As someone who’s spent countless dawns in the woods, boots soaked and breath fogging in the cold, I can tell you this: hunting isn’t just about the shot - it’s about preparation. Whether you’re stalking elk in the Rockies, waiting on whitetail in a tree stand, or calling ducks from a blind, the gear you carry can make or break your hunt. So, what should every hunter have? Let me walk you through the essentials - not just the obvious ones, but the real-world tools that seasoned hunters never leave behind. 🎯 1. Weapon of Choice (and the Right Ammo) Let’s start with the obvious. Whether it’s a rifle, shotgun, bow, or crossbow, your weapon must match your game and terrain. But don’t just bring your firearm-bring the right ammunition, and plenty of it. I’ve seen hunts ruined because someone packed the wrong grain or gauge. 4 Tips to Prevent and Treat Snakebites in Dogs Do You Know How to Keep Your Dog Safe from Snakes? A dog encounters all sorts of hazards in the field when you open the crate, drop the tailgate and start hunting. Venomous snakes are but one. Some states around the country present a more perilous scenario for such interactions, while others provide less. Ways to prevent and treat snake bites, shared courtesy of Purina Pro Plan, follow: 1. Know Before You Go Familiarize yourself with the types of snakes native to the area in which you live or are traveling to for a hunt or field trial. How the Grunt Call Came to Be Realtree pro staffer Brad Harris was grunting up whitetails long before deer calling was cool Brad Harris was high in a tree in Mingo Swamp in southeast Missouri when a 6-point buck walked by at about 80 yards. Harris doesn’t remember the exact year, but it was in the ’70s. He was working in the mines back in those days, and he was among several in a group who loved to bowhunt and spent about every free minute of a break talking about bows, arrows, broadheads, and whitetails. This was back in the day, Harris says, when top-of-the-line hunting equipment was a 45-pound Shakespeare recurve with cedar arrows, and just getting a deer — anything with legal antlers — was a huge accomplishment. One of those buddies at the mine had told Harris that his brother had been hunting and listened as a little buck, standing right under his tree, had made a curious grunting sound. The guy pinched his nose and re-created the grunt himself. Harris had never heard a whitetail

Oyster hunting and sorting in 19th-century France was an essential maritime and culinary practice that reflected both the country’s deep gastronomic traditions and the evolving dynamics of coastal economies. While the term “oyster hunting” may evoke images of wild foraging, in reality, oyster production during this period was increasingly a blend of traditional harvesting, early aquaculture techniques, and organized labor—especially along the Atlantic coast and in regions like Normandy, Brittany, and the Marennes-Oléron basin. Oyster Harvesting: From Hunting to Cultivation In the early 1800s, oysters were still largely gathered from natural beds in intertidal zones, estuaries, and shallow coastal waters. Fishermen and oyster gatherers—known as *pêcheurs d’huîtres* or *parqueurs*—would wade or use flat-bottomed boats at low tide to collect oysters from rocky shores and muddy flats. This labor-intensive work required knowledge of tides, seasons, and local ecosystems. However, overharv

Crocodile hunting. Egypt, 1870s. Photographer: Henri Bechard Henri Bashar opened a studio in Cairo and sold tourists photographs with views of ancient Egyptian structures. From the 1st millennium BC to the 4th century AD (Roman period), the ancient Egyptians mummified millions of animals, most of the mummies were classified by Egyptologists as ‘votive sacrifices’ to gods and goddesses. Before the construction of the Aswan Dam, Nile crocodiles were found throughout the Nile. Moreover, in ancient times crocodiles were found in Israel, Lebanon and Syria. The ancient Egyptians hunted crocodiles for their mummies, scientists have come to this conclusion. The crocodile, from which the ancient Egyptians made one of the mummies, was not grown in special conditions at the temple. Scientists from France and the United States came to this conclusion after studying the remains using an elementary particle accelerator, the Journal of Archaeological Sciences writes. Evolution of hunting laws and wildlife conservation/management Upon what concepts are hunting policies and laws based? Wildlife management and hunting policies have evolved over time, based largely on the “public trust doctrine,” which regards wildlife as held in the public trust and managed by scientifically based regulations. During the last century, sportsmen-conservationists demanded that their government put in place agencies, institutions, laws and regulations to conserve wildlife on behalf of the citizens. As part of that demand, sportsmen/conservationists advocated ethics and self policing by any and all who partake of America’s wild bounty. The laws, rules and regulations governing hunting form a framework for a system that is designed to provide surpluses of certain species of wildlife for hunting and fishing, revenue from which funds the conservation of all wildlife, including species that aren’t hunted. This system provides the agility for wildlife managers to respond to c

Best Dog Breeds for Shed Hunters A pro trainer weighs in on the traits you should look for in an antler-finding dog At the beginning of every shed hunting season, I always imagine the treasure trove of deer antlers I will find. Then, reality sets in. I end up with a few good antlers, a bunch of dinks, and some weird stuff. This year, I found a ram’s horn. Last year, it was a toilet seat. At the end of it all, I always think about what a good year it would’ve been if I’d just gotten a dang antler dog. That sparked a conversation with Dog Bone’s Jeremy Moore about the best dog breeds for shed hunters. “I don’t know if there is such a thing,” Moore says. “I think it depends completely on matching you with the right dog. It’s a stylistic and preference thing more than anything.” So, if you were hoping for a definitive list of the top 10 shed hunting breeds, this isn’t it. The good news is, you have a real chance of getting the dog you already have – or the one you want – to start finding a

How to Make Moose Jerky Moose jerky is delicious, nutritious and easy to make. The basic concept in my recipe is to take a quality cut of moose, slice it thin, marinate it for four hours and then remove the moisture from the meat in a dehydrator for four- to six hours at 155℉. Here’s how I make moose jerky: Ingredients 3 pound lean moose roast or steak 2/3 cup Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup soy sauce 2 tbsp honey 2 tsp ground black pepper 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes 1 tsp onion powder Step 1 Using a meat slicer—I use a Weston Pro 320 10” Meat Slicer—cut your moose into 1/8-inch slices. I like using lean steaks and roasts from the rear quarter. Flank steak is another popular option. I’ve tried backstrap, but didn’t like it as well due to the fat marbling in the meat. Frozen, slightly thawed meat works best for slicing in a meat slicer. Step 2 In a medium bowl, mix all the ingredients (except the moose) until blended. I use a whisk to integrate the honey into the liquid. Pour the mix

Border Terrier: The Rugged Little Hunter You Might Be Overlooking The Border Terrier. Most people picture a scruffy, friendly family dog. But beneath that charming exterior lies a tenacious, skilled hunter that's been quietly working alongside sportsmen for over a century. Why did the Americans try to destroy the bison population? The near-destruction of the American bison (or buffalo) population in the 19th century was not an accidental or random event but rather a deliberate and systematic effort driven by multiple factors, many of which were tied to the U.S. government's broader policies toward Native Americans. ‘Field and Stream’ has been the preeminent American outdoors publication for over a century with a current monthly circulation exceeding 1,000,000. It was the outgrowth of a periodical entitled ‘Northwestern Field and Stream’ which was first published in St Paul Minnesota in 1895. A year later, John P Burkhard acquired this publication, renamed it, and dubbed it “A Journal for the True Sportsman”. As his first editor, Burkhard hired Charles Hallock, stealing him away from ‘Forest and Stream’, the leading outdoor magazine of the time which had been published regularly since 1873 but was eventually absorbed in 1930 by the increasingly popular ‘Field and Stream’. Hunting, fishing and camping were, and continue to be, the strongest focuses of the magazine. There have been more than 150 covers depicting the various forms of fishing, and many are specifically about fly fishing.
