Hunting With Dogs: Training & Safety Tips Hunting with your dog is an exhilarating way to experience outdoor life with your furred friend. Dogs have been hunting with humans for millennia. Many hunting breeds were actually developed specifically to find, flush out, or retrieve game. But that doesn’t mean that your dog will automatically know what to do on a hunt. Before you head out in search of game with your canine companion, you’ll need to train your dog. Aside from helping you find and retrieve the quarry you’re after, dogs also must become used to loud sounds like gunshots. You’ll also need to bring along the proper hunting gear necessary to keep your dog safe and satisfied in the field. Get Your Dog Used To Gunshots Gunshots are loud and can spook your dog into running off in the middle of a hunt. That’s why gun training is so important. Cara Harper is an expert in the field who regularly hunts with her Labrador Retrievers, Nita and Rou. Harper and her husband trained their pu

Making the Traditional Bow Switch Trading your compound bow for a recurve adds a whole new twist to your bowhunting experience Over the past few years, traditional archery has surged in popularity among recreational shooters and bowhunters alike. For many, making the switch from a compound to a recurve or long bow is a way to increase the challenge of a hunt; for others, it’s a way to embrace the simplicity of traditional archery. Choosing to bowhunt with traditional gear not only requires hunters to get closer to game but also to spend a significant amount of time practicing with their equipment to become proficient. When it comes to equipment selection and shooting style, there are many differences between a stick bow and a wheel bow that can be confusing for traditional newcomers. So, I recruited the help of long-time traditional bowhunter Travis “T-Bone” Turner to help you understand where to get started with traditional archery. Select a Bow If you think there are a lot of optio

5 Snow Goose Stops You’ve Never Tried Chasing spring snow geese is one of the fastest growing pursuits in hunting, and with good reason. The most obvious of its attractions are the tens of millions of birds that string out from Texas to the Canadian tundra and from the coast of California to the Eastern Shore. But as the spring migration has ballooned, so has the hunting competition. Meanwhile, it takes plenty of gear and cash to get into the game: e-callers, massive decoy rigs, pallets of ammunition and gasoline for finding fresh birds for the next day’s flight. You might wonder why we go to the trouble. But if you spend one day under twisting white flocks with 10 shotgun shells in an extension magazine before you run it to the plug again and again, you’ll understand. Arkansas, Missouri and South Dakota are the hotbeds for chasing the reverse migration, but a few places are still devoid of big crowds, no matter if you’re a do-it-yourself or pay-to-play hunter. These are one of the most important hunting tips for starters. Stealth and Silence Always be as quiet as you possibly can. Even the faintest twig, branch, clothing and equipment rattling will alert the animals. Dress appropriately, gear up lightly, and don’t use velcro clothing or anything that would make a lot of noise. Navigating Your Surroundings Become acquainted and scout out the hunting area. Depending on which game animals you hunt, it’s always a good idea to familiarize yourself with the perimeter, and use landmarks so you won’t get lost. Patience Goes a Long Way Many hunters don’t have the patience to acquire a clean shot. There’s a lot of waiting, but it pays off in the end when a deer appears on your scope. Persistence is key. Mind Your Scent Animals have heightened senses, and it’s a good idea to become as odorless as possible. There are many chemicals and cosmetic products that mask your scents. That means no smoking, no alcohol, and no smelly food. The wind factor is a

ORANGE IS A NEW BLACK Stay safe when hunting by following these tips: -Check weather reports before embarking on a hunting trip. -Tell someone where you will be hunting and when you will return. -Be familiar with the area you want to hunt. Bring a map and compass. -Carry a basic survival kit and be prepared for an unexpected overnight stay in the field. The survival kit should contain a rope, a knife, water, waterproof matches, an emergency shelter, and first aid supplies. -Dress properly and be prepared for the worst possible conditions. -Wear hunter orange as your outermost gear so that you are visible to other hunters. Do not wear white or tan during deer season. -Always treat your weapon as if it is loaded, even if it isn't, and know where your hunter partners are located at all times. -If accompanied by a dog, the dog should also wear hunter orange or a very visible color on a vest, leash, coat or bandana. Check the state regulations to determine if a dog is allowed on a hunt. -

Proljetni lov, najočekivaniji i najprometniji. THE WOLF OF MY DREAMS!!!… The challenges of wolf hunting- you sit there staring into space, in a fog, your mind goes numb, for who knows how long… then all of a sudden, it happens. And when you spot a wolf, or a pack of wolves, your emotions REDLINE!!! You go from a lethargic daze to gasping for air… IT’S WILD!!! Let me tell you the story of this wolf… My friend Mark McKay, Richy and I were climbing in our blind at daybreak. I was sliding my feet into the bottom of my Heater Body Suit and just about to zip it up when I heard someone say, “WOLVES!!!” Remember the emotions I was telling you about. 🤯🤯🤯… Mark scooted into the blind and informed us he had just seen the whole pack, and they were coming our way! I quietly racked a shell in my Browning 7mm, and gave myself a pep talk about gathering my “chickens!” Eight wolves came into sight!!! They were about 170 yards away down over the ledge of a beaver dam. They held up just barely in a small shooting lane. That’s when I noti

🏆2022 Guide of the Year: TYNE MCCAUGHEY!🤠 All of the award buckles every year are pretty cut and dry and require no thoughts, just a tape measure. However, the Guide of the Year buckle is a whole other story and it gets harder every year. We are so lucky and blessed to have such a solid core of amazing guides that it’s become torturous to pick just one stand out. After many hours of pillow talks, road trip talks, and head scratching, we feel very good choosing our great friend, Tyne McCaughey, for Guide of the Year. Tyne has proven his loyalty from the get-go. His tenacity as a hunter is unquestionable. His hunters all comment that he is like hunting with a buddy. “Tyne ain’t faking shit!”💪 His willingness to do whatever is needed in camp or the field to make the dream work does not go unnoticed. As tough and as old-school as Tyne is, I’ve been told by our younger assistants and trainee guides that Tyne has great patience in helping teach them all aspects of our profession.

7 Reasons Why OTC Elk Tags Beat Draw Tags If you want to spend more time in the elk woods and have more chances to succeed, then over-the-counter elk tags are the way to go At least four different bulls bugled practically nonstop all morning long as I flanked a herd swarmed by satellite bulls. One beautiful 6x6 with a lovesick bugle grew attached to my cow calling around midmorning, but when he got to 60 yards — no shot opportunity — and didn’t see a cow, his interest fizzled. He rejoined the ensemble of bugling bulls. I continued chasing bugles, and at around noon, I came eye to eye with a massive old 6x6 at 14 yards. A well-placed arrow into the front of his chest quickly took effect, and my first bull ever was down within 100 yards. That hunt wasn’t guided, or in a unit that took me years to draw. It was instead on an over-the-counter tag on U.S. Forest Service lands. We’re often told that OTC hunting looks nothing like the hunts seen on outdoor television. While the hunt I had isn’

How to Hunt Africa on a Budget Chances Are You Can Do It Cheaper Than a Premium Elk Hunt My palms hurt and my knees were bloody from crawling over rocks. My legs ached. My lungs were threatening to quit on me if I had to climb one more mountain chasing a herd that was skittish to the point of paranoia. The guide and I had pursued them up and over so many mountains and glassed them from so many hidden vantage points that I had no idea how much territory we had covered or how we’d ever find our way back to the truck. When the shot opportunity finally came, it was a long one — 320 yards from our spot on a hill to where the bull was feeding on the opposite ridge. “Hold a foot high,” the guide said, and that turned out to be dead accurate. The cows scattered in a panic at the blast, and not long afterward we were standing over a mature bull I had worked harder for than any animal I’ve taken before or since. Sounds like a fairly typical elk hunt, right? Except it wasn’t an elk and I wasn’t

Deer season is over

The Right Way to Clean and Store Your Hunting Rifle Properly caring for your deer gun’s barrel and action ensures it’ll be ready to go again next fall Deer season is over, and now is the perfect time to give your rifle a thorough annual cleaning. Store your gun in a secure and rust-free environment and it will be in good working order when you break it out for a range session in a few months. Gun-Cleaning Gear To do the job right, you need to secure your rifle horizontally in a vise. A vise attached to a workbench at your house will work fine. Or you can purchase a portable gun vise from a company that specializes in firearms-cleaning accessories. Spend $40 or more for a universal gun-cleaning kit, which will include a three-piece bore rod and an assortment of jags, brushes, patches, and other accessories for cleaning not only your bolt-action, but also other handguns and long guns that you own. Also, and this is important, purchase a bore guide, which will protect the bore and action

Wolf season shuts down early in southwestern Montana Too many Yellowstone wolves have been trapped or killed by hunters during Montana’s wolf season, resulting in a call by wildlife commissioners to shut the season down early in the southwestern portion of the state. To date, 76 wolves have been reported killed. Once that number hits 82, hunting and trapping will be over for the area this season, according to the Associated Press. In December, Superintendent Cam Sholly asked commissioners to suspend hunting in areas along the park’s borders, stating that “park wolves spend only 5% of their time outside the park.” So far, 23 wolves from Yellowstone packs have been killed – 18 in Montana, three in Wyoming and two in Idaho – sparking park officials to worry that it could mark “a significant setback for the long-term viability” of these packs. Currently, there are only 91 wolves within the park borders, according to spokesperson Morgan Warthin. As goHUNT previously reported, the state

Ethiopia: May trophies The more trophies a hunter has in his trophy arsenal, the greater the desire to look for new, unusual and rare species. The more difficult, but interesting the trips for them. ❓ How many times in a lifetime can you go to 🇳🇦 Namibia or 🇿🇦 South Africa for antelopes? Certainly several, thanks to their availability. ❗️But let's take 🇪🇹 Ethiopia, for example. A gorgeous hunting destination! ### Sunset in Nature There is something profoundly magical about witnessing a sunset in the great outdoors. As the sun begins its descent, painting the sky with vibrant hues of orange, pink, and purple, the world seems to pause in reverence of nature's daily spectacle. #### The Beauty of Color Sunsets offer a mesmerizing display of colors that gradually change as the sun dips below the horizon. The sky transforms into a canvas where shades blend seamlessly, creating a breathtaking view that captivates anyone lucky enough to witness it. Photographers and artists often seek out sunsets for their natural beauty, finding endless inspiration in the fleeting moments of twilight. #### Peace and Tranquility Being in nature as the sun sets brings a profound sense of peace and tranquility. The gentle fading of daylight often coincides with a drop in temperatures and the softening of sounds, making the environment feel calm and serene.

EUROPEAN HUNT The European Hunt is the perfect fit for those looking for a unique and challenging pheasant hunting experience. It also provides an alternative for those not able to field hunt. The course is set near the top of small hill in the midst of a pasture. The hunt is comprised of 16 shooters positioned at eight blinds. The blinds are ~60 yards apart and encircle a concealed tower from which pheasants are released. There are two shooters at each blind, safely separated by hay bales. Cub Creek Hunting guides and guide dogs are positioned behind the blinds, ready to retrieve each harvested bird. Large evergreens dominate the landscape, making each shot unpredictable and unique. Hunters rotate through each station twice, ensuring an abundance of shooting from all directions. A beverage break during the middle of the hunt allows hunters to trade stories and prepare for the final round. A hearty meal is served at noon prior to the hunt. Enjoy desserts and beverages afterwards whi

Mountain hunting in 🇿🇦 South Africa? A target at 500, 600, 700 meters and even further? Yes! If these are the green hills of the Eastern Cape province and hunting wild pigs. 👍 A very interesting hunting format - tracking from afar, and then sneaking up on the mountains and, if possible, a long-range shot. 1️⃣ First, traditionally drive up by car, 2️⃣ then climb higher, find a comfortable position and 3️⃣ binoculars neighboring hills. Telescopes were very useful. Now is the most active time - the rut of wild pigs. No need for bait, ambush near water - this is unnecessary now. All the action is in the mountains and a patient hunter will not miss it! 👉 It is worth noting that the trophies of foothill pigs are excellent: the size is impressive, the weight is under 80-90 kg - this is not a warthog (!), but almost a bushpig. The fangs are also decent. The number of trophies for a 5-day tour is from several to several dozen. Depends on desire and possibilities. 👐 Who wants to spend a

A beaver may seem like a harmful animal, but in fact his diligence and desire to transform landscapes for himself are so strong that they are more than successful. What kind of landscape does a beaver need? Swampy. With bushes that have delicious bark, with a deep enough reservoir in which you can stash branches for the winter until spring. How is this beneficial to nature? For example, during one year, a hectare of wetlands absorbs 7-15 times more carbon dioxide from the air than a hectare of forest: 550-1800 kg; and emits 7-15 times more oxygen: 260-700 kg. Numerous mollusks and aquatic insects settle in the spill created by beavers, which in turn attract muskrats and waterfowl. The fish, once in favorable conditions (and the beaver deepens the reservoir and creates a network of channels), begins to multiply faster. Trees felled by beavers serve as food for hares and many ungulates, which gnaw bark from trunks and branches. The sap flowing out of the eroded trees in spring is l

In Kazakhstan, you can hunt ibex in different places. To combine hunting with maral and roe deer, we choose the Dzungarian Alatau region. All this at the beginning of the season. For those looking only for ibex or ibex with exceptional trophy qualities, we recommend the region on the border with 🇰🇬 Kyrgyzstan - Granitogorsk - and hunting in a colder period - October-December. ⛰ The mountains simply go into the sky and only perseverance and a reliable team of guides help. We had a whole day's trek. From dawn to dusk, including an ascent of 4000 m. Almost the entire way on foot. But depending on the weather and other conditions, horses are also used. Minus 5.5 thousand calories per day, 25-28 km of travel. And the inclusion of the final 💪 moral and volitional on the descent. The ibex is bagged, happy with the trophy, but most of all ➡️ proud and pleased with himself! Such overcomings are remembered for a lifetime. For Larry, it was truly the hunt of a lifetime! ❗️ The area is bein

Hunting the Snowshoe Hare It’s hard to imagine a winter day spent more pleasantly than stalking through Alaska’s taiga hunting the snowshoe hare. There’s not a better reason to explore the reaches of our well-forested state, and there’s not an animal that’s better-suited to live there. Some days you find them, some days you don’t. To me this dichotomy represents the greatest draw of hunting hares: They’re routinely elusive but occasionally attainable, at once an animal that children’s hunting dreams are made of yet still wholly capable of making even the wisest feel like an idiot. I hunt hares exclusively with a rimfire rifle equipped with open sights. Yes, beagles and shotguns and loyal compatriots would probably be more effective, but I prefer to give the hare his refuges of invisibility and speed. If I can bag him in spite of those advantages, I like to think I’ve surmounted some pinnacle of woodsmanship and truly deserve the added weight in my vest. Or maybe I’m just full of it

How Do You Start Squirrel Hunting? There are no large requirements that are needed to start hunting squirrels. If you have a strong desire to capture, you may choose the small game rodent as a starting point. They are mainly the best to hunt because they are available in every tree crotch and almost every season, especially the winter. Most states require you to have a license if you want to hunt the rodents legally. The grant is for the small game residents, and squirrels qualify as part of them. You can kill them using an air rifle, shotgun, or shot rifle. To begin your hunting experience, you can make your way to the trees or bushes in the mid-mornings or the late afternoon. Wait for the squirrels, and you will have your first kill within minutes Squirrel Hunting Tips The little creatures may be abundant, but hunting them is not an easy task as it seems. Some essential tips that will ensure your outdoor experience is successfully are explained below: 1. Know where to hunt Yo

Will Brantley and Mike Hanback talk long-range glassing, big bucks in Indiana, and pre-season plans in the Realtree Outpost podcast It's late August and still hot, but there's hope in the air, too. Kentucky's squirrel season opened this past weekend, and Tennessee's early three-day "velvet" archery season opened today. With luck, I'll be in a treestand this weekend. We're right on the eve of one of the best times of year, and there's no better time to debut Season 3 of Realtree's Outpost Podcast. This week, I joined fellow blogger and Big Deer TV host Mike Hanback to discuss a variety of pre-season topics. We covered long-range glassing tactics (as detailed here), and discussed why they're still so effective, especially in the early season, and even more so than trail cameras. We discussed plans for this fall, strategies for hunting the drought-stricken West, and personal goals for another season. Then we shifted gears to talk about Josh Honeycutt's recent (and fascinating) story on
