Indiana Hunt for Hunger asking hunters to consider donating deer harvest LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hunters in Indiana are being asked to donate from their deer harvest to help state food banks. In a release, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is reminding hunters about Indiana Hunt for Hunger. The reminder comes as deer firearms hunting season begins and the need for protein donations remains strong across the state. Updated this year with a new name and website, Indiana Hunt for Hunger turns donated deer into healthy venison that is provided to Hoosiers through food banks across the state. The program, previously called the Sportsmen’s Benevolence Fund, was started by the Indiana DNR and its partners in 2008. Since then, it has grown across the state to collect thousands of deer donations, providing hundreds of thousands of meals for Hoosiers.

IT'S NO SECRET that I'm addicted to studying and sharing the rich history of American archery and bowhunting. Today I'm focusing on Roy Case (1888-1986), rightfully known as "The Father of Wisconsin Bowhunting" and the man widely credited with coining the term "bowhunter." He's also recognized as the first-ever licensed archer to tag a deer during any state's firearms season. Archery history was made December 6, 1930, when Case arrowed a spike buck in Vilas County, Wisconsin. At that time, he was shooting a longbow and wood arrows equipped with steel broadheads of his own design -- the Case Kiska hunting head, which he made and sold nationwide between the 1920s and 1950s. He also wrote and published stories about his various archery hunts in "Ye Sylvan Archer" magazine. Also noteworthy is the fact Case worked to establish America's first bow-only deer season in his home state (1934). His work with hunting heads helped establish modern day legal broadhead standards that are still in

Hunting for a Hare with a Dog: A Day in the Field with ROS the Spaniel Today, my red spaniel ROS showed exceptional skill in tracking a wounded hare. He picked up the scent of the injured animal, chased it down with determination, and finished the job with a clear voice. The emotions I’m feeling right now are overwhelming - not because of the hunt itself, but because of the dog’s incredible work. Thanks to ROS, there’s no wounded animal left suffering in the field. I’m sure many hunters will understand this feeling. While there are breeds that might perform this task even more spectacularly, ROS is my dog, and this was only his second time hunting hare. It’s all part of his training, and I’m proud to share how it went. Here’s how it unfolded: We entered a thicket and emerged into a small clearing. I spotted a hare running along the edge of the field, clearly flushed out by hunters who had gone further ahead. I took a couple of shots through the tall grass, but ROS didn’t see t

Can a fox hunt a squirrel? Yes, foxes can and do hunt squirrels as part of their natural behavior. Foxes are carnivorous predators, and squirrels can be a part of their diet, especially if they are available in the fox's habitat. However, hunting squirrels can be challenging for foxes because squirrels are agile and quick, both on the ground and in trees. Foxes typically rely on stealth, speed, and surprise to catch prey like squirrels. They may stalk or ambush them, using their keen senses to detect movement and sound. While squirrels are not a fox's primary prey (they often prefer smaller mammals like rodents), they will take the opportunity to hunt squirrels if the situation allows. In urban or suburban areas where foxes and squirrels coexist, this predator-prey relationship can still occur, though it might be less common due to human interference and other food sources available to foxes.

While I’ve been blessed to travel North America in search of big whitetails, I live and hunt mostly in Kentucky. But, growing up, I didn’t have enough access to let properties soak until gun season. I only had one or two places to go, and I wanted to hunt. I’m more avid about bowhunting than gun hunting anyway. So, it just never made sense to not hunt at the earliest opportunity. Then, in 2015, I started leasing another property, which gave me additional access here at home. Since then, except for a few seasons, the practice has been to leave the property unhunted until rifle season in November. My anecdotal theory is that whitetails will get pressured by neighboring bowhunters, which will push deer onto the lease, ultimately “stacking” deer onto it for gun season. Furthermore, if I or another lease member happen to pressure a mature deer once gun season opens, it’s less likely to vacate the area given that the rut is already in motion. Interestingly, studies show bucks are less lik

The Truth About Western Wolf Hunting A deep dive into one of the most controversial hunting discussions in America Predator hunting is a popular pursuit during the winter and in some areas of the Rocky Mountains, that includes the opportunity to hunt the gray wolf. Gray wolf hunting and trapping seasons have been open on and off across Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming for the past decade. These elusive apex predators are difficult to pursue, but they provide an exciting opportunity for hunters, as well as the opportunity help wildlife management agencies keep populations in check. Wolves trigger passionate emotions that lead to arguments both for and against hunting. And no matter how many years pass with wolf hunting seasons in place, they still make headlines with groups like the Humane Society of the United States and Defenders of Wildlife routinely pushing to have hunts shut down. Meanwhile, wildlife agencies maintain their positions that gray wolf populations are sustainable enough to

The Otterhound: A Hunter's Companion With a Nose for Adventure As a seasoned hunter, I've always valued a good hunting dog by my side. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of working with many breeds, each with its own unique strengths. But today, I want to introduce you to a truly remarkable canine companion: the Otterhound. A Dog With a Purpose The Otterhound, as the name suggests, was originally bred to hunt otters. These aquatic predators were once considered a threat to fish stocks in England, and the Otterhound emerged as a specialist in their pursuit. But don't let the name fool you; the Otterhound is more versatile than you might think. While they excel in water, their stamina, powerful nose, and determination make them capable hunters on land as well. What Can an Otterhound Hunt? The hunt photographed here was more difficult than most — for reasons beyond the weather and rugged terrain. It was my first trip back to Alaska since my father’s death in March of this year.⁣ ⁣ Dad had joined me in Alaska twice before. The first trip was to fish and explore, the second to hunt caribou above the Arctic Circle. I remember asking him, “Do you want to go caribou hunting?” He shook his head with a quick, “No, not this year.” I pressed, sliding a plane ticket and his caribou tag across the dining room table. Surprised but hesitant—65 years old and a little nervous—he said yes. By June, he was packed and ready for our mid-September departure. That was Dad—quietly determined, but always prepared. We had a great hunt, and he killed a nice bull.⁣ ⁣ On each solo hunt after that, I’d message him with my InReach every few days, updating him on close calls and wild moments. He loved it all. Last year, I wrote from the Alaska Peninsula, “Dad, I thought we had a big earthquake today—

How to Call in a Bull Elk Like a Calling Champion Do You Use These Techniques? You might expect a top elk caller to focus his hunting advice on proper call selection, volume, tone, timing or teamwork. But one Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation World Elk Calling Championship winner says perhaps the most critical step to calling in elk is how you set up to intercept an approaching bull. Corey Jacobsen of Boise, Idaho, is one of the most decorated world champion elk callers in the country, as well as a consistently successful bowhunter. Jacobsen offers the following key advice on calling elk into bow range: “The setup might be the most critical step," Jacobsen said. "It always plays a major role in determining the outcome of a hunt. I can’t count how many hunts have been blown by a bad setup — too much brush to shoot through, not enough cover to hide in, no shooting lanes, inconsistent wind currents, caught in the open, the list goes on and on. “I always repeat one word to myself when I’m s

The feeling of satisfaction is indescribable when you independently tracked and caught your prey. Duck hunting is not only a way to relax and spend time in nature, it is also an opportunity to test your skills and endurance. Each duck matinee is a real test for the hunter, and only a true professional can successfully cope with this challenge. Ducks are smart and dexterous creatures, which is why hunting them requires all our care and dexterity. But when you were able to emerge victorious from this fight, a feeling of pride and respect for nature fills you to the limit. Duck hunting is not only an exciting activity, but also a way to enjoy nature and spend time with friends. What are your memories and emotions from duck hunting? Tell us in the comments! 🦆
