BC resident Kyle Southgate was able to seize the opportunity once he found a break in the weather. A nice day quickly turned into a huge snowstorm with gusty winds. He decided to head down the mountain in hopes of escaping the poor visibility conditions. As he made his way further down, the weather had cleared up, leaving this old, 15 year-old billy standing on a small cliff face. Kyle sprung into position and made a great shot. 4 NEW WAYS TO TAG PUBLIC-LAND TURKEYS RIGHT NOW Try these four surefire guerilla tactics to bag your public-land gobbler this spring. 1. START SCOUTING EARLY February is usually a gloomy month for outdoorsmen. Waterfowl and whitetail seasons have recently closed. It’s too cold to go fishing, and cabin fever seems to be a common illness. However, this time of year offers the best chance at getting a jump-start on killing a spring gobbler. To beat the February blues, I like to grab my .410 for squirrels and rabbits, and lace on a good pair of hiking boots. Boots on the ground is one of the biggest factors in setting the table for spring gobbler success as knowing the lay of the land is critical. The foliage is off the trees this time of the year, which makes a walk through the woods fairly easy. The snakes and ticks usually haven’t made their warm weather debut quite yet, either. And since whitetail deer shed their antlers this time of year, you can keep a lookout for sheds while youPost: 13 December 17:45

I have posted this painting before, but it is the last Tuesday in January and The Scarteen Black and Tans meet at Emly as they have for season after timeless season. The country depicted here is crossed from this iconic meet. Emly is a beautiful town, and today the clock will stop at 10.45am as hounds are are paraded up to the school for the children to see. As they pass along the Main Street most doors will open, shops and offices pause in business and traffic pull over to welcome and admire the iconic and beautiful hounds and those mounted who are eager to follow them. This is a place that recognises the valuable and intrinsic part played by the hunt in rural society. Thankfully these places still exist, consequently the hunting is first rate!! One for the Road Pachydermia The fading symbol of Africa To the wide world, the elephant is the symbol of Africa. Hunters might hold out for the lion, and the greater kudu has it advocates, but ask the average person what animal he thinks of when you mention Africa and the answer will almost always be “the elephant.” This fact is important when you consider the coverage given to game conservation generally by the mainstream media. The mountain nyala may be seriously endangered, or the eastern bongo, or giant sable, but mention those to the average journalist—or, more to the point, the average editor—and you will likely get nothing more than a strange look. Every couple of years, The Economist, London’s highly respected international news magazine, remembers the elephant and sends someone to take a look at its status. One expects high quality journalism from The Economist, and usually gets it. Its most recent articles on elephant are broadly excellent, but with one curiouPost: 15 December 09:27

Montana releases new elk management plan There’s a new elk management plan in place for Montana. This month, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) announced the adoption of the 2023 plan and environmental assessment. The new plan is flexible and “forward looking,” according to the agency. It will help FWP making informed decisions that incorporate conservation initiatives with regard to elk management and help guide future requirements for sustainably managing elk populations. “Development of the new elk plan was a long and expansive process, and we appreciate all the public input we received,” said Dustin Temple, FWP Director. “Elk management is controversial in Montana, but through this process we saw people with varying interests come together with new ideas. That collaboration is captured in the plan and will be critical moving forward.” Some highlights of the new plan include a less prescription, more objective/goal-focused management strategy as well as specific identificationPost: 7 December 09:17
Labour accuses Government of being ‘complicit’ in trophy trade Delays to the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill have led to accusations that Conservative peers are slowing the Bill intentionally. Labour has accused the Government of being “complicit” in trophy hunting after a bill that would see imports banned in the UK became tied up in the House of Lords. Commons leader Penny Mourdaunt has insisted that MPs will get another chance to debate the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill, though more Parliamentary time will have to be allocated. Opposition politicians accused Conservative peers of filibustering and trying to prevent the Bill from becoming law. Added amendments were branded last week as “death by a thousand cuts” in Parliament, with 62 being added separately. Those making changes have denied trying to “kill the Bill”, instead insisting they want to improve it. (AP) — Hunters can expect near-perfect conditions when Wisconsin's annual nine-day gun deer season opens Saturday. Wisconsin Public Radio reported Thursday that temperatures in the 20s and 30s will allow hunters to sit in one area comfortably if they choose and snow-covered ground will make deer more visible and easier to track. The only issue could be wind, which could affect deer movement and make things tougher for hunters, said Jeff Pritzl, state Department of Natural Resources deer program specialist. DNR officials told WPR that they expect to sell about 550,000 licenses this year. The agency sold 564,440 licenses last year. License sales have been trending down for more than 20 years, slipping about 1.5% annually since 2000 as older hunters age out of the sport faster than young people are taking Post: 20 November 17:52
Province takes more steps to combat chronic wasting disease The province is taking more actions to prevent the spread of a deadly disease that impacts deer and other wildlife. Chronic wasting disease was first detected in Manitoba last year in five mule deer along the Manitoba-Saskatchewan border. CWD is an incurable, fatal disease that also effects elk moose and caribou. And while no additional cases have been detected, the province is expanding what’s called a mandatory sample submission zone, which requires hunters in certain areas to provide samples of their harvested animal for testing. And a strictly regulated and managed mule deer hunting season will be established. Both changes will take place along the western and southern borders of Manitoba. “Additional longer-term measures are needed to prevent any further spread,” said Maria Arlt of the province’s Natural Resources and Northern Development Branch. “If CWD spreads, it can become one of the greatest threats to populationPost: 18 September 11:58
