DIY Moose Hunt in Icy Bay For the last three minutes, “Young Guns” has been on a beeline to my cow call. My loud calls, bolstered by the use of Wayne Kubat’s “Bull Magnet,” which is essentially a fiberglass megaphone that allows me to amplify both cow calls and bull grunts, has drawn in this big bull from far away. At first, far in the distance, I could hear the faint vocalizations of a bull drawn to a cow. The rhythmic “Ooh-Waa” sounds are repeated by the bull every few seconds. Finally, at about 400 yards across the swamp, I get a visual on the bull as he milled around. At first it appears that the bull is going to head off in another direction, but my persistent calling has him coming on a string. The topography of the location makes it so I won’t be able to get a shot until he comes clear of the brush that separates us, which will put him broadside at 20 yards. I experience a full adrenaline rush after so much communication with this bull, and have enough time to calm down my hear

You can even find places where the forest canopy thins to suggest hidden grazing spots for elk. Newer GPS units accept uploaded coordinates from Google Earth, allowing you to walk directly to and more efficiently ground-truth potential honeyholes. 2. Count Points Quickly In good habitat, a bull normally has a 5-point rack as a 2-1/2-year-old and a small 6-point rack the following year. Instantly distinguishi

PREDATOR HUNTING—HOW TO GET STARTED THE EASY WAY CLASSIC COYOTE SETUPS There are three basic types of coyote hunts: A silent stand in which you post up and hope to shoot coyotes passing by. A calling stand in which you hunker down and call coyotes into gun range; What I call a “run-and-gun hunt” in which you drive rural roads and stop periodically to call, then set up when you get a response. 1. SILENT STANDS Looking at the silent stand, your standard deer-season treestand or ground blind can work beautifully, especially if it is situated between deer feeding and bedding areas. Those are the same habitats that coyotes work, so as long as the wind is favorable—that is, blowing away from where you expect to see coyotes—then you should expect a shot. This silent-stand hunting is not a numbers game. You are relying on a dog to simply show itself, and if you shoot, or do anything to alert animals that you’re in the area, then you might be in for a long, slow day. But you can make good

Brno ZH 304 12/7x57R: A Practical Hunter's Tool With Quirks My honest take on the Brno ZH 304 12/7x57R, based on my own experience as a hunter and gun enthusiast. Forget the marketing fluff, this is real-world feedback. The Brno ZH 304. It's a name that conjures up images of tough Eastern European hunters, thick forests, and game taken with precision. This combination gun/double rifle has a certain appeal, a no-nonsense functionality that attracts those who value practicality over flashy aesthetics. I've owned and used one for several seasons, primarily for driven hunts and pursuing boar in close cover, and I've developed a complex relationship with it. The Good: Versatility: This is the ZH 304's biggest selling point. The combination of a 12-gauge shotgun barrel and a 7x57R rifle barrel makes it adaptable to a wide range of hunting situations. You can transition from birds to deer to boar with a simple barrel selector. For a hunter who wants a single gun that can do almost anythin

Nature’s best friend: Scientists train dogs to sniff out dangerous invasive species Dogs can sniff out invasive fish in lakes without even seeing them, new research suggests. In lakes and rivers around the world, carp are wreaking havoc on local species. Native to central Asia, these common fish infest freshwater lakes and rivers, outcompeting other animals. But scientists have discovered a new tool in the fight against the invasive creature - the powerful nose of man’s best friend. According to a study by Australian and New Zealand scientists, specially-trained canines can detect whether invasive carp are present in water. In fact, they’re even better than lab tools. “(Our) findings suggest that dogs could provide an accurate and highly sensitive method of invasive fish detection,” the study authors write.

What is Ethical Hunting? The key element of ethical hunting is recognizing that conversation around how the hunt is being done and why it matters is important. Three key things along with in-field elements are taught when someone’s learning to hunt. These are: Understanding the situation and knowing if the shot is safe. Legal aspects of the situation and the shot. Understanding if the shot and situation are ethical and responsible. Hunting Perch with Waterfowl Calls From mid-winter through ice-out, Devils Lake guide Jason Feldner “hunts” perch with a system he says can’t be beat. Relying on highly detailed GPS mapping and electronics, signs from Mother Nature and a ‘three call’ system, Feldner quickly locates and ices big perch, day-in-day-out. “When it comes to finding fish, you’ve gotta key in on slight 1-foot depth contours—especially for perch. In mid- and late winter, a good place to start is that 8- to 15-foot range,” says Feldner. Like birds following a migration path, perch slowly travel specific depth contours from mid-winter through late ice to reach their spring spawning areas. “If you can’t get right on those one-foot contours and follow the perch, you’re gonna have a tough time staying on the action,” says Feldner. But to get the contour right, sink an Aqua-Vu camera, and you’ll spy a stockyard of yellow, green and black bars moving amidst swarms of shrimp. “That’s what I try to put my clients on

Where to find pheasants In the afternoon, divided into pairs, pheasants feed right there near the current location, most often on sunflower and wheat crops. By the evening, about four o'clock, the males begin to call to each other again. When they meet, they fight among themselves. The current of pheasants continues until mid-June. The roosters scream especially hard after the females sit on the eggs. It happens from about the middle of May. The male does not take part in incubation, at this time he shouts intensely and runs around in search of single females. The hen lays from 10 to 15 eggs. She makes a nest somewhere in the reeds or in the thick grass under a thorny bush. After twenty-five days of incubation, in the first half of June, the chicks hatch. They emerge from eggs in thick down and with stumps, that is, contour feathers that begin to develop; they quickly grow flight feathers, and then they can escape from enemies by flying up trees. In the second half of August,

Wildlife Pursuits in MANOUBA: Laws and Legislation, Hunting Seasons and Demographics Landscape Attributes and Natural Layout in Manouba Manouba, positioned just west of Tunis, is a region marked by its semi-urban sprawl interwoven with agricultural fields, rolling hills, and small woodland pockets. While it is one of Tunisia’s more developed governorates, its rural zones—particularly around Tebourba, El Battan, and Djedeida—offer suitable environments for controlled hunting. Olive plantations, wheat fields, and river valleys shape the region’s ecological diversity, attracting certain species of game, especially in the cooler months. Though not known for dense forests or wild expanses, Manouba’s fragmented rural zones create a patchwork of viable habitats that support small and medium game species in sustainable numbers. Hunter Distribution and Local Involvement in Manouba Region The hunting community in Manouba is smaller than in Tunisia’s northern or interior regions, due in part

The Hanoverian Scenthound: A Tracker's Reliable Partner For serious hunters who prioritize accuracy and perseverance above all else, the Hanoverian Scenthound ( Hannoverscher Schweisshund) deserves a close look. Where You'll Find Them Hunting Historically developed in Germany, the Hanoverian Scenthound's heartland remains in Central Europe. The English Setter: A Gentleman's Gun Dog – History, Hunting Prowess, and Care The English Setter, often dubbed a "gentleman's gun dog," is more than just a pretty face in the field. These dogs are tireless workers with a keen nose, bred for centuries to find and point game birds. If you're considering an English Setter for hunting, here's what you need to know. A Breed Steeped in History and Purpose The English Setter's roots trace back to 14th-century Europe, with origins in spaniel-type dogs. Selective breeding in England throughout the 1800s by dedicated sportsmen like Edward Laverack and Purcell Llewellin refined the breed into the elegant, skilled pointer we know today. Laverack focused on beauty and temperament, while Llewellin prioritized field performance. These early bloodlines laid the foundation for the modern English Setter. Key Fact: English Setters were developed specifically to locate game birds, "set" (crouch or lie down) in front of them, and allow the hunter to a
