The Thrill of the Hunt: Connecting with Nature Hunting has been an integral part of human culture for centuries, serving not only as a means of sustenance but also as a unique opportunity to connect with nature. For many, it is more than just a sport; it’s a way to appreciate the wild, understand animal behavior, and develop a deep respect for the environment. The thrill of the hunt comes from the challenge it presents. Whether tracking a deer through the woods or patiently waiting in a blind for waterfowl, each outing is an adventure. Hunters often rely on a mix of skill, knowledge, and patience to succeed. It’s not just about the final catch but the experience of being outdoors, the strategies involved, and the camaraderie shared with fellow hunters. Sustainable hunting practices play a vital role in conservation efforts. By participating in regulated hunting, individuals contribute to wildlife management and habitat preservation. Fury as Victoria moves not to ban duck hunting despite inquiry recommendation Animal rights activists and politicians have slammed the Victorian government's decision to keep duck hunting legal, despite an inquiry recommending a ban on the controversial practice. The government today announced it would not ban hunting of duck species in Victoria despite a long-standing push to end the practice. Animal rights activists have labelled the decision inhumane, arguing that some species were under enormous pressure, while others were endangered. Victorian Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos confirmed the controversial decision today. "There are a diversity of views on this within the Victorian community and we've tried to listen to all of them," Dimopoulos said. "We accept that duck hunting is a legitimate activity that many thousands of Victorians enjoy and we want to make it safe, responsible and sustainable." The government plans to make changes to hunting laws to reduce the effects

In Chile, an Animal Whose Numbers Please No One CERRO SOMBRERO, Chile — The guidebooks for Tierra del Fuego somehow fail to mention the gunfire. From the mist-shrouded Patagonian steppe to the dense beech forests, shots pierce the air here for months on end each year. Hunters armed with telescopic rifles roam this archipelago at the southern tip of South America in pickup trucks as they pick off their prey: the guanaco. Humans have already hunted the guanaco, a wild cousin of the llama, out of existence across big swaths of the continent. While hunting the animal here is legal, the culling of Tierra del Fuego’s guanaco herds is setting off a fierce debate over the fragile recovery of a native species and the sway of powerful ranching and logging interests, which contend that rising numbers of guanacos are competing with sheep for pasture and foraging in commercial hardwood forests. “We’re witnessing a grotesque subordination to businessmen who view a creature of remarkable beauty a

Hunting for a Hare with a Dog: A Day in the Field with ROS the Spaniel Today, my red spaniel ROS showed exceptional skill in tracking a wounded hare. He picked up the scent of the injured animal, chased it down with determination, and finished the job with a clear voice. The emotions I’m feeling right now are overwhelming - not because of the hunt itself, but because of the dog’s incredible work. Thanks to ROS, there’s no wounded animal left suffering in the field. I’m sure many hunters will understand this feeling. While there are breeds that might perform this task even more spectacularly, ROS is my dog, and this was only his second time hunting hare. It’s all part of his training, and I’m proud to share how it went. Here’s how it unfolded: We entered a thicket and emerged into a small clearing. I spotted a hare running along the edge of the field, clearly flushed out by hunters who had gone further ahead. I took a couple of shots through the tall grass, but ROS didn’t see t

The Champawat tigress is a man-eating animal that killed 436 people! Photo: 1911 Nepal, Jim Corbett. In the early 1900s, the Nepalese region close to the Himalayas was terrorized by the most famous and bloodthirsty man-eating animal. Men, women, and children disappeared into the jungle. The attacks were so frequent and violent that the locals started talking about demons and punishments from the gods. But the Bengal tigress was the culprit! Champawat tigress was forced to hunt humans, but I'll tell you about that later. After people found out that people were disappearing because of the tigress. People started hunting for her, all attempts were in vain. The number of people killed has reached 200! I had to turn to the army. Hundreds of people with guns combed the region in search of her. Fleeing from them, the Champawat Tigress crossed the border with India and stopped in the Kumaon region. Settled in the forests of India, Champawat Tigress went back to her old ways. People began t

RED DEER The majestic Red Deer is the king of the French forests. An emblematical animal in Europe and mythical through Saint Hubertus’s legend, the hunters’ Patron Saint : the legend says that On Good Friday morning, when the faithful were crowding the churches, Hubert went anyway after deer. As he was chasing a magnificent white stag the animal turned and, as the pious legend narrates, he was astounded at perceiving a crucifix standing between its antlers and he heard God’s voice talking to him. Commonly present on most territories we hunt, be they in forest areas near Paris or in the south of France. Also impressive with a strong and graceful appearance, big male adults weigh up to 250 kilos (550 lbs). The red deer hunt begins early September to the end of February. The mating season usually takes place from mid-September to mid-October, it is then the best chance to see the biggest males and the most interesting trophies French red deer trophies are often splendid and as diverse

Hunting the Snowshoe Hare It’s hard to imagine a winter day spent more pleasantly than stalking through Alaska’s taiga hunting the snowshoe hare. There’s not a better reason to explore the reaches of our well-forested state, and there’s not an animal that’s better-suited to live there. Some days you find them, some days you don’t. To me this dichotomy represents the greatest draw of hunting hares: They’re routinely elusive but occasionally attainable, at once an animal that children’s hunting dreams are made of yet still wholly capable of making even the wisest feel like an idiot. I hunt hares exclusively with a rimfire rifle equipped with open sights. Yes, beagles and shotguns and loyal compatriots would probably be more effective, but I prefer to give the hare his refuges of invisibility and speed. If I can bag him in spite of those advantages, I like to think I’ve surmounted some pinnacle of woodsmanship and truly deserve the added weight in my vest. Or maybe I’m just full of it

Soldiers of the elite guard unit of the Iranian Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in a leopard skin uniform, 1960, Tehran. Persian leopards are one of the largest subspecies of leopards in the world. Their body length ranges from 126 to 183 cm, and their tail is 94-116 cm long. The skull is 20-25 cm long in males and 20-22 cm in females. The upper teeth of males reach a length of 68-75 mm, in females they are 64-67 mm. The height of the animal is approximately 76 cm, the average weight reaches 70 kg. In general, it is a very cautious and secretive animal. A leopard usually tries to hide, but when defending itself, it can even attack humans. He chooses gorges with streams or dense thickets as shelters. In deciduous forests, it can climb high into trees. It is not afraid of frosts and heat, but the predator usually stays far from reservoirs. The distribution range of this subspecies is quite wide, starting from the Main Caucasian Ridge and continuing to the Red Sea, and from the Bosphorus Ch

A Night in Hippo Heaven By Donald J Stoner It is said that hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal (if you exclude mosquitos). But does that qualify them to be classified as dangerous game. I have certainly had my doubts until, that is, an experience I had one night in a farmer’s field. There is no question that an animal that weighs two tons, can run up to 20 mph and has huge teeth, has the potential of being dangerous. The danger is highest if you happen to catch a hippo on the land. Water is their preferred environment and they seem less threatened there. I don’t think any predator will attack a full-grown hippo in the water, although a big croc will certainly snatch a small hippo given half a chance. On the other hand, lion, especially a large pride, will attack a hippo if they catch it on land. This may have something to do with hippo temperament when they are away from water. Threaten a hippo on land, and it will head straight for the nearest water an
