How Does Benelli’s Inertia-Driven System Work? A Hunter’s Deep Dive into Legendary Reliability

If you’ve ever shouldered a Benelli shot

How Does Benelli’s Inertia-Driven System Work? A Hunter’s Deep Dive into Legendary Reliability If you’ve ever shouldered a Benelli shotgun in the field, you’ve likely felt the difference. It’s not just the balance or the Italian craftsmanship - it’s the Inertia-Driven® system, the heart of Benelli’s semi-automatic legacy. As a lifelong hunter and firearms enthusiast, I’ve trusted this system in rain, snow, dust, and heat. Let me break down how it works, why it matters, and what makes it stand apart from gas-operated shotguns. ⚙️ The Core Principle: Recoil, Not Gas Unlike gas-operated shotguns that siphon off combustion gases to cycle the action, Benelli’s Inertia-Driven system uses pure recoil energy. When you fire a shell, the entire shotgun moves backward—except for the bolt body, which momentarily resists due to inertia. This delay compresses a spring between the bolt head and bolt body. Once the spring reaches full compression, it expands, driving the bolt rearward to eject the

PREDATOR HUNTING—HOW TO GET STARTED THE EASY WAY CLASSIC COYOTE SETUPS There are three basic types of coyote hunts: A silent stand in which you post up and hope to shoot coyotes passing by. A calling stand in which you hunker down and call coyotes into gun range; What I call a “run-and-gun hunt” in which you drive rural roads and stop periodically to call, then set up when you get a response. 1. SILENT STANDS Looking at the silent stand, your standard deer-season treestand or ground blind can work beautifully, especially if it is situated between deer feeding and bedding areas. Those are the same habitats that coyotes work, so as long as the wind is favorable—that is, blowing away from where you expect to see coyotes—then you should expect a shot. This silent-stand hunting is not a numbers game. You are relying on a dog to simply show itself, and if you shoot, or do anything to alert animals that you’re in the area, then you might be in for a long, slow day. But you can make good

How the return of poaching threatens India’s tiger success story The poachers who killed T32 in India’s Madhya Pradesh had a simple plan, and executed it at night. Running wire through a field and applying a strong current, they electrocuted the tigress as she patrolled her territory, beating her to death after she lost consciousness. They then pulled out her canines, whiskers and claws before dumping the body in a village well, weighted down by a stone. T32 was declared missing by rangers, until three days later the stone gave way and her remains floated up to the surface of the well. The grim image of the tigress’s mutilated body floating in the water sent ripples of outrage through the conservation community. Here in the dense forests in the heart of central India, the reserves of Madhya Pradesh are playing a crucial role in what the government says is the success story of Project Tiger. Launched 50 years ago, the country’s flagship conservation programme has seen tiger numbers r

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as th

Dove Hunting 101: From Cornfield to Kitchen Flying targets are very difficult for most people, and dove are some of the most challenging of them all. With that in mind, let’s take a few minutes to ensure your shots count this year in the dove field. The fundamentals of shooting a shotgun are vital to becoming a successful dove hunter, as there are many things that contribute to actually hitting the target. You must avoid mental breakdowns and learn how to keep your mind from getting in the way of your fundamentals. In this article we will look in-depth at what those fundamentals are. Stance Your stance when shooting a shotgun should be different from shooting other guns. The placement of your feet is critical in having a smooth motion when taking a shot. For right-handed shooters, stand with your left foot in front of your right, about shoulder width apart or just under. Shift your weight slightly toward your lead foot to help brace yourself for the recoil of the shotgun. If the bir

Lamb Karahi Lamb Karahi is one of our favourite lamb curry dishes, and we're telling you now, it is well worth the time and effort to make. Why is it our favourite? The combinations of ingredients make a flavour that's hard to resist. It has a good amount of heat, while the sweet tomatoes, combined with the thick, rich, gravy-like sauce, is pretty moreish. We also love it because you can use cheaper cuts of lamb, which lends itself perfectly to the longer cooking time, meaning you're left with tender pieces of meat at the end. Where is Lamb Karahi from? Mughlai Karahi Gosht gets its name from the deep, circular pots it's traditionally cooked in (like a wok with two handles). It's particularly popular in North Indian, Bangladeshi and Pakistani cuisine (although ingredients will always differ). It's essentially a fragrant, slow-cooked lamb stew made with a rich tomato, garlic, green chilli and garam masala curry base. What other meat can be used in a Karahi dish? Chicken kara

Tennessee Moves to Later Turkey Season, 2-Bird Bag Limit, No Fanning on Public Land After extensive discussion and comment, the Tennessee Fish and Wildlife Commission approved big changes for next year's turkey hunters The Tennessee Fish & Wildlife Commission voted on a slew of big changes for the 2023 spring turkey season during a series of open meetings June 2 and 3, 2022. You can watch the full meetings here and here. So what do the changes look like? The first is actually a change to the trapping regulations, with a year-round trapping season now allowed for raccoons and opossums — critters that are considered among the worst nest predators of wild turkeys. The hunting season for those animals will remain as-is (July 1 to March 15), but the daily bag limit for both species will be doubled for hunters. As for turkeys, the Spring 2023 bag limit will be reduced from three birds to two, only one of which can be a jake. There was a lengthy discussion about stopping the harvest of jake

Hunting Perch with Waterfowl Calls From mid-winter through ice-out, Devils Lake guide Jason Feldner “hunts” perch with a system he says can’t be beat. Relying on highly detailed GPS mapping and electronics, signs from Mother Nature and a ‘three call’ system, Feldner quickly locates and ices big perch, day-in-day-out. “When it comes to finding fish, you’ve gotta key in on slight 1-foot depth contours—especially for perch. In mid- and late winter, a good place to start is that 8- to 15-foot range,” says Feldner. Like birds following a migration path, perch slowly travel specific depth contours from mid-winter through late ice to reach their spring spawning areas. “If you can’t get right on those one-foot contours and follow the perch, you’re gonna have a tough time staying on the action,” says Feldner. But to get the contour right, sink an Aqua-Vu camera, and you’ll spy a stockyard of yellow, green and black bars moving amidst swarms of shrimp. “That’s what I try to put my clients on

Deep Water Haunts Bass fishing this time of year often corresponds with deep water. In much of the country, bass move offshore and school up to chase open-water baitfish. Offshore structure and cover like river ledges, deep weed beds, rock piles, wing-dams, and deep boat docks can all be dissected with a drop-shot. It particularly excels as a clean-up hitter. Once you catch a few fish from an offshore hot-spot using traditional cranking and worm techniques, pitch a drop-shot in and see what bites. It will often surprise you. The key to this style of fishing is to get the boat near, or over your target. From there, let the bait down until it makes contact with the bottom, and begin a series of light shakes of the worm. You want the bait to move, but not the sinker. This sounds touchy, but it’s easy to get the hang of it. Most experienced drop-shot fishermen call this “shaking slack.” After a little practice, you’ll get the feel of allowing your bait to flutter and sink on a slack line,

Baboons VS Leopard Kruger National Park visitors witnessed an incredible incident that occurred near a popular picnic spot in the park. In South Africa, a large family of baboons attacked a leopard that decided to grab one of them as prey. The video shows the predator (leopard) walking along the road and then abruptly running up to the unsuspecting baboons. However, one of them, the largest, rushes in response to help his relatives. Due to their numerical advantage and lightning-fast response, the baboons managed to drive away the predatory leopard. Among the "audience" were newlyweds Merv Mersinligil and Victor Shontag, who told the press about what they saw. Merv remembers: "I jokingly told my husband: "Maybe we should warn the baboons about the leopard we just saw. And he laughed." But a moment later, the leopard was ready to spring! The baboon is widespread in Central and Eastern Africa. It lives in steppe and mountainous areas. It feeds on plant (fruits, bulbs, etc.) and anima

Beretta Shotgun Chokes selection: Mastering Your Pattern for Hunting Success For Beretta shotgun owners, understanding choke selection is critical to maximizing your success in the field. The right choke transforms your shotgun from a general-purpose tool into a precision instrument tailored to specific game and hunting scenarios. Here's what you need to know, stripped down to the essentials. Why Choke Matters: Beyond the Basics Choke isn't just about tightening or loosening the shot pattern. It's about energy management. By constricting the shot as it exits the barrel, you control the density and effective range of your pattern. A tighter choke holds the pattern together longer, delivering more pellets on target at greater distances. A more open choke spreads the pattern quickly, ideal for close-range, fast-moving targets. Beretta Choke Systems: Identifying Yours Beretta uses several choke systems. The most common are: Mobilchoke: Found on many older and some current Beretta

From My Blind to Yours: How I Choose Shotgun Shells for Hunting I’ve been hunting since I was old enough to carry a shotgun, and if there’s one lesson I’ve learned the hard way, it’s this: the wrong shell can cost you the shot of a lifetime. Whether you’re after birds or big game, knowing your ammo matters. This isn’t theory — it’s what I’ve figured out over seasons of trial, error, and a few missed opportunities. --- 🎯 First Things First: Understand Your Shell Every shotgun shell has three parts: • Casing — holds everything together • Primer — ignites the powder • Payload — either birdshot (multiple pellets), buckshot (larger pellets), or a slug (single projectile) You also need to match your shell to your shotgun’s gauge and chamber length. I shoot mostly 12-gauge, but I’ve used 20-gauge for lighter setups. Don’t assume — check your barrel markings before loading anything. --- 🐦 Birdshot: My Go-To for Feathered Game When I’m hunting birds — dove, pheasant, ducks — I use bi

Skylarks, starlings and mistle thrushes: Endangered songbirds licensed to be killed for sport in UK Skylarks, starlings and mistle thrushes are among the red-listed species approved to be hunted by falconers. Should endangered wild birds be hunted for sport? It sounds like an odd question to be asking in 2023, in the midst of a biodiversity crisis. Yet, at a time when many avian species in the UK are under threat of regional extinction, government data reveals falconers are permitted to hunt rare songbirds. The data, released this week by government watchdog Natural England, has caused concern among environmentalists. What is falconry and how is it regulated in the UK? Falconry involves hunting wild animals in their natural habitat using a trained bird of prey. There are reportedly around 25,000 falconers in the UK. The sport itself dates back hundreds of years, and it has seen a resurgence in recent times. While it remains legal throughout Britain, many outside the hobby are u

Looking back on a fantastic week in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. I treasure every trip I get to make to the GYE. This image was captured February of 2022. After listening to multiple groups of howls, we decided to position ourselves in between them in hopes we could catch a glimpse. After only 5hrs of being in the general area our patients paid off. To my surprise a beautiful young gray wolf appeared on the ridge above. With another pack across the river communicating with her I knew we were in for a treat. She boldly made her way down the ridge and towards us. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. I snapped what would be my favorite wolf shots to date. This experience brings me back year after year. The GYE is truly like no where else on earth! Canon R5 Canon RF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM

Bullets now are long and streamlined, tipped with space-age material, and constructed of copper married to lead through special bonding processes. They are incredibly accurate, highly aerodynamic, and boast superb terminal performance. They are the finest killing projectiles the world has ever known; that’s a great thing for us as hunters. First Look: Garmin Xero A1i Pro Bow Sight Are you ready to take the next step in archery technology? Technological advancements in the hunting world continue to make hunters more successful. Jack O’Connor felt that one of the most significant advancements to hunting was the modern riflescope. It would be interesting to hear what Mr. O’Connor would have to say today about modern optics. The optics community has snowballed and includes all aspects of the archery world. Fred Bear shot a 65-pound recurve bow, inspiring generations of archers to take up the sport. Bear’s early videos made hunting with a bow adventurous and appealing. Many archers still embrace the basics and shoot instinctively. However, there are modern advancements that allow archers to be more successful. The advent of the compound bow was a huge step. Moving from brass pins to fiber-optic sights showed a clear advantage—carbon arrows overtook the established aluminum arrow market. Speed ratings for bows continue to c

How many crocodile teeth? What is special about crocodile teeth? How strong is a crocodile bite? The teeth of the crocodiles order are remarkable (and they are placed in a reinforced skull with the most powerful biting muscles). Do crocodiles lose their teeth with age? Extant crocodiles are polyphiodonts, that is, their teeth are continually replaced during a large part of their life. Firstly, each tooth is renewed in 1-2 years (their teeth are hollow inside, and brand-new and sharp teeth develop in these cavities as they wear out). Secondly, unlike most reptiles, crocodiles have a peculiar differentiation of teeth in size, shape, and even function. At the beginning of each jaw, there are four large canine teeth that serve to effectively capture prey. In the middle of the jaw, the teeth are thicker, increase in length more evenly and form a kind of scissor bite that allows you to cut the fillets of the deceased corpse of the captured victim. At the base of the jaw, the teeth expa

There's magic in the air. The first frosts of the year greet us each morning, and the tops of the highest peaks are dusted with snow. The colours are changing, and the Yukon's landscape is something to behold. It's moose hunting season, and I'm excited. What you'll see in these images is how tall the buckbrush in the valley is. You will have a few challenges if you want to stand in here and hunt moose. If you're lucky, the brush will make it impossible to see any bulls or cows further than a few hundred yards. Taking a shot? It's almost impossible unless the bull comes in hot to your call. I much prefer getting up on the hillsides around the valley where I can call effectively and glass massive areas. You can see one image of my father with the bull he shot. While we were down in the valley, we found a small hill to shoot from, and it gave use a fantastic shooting angle above the brush.
