New Mexico bans scopes on muzzleloaders Earlier this month, the New Mexico State Game Commission voted to ban the use of scopes on all muzzleloaders beginning the 2023 hunting season. The new ruling specified that muzzleloader hunters are not allowed to use scopes on their muzzleloaders during a hunt, but that scopes are still legal for muzzleloaders during Any Legal Weapon hunts only. Stewart Liley, head biologist for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, stated in the meeting with the commission that technology improvements have made muzzleloaders nearly as effective as centerfire rifles. Liley went on to note, “what we’re seeing biologically is that the harvest is going to be unsustainable,”. If you are planning to apply for New Mexico in 2023, please remember to take this new rule change into account.

At 78 years of age, cancer has pretty much taken away my ability to climb mountains in search of elk. Don’t feel sorry for me, I have killed plenty of elk, mostly cows for the good eating. I had some messages lately asking if I took my 300 RUM to Tajikistan on the Marco Polo and ibex hunt… the answer is a solid yes! The entire 2022 season I hunted with the RUM. Most probably know by now that I’m willing to pack a heavy rifle around (even on my backpack hunts). A rifle has one purpose, during one tiny small moment of a hunt. I know my thinking isn’t the norm, and I’m probably on the opposite side of the spectrum when it comes to a hunting rifle; but that’s what makes hunting fun, we have choices. I shot this button buck Saturday night while sitting at the base of a giant oak tree. Three does came out of the cedars earlier that evening, but they were about 155 yards away and moving at a pretty good clip. Then this young deer came out, and when he finally moved out from behind a couple trees in front of me, he stopped quartering toward me and gave me a shot at about 75 yards. I don’t prefer to hunt with a muzzleloader, but the December season seems to be about the only time I get the opportunity to hunt deer. The shot rang and after a moment of blindness, the smoke cleared. I saw the deer bolt about 50 yards to my right. I thought I’d missed him, but as he approached a couple lone cedar trees in the open, he made a sharp, confused U-turn, and then crashed down into the dry creek bed to the north. Oklahoma. Corty & I hit the lake last Friday. We tried a couple of drifts and a few anchors with the boat to no avail. We setup camp on a sandy island right off the main channel ledge. We knew something would come through there overnight. We were able to put baits as deep as 50 feet deep from the bank. The night was slow, until I caught 2 PB Stripers on cut shad! The first is not pictured about 8lbs then 2 hours later a bigger one at 13lbs around midnight. I was excited! I arose around 7 a.m. to see Cortys rod had been pulled forward in the sand. I said, "hey buddy I think you have a fish on!" He got up and landed his NEW PB 57LB Blue Catfish!! She was released healthy. It was a joy to see the hours of fruitless fishing pay off. We caught 3 other dink blues.

Day 2 of 5. Oklahoma. I packed up camp on the lake and headed to the river. The water was all the way up to 52 degrees after being in the low 30s the week before! I setup on a deep hole (20ft. deep) with a big inside eddy. I caught a 3 pound dinner cat within 2 minutes of setting up, then another small fish 2 minutes after that, then this surprise January Flathead about 5 minutes later! 3 fish within the first 15 minutes was a great start then it died down. After a couple hours and some missed bites I put 2 rods on the downstream side of the hole in about 6 feet of water and shortly after I got a good blue! I had fried catfish for dinner and slept like a baby with no bites the rest of the night. I love camping on the river and not just observing wildlife but being apart of it. From Coyotes howling to wild pigs squealing to big blue cats biting the crap out of me I love it!

Trail camera pictures are only as useful as you make them. At the most basic level, they tell you if nice bucks are around. But what you’re really trying to figure out is where those nice bucks are heading, where they’re coming from, and where they might be vulnerable. To do that, you’ve got to really read the pictures, not just flip through them. For example, look to see if one of your target bucks is hanging out with a bachelor group of smaller bucks. That way, even if you don’t keep getting photos of the big buck, but capture shots of the smaller bucks, you can still gamble on the big buck’s general whereabouts (some of the wariest bucks are good at avoiding cameras).
