Wolf season shuts down early in southwestern Montana Too many Yellowstone wolves have been trapped or killed by hunters during Montana’s wolf season, resulting in a call by wildlife commissioners to shut the season down early in the southwestern portion of the state. To date, 76 wolves have been reported killed. Once that number hits 82, hunting and trapping will be over for the area this season, according to the Associated Press. I was taking a hike up a centennial 13er in the San Juans on Tuesday morning and was, uh, surprised to meet up with a couple of female moose on my path up. We had a stand off for about 5 minutes when it was clear at least one of them was NOT getting off the path. I had to bushwhack up the side of the mountain about 30 yards and make my way by them. The moon was so bright that morning. And I ran into this cabin on the way up and down. Someone has put some money into it because the roof is metal and newish. There's magic in the air. The first frosts of the year greet us each morning, and the tops of the highest peaks are dusted with snow. The colours are changing, and the Yukon's landscape is something to behold. It's moose hunting season, and I'm excited. What you'll see in these images is how tall the buckbrush in the valley is. You will have a few challenges if you want to stand in here and hunt moose. If you're lucky, the brush will make it impossible to see any bulls or cows further than a few hundred yards. Taking a shot? It's almost impossible unless the bull comes in hot to your call. I much prefer getting up on the hillsides around the valley where I can call effectively and glass massive areas. You can see one image of my father with the bull he shot. While we were down in the valley, we found a small hill to shoot from, and it gave use a fantastic shooting angle above the brush.

鹿児島県の喜界島で野生化し頭数が増加傾向にあるシカの駆除数が急増している。2023年度は9月26日時点で165頭と、17年度の駆除開始以降で最多だった22年度実績（76頭）を大幅に上回っている。喜界町農業振興課は「根絶を目指し、このペースで捕獲を進めたい」としている。 　町は18年度と21年度、シカのふん粒確認や自動撮影カメラによる生息実態調査を実施。推計頭数は18年度の115頭から21年度には303頭に増加した。主に百之台国立公園周辺など島中央部や小野津、志戸桶、佐手久など島北部の集落の林などに生息しているとみられ、サトウキビの新芽や牛の飼料などの食害が確認されているという。 　同町では猟友会の協力を得て17年度に本格的な駆除事業を開始。当初2人でスタートした狩猟従事者数は年々増加し、現在は16人。駆除実績は17年度20頭、18年度37頭、19年度40頭、20年度66頭、21年度70頭と推移している。 　事業開始からしばらく、捕獲報奨金は1頭当たり1万円に設定していたが、22年度下半期から1万5千円に増額。今年度からは年間捕獲数が10頭までは同額、11頭以降は2万円にするなど、この2年間で報奨金を引き上げた。 　駆除頭数の増加について同課は「狩猟従事者が増え、設置するわなの増加や捕獲成功率の上昇、報奨金の引き上げ効果などが要因ではないか」と分析。今年度は当初予算で150万円を計上していたが駆除数増加で予算超過となったため、補正予算で200万円を増額しており、「行政もできる限りバックアップして、駆除につなげたい」としている。
