HUNTING DOG BREEDS: WHICH DOG TO CHOOSE FOR HUNTING A brief overview of the main hunting dog breeds will be useful to novice hunters when choosing dogs for hunting. Different hunting dog breeds have their own specialization. For example, with hounds and greyhounds, hunting dogs mainly hunt hare and fox. Duck hunting will be successful with cops. Read on to find out which dog to choose for hunting. Which dog to choose for hunting What could be more disturbing than walking through the autumn forest with a dog and a gun in search of game. And even if the trophy does not meet, the pleasure of unity with nature will be received. Of course, hunting is indispensable without dogs. But first of all, how do you choose the breed of hunting dogs, especially what kind of animal do you propose to hunt

8 Great New Hunting Rifles for 2022 Though I absolutely love those rifles which have been with me for decades, and have shared so many indelible memories, I still get excited to see the new crop of rifles introduced each year, and always ponder the possibilities of creating new memories with a new model. A hunting rifle can become a life-long friend, but like any friend, there’s the first time you meet, and like so many friendships, sometimes things don’t work out. Whether it’s a long-range bolt gun for sheep, elk and antelope, or a thumper of a lever gun destined to pursue bear in the spring vegetation, or an all-around deer gun, the possibilities are endless. Let’s take a gander at what’s new for 2022 for the American hunter.1. Marlin 1895 SBL and Trapper Rescued from the dustbin by Ruger, Marlin was purchased in the breakup of the Freedom Group, and they are coming back with a vengeance. The first of the new Marlin rifles to come off the line was the Model 1895 SBL, with its large

PHEASANT (COMMON) A large, long-tailed game bird. Males have rich chestnut, golden-brown and black markings on body and tail, with a dark green head and red face wattling. Females are mottled with paler brown and black. They were introduced in France long ago and more recent introductions have brought in a variety of races and breeds for sport shooting. It flies fast and in a rolling countryside it is a very difficult bird to shoot. In some of our hunting estates there are also some Reeve’s pheasant. This boldly patterned pheasant is instantly recognizable, having some of the longest tail feathers of any bird species. The male has bright golden-chestnut upper parts, with black borders to each feather creating a strongly scaled appearance, while the upper breast is darker chestnut to black, and the lower breast and side feathers are white, tipped in black. The female is much more light is color with a short tail. The males when they fly make a very characteristic sound (like a smal

How to Stalk a Black Bear It was a lazy October day, remarkable only in that I was outside and away from my desk with the forest an utter cornucopia of hunting possibilities. I was bowhunting tassel-eared squirrels with my good friends Dave Faiello and Pat Keith in New Mexico’s northern Gila National Forest. Essentially, it was an excuse to sit around campfires in the evenings with good company while also hunting something during daylight hours. And while western squirrel hunting doesn’t approach the allure of more glamorous big-game, it’s always an action-packed, enjoyable endeavor and nothing to get snooty about. It was nearly lunchtime, and I was just a couple bushytails away from a limit. I was slipping along a ridgeline with a recurve bow holding a quiver full of small-game heads, looking for the telltale flicker of a puffy tail in the pines or a bouncing rodent atop the acorn-laden understory. In the back of my mind, there was also the long shot of something else. That somethin

Five Top Tips to Improve Low Light Hunting Illuminated Reticles One of the most popular simple solutions to low light hunting is to buy a riflescope with an illuminated reticle, whereby a light source is directed onto the aim points of the reticle, highlighting the reticle in red, green or blue. The illumination is variable and this allows the shooter to increase the brightness of the reticle to suit the shooting conditions. Hawke Optics have several illuminated riflescopes with illumination control and options of red, green or blue to suit the shooters preference. Illuminated reticles are most useful at dawn or dusk, after this time it is better to illuminate the target with an external light source. View the entire collection of Hawke Reticles. Laser Sights For those countries that allow hunting with a laser one of the tried and tested methods for seeing the point of aim in low light conditions is to fit a laser pointer to a rifle. The most common method of using a laser is to

Meet Max, my loyal hunting companion. From the moment we set foot in the forest, Max’s excitement is palpable. His keen senses and unwavering loyalty make every hunting trip an adventure. 🐕✨ One crisp autumn morning, we ventured deep into the woods, the air filled with the scent of pine and the rustle of leaves. Max, with his nose to the ground, led the way. Suddenly, he froze, his ears perked up. I knew he had found something. 🦌🍂 Following his lead, we moved silently through the underbrush. Max’s instincts were spot on; we spotted a majestic deer grazing in a clearing. With a steady hand and a calm breath, I took the shot. Max’s tail wagged furiously as he retrieved our prize. 🏹🌿 But it’s not just about the hunt. It’s about the bond we share, the trust we build, and the memories we create. Max isn’t just a hunting dog; he’s my partner, my friend, and my greatest ally in the wild. 🐾❤️ Here’s to many more adventures with my best friend by my side. 🥂🌲 #HuntingCompanion #Wi

Potato Latkes with Alaska Salmon Roe “These little potato cakes called latkes are quick, simple, and versatile. I serve them as a side dish to roasted birds or as a brunch dish topped with eggs and smoked salmon. There are plenty of other uses, but for me the best is the way I had them as a kid. I remember watching my grandmother patiently and lovingly grate potatoes then onions by hand into a bowl. She would crack a few eggs, season with salt and pepper and stir gently so the mixture would just barely assemble. Using a spoon, she would scoop a little batter out and in a well-rehearsed manner, then she would drop them carefully one by one into a hot skillet generously slicked with duck fat. As the cakes sizzled, the intoxicating aromas filled our tiny kitchen. I stood by her side like an untrained puppy panting for his treat. She would give me the very first one, hot, straight out of the pan, unadorned. She would blow on it lovingly so it would not burn my lips and as I took a bite,

These days there are very few new products that I would actually call a “game changer.” Many are truthfully nothing more than a twist on an old idea or a slight improvement over something already available. When I first saw the new Primos Double Bull SurroundView hunting blinds at the January trade shows, I instantly said to myself, “game changer.” When I was able to hunt Axis deer in south Texas from one with a rifle in June, my opinion didn’t change. Since then I’ve had one at home and have been playing with it a lot in anticipation of some summer bow hunts. All I can say is, it’s something else. If you’re familiar with Double Bull pop-up blinds, then you need no convincing of their ruggedness and an interior configuration that's design is one that's well thought-out by hunters. My only beef with Double Bull blinds over the years is that, while their hub-and-pole system makes them solid as a rock once erected, putting up and taking the blinds down can be a bit of a challenge until

5 Tips to Set Up a Hunting Trophy Room! Start with a design Before you start hanging trophy kills, you need to start with the design. A design will give you practical steps on how you want the room to look and feel. Start with planning the purpose of this room. Is this just going to house your trophies? Will it be a centerpiece of your home? How many trophies do you plan to have in the future? These questions can help solidify what type of hanging racks you want to use and if you want to add special features such as seating, tv, bar, etc. It’s important to nail down these details first before you even start putting up any deer. These details can help guide you for the future and negate costly mistakes. Create a focal point As with any other room in your home, you want to use a simple but tried and true design technique. You want to create a focal point in your hunting trophy room. This can be an exotic animal stuffed over a fireplace, a bobcat sitting on a coffee table, or w

By Frank Gentile, Hopewell, N.Y. It was October 2011, and I was back in my Chevy Tahoe on my way to another hunt. This time, instead of my son, I was traveling with my hunting buddies. My buddies and I had been on plenty of trips together before but never to Texas! Between the four of us and gear for six (two of our team opted to fly from New York to San Antonio), every single spare inch of space in the truck had been utilized. With each of us taking turns driving, we made it to Texas in about 20 hours. We got dinner and hotel rooms in Texarkana, and were back on the road early the next morning. With a day to spare before we were due at our hunting camp in Hondo, Texas, we headed south with plans to enjoy the city of San Antonio along the way. In San Antonio, we explored the Alamo, the River Walk and the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum. What a great city! Our first order of business after arriving at the camp the next morning was to make sure that our rifles were on target.
