Fox and Spring In early spring, foxes in the UK exhibit specific behaviors driven by the need to care for their young and adapt to changing environmental conditions. Here’s an overview of how foxes behave during this time: --- 1. Breeding and Den Preparation - Mating Season: Foxes typically mate between December and February, so by early spring (March to April), vixens (female foxes) are either pregnant or have recently given birth. - Denning Behavior: Vixens prepare dens (also called earths) where they will give birth and raise their cubs. These dens are often located in woodland areas, hedgerows, or even under garden sheds in urban settings. Foxes may use multiple dens and rotate them to avoid detection by predators. 2. Birth and Care of Cubs - Cub Birth: In early spring, fox cubs are usually born after a gestation period of about 52 days. How Mexico revolutionized the science of antivenom Innovative policies and a diverse scorpion population have led to new treatments in Mexico, providing a model for other developing countries, experts say. PUEBLA STATE, MEXICO Ojo de Agua Ranch, at the edge of the sleepy town of Agua Fria, is home to nine dogs, six geese, 12 canaries, 21 sheep, and 163 horses. The sprawling 400-acre oasis is the inheritance of five brothers, the eldest of which, Alejandro Alagón, bought the equines in 2008 with a specific purpose in mind: Creating antivenom. Nearly 140,000 people die from snakebites annually, many of which are treatable with antivenoms, according to the World Health Organization. Envenomations—the term for bites and stings caused by animals such as snakes and scorpions—are also a silent scourge: In 2017, WHO added snakebite envenomations to its list of neglected tropical diseases. That’s why, throughout the 20th century, Mexican researchers improved and invented over a dozen antiv

How to Plan Your First Antelope Hunt Pronghorns are the gateway species for Western big-game hunters, and there’s a long season full of opportunity. Here’s when to go I wouldn’t go so far as to say a dead antelope buck smells good, but I don’t mind their odor a bit. There’s a hint of petting zoo goat — not necessarily repulsive in itself — mixed with dry Western air and sage and musk. All combined, somehow, the smell is sweet, and for me it always triggers good memories of hunting adventures far from home. Just about every Easterner ever to buy a deer tag has at some point dreamed of hunting out West. I talk to eager prospects every year, and many of them want to come out swinging, with designs on an elk hunt in the mountains. I love elk hunting, especially in September. But I always temper any encouragement I give with this reality: If you’re not going guided, you’re probably not going to kill an elk. Not your first year. If you’re prepared to pony up for a guided elk hunt, go

Algeria lifts 25 year long ban on hunting The Algerian government has announced it is lifting the ban on hunting imposed more than 25 years ago because of an Islamist insurgency that was raging at the time, this is according to a report by the BBC. The ban is said to have led to a surge in the population of boars, causing a big nuisance in rural areas where they damaged agricultural land. Authorized hunting will now be able to take place for the next six months, Agriculture Minister Abdelhamid Hamdani was quoted by the Algerian press agency as saying. In the early 1990s, the authorities decided to confiscate hunting guns and ban hunting after armed insurgents started to steal the weapons and use them in their attacks. The ban on hunting other animals and birds has also been lifted.

There's magic in the air. The first frosts of the year greet us each morning, and the tops of the highest peaks are dusted with snow. The colours are changing, and the Yukon's landscape is something to behold. It's moose hunting season, and I'm excited. What you'll see in these images is how tall the buckbrush in the valley is. You will have a few challenges if you want to stand in here and hunt moose. If you're lucky, the brush will make it impossible to see any bulls or cows further than a few hundred yards. Taking a shot? It's almost impossible unless the bull comes in hot to your call. I much prefer getting up on the hillsides around the valley where I can call effectively and glass massive areas. You can see one image of my father with the bull he shot. While we were down in the valley, we found a small hill to shoot from, and it gave use a fantastic shooting angle above the brush.

The Long Game There is still no cure for CWD, and unfortunately, the short-term outlook isn’t positive. Yet CWD won’t seriously affect herd numbers until a sufficiently high percentage of deer contract it, and that just hasn’t happened yet in most places. Each summer, I get excellent trail camera photos of outwardly healthy whitetails meandering through the hills and valleys of our farm, masking the CWD issues at hand. We still have high deer densities and mostly healthy looking whitetails, with no signs of a population decline. I asked Sumners when we might see whitetail populations decline in southern Wisconsin. “In areas like that, with such a large population of deer, the proportion of the population that will have to die from CWD for the average hunter to see a visible decline would have to be significant," he said. "It’s a numbers game, and we haven’t gotten to the point of the disease where population decline is occurring.” Still, knowing what we know, we’re torn about how to

How to Plant a Deer Orchard Should fruit trees be part of your program? Check out these tips for starting new trees Lush fields of clover, alfalfa and brassicas aren’t the only crops that will hold deer on your property. Once established, fruit trees can produce highly attractive forage for 40 years or more. The right trees produce edible fruit throughout the entire hunting season, drawing deer from a distance and holding them on your property. Select the Right Tree Deer will readily consume apples, pears, plums, persimmons, and mulberries. By planting a variety of trees, you can ensure at least one ripe food source throughout the season. Most fruit varieties are available in dwarf, semi-dwarf and standard sizes. Dwarf varieties mature around 8- to 10-feet tall and wide. They’re suitable for small spaces and can stand up to high winds better than larger trees. Their height also makes it easier for deer to reach fruit before it falls to the ground, though the small size of these trees

The nine Austrian hunting associations are strengthening their transnational cooperation. As a basis for this, they have developed the umbrella brand "Jagd Österreich". By uniting these associations under the JAGD ÖSTERREICH brand, Austria aims to strengthen its hunting community, enhance collaboration between regions, and promote responsible hunting as a key component of wildlife conservation and rural development. Austrian hunting associations united under umbrella brand “JAGD ÖSTERREICH”: 1. Bundesjägerkammer Österreich (Federal Hunters' Chamber of Austria). Setup trail cameras around major summer food sources (more on this below) and on trails to those food sources. Find tips on how to hang trail cameras properly, here. Trail camera pictures are only as useful as you make them. At the most basic level, they tell you if nice bucks are around. But what you’re really trying to figure out is where those nice bucks are heading, where they’re coming from, and where they might be vulnerable. To do that, you’ve got to really read the pictures, not just flip through them. For example, look to see if one of your target bucks is hanging out with a bachelor group of smaller bucks. That way, even if you don’t keep getting photos of the big buck, but capture shots of the smaller bucks, you can still gamble on the big buck’s general whereabouts (some of the wariest bucks are good at avoiding cameras). Years ago I got a trail camera shot of a buck with muddy legs. That told me he probably crossed a nearby swamp before coming out to feed. https://www.yo

Review of the Khan Arms Venator 12 ga: A Turkish Semi-Auto Worth Considering (But With Caveats) I've had the Khan Arms Venator in 12 gauge with the 760mm (30") barrel and the extra 610mm (24") rifled slug barrel for a couple of seasons now. Like many, I was drawn to it because it offered a lot of features for the price – a Turkish-made semi-auto, two barrels for versatility (bird shot and slugs), and a decent capacity of 5+1. Let's break it down: The Good Stuff Khan Arms Venator: Value for Money: This is the big one. You get a semi-auto action, two barrels, and a set of chokes for significantly less than a Beretta or Benelli. If you're on a budget and want a versatile shotgun, the Venator is definitely in the conversation. Versatility: The two-barrel setup is fantastic. The 30" barrel with chokes is great for upland birds, waterfowl, and even some clays. The 24" rifled slug barrel turns it into a capable deer gun. Being able to switch between them quickly is a real plus. Reliable

How to Stalk a Pronghorn Antelope The heat of the merciless sun pounded the back of my neck as I glassed through the small gap of the lone cedar bush I was crouched behind. His handsomely colored face and long curved black horns seemed to fill the viewfinder as I studied every inch of him. He was a dandy goat, and there was nothing more I wanted to do at that moment than wrap my hands around his black, 16-inch horns. This ground-crawling, torturous stalk began some two hours ago, and needless to say my body ached from the countless gouges, pokes and prods from the seemingly endless supply of needle-sharp plants that inhabit this semi-arid landscape. Although I had whittled the mile down to a mere 110 yards, I could go no farther. It wasn’t because of my lack of sheer will, there was just no cover between me and my bedded prize. I could easily have reached out and touched him with the help of modern ballistics, but I receive no satisfaction from that fact. I wanted to get archery-close

Review of the BURRIS 4-16x50 Scope with Rangefinder and Auto Ballistic Features As an avid firearms enthusiast, I’ve had the opportunity to test a variety of optics over the years, and I recently gave the BURRIS 4-16x50 scope with built-in rangefinder and auto ballistics a solid run during my range sessions. Macrozamia bush flavour for Australian aborigine hunters. Macrozamia are palm-shaped, dioecious plants with a usually unbranched trunk with several or many leaves. The leaves of the macrozamia are pinnate, pubescent, at least when young. Young macrozamia plants can differ significantly from adults in leaf details. The seeds of the macrozamia are almost spherical to oblong or elliptical in shape, with a red or, less often, yellow, orange or brown fleshy outer sarcotesta. Most parts of the macrozamia are toxic. Various species are the cause of livestock poisoning. The seeds of the macrozamia are poisonous, but the aborigines know how to handle them to remove the poison, and thus take advantage of the large amount of food provided by a single plant. Macrozamia seed cones form after some fire. Male and female seed cones form on separate plants, and large female seeds mature when they turn red or yellow. Seeds of macrozamia are a good source of starch, but when eaten without processing

How to Make Pemmican f you’ve ever had a meat or jerky bar made of finely chopped dried meat and perhaps berries, you may be familiar with pemmican. Pemmican consists of lean, dried meat – usually beef nowadays, but bison, deer, and elk were common back in the day) which is crushed to a powder and mixed with an equal amount of hot, rendered fat, usually beef tallow. Sometimes crushed, dried berries are added as well. For long periods of time, people can subsist entirely on pemmican, drawing on the fat for energy and the protein for strength, and glucose, when needed. MTFWP removes mountain lions from Wild Horse Island State Park Three adult mountain lions were recently removed from Wild Horse Island State Park in Montana. The decision came after the state and tribal officials deemed the animals a “public safety issue due to the high density and habituation,” according to KRTV News. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MTFWP) worked in collaboration with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) after receiving reports from both landowners and visitors. The island, which is 2,163 acres, is located on the south end of Flathead Lake. Both MTFWP and CKST worried that their presence would impact “one of the nation’s most important conservation herds of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep.” Because of how the island is situated, bighorn sheep have no escape route from the mountain lions. “Alongside prioritizing public safety, we felt it was important to protect one of the few disease-free bighorn sheep herds because of the role it plays in the great
