Hunting regs, deer hunting licenses now available Deer hunting licenses can be purchased starting today and the 2022 Minnesota hunting regulations are now available here. Print copies of the regulations will be available in early August wherever licenses are sold. When deer hunters venture out into fields and forests this fall, they will find healthy deer populations faring well in most of Minnesota, ample harvest opportunities, and a continued commitment to managing chronic wasting disease management adaptively statewide. “We’re excited about deer hunting this year,” said Kelly Straka, wildlife section manager for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “Hunters in 20% of our deer permit areas will have increased opportunities for harvest, and opportunities in 70% of DPAs remain unchanged from last year. In some areas of northern Minnesota, severe winter conditions have impacted low deer numbers, so hunter opportunity in these areas is designed to help stabilize or increase

8 Great New Hunting Rifles for 2022 Though I absolutely love those rifles which have been with me for decades, and have shared so many indelible memories, I still get excited to see the new crop of rifles introduced each year, and always ponder the possibilities of creating new memories with a new model. A hunting rifle can become a life-long friend, but like any friend, there’s the first time you meet, and like so many friendships, sometimes things don’t work out. Whether it’s a long-range bolt gun for sheep, elk and antelope, or a thumper of a lever gun destined to pursue bear in the spring vegetation, or an all-around deer gun, the possibilities are endless. Let’s take a gander at what’s new for 2022 for the American hunter.1. Marlin 1895 SBL and Trapper Rescued from the dustbin by Ruger, Marlin was purchased in the breakup of the Freedom Group, and they are coming back with a vengeance. New Mexico bans scopes on muzzleloaders Earlier this month, the New Mexico State Game Commission voted to ban the use of scopes on all muzzleloaders beginning the 2023 hunting season. The new ruling specified that muzzleloader hunters are not allowed to use scopes on their muzzleloaders during a hunt, but that scopes are still legal for muzzleloaders during Any Legal Weapon hunts only. Stewart Liley, head biologist for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, stated in the meeting with the commission that technology improvements have made muzzleloaders nearly as effective as centerfire rifles. Liley went on to note, “what we’re seeing biologically is that the harvest is going to be unsustainable,”. If you are planning to apply for New Mexico in 2023, please remember to take this new rule change into account.

New initiative targets Colorado mountain lion hunting What will the future of Colorado mountain lion hunting look like? A new petition filed with the Colorado Supreme Court is asking for a proposed ballot to be blocked that would request voters to approve a “statewide ban on hunting mountain lions, bobcats and Canada lynx.” Opponents say that the measure is “misleading” and multiple mistakes were made by the Colorado Secretary of State’s Title Board prior to getting the measure approved for the November 2024 ballot, according to The Colorado Sun. However, last week, a second initiative, Initiative 101, was filed that requests a limit (not ban) to hunting mountain lions, bobcats and lynx in an effort to curb trophy hunting. If approved, this limit would require “every carcass – excluding usable meat – to be turned over” to prevent “mounting, displaying or preserving wildcats as ‘souvenirs of their hunts.’” Initiative 101 does allow a two-week mountain lion and bobcat season at the en

Anschutz 1516 .22 WMR: A Hunter's Honest Review As a hunter who's been tracking game and spending time at the range for years, I have a soft spot for quality rimfire rifles. The Anschutz 1516 in .22 WMR has been on my radar for a while, and after putting it through its paces, here's my no-nonsense take: The Good (Where the 1516 Shines): Unrivaled Accuracy: This is where the Anschutz truly stands out. The match-grade barrel and precise manufacturing translate to incredibly tight groups. Even at 100 yards, it's consistently accurate, making it a top choice for small game hunting and target shooting. I have to say that the .22 WMR version of the 1516 may actually be better that it's .22 LR brother in this instance. Exceptional Trigger: The trigger is crisp, light, and adjustable. It's a joy to use and significantly contributes to the rifle's overall accuracy. High-Quality Build: Anschutz rifles are known for their craftsmanship, and the 1516 is no exception. The fit and finish are ex

The German Wirehaired Pointer: A Hunter's Rugged and Reliable Companion For those of us who live and breathe hunting, the choice of a canine partner is one of the most important decisions we make. We're not looking for a pet; we're looking for a teammate, a specialist, a dog that embodies the spirit of the hunt as much as we do. The German Wirehaired Pointer (GWP) often stands out as a top contender – and for good reason. This isn't a pampered show dog; it's a versatile, tough, and intelligent hunter bred for serious work in the field. What Can a Wirehaired Pointer Hunt? The beauty of the GWP lies in its versatility. They're true multi-purpose dogs. While individual dogs may show a preference for certain game based on their training and experience, a well-bred and trained GWP can excel at: Upland Birds: Pheasant, quail, grouse, woodcock, partridge – the GWP's keen nose, methodical search, and staunch point make it a formidable upland bird dog. Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50 Scope Review I recently had the opportunity to test the Leupold VX-3 4.5-14x50 rifle scope, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this product after extensive use in various hunting scenarios. Build Quality and Design First and foremost, the build quality of the VX-3 is top-notch. Leupold is known for its durable optics, and the VX-3 is no exception. The housing is made from a solid aluminum alloy, and it feels robust and can withstand the rigors of outdoor use. The matte finish reduces glare, which is a nice touch for hunters looking to remain undetected. One of the standout features of this scope is its weight. At just over 14 ounces, it strikes a balance between being lightweight for easy carry and sturdy for reliable performance. The 50mm objective lens is a significant factor as well, allowing for excellent light transmission, which is crucial for low-light conditions like early dawn or late dusk. Optical Performance When it comes to optical performanc

How to Call in a Bull Elk Like a Calling Champion Do You Use These Techniques? You might expect a top elk caller to focus his hunting advice on proper call selection, volume, tone, timing or teamwork. But one Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation World Elk Calling Championship winner says perhaps the most critical step to calling in elk is how you set up to intercept an approaching bull. Corey Jacobsen of Boise, Idaho, is one of the most decorated world champion elk callers in the country, as well as a consistently successful bowhunter. Jacobsen offers the following key advice on calling elk into bow range: “The setup might be the most critical step," Jacobsen said. "It always plays a major role in determining the outcome of a hunt. I can’t count how many hunts have been blown by a bad setup — too much brush to shoot through, not enough cover to hide in, no shooting lanes, inconsistent wind currents, caught in the open, the list goes on and on. “I always repeat one word to myself when I’m s

Hardware: Colt Anaconda For some folks, the sight of a scoped bolt-action rifle or elegant over/under shotgun instantly makes them think of hunting. For me, the glimpse of a long-barreled big-bore revolver does the same thing. In the case of Colt’s new stainless steel Anaconda with an 8-inch barrel, visions of big-game animals immediately popped into my mind. Knowing the Anaconda is chambered in .44 Magnum, and seeing the overall size of the new revolver up close, made me focus on the largest of the animals I’ve hunted. This is clearly a handgun and caliber one could use worldwide on any land animal. Yes, the Anaconda does remind you of its smaller relative, the new Python, with its world-famous ventilated rib, full-length lug and highly polished stainless-steel finish. A little closer look reveals the fully adjustable rear sight, wide hammer spur, open-back rubber Hogue grips, replaceable front sight with orange insert, and a top strap already drilled and tapped to facilitate the mo
