Looking back on a fantastic week in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. I treasure every trip I get to make to the GYE. This image was captured February of 2022. After listening to multiple groups of howls, we decided to position ourselves in between them in hopes we could catch a glimpse. After only 5hrs of being in the general area our patients paid off. To my surprise a beautiful young gray wolf appeared on the ridge above. With another pack across the river communicating with her I knew we were in for a treat. She boldly made her way down the ridge and towards us. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. I snapped what would be my favorite wolf shots to date. Utah closes shed hunting immediately Effective immediately, shed hunting is closed in Utah. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) announced the statewide emergency closure today in an effort to help deer and other big game across the state. This applies to both public and private land. The closure is in place Feb. 7 through April 30. Extreme cold and high snowpack are impacting deer in particular. Biologists have been monitoring herds across the state, checking on deer condition, body fat levels and fawn weights. Utah launches first wildlife law enforcement drone team It’s a bird, it’s a plane – nope, it’s a drone. And it’s part of Utah’s new conservation officer drone team aimed at keeping tabs on the hard-to-reach areas of the state. To date, there are five investigators located across the state who have completed the necessary Federal Aviation Administration licensing and training requirements for Unmanned Aerial Systems, according to a press release. “Using drones will help us more effectively solve wildlife crimes, and having trained law enforcement drone pilots will also allow us to assist other law enforcement agencies with search-and-rescue efforts or any other investigations,” said Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (UDWR) Captain Wade Hovinga. “Utah conservation officers are public servants, and these new tools will help us better serve the public, whether we’re solving poaching crimes or locating lost hunters.” UDWR compares the drone specialty designation to the K-9 conservation

New Jersey Bill Would Require Landowners to Notify Neighbors Before Hunting Their Own Land gislators in New Jersey introduced a bill last month that would change the state’s regulations for hunting on private land. Assembly Bill 3732 calls for an expanded safety buffer that would prohibit hunters from nocking an arrow or carrying a loaded weapon within 450 feet of any occupied building in the state. A3732 would also require private landowners in the state to notify neighboring landowners before they could be allowed to hunt on their own land. More specifically, the legislation would require landowners to “provide written notice to and obtain written confirmation from the owners and occupants of adjacent properties [prior to] any hunting activities.” That written notice must include the date, time, and length of the proposed hunt, and it must be delivered to neighboring properties at least 24 hours in advance of any hunting activities. Wolf season shuts down early in southwestern Montana Too many Yellowstone wolves have been trapped or killed by hunters during Montana’s wolf season, resulting in a call by wildlife commissioners to shut the season down early in the southwestern portion of the state. To date, 76 wolves have been reported killed. Once that number hits 82, hunting and trapping will be over for the area this season, according to the Associated Press. In December, Superintendent Cam Sholly asked commissioners to suspend hunting in areas along the park’s borders, stating that “park wolves spend only 5% of their time outside the park.” So far, 23 wolves from Yellowstone packs have been killed – 18 in Montana, three in Wyoming and two in Idaho – sparking park officials to worry that it could mark “a significant setback for the long-term viability” of these packs. To date, Hank has caused “extensive damage” to 33 properties and broken into about 28 homes in a Lake Tahoe neighborhood over the past few months, according to CNN. The latest break-in occurred on February 18. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department reported that the bear didn’t go into a garage after trash, but instead physically broke through a window into the home before managing to get out. Pennsylvania Will Finally Allow Limited Sunday Deer Hunting. Pennsylvania deer hunters have reason to celebrate after lawmakers have done away with a “blue law,” which prohibited hunting on Sundays in the Keystone State for more than 100 years. Gov. Tom Wolf is expected to sign the law, which will allow hunters to hunt one Sunday during rifle season, one Sunday during archery season, and one Sunday to be determined by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The law also requires hunters to have written permission to hunt private land on Sunday (oral permission is fine on the other six days of the week.) 1ste wolf geschoten in Oostenrijk In Oberösterreich (Opper-Oostenrijk), een deelstaat van Oostenrijk met als hoofdstad Linz, is in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag de eerste wolf geschoten, en dit sinds de nieuwe verordening inzake wolvenbeheer op 1 juli van kracht werd. Opper-Oostenrijk, amper 900km verwijderd van België, grenst aan Duitsland en Tsjechië, wat er meteen voor zorgt dat “wolvenbeheer” geen ver-van-mijn-bedshow meer is. Ging het om een probleemwolf? De wolf – om precies te zijn een vrouwtjeswolf – was al drie keer weggejaagd omdat ze haar natuurlijke schuwheid verloren had en mensen te dicht benaderde. Daarom was er sprake van een probleemwolf die volgens de nieuwe regelgeving vanaf 30 oktober kon geschoten worden. Manlike kameelperde bereik'n hoogte van tot 5,5—6,1 m (ongeveer 1/3 van die lengte is die nek) en weeg tot 9001200 kg. Vroulike voëls is gewoonlik effens kleiner en ligter.
