Ernest Hemingway and the Leopard Photo: A Story of Myth. One of the most iconic images of Ernest Hemingway shows the famed American author standing triumphantly beside the carcass of a large leopard in the African bush, a rifle slung over his shoulder. Dressed in safari gear, his expression is characteristically stoic—confident, weathered, and self-assured. The photograph, taken during his 1933–1934 African safari, has long been interpreted as a testament to Hemingway’s prowess as a big-game hunter, reinforcing his public image as a rugged adventurer and master of the wild. But the truth behind the image is far more nuanced—and revealing—than the myth it helped create. The Leopard That Wasn’t His Contrary to popular belief, Hemingway did not shoot the leopard in the photograph. At the time the photo was taken, he had actually failed to bring down the animal himself. The leopard had been killed by Mayito Menocal, a young Cuban friend and fellow member of the safari party. Hemingway,

American Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary in polar expedition gear aboard his ship SS Roosevelt, 1908. In the frigid expanse of the Arctic Ocean, where ice stretched endlessly and the sun barely peeked above the horizon, stood one of America’s most daring explorers, Robert Edwin Peary. It was the year 1908, a time when the world's eyes were fixed on the North Pole, an elusive goal that had captivated the imagination of adventurers for centuries. Peary, aboard his sturdy ship, the SS Roosevelt, prepared for what would be his final and most ambitious expedition to reach the top of the world. The SS Roosevelt, named after the then-President Theodore Roosevelt who had supported Peary’s endeavors, was a specially designed vessel built to withstand the crushing grip of pack ice. Its reinforced hull, thick timbers, and powerful engine made it one of the few ships capable of navigating the treacherous waters of the Arctic. But even with such a formidable vessel, the journey ahead was fraugh

Buck Holes Search for what I call buck holes, which are tangles of honeysuckle or wild rose on ridges, cedar or pine thickets, brushy beaver swamps … you get the idea. A buck hole doesn’t have to be large or even remote — just a thick spot other hunters overlook. A grassy ditch near a back road, an overgrown hog lot behind an old barn or a similar neglected spot can hide a big buck. Scour an aerial map for such pockets or strips of cover. Check the edges of a thicket or swamp for trails pocked with big tracks. Look for rubs and late scrapes, which are signs that a buck has moved back in there to evade hunters and breed a last willing doe. When you find a mother lode of fresh sign, stop right there. You don’t want to bust into a small security area, put more heat on already wired deer and bust them out of there. It’s better to back off 100 yards or so and set up on a ridge or point where you can cover buck entry and exit routes into and out of cover.

Vector Optics Continental X6 5-30x56 Review I've spent the last few months putting the Vector Optics Continental X6 5-30x56 MBR FFP through its paces, mounted on my trusty rifle with the included one-piece Picatinny mount. I'm not going to sugarcoat anything, just giving you the straight dope from a hunter who actually uses his gear. Vector Optics Continental X6 5-30x56 - The Good: Crystal Clear Glass: Seriously, the glass is impressive for the price. Edge-to-edge clarity is excellent, and I was able to pick out details in low light situations better than I expected. This is a huge plus when you're trying to identify game at dawn or dusk. First Focal Plane (FFP) Reticle: This is a must-have for me. The MBR reticle is well-designed, not too cluttered, and allows for accurate holdovers at any magnification. I really appreciate how the reticle subtensions stay consistent, making long-range shots much more predictable. Solid Build Quality: The scope feels robust and well-made. The tu

The 5 Best Thermal Monoculars of 2024 Everybody wants to know what goes bump in the night, even if it doesn’t bump and even if it’s not nighttime. Happily, thermal monoculars, a new and energetic category of gear, often identify what used to be invisible. They can help you see everything from human intruders on the other side of a fence, to coyotes and raccoons crouching in the dark, to a problematic wire in a household electrical outlet. We’re talking about monoculars, rangefinders, and cameras that use temperature variations, rather than visible light, to form images that can be captured as photographs or videos, or simply delivered to your eye to answer that ancient question: what’s out there? I’ve used this new class of “optics” over the past year to find newborn calves in a deadly blizzard, to find my ice-fishing buddies in the fog, to detect hidden electrical problems that might burn my house down, to hunt coyotes at midnight, and to finally even the odds on crop-raiding feral

Making the Traditional Bow Switch Trading your compound bow for a recurve adds a whole new twist to your bowhunting experience Over the past few years, traditional archery has surged in popularity among recreational shooters and bowhunters alike. For many, making the switch from a compound to a recurve or long bow is a way to increase the challenge of a hunt; for others, it’s a way to embrace the simplicity of traditional archery. Choosing to bowhunt with traditional gear not only requires hunters to get closer to game but also to spend a significant amount of time practicing with their equipment to become proficient. When it comes to equipment selection and shooting style, there are many differences between a stick bow and a wheel bow that can be confusing for traditional newcomers. So, I recruited the help of long-time traditional bowhunter Travis “T-Bone” Turner to help you understand where to get started with traditional archery. In Horn of the Hunter, Robert Ruark describes two Cape buffalo he took on his first safari, in 1951, in (then) Tanganyika with Harry Selby. The first was wounded and gave the pair a hell of a time until he finally succumbed. The second, which had much bigger and more massive horns, was also wounded, and disappeared into a dense thicket. Selby and Ruark looked at each other, then sat down to smoke a cigarette. As the minutes wore on, Ruark became more and more anxious about what was to come. Then Selby invited him to accompany him as he went after the buffalo — a serious compliment as you know if you’ve ever been in that situation. Ruark steeled himself, checked his .470, and off they went. The tracking took some time. It probably seemed much longer than it was, but that’s the way these things work, as they crept along, expecting a charge at any second.

4 Tips to Prevent and Treat Snakebites in Dogs Do You Know How to Keep Your Dog Safe from Snakes? A dog encounters all sorts of hazards in the field when you open the crate, drop the tailgate and start hunting. Venomous snakes are but one. Some states around the country present a more perilous scenario for such interactions, while others provide less. Ways to prevent and treat snake bites, shared courtesy of Purina Pro Plan, follow: 1. Know Before You Go Familiarize yourself with the types of snakes native to the area in which you live or are traveling to for a hunt or field trial. Learn which species of venomous snakes are present, the habitats they prefer, and their “personalities.” 2. Snakeproof Your Dog Although you can’t completely eliminate the risk of a snakebite, you can prepare your dog to react to an offensive strike by enrolling him or her in a snake-avoidance clinic. This training conditions a dog to give any snake he or she encounters via sight, smell or sound the widest
