flavor—mild yet distinct, with a hint of sweetness and crunch—made it a favorite among Russian nobility. Served on crisp bread or paired with rich creams, it was considered a true gourmet experience. Today, while easier to obtain, pike caviar still carries echoes of its regal past, offering a taste of history with every bite. It remains a testament to the resourcefulness of traditional fishing practices and con

CNW- The Government of Antigua and Barbuda has denied its representatives on the International Whaling Commission (IWC) are assisting with efforts to repeal the whaling ban. Whaling is the process of hunting whales for their usable products such as meat and blubber, which can be turned into a type of oil that became increasingly important in the Industrial Revolution In a statement released yesterday, the government said, “Cabinet has NOT agreed to repeal the moratorium on whale hunting and is unaware of any statement to the contrary.” The government of Antigua and Barbuda issued the statement after international media outlets and marine charities reported that Antigua and Barbuda had proposed the repeal of the moratorium on whaling alongside Japan and several other nations. Marine wildlife protection charity, OceanCare, claimed Antigua and Barbuda and countries which support the lifting of the ban proposed that whales be seen as a food source to secure food and nutritional securit

New ‘snug,’ a snail with a too-small shell, described from Brunei rainforest A group of researchers and citizen-scientists have identified a new semi-slug species, Microparmarion sallehi, from the lowland rainforests of northern Borneo Island. Their study suggests there may be some half a dozen other species from the same genus waiting to be described, highlighting the rich biodiversity of this region. For this description, the local and international scientists involved students and laypersons in the team on a combined program of biodiversity training and exploration. The study authors note that scientific knowledge of Southeast Asian slugs in general is lacking due to low collection samples, meaning the prospects for describing a new species is high. Michigan weighs potential wolf hunting season If wolves are delisted, should Michigan hold a hunting season? This question is currently making the rounds in the Mitten State as the Michigan Natural Resources Commission (MNRC) determines whether or not that will occur if the state’s largest predator is removed from the federal endangered species list, according to The Detroit News. With annual tallies between 600 and 700, wolves are thriving in the Upper Peninsula and Michigan officials say that “the state’s wolf population has stayed stable for the past 12 years.” However, whether the state would hold a wolf hunting season continues to be a divided topic – one that invokes those passionate for a season and those who are strongly against one. “People don’t like wolves,” said Brian Roell, a Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologist. “Unlike any other wildlife we deal with, it’s a love-or-hate relationship for most folks.” Supporters of a potential hunting season say

Wisconsin deer hunt's underwhelming opening weekend blamed on warm weather, lack of snow Over 11,000 fewer deer killed in WI this year compared to 2022 A lack of snow and warm temperatures that suppressed deer movement led to a lackluster opening weekend of Wisconsin's nine-day gun season, with hunters killing thousands fewer deer than last year. The state Department of Natural Resources released preliminary data Tuesday that showed hunters registered 92,050 deer compared with 103,623 deer last year. That's a 16% drop-off from 2022 and 10% fewer deer than the five-year average for opening weekend. Hunters also registered 51,870 bucks, down 13% from 56,638 over opening weekend in 2022. The number of potential hunters didn't vary much from last year, however. The DNR reported that sales of all deer licenses stood at 774,369 as of midnight Sunday, with 421,525 of those licenses exclusively for gun use. Overall, sales of all deer licenses were down 0.61% from the same time last year. W

Wildschweinjagd.

Cold and Snowy Conditions to Greet Wisconsin Deer Hunters Hunters couldn't ask for better conditions when Wisconsin's annual nine-day gun deer season opens Saturday. MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Hunters can expect near-perfect conditions when Wisconsin's annual nine-day gun deer season opens Saturday. Wisconsin Public Radio reported Thursday that temperatures in the 20s and 30s will allow hunters to sit in one area comfortably if they choose and snow-covered ground will make deer more visible and easier to track. The only issue could be wind, which could affect deer movement and make things tougher for hunters, said Jeff Pritzl, state Department of Natural Resources deer program specialist. DNR officials told WPR that they expect to sell about 550,000 licenses this year. The agency sold 564,440 licenses last year. License sales have been trending down for more than 20 years, slipping about 1.5% annually since 2000 as older hunters age out of the sport faster than young people are taking

ASTANA (AFP-Jiji) — Kazakhstan on Oct. 16 said it would legalize hunting of the once-threatened Saiga antelopes to manage their population — a sensitive subject in a country where the animals are widely revered. The government said there are currently around two million Saiga antelopes. Once threatened with extinction, the antelopes are still on the red list of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. “Regulation of the Saigas is necessary. This species is damaging farming,” Ecology Minister Erlan Nysanbayev told a press conference, adding that damage caused by them to farms totaled 12 million tenge ($25 million). “There are two methods — capturing them during the day using nets and hunting them at night. I won’t avoid the question. We will also have to use the second option,” he said. A ministry spokesman said that “up to 337,500 Saiga antelopes have to be captured or killed by November 30.” The culling of Saiga antelopes is a frequent subject of debate in Kazakhst

It’s never too early to start planning for next year’s big trips. National Geographic is getting an early start, too, releasing its Best of the World list in late October with 25 must-see destinations for 2023. Respect – for the people and their cultures, for the land and its conservation – is an overarching theme of the list, which is divided into five official categories. The hope is that 2023 will be not just a big return to travel but also to rediscovering wonder, said Amy Alipio, senior editor for National Geographic Travel. “Because when you are awed by something, you treat it with respect. And that spirit is something we want to encourage with this list,” Alipio said. The list focuses on destinations that have community-led conservation efforts, healing and heritage journeys and ways for travelers to give back as well as places that are doing important work in ecotourism, sustainability and inclusive travel.

Fox Foxes are small to medium-sized, omnivorous mammals belonging to several genera of the family Canidae. They have a flattened skull, upright, triangular ears, a pointed, slightly upturned snout, and a long bushy tail (or brush). Twelve species belong to the monophyletic "true foxes" group of genus Vulpes. Approximately another 25 current or extinct species are always or sometimes called foxes; these foxes are either part of the paraphyletic group of the South American foxes, or of the outlying group, which consists of the bat-eared fox, gray fox, and island fox. Foxes live on every continent except Antarctica. The most common and widespread species of fox is the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) with about 47 recognized subspecies. The global distribution of foxes, together with their widespread reputation for cunning, has contributed to their prominence in popular culture and folklore in many societies around the world. Wisconsin Known for cheese, farm fields, big hardwood timber, and the Green Bay Packers, the Badger State is also among the states with the most deer, at least according to Kip Adams, a wildlife biologist and chief conservation officer of the National Deer Association. While Wisconsin doesn’t estimate its deer herd numbers, Jeffrey Pritzl, a wildlife biologist with the Wisconsin DNR, provided some insight. “We don’t generate a statewide deer population,” he said, “because it’s a really big number that doesn’t translate well to the individual hunting experience due to widely varied deer densities. However, it’s safe to say that there are well over a million deer, especially pre-deer season. In our online Deer Metrics System, we provide a graph of the statewide post-hunting season population. Some areas may have 10 deer per square mile, and others have more than 100. Our highest densities are in east-central farmlands.” Even though Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, and Kentucky get tons of

Montana judge to issue decision on wolf hunting and trapping Montana hunters and trappers await a decision that should come sometime this week as a temporary restraining order that immediately changed the state’s wolf season expires today. District Court Judge Chris Abbot issued the restraining order earlier this month that applied to Lewis and Clark counties. The order suspended the state’s regulations, which allowed for expanded wolf hunting and trapping. On Monday, Abbott heard testimony regarding the issue. He said he would decide today whether the temporary limits placed on wolf hunting should continue or if the quotas and hunting methods “pending a trial over changes in the way the state estimates the size of the wolf population” to inform hunting quotas should continue, according to the Associated Press. In October, WildEarth Guardians and Project Coyote filed a lawsuit, alleging that Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (Montana FWP) and the Montana Fish and Wildlife Commissio

Alaska (Russian: Аляска) is a state located in the Western United States on the northwest extremity of North America. A semi-exclave of the U.S., it borders the Canadian province of British Columbia and the Yukon territory to the east; it also shares a maritime border with the Russian Federation's Chukotka Autonomous Okrug to the west, just across the Bering Strait. To the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort seas of the Arctic Ocean, while the Pacific Ocean lies to the south and southwest. Alaska is by far the largest U.S. state by area, comprising more total area than the next three largest states (Texas, California, and Montana) combined. It represents the seventh largest subnational division in the world. It is the third-least populous and the most sparsely populated state, but by far the continent's most populous territory located mostly north of the 60th parallel, with a population of 736,081 as of 2020—more than quadruple the combined populations of Northern Canada and Greenland.

Less Lethal Wolf Ammo? Roughly 30 local ranchers gathered at the fairgrounds in Carey, Idaho, last week to talk wolves. But this was far from the typical wolf discussion. The workshop, possibly the first of many hosted by Defenders of Wildlife, took an unusual and widely unacknowledged tack: Don't shoot the predator, protect the prey. The morning served as a crash course in a host of non-lethal deterrents to wolf predation, from guard dogs to grazing rotations. It also marked the first attempt by Defenders to share with the public lessons learned over the past three years by the Wood River Wolf Project. Defenders of Wildlife spokeswoman Suzanne Stone says the project has field-tested numerous tools for decreasing livestock losses to predators, an approach that replaces the habit of killing problem animals with the concept of coexistence. "If you do nothing and kind of rely on the traditional lethal control methods routinely used by [U.S. Department of Agriculture] Wildlife Services f

Hunting the Modern Cottontail Rabbit A New Age Has Dawned in the World of Rabbit Hunting Hunters have been pursuing the Eastern cottontail ever since the time of the earliest Native Americans. Although hunter numbers have declined from peak numbers, rabbit hunting still remains extremely popular overall and is one of the most popular small game pursuits. However, the dynamics of hunting cottontails have changed dramatically, and to achieve consistent success in the field, hunters must adapt to the new age of rabbit hunting. The Decline Bunny Facts: The number of rabbit hunters has declined through the years. Even so, rabbit hunting is still popular. According to recent surveys, approximately 1.5 million people hunt rabbits and/or hares. Rabbit/hare hunting ranked as the fourth most popular hunting endeavor, tied with pheasant hunting and behind only whitetail deer, turkey, and squirrel. Rabbit hunting ranked more popular than waterfowl and dove hunting, as well as all other species s

Wild boar hunting is one of the most popular hunt in France. With an ever-growing population, Wild Boar is commonly present in many regions of France. The average weight is around 50 to 80 kg (110 to 176 lbs) and the biggest male adults are from 100 to 200 kg (220 to 440 lbs), the trophy consisting of its tusks (canines and incisors). Mainly hunted on driven hunts, the wild boar is a smart animal, astute enough to cross hunters' line and then escape. With a very good memory and a perfect knowledge of its territory the Wild Boar is a fascinating animal to hunt and hard to catch. Wounded, this animal can be very dangerous and won't hesitate to charge dogs and sometimes human beings. We hunt wild boar from mid-August to end of February. Stalking and driven hunt are the main methods of hunting this animal. This experience is incredibly intense!

Private property owners sue over Virginia’s hunting dog law WILSONS, Va. — Soon after Jim Medeiros bought his 143-acre (58-hectare) cattle and poultry farm in rural Virginia a decade ago, he and his wife were startled by the sounds of 20 hunting dogs barking and howling as they circled their house and chased their chickens When Medeiros confronted a hunter nearby, the man told him he had permission to hunt on Medeiros’ property. In disbelief, Medeiros called the agency that enforces a state law allowing hunters to retrieve their hunting dogs from private property, even when the property owners object. “He told me, you can’t prohibit people from coming onto your land,” recalled Medeiros. He then pointed out that his land was posted with no trespassing signs. “I said, ‘You don’t understand. My land is posted,'” Medeiros said. You don’t understand,” the official responded. “You can’t stop them.” After years of putting up with baying dogs and dead chickens, Medeiros and several other prope

Albania's Hunting Ban: Birds and Mammals Get a Two-Year Break Vast numbers of European birds and other wildlife will be spared from illegal slaughter, thanks to a two-year moratorium on all hunting enacted by the government of Albania. The Balkan country, which lies along a major migratory flyway, encompasses wetlands and other habitats that provide crucial refueling stops for millions of migrating birds. But poor law enforcement, a surge in gun ownership, and an influx of foreign hunters had made Albania essentially a year-round shooting range. Targets were not just game species but also eagles, cranes, shorebirds, and even small songbirds. "Albania was a death trap for migrating birds," said Gabriel Schwaderer, executive director of the conservation organization EuroNatur. It wasn't just birds that suffered, according to Schwaderer. To study the critically endangered Balkan lynx, EuroNatur set up automatic cameras in mountainous areas, documenting all passing animals. Mammals suc
